Dog biting

My boyfriend and I adopted a dog 2 1/2 years ago from the shelter. He was 6 months old at the time. I know nothing about his past except that he was returned multiple times. He is a relatively calm dog when he has a routine. He loves to snuggle and sleep pretty much all day. But when people come over, which is fairly often, he will start to lick their face in excitement and many times has nibbled or bit their face at the same time. I believe it’s a huge issue. I don’t trust him around children and I try to keep out of our guests personal space. The dog has a lot of anxiety, specifically separation anxiety. He cannot go to the dog park because he can be aggressive. My boyfriend does not seem to think it’s an issue. Whenever we try to talk about it I just get so frustrated because he doesn’t think the same way I do. He always just says “he’s a good boy”. I don’t know what to do about it. Boyfriend thinks having people over more often will get him used to it. I think he’s one bite away from having to get put down, which makes me not want him around people at all. I know he needs socialization, but I don’t want to use our friends as guinea pigs for my dog that nibbles/ bites faces. Anyone have advice for me on how to get my boyfriend on the same page & help my dog?

HELP MY CAT WONT STOP!

My cat pees everywhere. From boots & shoes & boot trays & beds & carpets & everything I own. I've tried cleaning the spots she likes to pee in or on with soap and water and Even sprayed febreeze in the area but nothing has stopped I clean her litter box everyday. I play with her. I pay attention to her alot. I even got her spayed because I thought she was being territorial because I've got 1 other cat and a few other pets. I love her with all my heart and my parents told me if she doesn't stop these behavior we will have to rehome her or even put her down 😭😭😭 Please I need help ASP!

Two kittens, cant handle the male.

My partner and I adopted two kittens, a male and a female. Our female is sweet cuddly, and pretty chill, but the male is destructive and hard to deal with.

We're in the process of getting their shots done so that we can have them spayed and neutered, but he's becoming too much to handle.

Is this something that will go away after getting him neutered, or it the option of giving him up our best way to go?

[Help] Is my sister abusing her puppy?

About a week ago, she said her boyfriend said that he found poop behind the couch, and put the puppies face in it. She wasnt sure I'd he rubbed its face in it, or just showed it to the puppy. I talked to her the next day, and said that he he actually rubbed the puppies face in it, than that is wrong, and cruel. She said she agreed, and said they both agreed not to do that. After that she said shell give the puppy a little swat on the butt sometimes, which I assume is a light slap? I dont agree with it, but is that considered abuse? I really dont want to, but should I report her for animal abuse? Also, she has an older dog, and I've never seen her hit her. I know she is mostly kind to her dogs.

Mom wants to put down mostly healthy 14 year old cat

Hi all,

My mom wants to put down a 14 year old cat of ours who is almost compulsively deficating and urinating at almost any location in the house with an increasing frequency. He has a long history of ignoring the boundaries of the litter box, but has only gotten worse. I'm starting to suspect a medical exasperation of his existing habits, but they only spend vet money on the dog, not my cats.

I swear putting down a mostly healthy animal who's my childhood pet is outright evil, and this bitter argument with my mom is emotionally and psychologically eating at me and our relationship. I'm 23 and will halt my schoolling to get the finances to run away if they do this. I do not want them to give the animal up neither. Please help, give advice

How do I calm down a dog?

My dog won't stop clawing us, begging to be lifted while he cries because he can't stay in the same room as my other dog.

My other dog, a female, is kept separately because we fear that she might get pregnant with my other dog around, and due to that, he throws fits and cries while breathing heavily.

How do I calm him down without keeping him in the same room as my other dog?

Dog and cat suddenly not getting along. Any advice?

So my boyfriend has a dog (redtick coonhound, never been hunted) and I have a cat. The dog and the cat have been spending time together for about a year and a half. At first the cat mostly hid from the dog while the dog was really curious and wanting to play with the cat.

Eventually the cat warmed up more and would hang out by the dog and wait around the corner for her and they’d play chase (we’d see her poking her head out to look for the dog and she’ll wait by the door when the dog goes outside). Once the dog caught the cat, she’d roll over and bat at the dog playfully.

The past few days, they’ve suddenly not gotten along very well. The cat seems easily agitated by the dog while the dog still just wants to play. She’s been swiping at her. Tonight actually startled me. I didn’t see it, but my boyfriend said the cat swiped at the dog and the dog started whining. I turned and saw the dog run towards the cat and admittedly it frightened me. The dog didn’t actually do anything to the cat but was acting super wound up and whining. The cat ran up the stairs and the dog wanted to follow and was kind of freaking out what we wouldn’t let her.

My boyfriend said we need to figure this out before one or both of them get hurt (I’m thinking the cat is more likely to hurt the dog as the dog has never shown aggression towards the cat while the cat is not afraid to swipe at the dog). I’d like to think that if the dog was really going to go after the cat suddenly, then the cat would know to run/get somewhere up high like she used to do before she was comfortable around the dog.

Some potential causes: 1) our house is under major construction right now (ripped up kitchen floor) and I know animals don’t like change like this. But this has been happening for awhile and the animals have recently been acting this way. 2) the dog was gone for a week while my boyfriend went back home and maybe the cat was happy the dog was gone and now angry she’s back(?). I’m unsure and unsure what to do. It’s not like I can separate them, we live together, but I don’t want someone getting hurt.

Thanks for reading.

Cat aggression after anesthesia

So a little background, my cat, Chairman Meow, has had bad experiences at the vet. She is usually given medication before a visit to calm her down or else she's a monster. She has been under anesthesia twice before for a teeth cleaning and reacted negatively. She'll hiss if people approach her then hide under the bed but she's usually is back to normal after a day or less than 24 hours. However, this time, she is growling and hissing at me after 24 hours. She's also running rapidly around the house hissing and then hiding under the bed. Is there anything I can do? Will she calm down? I can't decide if I should lock her up in the room where she's hiding so she can feel safe or leave the door open. Should I stay in my house or leave for a long period of time? Any advice would be appreciated and any advice for future teeth cleanings will help too. Thank you!

Advice on introducing 2 cats to a (cat-friendly?) dog

Happy NYE, everyone! Because of the holiday, a couple of my partner’s friends are coming to visit, and are bringing their dog with them due to the fact that they couldn’t find/couldn’t afford a sitter (I’m not exactly sure). The dog is an older mini Schnauzer who, according to my partner, has lived with cats for a long time, and is overall submissive, never having problems with his feline roommates.

