My 8-9 year old mixed breed dog is suddenly lethargic, barely able to walk and not eating well.
He was doing fine a week ago. He became suddenly very lethargic on Christmas Day and I thought he may be just missing my husband (his number 1 human) who just moved out of the country. He seemed to be ok the next day as he wanted to go for a walk- just not eating much and lazing about. On Monday I called the vet and he went in. They called to let me know that he had indicated that his elbow was in pain and they found a previously undetected heart murmur. The vet didn’t think either of those would be the cause of his sudden change in behavior so we ran some blood tests. He is slightly anemic but otherwise the blood test was normal. The vet thought he might just be sore or have arthritis and wanted to try anti inflammatory medication to see if there was any improvement. They gave us rimadyl and I have given that to him for about two days now but there hasn’t been any improvement. I just wonder if anyone has any idea of how a healthy dog could go from happy and energetic to barely able to move almost overnight.

Dog Surgery
Happy new year r/pets!
With all the food from media noche, I think my dog swallowed a bone (pork spare ribs) from the trash cos I caught him snooping there last night. He's still energetic, no lethargy or anything, but he vomited his brunch this morning.
Anyone here with the same experience or has had a dog undergo surgery for extraction?
I've lost a dog in the past and don't want to experience it again anytime soon. Thank you for your help!

Boyfriend hates dog
I adopted a dog in February and my boyfriend hates him. He keeps talking shit about my dog, telling me he’s so bad, ugly, mean, aggressive, but I don’t feel like any of that is true. My dog is one year old. He rarely bites, and if he does it’s because he’s playing OR you’ve done something he’s already shown you he doesn’t like. An example of this is my dog doesn’t like being picked up. My boyfriend just picked him up while he was eating. I feel like that’s just something you shouldn’t do, especially knowing the dog doesn’t like being picked up. My dog bit him and he went “I hate him so fucking much”. I get weekly training with my dog and the trainer doesn’t seem to think any of his behaviour is aggressive or inappropriate. I’m honestly so tired of having to put up all my boyfriend’s complaints, it’s annoying and untrue. I feel like he goes out of his way to bother my pup and when my pup defends himself, I get shat on. He does the same with his dog; he thinks it’s funny to make her growl all the time. Anyone have advice ?

Advice on training a cat that doesn't like anything?
Recently I've come to the conclusion that I have to trim my cat's nails at home unless I want to drive an hour and pay $30 every few weeks. The only problem is she is a VERY anxious cat and won't even let me touch her paw without immediately tucking it under herself or just walking away. I've tried acclimating her to having her paws touched for about a year now and still nothing. So far I haven't found anything at all to reward her with because she doesn't like treats, human food, or even her kibble unless nobody is near her. She also doesn't like to play so she has no favorite toys to use as a reward. I normally wouldn't even bother with trimming but she doesn't scratch at anything at all despite having a full cat condo with scratching post and she's started getting stuck to everything when she walks.
Is there anyway I can train her when she doesn't like anything?

Elderly Cat Coughing / Wheezing Suddenly
Hi there! As the title says, I have a very elderly cat (17), and besides some dental issues and arthritis, she’s very healthy for her age (as of last vet visit earlier this year, at least). Of course this happened over New Years weekend, so vet will be out of the office until Monday, just wanted some peoples thoughts and experiences in the interim.
Her arthritis and teeth sometimes bother her a lot, so we have some gabapentin on hand for episodes where she’s clearly having issues eating or walking, but it’s traumatic to give it to her so I avoid putting her through that every day.
About a week ago I noticed she was sleeping a bit more than usual, I figured she’d just been in a bit more pain than usual, she tends to sleep more when her hips hurt more.
Today she was pretty needy, wanted cuddled and held a lot, and I noticed her meowing loudly from whatever room she was in until I came in to see her, at which point she’d follow me out. An hour or so ago she came up from her bed in the basement (her favorite spot), I heard her stop behind where I was sitting and start making this hacking / wheezing sound. I fully expected her to have a hairball or vomit, but she wasn’t arching her back or opening her mouth, at which point I realized she was likely coughing / wheezing. The fit ended within a few minutes, but I’ve not seen that happen to her before.
She hasn’t eaten a whole bunch today, but she does tend to normally have days where she doesn’t eat much, so I’m not sure if she’s had any loss of appetite. She’s currently in her “nip box” (cardboard box I put some fresh catnip in every day) sleeping it off.
I’ve had a mild cold for the last few days (no, not THE virus, just sniffles and sneezing mostly), I’m wondering if anyone knows if it possible I passed it to her? I don’t think she’s ever had a cold before because she’s strictly indoors, but I myself have an immunodeficiency disorder, so I do catch bugs that other people usually would not.
Any thoughts? Could it be something I gave to her? Anything I should watch out for? Does this sound like a cat cold?
Just a bit at a loss of how to help her for now
EDIT: totally forgot to add, she had a somewhat loose stool today, but she generally does have a sensitive tummy given her age. We are on a pure soft foods diet for her due to her teeth being sensitive as well.

Having trouble figuring out how much to feed my two kittens.
Morning -> Fancy Feast (Variety 24 pack) - I usually split 1 3oz can between the two kittens. - (https://www.chewy.com/fancy-feast-grilled-seafood-feast/dp/103972)
After that I usually just let them freely eat dry food (https://www.chewy.com/fancy-feast-tender-feast-variety-pack/dp/185228) -> I usually fill their bowls whenever it is near emptying. They usually come throughout the day to eat.
Is this approach fine? They currently weigh around 4lb and are around 15 weeks old.

Which company do you use or would you recommend for pet insurance for your fur babies?
I’m looking around and there are SO many differences between these plans. Some only cover hospital care, some only preventative... some require you to go to in network doctors. It’s so complicated. All I know is that I lost my girl to some unknown disease and I’m not gonna repeat that nightmare.
Tldr: what company do you use for pet insurance?

my missos hates living with a cat
my missos and I have been living together since she moved to a new area where I got a job.
she feels so lonely and depressed for a while due to the new place.
no friend and no one talk with her. even she is a bit difficult to get a job because she is a student and bit hard to manage work schedule.
anyway... her depression has been serious she often cries and annoying to me. being more obsessed and so sensitive.
so I thought getting pat which it helps her symptom, and she also wanted but she wanted to wait it till we settle down..
otherwise, I wanted to see the cat at petshop with her. when I visited there, I instantly wanted to get the cat. we were arguing, she really denied to get the cat instantly. she told me she is not ready.
she said..
she has a low immune system.. and skin. she is a bit worried about as well.
and she hasn't got any work and school schedule. her goal is settle down, getting a job, her school with enough income(but my income is stable I can support) for her life goal?
.. she just moved here for us life..)
anyway, we argued and with my begging.
we brought the cat,
but after that, she extremely cares hygiene, and clean the house.
she put the cat into box as well,,(I can not understand)
she said she wanna take her own time without bothering,
but I think cat does not bother it.
i can not understand putting a cat into the box.
even she feels so jealous due to my behaviour which I give more attention to cat.
i said this is not competition why you feel jealous about that ????
i think she is overthinking and overcare.
how can I understand it?
whoes fault?
*she had pat before. but she has garden at her house so she lived seperately
she feels so uncomfortable sharing house and things together.
hairs and things...
i said living separating is impossible.
we sort of negotiated living.
except room, the cat can move everywhere.
but she keeps clean the area.........
what should I do?

i recently moved into my boyfriends place with him, he has a big dog but she is very calm. i thought that if given enough time my cat would get comfortable with the dog but it’s been over four months and my cat still hisses and attacks the dog as she walks by. thankfully i’ve gotten them to be able to be in the same room but i can’t get her to stop being mean. any suggestions?

Should I keep my cat in the condominium?
I have started to move last month, preparing to adopt one of the stray cats (4 months). Not sure if they are still considered strays because they stay on our porch most of the time.
Yesteday I brought the kitten to the condominium and I can say he is very stressed as he was excessively rubbing and biting/clawing me sometimes. I'm now having second thoughts, it's sad to leave him again in my parents' house but I realized that his quality of life is better there as he has a bigger place to explore (outdoors only) compared to this indoors only life, also he has other cat friends there. Although outdoor has some risk since a small number of cars pass by once in a while but I think the kitten is used to it at this point.
I'm the one who mainly feeds the cats as my parents and sister only feed them leftovers. I have given my dad some food to feed the adult cats that are left there but I'm afraid it's not as much as before as condo life is very expensive also I'm assuming the adult cats are used to finding food in someplace else like the neighbors.
So my question is should I bring the kitten to my parents house again so he can explore again? And another question is should I leave him there or should I bring him back to the apartment.
Right now he is sleeping and calmed down a little bit, but he is not as active as before since there are no trees, bugs, other cats/people etc.