My partner and I have two cats in our home, both adopted from shelters, with no experience living or being around dogs (to our knowledge. They may have lived with dogs in the past, we’re not sure).

One of the cats (Tater) is a new addition that we just adopted about a week ago, and he’s very playful, but quite skittish to unfamiliar noises and things in general (not sure if that’s because of the new environment and/or his personality). Our other cat (Cheese), who we’ve had for a couple of years, is pretty fearless and takes things in stride. She also used to rub up and roll around with my old work clothes when I worked in a doggy daycare, and is very adamant about getting to dogs that she sees outside the window, so she doesn’t seem very put off by dogs in general.

My question is what’s the best way to handle this introduction? If the animals are fine together, I’d prefer that the visiting dog not spend all of his time in a crate. Of course, if the animals can’t coexist safely, we’ll find another way to house the pup safely. Thanks in advance for any advice!

My cat (kitten?) is pregnant and I have some questions.

I've had a boy cat for over a year which was just fine for me. Then my kid brought home a scared abandoned kitten. Of course it was a girl. -_- My plan was to get her spayed and him neutered right away but my health took a turn right away and I was a little bit too late apparently. She has all the symptoms of being pregnant and I do have an appointment set for the vet but I'm curious about some things. I've looked these questions up but I don't get anything specific to them.

Will a male cat continue to try to mate even after she's pregnant?

PLEASE HELP ME

REDDIT P L E A S E! Just found a 4 weeks old kitten, abandoned by its mother. This happens all the time here. She has an issue with her leg, dont know what specifically just yet. Im going to the vet in an hour but the thing is i already own 2 cats and my mother is going insane. One is a 10 year old, the other is a 7 months old. The thing is i already love this kitten so much. I live in a different city and im here with the 7 months old one for holidays. I dont think my mom will allow me to have 2 cats since im not completely independent (im studying). I think the kitten is really happy that i saved her. She was crying non stop and running away from everyone but the moment i picked her up she started purring like a machine non stop. Will she be sad if i give her away? Will she feel abandoned? Shes kinda sucking on my clothes so maybe she thinks im her mom. What should i do? How do i convince my mom to let me keep her? She is not talking to me right now and the moment my dad comes home, if i don't have good excuses, this kitten is out. (I won't let that happen though) HELP.

My cat is missing and it’s starting to snow

My cat went missing on the 22nd of this month, and we’ve been so lucky with the abnormally warm weather of the Midwest. Unfortunately, it’s started to snow, and my heart is breaking because I don’t know how long he can survive out there. We’ve done everything we can - we’ve stayed up until really late to greet him if he comes back, put out blankets that smell like us an him, food, water, heated sardines and tuna. We have signs everywhere in our neighborhood. We called shelters and hospitals. He isn’t chipped or collared (long story, I was under the impression we’d gotten it done). Also, he’s a black cat, now really vulnerable in the snow. Before we took him in, he and his adopted brother were part of a pack of community cats, so I have a little hope that he knows how to feed himself and stay protected. No one in my family has gotten sleep since he left and we don’t know what else to do.

going on vacation, cat is afraid of strangers

my family and i are leaving to japan on the 6th of Jan for 8 days and we are planning to leave our cat (1yr) at a family friend's place while we're away. we don't have any family members near us so our options are limited to family friends or a cattery. the problem is that my cat is extremely shy and afraid of strangers and always hides under the bed whenever we have guests over. i'm afraid that leaving her in an entirely new environment with new people would stress her out and affect her health. i've already brought her over to the family friend's place once so that she has some time to adjust but she seemed uncomfortable and scared the whole time and hid under a bed. i've decided to leave familiar things such as our clothing and her toys and bed so that she has something she recognises but i'm not sure if it will help much. my main concern is that what if she refuses to eat or drink? i've heard stories of cats dying after their owners leave for vacation due to not eating and drinking because of stress and it's really worrying me. is there anything i can do to ensure she feels safe and comfortable in her new environment? should i turn to a cattery instead? i don't know how reliable catteries are and i don't want to risk anything. i've also heard people say to not leave cats at a cattery. i'm not sure what to do, any advice would be appreciated.

Getting a puppy in a few weeks, need advice!! 🥰

Hi guys! I'm so nervous and soooo excited to be adopting a puppy in a few weeks!! She will be 8 weeks by then. I'm just wondering if what I'm doing will be okay with the pup.

• I work a really flexible job, so on MWF, I'm thinking of coming home every 2 hours to check in on the puppy, let her out and potty, etc. Is 2 hours alright, or should it be 1 hour?

On a similar note, on TuTh, I have school from 8 am - 2 pm. I will be hiring a pet sitter at 10-10.30 and 12.30-1 those days.

• Is it alright to leave my pup alone for 2 hours at a time?

• I have a semi-office job, so I can even bring her to the office most days. Is this a good idea or should I allow her to get used to being away from me?

• Should I put a pee pad next to her bed in her very large crate in case of an accident?

Finally, any other solid advice that'll save my life? I'm so nervous she'll be sad being alone for 2 hours at a time but I'm hoping to wake up around 6, spend time with her, go to work at 9, come home around 2 or 3... and spend the rest of the entire day with her!

Any advice for a new kitten owner?

Fate brought a lost 6 week old kitten, now 7, into my family and he loves people which is good. Just looking for any pointers since I’m a first time pet owner. I want him to be happy despite having to spend a lot of time alone, and I would really like to get ride of the whole hand attacking thing before he’s old enough to really hurt people.

My lost cat suddenly returned home after 2 years. What now?

Please don’t judge my story, just looking for advice on the best way to handle my situation.

I had/have? a cat named Bridey, I got her when she was about 6 weeks old. She was my first “responsibility”, and had gotten her when I was 20 years old living on my own in my first apartment. She bonded to me and we had a happy life together, just her and I for about 2 years.

I met my husband (then bf) about 2 years in to having Bridey, and we moved in together pretty early on. Bridey came with me of course, and she didn’t really have any interest in bonding with my husband or his daughter (my now stepdaughter, she was about 4 at the time). She wasn’t mean to them, just disinterested. She continued to love and bond with me, but I don’t think she wanted more than 1 owner. I think I should have rehomed her at this point to a single, older owner but I was worried she wouldn’t bond to anyone else. Plus I believe a pet is a pet for life and I didn’t want to give her up just because I was starting a family. We got a 2nd cat to give Bridey some company, and she seemed to tolerate the new kitty (Bonnie). I should also mention that Bridey wanted desperately to be an indoor/outdoor cat. She was quick and always tried to get outside, I resisted but she would resort to clawing through screened in windows to escape. At a certain point I caved, and she would leave for a day or two to come home and start the indoor/outdoor cycle. I made sure she was spayed, up to date on vaccines and rabies to keep her healthy.