My cat almost non stop meows. Please HELP!
Hello so i adopted this stray cat when he was just a kitten. I also adopted another kitty a little younger than him for a playmate. They’ve both been wonderful cats. But recently his behavior shifted drastically. He’s about 6 months right now I think. Ever since he’s gotten bigger I think he’s hit puberty and has progressively acted worse. I want to get him neutered ASAP to curb his bad behavior but all the vets I called are booked until February. So this is what he does... when I first get off work he’s fine for the first few hours. When he’s being a good boy I make sure to love on him, give him treats, play with him. Then at about 9 or 10 (last night he started at 7 :|) he starts this high pitched awful whiny meow. He mostly does it at the front door like he wants to go outside. We let him out once and he absolutely freaked out and was trying to climb up the door to get back in within a couple minutes, and there’s lots of stray cats around so I don’t want him to get in a fight or something. So he’ll whine at the door forever then walk around the house whining and go back to the door for hours. Usually he stops after a while but then when we go lay in bed he waits til we’re almost asleep then runs in our room and starts doing it at us. So now I have to lock him out of the room at night. I have mental health issues and it makes me have trouble sleeping as it is sometimes, so with him waking me up constantly I’ve been really struggling getting through the day. Well, at first that worked pretty good but now he just comes up to the bedroom door and meows as loud as possible through the door until it wakes me up. He did this 3 times last night so finally I got up and put him in our spare bedroom across the house. I can’t hear him in there which is great but I don’t want to leave him in there all the time. I read that any reaction at all can make him act worse. Is putting him in that room bad? If so what do I do before I go insane from his behavior?? And also this morning as soon as I woke up he was following me around the house meowing while I was trying to get ready. And he sprayed somewhere because it smells reallllly bad. I promise he has food, water, toys, clean litter. Everything! So does anyone know how I can make him bearable to be around until he can get to the vet?

My cat's overseas and I think he's cold. What to do?
My cat's currently in Europe and I'm back home in the US for the holidays. I'm here only for two weeks so I didn't wanna stress him out by moving him from one continent to another and then back again. My roommates have all left too so he's home all alone. I have two friends who check on him once a day every day and today my friend told me my cat was shivering. Turns out the heat in the apartment is not working. The apartment is heated using radiators in each room (I'm assuming steam boiler heating) and it's not working; the radiators are cold and all the rooms are unbearably cold, as described by my friend.
I called my landlord several times with no response. My friends have also called him several times with no response. Being the end of the year and a holiday (NYE and NYD), I'm assuming the landlord won't fix it until the 2nd; the fact that no human beings are in the apartment currently, will make the landlord think that he can take his time with it, I'm afraid.
The max is 45F and min is 27F outside. That is too cold for my baby since the inside won't be that much different. I'm worried and scared that something will happen to him. My friend asked to take him to her house house until I come back so that's a possible solution but I don't think he'll even let her pick him up and put him in his carrier, which is a bit too heavy for her to carry through a 15min walk.
I'm just really worried and I'd appreciate any good words, suggestions, thoughts, or helpful points. Thank you!

Cat having problems
This morning my cat was walking funny and was throwing up everywhere and also fell down the stairs. My sister called the vet for an appointment, took her in, and it was until just a few hours ago when we got what we wanted to hear. They fully checked my cat and she has arthritis in her spine and possibly had a stroke. I gotta keep a very close eye on here and make sure she doesn’t get hurt at all for at least the next week for two. She’s now passed out in my room probably still high from the heavy drugs. It wasn’t the first bad thing either. She once scratched her ear so much she popped a blood vessel. She now has one shriveled up ear. Things can really catch you by surprise.

Lost my cat tonight after only two months with him.
Hug your pets a little tighter tonight. Here I was thinking that I'd have a few years at the very least with my adopted cat, but one vet visit and some sad phone calls later (all in the span of five hours) and we had to put him down. I wasn't expecting to have to make this decision so quickly, but between surgery with uncertain success (meaning we'd be paying thousands and he may have died anyway) and letting him pass comfortably, we chose the latter. It's life, but it sucks. I am glad that we got to spend every day together and that I have a lot of memories with him, but am still in shock. Cherish the time you have.