Cut to 5 years later, Bridey is 7 and I married my husband. We move from the city to the suburbs, and I find out I’m pregnant about 2 weeks after the wedding. We welcome our son, and we had also gotten a dog about 6 months earlier. We were about as responsible as we could be, all animals had regular vet care and food/plenty of love. At this point, Bridey had started to stay outside for longer periods of time. She would be gone for 2-3 weeks and come home for a week or two. Obviously we started having litter box issues and she seemed to be losing weight, so I tried to keep her in the house for longer periods of time to keep her fed and make sure she was okay. Try as I might, that cat would find any way she could to get outside.

Fast forward about a year after I have my son, Bridey came home after about a month of being out and stayed for a few days. She got out again, and this time she didn’t come back. I blame myself a lot for this, because I didn’t immediately notice she had been gone for even longer than usual. I started getting worried about 2 months in, and we tried to find her but I had a feeling she would have come home by now if she could. We thought the worst, and always kept an eye out for her but there was no sign of Bridey.

Fast forward to about 1 hour ago, 2 years after the last time I saw Bridey. My husband and I were sitting on my front porch, and Bridey walks right past us, meowing but not stopping. I am 99% sure it was her, we tried to quickly feed her and care for her but she disappeared behind our shrubbery before we could bring the food out.

My main question is this, if she does in fact want to come home after all this time, what’s the best way to handle this? I am mainly worried about diseases/rabies because she is way overdue on vaccinations at this point. Most are only good for a year and she has been gone for longer than that. There’s also a concern of her being feral and a danger to my kids/Bonnie/our dog. A lesser concern is acclimating her to home life again, such as the litter box. There is also the thought that if she wanted to be home, she would have come home a long time ago. Maybe she is happier to be outside? We left food out for her, and I will wait to see if she does want to come home. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks for reading my long wall of text.

Will my kitten grow up to be more cuddly?

We recently adopted a 3 and half month old kitten. It has been two weeks and she is adjusting to the house.

Super playful, absolutely loves it when you play with her, but she's not very cuddly. At best, she tolerates being petted for a short time at night or when tired. She has never sought out being petted, or try to rub against us.

She can be affectionate though, and will follow the humans most of the times, also want to sleep next to people when she can.

When she does accept pets, she will purr loudly, and sometimes lick my hand.

So does this mean she will never become a cuddly cat? What will happen when she grows out of her play ful period?

Thanks.

How much would you spend on a vet procedure?

Backstory: A buddy who’s dog has a growth needed to be removed. After a microscopic investigation, no normal cells were found in that culture. The procedure to get it removed is ~$700. There is no assurance that it’s the final solution because only then will the biopsy . A biopsy is included in the cost and only then will he know if it’s benign, malignant, metastasized, etc.

On one side, I sympathize that since his first dog, a 6 month old, and it could be the first and last procedure. On the other, I view pets as animals and will treat them as so. I go with the mentality that if it’s not bothering them, why mess with it. If it’s causing severe discomfort, then I would reassess. If the growth turns out to re-emerge, then I would feel like the original procedure was a waste.

What would be the tipping scale for your pets vet procedures? How would you advise this person to proceed?

Two off leash large hunting dogs attacked my 3 pound puppy. She's ok, but advice needed.

I was walking my puppy this evening, her last walk before bedtime. She had a bout of diarrhea the last few days (because she's teething, vet said I have nothing to worry about, just stay hydrated), so she's a bit under the weather, a little tired, and definitely a little weak. She's almost 3 pounds, and my boyfriend can fit her in one hand.

Anyhow, a husband and wife couple from the neighborhood were chilling on a piece of the block that the city owns, not their own property, and they had two hunting dogs with them, some kinds of retrievers, both probably nearly 100 pounds each. Very tall dogs, very big dogs, is my point.

I saw them, and immediately told the puppy to heel, and she came close, staying right by my leg. She then saw the dogs, and tucked her tail between her legs, and whimpered the same way she does when I turn on the Roomba.

The two dogs must have seen, heard, or smelled her, because they both came at her. Neither one was on a leash, and they both started growling at her, and leaping towards us.

I yelled out first, "She hasn't had all of her shots, please keep your dogs away!" But when I saw that they weren't leashed, I made the mistake of backing away- I was scared of these two dogs running at me full speed- and the two attacked my pup. I yelled out, "Stop them! They're hurting her!" As she was yelping in pain. They responded by laughing.

I feel horrible about what I did next- I yanked on her leash to pull her away from them and towards me. It was instinct, I wasn't thinking. She yelped loudly, but I got her away, and picked her up into my arms, and she buried her head in my elbow. I then cursed out the couple, and informed them in certain terms that it's illegal to have a dog off leash outside of your own property unless you are actively hunting, flipped them off, and ran off.

I called both the HOA of the neighborhood and the cops to inform them each of the situation. The HOA was very apologetic, and will fine the couple (that's the most they can do right now). The cops had me file a report, and will issue a warning to the owners.

My pup is okay. She was bitten, but they just tore off some fur- they didn't have her long enough to draw blood. Maybe they were trying to play, but my pup was terrified. I tried to take her out again tonight, as she didn't get a chance to go potty on that walk, but she absolutely refused to leave my yard, whimpering when I started walking our usual route.

I'm going to call the vet in the morning. The pup is terrified, though, and shivering (it's 75F here right now, so it's fear, not winter cold). I could use some advice for what to do right now, and I could use some advice for what to do in the future, should anything like this happen again. Am I overreacting? I'm a little frightened too- I love my girl more than anything.

Adopted Group of Semi-Feral Cats

So, we had a large # of feral cats in our backyard about 2 years ago. We captured and delivered to a shelter all but 3 girls. We had the 3 girls neutered, and they're now largely left to their own devices, and fed 2x a day.

My understanding was that as they're territorial and neutered, unable to reproduce, we'd basically have a stable group of just those 3 cats. It's been nearly 2 years now, and there's a small cat, and a rather large male for a total of 5 now. The male fears me, but eats their food if it doesn't see me. And the small cat which appeared out of nowhere just a month ago is super friendly and doesn't fear me at all. In fact, it just sleeps around the house all-day.