Is sedating a cat for air travel bad?
So I have been preparing my cat for a long flight because I am moving for an internship for the next 5 months. I have been preparing her since the moment I knew about it, since about September. I have been taking her outside to get used to loud noises and most importantly, bought her a new crate that I leave near her feeding area and feed her in. She is very comfortable with this crate and even sleeps in it sometimes on her own accord. This is the crate I will use for the trip.
As I began preparing, I read an article that said they sedated their cat for a flight trip. I’m not a cat expert but that sounded like a good idea, so I brought my cat to the vet and they prescribed her a tranquilizer.
The veterinarian recommended testing out the tranquilizer medicine before the flight so that I could make sure it worked and see the side affects. Yesterday I did so, but honestly I felt terrible. My cat looked so weak and was trying so hard to walk around but couldn’t. She had to poop at one point but didn’t have the strength to make it to the litter box so she pooped in my room. I couldn’t help but feel guilty seeing her so tired and weak. Also, when the side affects began wearing out and she could move more, she seemed grumpy.
I was upset by this so I did more research and I saw some articles about how sedating cats for air travel is bad. I was confused by this because the vet gave me the prescriptions so willingly and didn’t even warn me, plus that one article I originally read had had a good experience with it. Plus I did research on Twitter and a lot of people seem to sedate their animals for air travel, so I really need answers: is it better for them or no?
I will call the vet tomorrow and ask, but I’m asking here because I’m worried they’ll be closed for New Year’s Eve. My flight is New Years.

Someone has been taking the collar off of my cat...don’t know who it is, but can I do anything legally if I find out?
I got my cat a new collar because her old one was too small. The new one had my name, phone number, and address. She has had no problem with collars in the past what so ever. My cat has a routine of going out for an hour at a time every couple hours or so. One day she came back with no collar. I just thought she took it off by herself, but was unlikely because I made sure it was put on tight. Oh well. I’ll get her a new one
I get the new collar put it on her and then a couple days later, she comes back from being outside with again, no collar.
Im PISSED, I now know someone has been removing the collar from my cat!! I suspect it might be because they want to either claim her for themselves, or they want to call the pound to get and later claim her there. I hope that may be the only reasons.
I don’t know what to do because I don’t have time to keep an eye on her at all times while she is outside. It there anything threaten to do if I catch them doing anything to her (other than a traditional approach✊🏽). Im extremely worried because I live a low income area where unstable people aren’t uncommon.
Thank you so much for some feedback 🥲

To travel with cat or not?
My girlfriend just got a cat and we’re deciding what to do to make sure she’s okay when my girlfriend travels. We work from home currently due to covid. However we are in a distance relationship and rotate visiting each other every weekend. My place one weekend, hers the next.
So here are the parts to our current dilemma.
-
Have the cat travel with her to my place? This would be an hour drive to my place and back to hers. This also requires crate training which we’ve started from day one. We’re worried about how traumatic this would be for a cat, especially considering she’s new to us.
-
Leave the cat at home? My girlfriend is new to the area she’s living in and doesn’t know anyone as it’s hard to make friends during covid quarantine restrictions. There’s also not many friends or family around to check in. We’re afraid a weekend is too long for the cat alone. Especially this early since the cat is just getting used to us.
I know we will learn and grow as cat owners and we want to do right by our new kitty and also not drastically change our routine. Any suggestions, tips and ideas are welcome. :)

6 month old dog growls at kids when tired/hungry
Need some advice. We've had our dog for 2 months and she is GREAT, except for one thing: she's consistently aggressive to our kids 7, 9 and 11 year olds when tired/hungry.
They love her, and do not tease or over stimulate her. And she loves them when she is not tired or hungry.
We've been crate training her and taking her to obedience training as well. We also have worked on her food hoarding fears by have kids over "treat" her on and off meal times.
Today we went for a long hike with her, and she was really tired. We got home, ate, and then fed her. After, I was in "her" room with her (and she was done eating!), and when my 7 year old walked to the door, she snarled and ran at him and even bit towards him.
We put her in her crate for a nap, and just took her out to pee and hang with us. The 7 year old came in again to say goodnight, and she snarled again. In a mindless moment, I got angry, shouted NO, and dragged her back to her crate :(.
What are some suggestions on how we can end this cycle? Again, she's great with our family. We would ideally be able to feed her near us someday, and have her not be scared we're going to take her food away, and she should be able to regulate her mood even when tired. She's likely going to grow to be 120 lbs, so really want to handle ASAP!