Honestly, I do have affection for them, but I wasn't exactly planning on having pets per se, I'm just the guy who shows up for 3-5 minutes each day and feeds them. I wasn't planning on these extra cats, and am rather anxious that more will show up.

I do feed these fat bastards (Original 3 Cats) quite a bit, so I'm guessing they're not all that territorial anymore since they have an excess of food. Would just cutting back on the food help? Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

My dog tori who I have had since I was 8 and was the first dog I ever had, might have bone cancer. We were told there was a 70% chance. Tori is my baby girl, my best friend, and my favorite thing in the world and even the thought of her not being with me anymore devastates me extremely. She is a family dog, I knew she was getting old and I know she won’t live forever, but I’m a senior in high school, I have less than 5 months until graduation and I was hoping to god that when she passed, I would be out of the house. I know she hasn’t been diagnosed, but there’s a pretty high chance and waiting to get bloodwork for an official diagnosis is eating me up inside. I am a Christian, and as much as I’m trying to trust god with Tori, it’s very difficult sometimes. Basically, I am asking for any way that I could get this situation off of my mind, or feel better about it. Tori is my rock, she has gotten me through more than you can imagine and without her, a part of me is missing. Please give me any advice you can to get through this, to feel better about it or to cope with it. Thank you ❤️

Anxiety and Pets

This may not be the usual post about pets and anxiety, at least according to my searches on the internet.

People always say that pets reduce anxiety and stress in their owners and this is certainly the case some of the time with my cat. However, there are long stretches of time with my cat where she sends my anxiety through the roof. My cat is older, around 10, I got her when she was 9. From day one she has been a bundle of issues, from bad teeth I had to work two jobs to have removed, to discovering hyper-thyroidism, and more recently the early stages of kidney failure, all within the span of a year and a half. Now whenever my cat acts slightly off, be that being sluggish, not eating as much or a bout of constipation I get really stressed. I used to drag her to the vet, only to be told that it was gas, or nothing, "just give her some pumpkin", and getting a bill to boot. So now shes been (maybe?) ill, meowing loudly while going to the bathroom, and eating less. She's done this before, and usually it passes after a few days. But I'm still anxious. I am reluctant to take her to the vet because there have been so many false alarms before.

My question is this, how do you, especially the owners of older pets, deal with the stress and worry that your friend might not always be around , or that minor issues might lead to big problems? I'm so tired of pulling my hair out and feeling like either a worry wort or a heartless monster for feeling reluctant about taking her to the vet. I am resolved that if it goes on for too much longer then I will take her to the vet, and yes, give her some pumpkin. But in the mean time, how can I calm down??

Is this grief...

Our lab crossed the Rainbow Bridge in Sept., and now our house feels so empty (even with our beagle and cat). Over the holiday, my parents brought their elderly lab and mini Aussie with them to stay a few days. Having the house full of animals was so nice, and I especially loved giving attention to the lab. Now my husband wants to bring a puppy into our family. I have always loved animals, especially dogs, but for the first time in my life my heart just isn’t into it. We have the space, a great fenced yard, and resources to care for a new fur baby, but I’m not excited about it like I was when we got our beagle and our lab. Is this just part of the grief process? Am I selfish for shutting it down for awhile longer? I know my husband wants one, and having a companion may help with my beagles anxiety (it got worse after our lab passed), I’m just not 100% sure...

Introducing Cat and Two Dogs; need advice

Our players:

Cat = my cat, 15 mo/o

OBC = Older border collie, 9 yr/o. Mother to...

YBC = Young border collie. 3 yr/o

So my boyfriend and I have been discussing living together, and that means introducing pets. My cat has been dog-proven and actually grows to like them after a warm-up period. She is an excellent traveler, and so I've been bringing her to my boyfriends place every weekend/over holidays.

Now, boyfriend's dogs are /not/ cat proven. Never been. We did the intros under the door, seemed okay, dogs didn't care. However, now that everyone is out in the open, OBC has been acting odd.

OBC will follow the cat from room to room, either following her and staring intensely, or just laying down and watching. The cat is learning how to ignore her, and I witnessed her jumping over OBC this evening, but there is a little tension yet.

OBC will look directly at the cat so long as the cat is not looking at her. If the cat is looking at hee, OBC lifts her chin, turns her head, but stares at the general area of the cat. I've noticed this lessening as time has gone on and everyone seems to relax more, but it's still happening.

Tonight, cat was hiding underneath the table, pouncing at the edges of the tablecloth and OBC was watching, staring intensely at where she thought the cat was. Noses were sniffed, OBC carefully joined cat under the table, and the cats bubble was invaded so she hissed, but no aggression otherwise. It almost seems like the OBC is trying to interact, but doesn't know how? It's hard to parse.

YBC is slightly scared of the cat, but leaves her alone. Ironically, the cat has made several moves to try and play with YBC, but YBC is too skittish to play.

I'm at a loss because all of my childhood dogs have been raised with cats so it was just fine. But boyfriend has never had cats and the dogs don't know what to do. Anyone have any ideas? We have tried a lot of things.

My dog keeps getting attacked

So my jack Russell/chihuahua mix (7y/o) has been attacked for the 3rd time by my neighbors great dane. This time I was just feet away. Had I not been she'd probably be dead. My dog, as you'd expect, barks and stirs shit up but then my neighbors dog comes into my yard and snatches my dog up with intent to kill. my neighbors saw it and offered no apologies and I'm not sure what to do. After the 2nd attack ,in 2017, I got me a big dog to defend my turf. A great pyrenees/pitbull mix. Hes a good guardian but I had him tied up. I never tie him up, this was actually the first time I'd ever done so. We live in the country so hes either running loose( if I can Watch him), on a leash, or in my dog pen. Regardless hes never attacked anyone or anyone's pets. (He does kill gophers and shit) he loves all the cats, both my neighbors cats and mine but I guess because I let him run loose under my supervision, my neighbor thinks that they can do the same. The difference is my dog, while huge, is trained and wouldn't hurt a fly. I'm 28 and physically able to control my dog if things get out of hand. She is 65 and cant walk half the time. I dont know what to do. I'm worried that if I handle this the wrong way that my trashy ass neighbors may try to poison my dog but if I do nothing then my jack/chi may not be so lucky next time. I live in a small town and my neighbors have a bad reputation for being "trashy". Ironically when we asked about the neighbors before we bought the place we were told that they would be the best neighbors anyone could ask for. They are the worst. They pulled a gun on me because I took my trash down to the pickup spot and they claimed I was helping some guy they kicked out gt his stuff or something. Idk... I just know that this is a delicate situation and I need advice. Please help.

Also my neighbor watches the door to see when I let my little dog out and let's out her great dane every time I let "izzy" out. I also believe the great dane realized my great pyrenees/pit was tied up and that's why she attacked when she did. Smart dog, I'll give it that.

cleared coccidia, diarrhea persists

Our cat's coccidia test came back clear this week. She is on a special prescription diet and a probiotic, but the diarrhea has persisted. She moved to a new home this week, so there is the potential of a stress situation and a decreased likelihood of reinfection in a new place. Does diarrhea usually continue once the test comes back negative?

Cat Peeing On Clean Clothes

Hey all!

Bottom Line Up Front: Our fixed male cat keeps peeing on baskets of cleaning clothes.

He has two litter boxes that we stay on top of, and empty daily. We were late on getting him fixed (my girlfriend had him for almost a year before we moved in together) and he has started spraying before hand. These occurrences are thankfully rare, but if he manages to slip in to our closet when there is any gathering of clean clothes in a bunch on the floor or in a basket, he'll take the opportunity. Within the past 7 days, He's managed to pee on her orthopedic boot, one basket of her sons clothes, and one basket full of socks. I'm actually really mad about the socks, because she wouldn't let me fold them, took the damn socks from me and called me OCD (mind you, this was when we just cleaned them).

Does anybody have any advice?

Recommendations for pet-trackers you can put on a collar?

My cat is an escape artist and got out yesterday morning, hasn't come back. I'm worried sick. Assuming nothing's happened to him, this won't be the last time this happens. I'm hoping to get a RFID/GPS tracker to put on his collar so I can find him if he's missing for too long. Diabetes in Pets: Symptoms, Treatment of Diabetes in Pets

Canine diabetes has significantly increased by 79.7 percent since 2006, according to the State of Pet Health 2016 Report by Banfield Pet Hospital. Diabetes is somewhat more prevalent in older pets but easily manageable when detected early by an affordable vet Houston TX. And that means your beloved canine friend can lead a long and happy life in sound health. But if it is not detected too soon, it could result in complications that may require you to pay for the services of an emergency vet in League City.

Neighbor's dogs bark so loudly

So last summer my neighbors bought one German shepherd. My mom decided she should talk with the neighbor lady and meet the dog so maybe it wouldn't bark and growl at us every time we're in our yard. The dog ended up biting my mom on the wrist. My mom is a nurse so she was worried she might get some type of infection from the dog bite and went to our local urgent care center to get some antibiotics. It turns out the center is REQUIRED to report all dog bites to the police. (The police in my city have a bad reputation for being dicks and my mom did not want them involved in the first place.) After my mom got home, she thought it would be a good idea to warn the neighbor that the police would be coming to talk with them about the bite. The woman was pissed and said, "I'm college educated, that was not a bite. I see what type of neighbor you are." The rest of the conversation didn't go so well...

Fast forward to this summer, as if one dog didn't cause enough drama, they bought a SECOND German shepherd. (I live in a neighborhood with cookie-cutter single family homes. It doesn't make sense for two large dogs to be living in a house/neighborhood like this. There are lots of toddlers living in this neighborhood also.) This summer they finally told us they were putting up a fence. I was picturing a picket fence they wouldn't be able to see through but they ended up just getting a 5 foot tall CHAIN-LINK fence so the beasts can still see us. These dogs bark and growl EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into my backyard or even just slide open the back door. I am afraid they are going to jump the fence one of these days. (Is that even possible at that height?) It makes me want to carry pepper spray out back (although I haven't yet.) When they are outside it is very hard to relax and I'm constantly on edge. They even bark and jump at their front window when they are inside their house and they see us outside in the front yard. I can hear them barking in my BASEMENT bedroom and even in my bathroom in the middle of the basement when they are outside. A relative of ours told us an ultrasonic bark control device would be a good idea. Does anyone know of a good one that works? Does anyone have any other ideas to fix this problem? These neighbors are assholes and they aren't doing enough to fix this as we've mentioned it to them a few times. Thanks!

Cats suddenly aggressive and fighting each other

The other night I left the sliding glass door open to let some air in and forgot to close the screen door. Well our indoor cats got out. And since then they have been fighting randomly. One of them seems calm and relaxed like nothing happened. But the other cat begins to hiss and growl when she gets close and they get into it. What is going on? Any clues?

Friend’s dog ate a brownie?

I’m at my friend’s house and her dog ate some of the last brownie on the tray when I was in another room because I didn’t think he’d actually jump up to the counter and eat it. I think he’s about 80lbs and roughly 6-8 years old. He’s a yellow lab, if that helps. I think he’ll be fine, but I just want to make sure. I tried to call this ASPCA hotline, but it said that they charge money for the service, so I hung up.

Is it ethical to have an indoor/outdoor cat?

I truly think that cats are the happiest when they have a territory to roam and a cozy home to come home too. I know a cat can be happy if you give it enough entertainment in a home, but when you see a cat outside in a place where it’s mastered it’s boundary’s and can run and play where ever it pleases with complete freedom, it seems the most content. I would feel like a monster for keeping it imprisoned for lack of a better word.

On the other hand there are so many dangers, cars, coyotes, etc. It feels like too much risk.

Be but if I was a cat I’d risk those things to have a natural fulfilling life, I guess? I know that’s anthropomorphizing them but, I don’t know it feels like most only indoor cats yearn more.

So now that I live alone and have complete control over my own cat. (I don’t have one yet but will most likely adopt one in the future) I’m conflicted on the keeping it a strictly indoor cat or and indoor/outdoor cat. I live in a fairly normal American suburb so not the worst but not the best.

What’s your thoughts?

Cat will not stay out of kitchen and is getting worse

I am at my wits end with our 6 yr old cat’s behavior. She is always in the kitchen, on the counters, licking the stove top, licking the dishes in the sink, opening cabinets to get the butter...and now she’s getting on top of the fridge to try and open our chips and baked goods! This all started about 6-9 months ago, before that she never ate human food.

After trying spanking, spraying water, and eventually buying a 6 ft tall room divider to block the kitchen entry (which she has figured out how to scale) we resigned to just keeping the kitchen clean and wiping down surfaces every night. But now she’s escalating by getting into literally everything— doesn’t matter if it’s sealed or in a cabinet. This is ridiculous. Please, any advice?? What can we do? TIA.

Am I Making My Cat Uncomfortable?

A couple months ago I adopted this adorable tortoiseshell (abt 1 years old) and she was the sweetest little baby ever! She reminded me so much of my other cat that died really recently so I would often cuddle her and give smooches on her forehead. She didn't really mind anything I did until like a month ago, where she now (playfully) scratches me a lot. (I know it's playful because there are no annoyance/anger signs like tail twitching, flattened ears, etc) I don't mind the scratching, I'm not hurting or squeezing her when I cuddle, and she still sleeps right beside me every night.

I have another cat that I do the same with and he purrs like a motorboat and snuggles right back to me, but I think that's because I've had him for 10 years.

I'm just worried that she doesn't like me very much anymore because I can't resist scooping her up to give her kisses. Should I stop? Should I give her space? This is serious by the way.

My puppies anus is the size of a quarter

Since Friday night I saw a big piece of poo on my 10 week old puppy’s anus and when I went to go take her a shower and removed the poo her anus was enlarged to the size of a quarter. My puppy is small. I want to say 1.5-2 lbs. We live in a very small town so all the vets aren’t open till Monday morning and she’s been okay, still running around and playing. But her anus smells HORRIBLE. She also looks like she had constipation so I’ve been giving more fiber. But she seems to be in pain at times and I’m feeling all types of guilty. Is there anything I can do till tmrw morning to help with pain or keep her anus uninfected?!

I REALLY want a green-cheeked Conure, but my mom isn’t a fan of birds.

When I say she isn’t a fan, I mean she hates them. I on the other hand absolutely adore them. I really want a green-cheeked Conure and even said I’d pay for the bird, cage, food, toys, and whatever else. The only thing I want her to pay for is the vet stuff.

She said it’s not about the money, just that she doesn’t like them. I really want to convince her that birds aren’t bad at all. The main reason she doesn’t like them is because they look “creepy”. I said I would keep it in my room when she’s home so she wouldn’t have to see it, but she’s so stuck on her first statement.

I’m normally not one to beg for things, this is just so important to me though. I’ve done all the research I could on the internet and asking veterinarians and breeders. I’ve had past experiences with birds and I think I’m ready to care for one on my own.

Any ways to convince her? I guess I could try to tell her all the things I’ve done to learn and care for them but I’m not sure. I have that feeling that all she needs is a good experience with them and she’ll be attached to them. The same thing happened with my sisters cat, (lives with my sister, but used to live at our house).

Cat won't stop shitting and peeing on our things

Hi all! I'm at a bit of a impasse with my cat, who I have had for one year. I love him a lot, but he doesn't like the litterbox, and uses it about 60% of the time. Lately I've been cleaning up poop from our carpet everyday, and he has pissed on my roommates bed 3 times. I've changed the litterbox a few weeks ago that he seems to like okay, but is still using it about 60% of the time.

It smells generally bad in our apartment because of it, it's quite embarrassing when we have guests over. I don't want to get rid of him, but he is going to run my roommates away and ruin the apartment at this rate. What do I do? How do you properly litterbox train a cat? He isn't neutered, and I'm wondering if that would help. I would really hate to have to give him to another home, but I can't continue the way it is now unfortunately.

Thank you!

Why does my cat constantly eat?

I have a cat that just wants to constantly eat and he pretty much will do just that at meal times. I can't even feed the other cat in the same room as him as the second he's done with his food, he'll push the other cat away from her dish. He never used to be like this either, it's only been a recent thing. I was able to have two different food dishes full of food and that would last 2 - 3 days and now just one dish doesn't last more than 10 minutes. And if I don't have food down he will just constantly yowl and cry out. I have no idea what to do as this is the first cat I've had issues with when I comes to food and I can't just keep buying the big bags every week because I still do have bills. Is it wrong for us to lock our cats into a different room while we are eating?

Hi! There's a tldr at the end. Me and my husband (using his account right now because my phone is broken) have two about 8 months old male cats (and a dog but that isn't relevant I think). One of them, Freddy, doesn't try to eat our food (unless it is olives, corn or chestnuts, then he goes crazy??), but the other one, Ketchup, does not leave us alone while we are eating. It's especially bad when my husband is eating meat. It doesn't help pushing him away, he always comes back and tries to snatch whatever we are eating (It doesn't even matter what, he wants to eat rice, potatoes, vegetables, pasta, literally anything), and I also don't want to yell at him or even hit him (lightly I mean, like cats do it to each other, not to hurt him, but to showhim I dont like what he's doing? I don't know if that would be even ok) So we have developed a habit of putting them (both of them, so Ketchup isn't alone) in our entrance room, where they have their litter boxes and one of their water bowls.

Now the thing is that I feel kind of bad about taking away their freedom likr that? Is it cruel to them? As soon as we're done eating and putting everything away, we let them out, and they rarely cry anymore.

Is there anything we could try to do to avoid doing this? Or is there maybe not even a problem with doing that?

Thank you in advance for any help or advice!!

TLDR: One of our cats does not let us eat in peace and keeps trying to snatch away our food, is it ok for us to lock him and his brother in a seperate room while we are eating?

How much should I charge to watch my roommates (sick?) cat over the holidays?

My friend and I (in college) live together with our cats. She has two cats and I have one. Since she’s from out of state, she’s gone for a total of 3 weeks for the holidays. I’m from nearby, so I’m back in our house already since Christmas is over. Around Christmas, myself and another roommate checked in on her two cats intermittently.

As of now, there’s a little over a week until she returns. I’ve been home three days and have had to clean up diarrhea off the floor every day from one of her cats.

Normally I’d be perfectly fine receiving just a bottle of wine or something for watching her cats, but the amount of attention and cleaning this one cat needs is the equivalent of a part time job.

She offered to pay me for every diarrhea spot I need to clean, but never specified a monetary amount. I know a pet sitter would have costed her at least a couple hundred bucks (probably more because of how much/frequent he has diarrhea). I’m not sure how much to ask from her because it’s really no problem to watch them, but the diarrhea all over my stuff is really bringing me down.

Dog licking paws constantly?

Hi! My baby is a 7 year old border collie/sheltie mix. Lately she is CONSTANTLY licking her front paws. Just lays there licking them. I’ve checked for sores/wounds and haven’t found anything, and there’s no sensitivity to touch. Does anyone know what the cause of this could be? What do I do about my neighbor’s crying dog?

I live in a pretty big city, but in a pretty quiet section. Behind my house lives a pup who I’ve seen when walking from time to time. From what I can conclude, they keep the dog outside all the time. Now, I know that dogs can be kept outside. But I truly do believe that they keep that dog out without a warm dog house or even a bed. I’m not entirely sure about this, but this dog is constantly crying. All day you hear the dog crying, and it’s so loud that you can hear it even when you’re inside. Now I’m not the type of person to want to intervene with other people’s private lives, but is there anything I can do to help this dog? I used to tell myself that it was howling, but it is clearly crying to get out of the cold. It gets pretty cold at night where I live, and my parents and I feel really bad for this dog who cries all night. Can anyone give us advice on how to help this dog, if it’s even possible?

Advice on fighting Guinea Pigs.

I have adopted two male guinea pigs today as their previous owner could no longer care for them.

They've moved into my house however are in their same 2-story cage. They're both ~5/6 months old. As far as I am aware, they were bonded and living happily together under their previous owners care. Today, the day they were brought home, they had began rumbling, teeth chattering a fighting. There are some very minor bites around their mouths however one of the pigs has sustained a deepish bite on the side of its paw. It bled quite a large amount however has since stopped bleeding and after being cleaned with saline solution, seems to be rather minimal in damage (I'm unable to gauge it's depth due to fur), and the pig is walking with it's full weight and is not limping.

The pigs have of course been separated and will remain this way for the night. I'm unable to take the guinea pigs to vets as it's currently 00:30am, so would like some advice on what to do next?

I've read that they may fight over dominance and they've now moved house, and can be re-introduced. I'm unsure of when to reintroduce them, or whether they should instead be kept separately permanently? Will they continue to fight once reintroduced? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks all.

Mice are so loud! But amazing ha

I got pet mice a while ago and the noise hasn’t been to bad but I got another older one from a pet store that I wanted to give a good home to for however long it has. But, it drinks water and runs on the wheel ALL NIGHT are there any cheap (if even possible free) ways to muffle the noise so I can sleep? Any advice is appreciated

Our cat keeps swatting at us as we walk past, and she rarely cuddles. Does she hate us?

My boyfriend and I adopted our cat when she was three months old. She was found on the streets at about one month old, and fostered for two months, before coming back to the shelter until we adopted her a few days later. We've done nothing but dote on her. She's going to be a year old in January.

We give her lots of treats and wet food (along with her dry food of course, we did research into the best brand for her), play with her regularly and pet her whenever she's nearby or just plain being cute, which I assume she likes because she often purrs when we do.

Despite all our love though, I just can't help but worry that she doesn't love us back. She'll swat at us as we walk past sometimes, mostly without claws, but a few minutes ago when she did it, I felt one of her claws get me, and it really hurt. Additionally, she rarely cuddles, and when she does, it's only on the couch. She never sleeps with us. After we got home from a trip spanning a few days, she would often cuddle with me on the bed while I was using my laptop, but she stopped doing that after a few days.

I don't think she's ever intended to hurt us. She's never hissed at us or anything. I'm still worried she doesn't like us, though. I'll see posts of peoples cats being affectionate, and feel jealous, because our cat is nothing like that.

Genuinely curious: why get a pet if you’re just going to keep them outdoors?

My neighbors have this cat and yesterday I came home and he was on my porch. At the time, I didn’t know the cat was my neighbors (it’s my dads home), and I thought he was a stray. The cat wasn’t neutered, seemed to be starving and while he looked healthy, he was shivering and clearly wanted attention.

I sat down and loved on him and eventually went inside and grabbed him a bowl of my cats food. He SCARFED it down in literally seconds. He was so hungry. I ended up giving him another bowl, which he also ate quickly and then kept meowing at me. After this, I called my dad and asked him if this was anyone’s cat and he said it was my neighbors.

At this time, the neighbor came home and the cat got excited and ran back to his house hoping to get indoors. Right as he got up to the door, the owner pushed him out and told him to stay outside — where it was about 30 degrees and rainy and they have no outdoor shelter for the cat.

My question is why on earth get a pet (cat or dog) and force it outside at all hours? It’s clearly bad weather, the cat obviously wanted inside and the owner didn’t care. Nothing makes me more annoyed! Granted, these people have had NUMEROUS animals confiscated by animal control and then go out and buy another on Craigslist.

Adopting A Cat

Hello!

I am looking to adopt a cat and would like to ask a few questions about the process and cats in general.

- How does the adoption process usually go?

- Are adoption processes usually long/tedious?

- Would it be better to get a younger or older cat if I were to be looking for a sociable cat?

Thank you!

Question for other dog owners!!

So my blue heeler just turned 3 years old and I never had him fixed, mainly because I wanted to have one of his puppies eventually! However, I was just curious and wanted to hear other people’s thoughts/ experiences about not having their dogs fixed! Any problems, concerns? Is it better to not get him fixed now that he’s ‘older’?

Advice for kitten

Hello :) today I got a very very young kitten, he is 6 weeks old his mom rejected him at birth as be was the runt. He has been hand fed and taken care of before coming to me, but i need some advice!

He's very young but doing extremely well so far, playful and eating, of course tons of naps.

This is going to be our first night with him and i am wondering what to do with him?

I was told that a large bin with blankets and his litter was a good place but I just want further advice.

My doggo.

My fiancé doesn’t like my doggo sitting on our new sofa. When she goes to sleep my doggo jumps up. He doesn’t ask and I don’t say anything. It’s a mutual agreement. I even covered him in the heated blanket tonight since it’s cold. This secret can’t get out till marriage.

Pet insurance?

After our pup broke his toe and we have spent thousands of dollars, we are highly considering getting pet insurance for our dogs. Not trying to spend a ton, but also want the coverage to be worth it. Anyone know of any good companies/deals? Thanks in advance!

Advice on getting a sick cat to eat?

My 10 year old cat is pretty sick. He has tumors in his abdomen. We aren't sure if it's cancer because his bloodwork is normal and the only way to find out is exploratory surgery. They seem to be pressing on his stomach, so he can only eat small amounts and it may be painful. We tried giving him medicine to shrink them, but it is super traumatic for him. We gave him a pill last night and he was hissing and growling and swiping at me, even an hour later. I'm trying to get an appointment to talk to the vet about other medicine options and if surgery is a viable route.

But right now I just want him to eat. He has lost around 7 lbs and is very skinny. He loses interest in foods and we have to keep finding new ones and hope he likes them. He went from loving wet food to not eating it at all, he just sniffs it. Right now he has a certain kind of dry food he will eat a bit of and a wet food treat he likes. I got him to eat some wet food by pouring some of the treat on it. He usually eats very small amounts throughout the day, but he still isn't eating nearly enough. He's a Maine Coon mix and his healthy weight is 18-20lbs, and he is 13lbs right now.

I'm also a little worried his sense of smell is going. He had a hard time finding his bowl, we usually have to set him next to it every couple of hours.

Does anybody have advice on ways to get him to eat? Or at least get some calories/nutrition in him?

Looking for a dog

We lost our goofy, loyal, love-bug of a lab in Sept due to cancer. While we could never forget him, and he’ll always have a special place in our hearts, it’s because of our love for him that we’ve decided to open and home and hearts to another fur baby. We have an elderly beagle and cat (who also miss him), so want to be sure we find the right companion to add to our home. We’ve been keeping an eye on the local shelters, but they either are not cat friendly or don’t get along with other dogs. Where else should we be looking? I am open to a rescue or puppy, I just want it to be a good fit for all of us. Should I just keep watching the shelters?

How’s it going, mastiff owners?

I had a discussion with vets here a couple of years ago who did not understand statistics (sadly not unusual or surprising). So how many mastiffs here are allergic to poultry after all?

My cat hates me. Help!

I moved for work six months ago and left my cat with my parents. It was going to take several days to drive to my new state and my cat hates cars so I decide to wait until Christmas when I could fly back with her. Before I left I had her for 2 years and we were really close. She slept with me every night and would run to meet me when I got home. Since coming home 5 days ago my cat wants nothing to do with me. She stares at me with hate in her eyes. I tried putting her in her kennel to take her to the vet and I have literally bruises. She had never been violent with me or anyone else. My mom had to take her and she’s completely healthy. I’m supposed to fly with her in a few days and I’m not sure what to do. I don’t know if she forgot me and sees me as a stranger or if she’s angry I left her. I want her to be happy and comfortable but my parents don’t want to keep her and so it’s either me or rehoming her. How do I fix this? Is she going to hate me forever?

Vegetarian Dog (not really)

Does anyone else have a dog that will turn near treats down for veggies? I can give my Yorkshire/Jack Russell mix a choice between a piece of chicken or a veggie and she will always go after the veggies. Wondering if she's just weird.

New Kitten + Old Dog Sleeping Arrangements

My awesome wife surprised me today with a new kitten!

We have an 8 year old dog who sleeps in our bedroom (floor not bed), and while they are getting to know each other, it's probably best that they don't sleep in the same room.

We've set up my office to be kitten-proof (he's 4 months old), and he's got everything set up in there.

My, probably silly, question is this: is it necessary to have one of us sleep in the same room with him while he and the dog have to be separated, or would we be fine leaving him alone through the night?

Rehomed my baby... Should I delete his pics? How do I move on?

Hey everyone ♥

Recently I've become homeless, and I was forced to rehome my cat as a result. I did try reaching out to those I knew to see if anyone could temporarily board him, but I had zero luck...

This cat was basically my only friend for 3 almost 4 years. I got him when he was only 6 weeks old. And having to give him a new home is probably the hardest thing I've ever done.
It's been about 2 weeks now. And I'm not sure what to do about all of the pictures of him I have saved on my phone. It's too hard for me to look at them, but at the same time, the thought of deleting the pictures makes me sick.
I don't know whether it's going to be easier on me to delete the pictures or whether I'll regret deleting them later.
I also am wondering about the fact that... He's not mine anymore. I don't know if it's even appropriate to keep his pictures.

Any other advice on how to heal/move on? I've pretty much had to ask everyone around me to avoid even mentioning the cat's name, as it's enough to bring me to tears. I've never gone through this before, so I'm at a total loss on what to do. I feel stuck.

Has anyone heard of a cat jumping into a hot oven?

My roommate’s half year old kitten is very energetic and curious, but also a bit of a dummy sometimes. She’s VERY interested in the oven. Before she has ran at it from the side when I opened the door. Today she stood up and put her paws on the top of the door when I opened it. If I hadn’t noticed I’m afraid she would have tried to jump in and gotten severely burned (oven was 400F). She could have burnt her paws on the door itself if she’d put them any further back.

I’m assuming this is extremely unlikely to happen since I always pay attention to her when I’m using the oven, but has anyone heard of this happening/had this happen?

Why is my dog never excited to see me, or like me?

It's the family dog it's not necessarily my dog but imma just say my dog for ease of use.

Anyways, I feel like my dog absolutely hates me. He is NEVER excited to see me when I come home, like I came back from my first semester of college and he runs up to all excited then when he sees it's me gets a sad look on his face and then goes back to whatever he's doing. Other times when he knows it's me he doesnt even come to the door. On the other hand every one else he literally jumps out of his skin when he sees them and hes whining and wagging his tail and trying to jump on you. For my brother if he is literally gone from my dogs site for more than a second then sees him the next hes super excited no matter what my brother is his favorite. I'm not mean to my dog either, in fact I'm the only one that feeds him from the table and let's him sleep on my bed (this isnt 100% true as others in my family do the same just not to the extent I do XD) My dog only sleeps in my room if my brother is gone and my parents are snoring super loud... I try and play with him to but he just isnt interested or gets scared, hes a scardy dog. Anyways I wanna know what the frick I'm doing wrong and as to why he hates me to much...

My kitten bit me (accidentally) , concerned

So one of my kittens I have ( 3 months) was adopted from a shelter. He was normal and cute. Loveable and friendly at home.

I got nipped trying to get plastic out of hid mouth. Accidental bite. I immediately went to the dr, got anti biotics . Went to my local er and was administered shots into the bite site.

Has anyone had this issue before?

No symptoms from him etc , and assumed the shelter wouldnt let us adopt if he was sick

Why is my dog waking up barking with nightmares?

Hi everyone,

So a few months ago we got a puppy and she is always perfectly friendly and playful while awake, but when she sleeps she will sometimes wake up suddenly barking loudly with what I assume are nightmares and when she does, its a total reversal of her personality where she'll suddenly explode growling and barking for maybe 10 - 20 seconds before she calms down and returns to normal. The thing is, it seems like she only does this while sleeping on top of or near people and rarely if ever while in her cage. It makes it difficult to have her sleep on the bed at night (or even during the day next to me) because no one wants to be woken up at 4:00am with a dog freaking out. She's only 7 months old atm but she's been doing this for months now. Is this something dogs tend to grow out of or is this an issue? I've only had cats prior to her so I don't know if this is normal but I can't imagine it is.

Thanks for any advice!