What are some good pets for someone who works full time?
I am going to be graduating college soon and I want to get a pet when a graduate, but I will be working full time. I can’t get a dog because it would be super lonely. I was thinking a cat might be better, then I read that, while they’re independent, they still crave human interaction and will be lonely without their human. For this reason, dogs and cats are out. I love ball pythons and think they’re adorable, but my parents told me that they won’t visit if I have a reptile, especially a snake. I want something I’ll be able to hold but won’t be lonely while I’m at work. I’m going to be an engineer working in a plant

Please help! Cat suddenly drooling, do I need to rush her to the vet?
So my cat was acting normally all day. Then went to my husband for some pats about 10 mins ago and he called me in to look at her. She is suddenly just dripping drool. It’s foamy and she keeps licking it back and then seeming to retch but she hasn’t vomited yet. But she is now hiding under my chair and doesn’t want me to see her.
It hasn’t stopped so far and doctor google has me scared. The website said to monitor her for an hour and if she doesn’t stop drooling take her to the emergency vet. Is that right? Should I wait the hour or just take her now? Please help!

Dealing with feelings of anxiety/depression after adopting a cat. Advice appreciated!
I'm a college student currently living alone and attending school from my apartment due to the pandemic. I've always loved cats, and I've been wanting to adopt for a while now. About a week ago, I adopted a 5 year old cat. He is very sweet and laid back and has been slowly adjusting to the apartment.
I deal with depression and an anxiety disorder that I've been managing well, but I was not anticipating the wave of anxiety I'd feel once I brought him home. He's very well behaved and laid back, but I still find myself worrying whether he's ok while I'm away at work. What if he gets hurt while I'm away? What if he's bored? My apartment is positioned so that it doesn't get much natural light. What if that's limiting his quality of life somehow? What if he'd be happier in another home? I've grown up with pets and never felt this way, so I suppose it's my reaction to being fully responsible for the health and happiness of a pet.
Recently, I took him to the vet because I noticed some blood in his stool. Thankfully, it's not serious. I've been monitoring his stool and giving him his medicine. Since last night, though, he's been having occasional sneezing fits so I'm considering taking him to the vet again soon. This triggered another bout of anxiety.
I'm aware that some of my worries are probably overreactions (my family and friends have told me this as well), but I occasionally find myself so feeling so overwhelmed and guilty that I cry. Basically, I feel like I'm being crazy, and I worry about whether I've made a mistake.
Has anyone else here felt this way? Does it get better? I'm scared that these feelings won't go away.

Moving an older outdoor cat
Hi my cat is an 17-18 year old outdoor cat and because of a sudden life change we have to move to an apartment. My mom said that he couldn't learn to be an indoor cat and it would stress the cat too much and that it would easier to just put him down. Those news left me devastated. I did some research and I think it might be possible for my cat to come with us but want some opinions/advise on this. I just want what's best for my old buddy.

How long does high protein (e.g. 80%+) dry cat food last once opened?
I want to buy a large bag of it because of a deal, however it would be redundant if it spoils before it's eaten. Most common cat kibble has cereals, grains, etc. and additives as a large fraction of the recipe, hence it lasts long without perishing. What about the ones without?
Edit: meant to say 80%+ animal ingredients, not 80% protein.

Can a vet be wrong about fleas?
Hi all,
Our vet told us today that he saw a flea on our (indoor only) kitten and gave us 2 dozes of Revolution spread over 2 months, with the instructions to vacuum our floors and furniture 3-4 times weekly over the next 2 months and to wash all of our kitten’s bedding, blankets etc on medium/high heat. We got pretty freaked out, applied the topical treatment between his shoulders and vacuumed the apartment. We bough a flea comb and combed him through to find any evidence of fleas, like larvae or flea dirt. Didn’t find anything. We’ll obviously continue with vet’s recommendations but I was just wondering if there’s a chance he could be wrong? Or are evidence of fleas indeed so difficult to find? Our kitten scratches behind his left ear occasionally, but we always though it was some strange kitty behavior. Sometimes he also shakes out his head, and we specifically combed though it and found nothing.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Cat not making jump that I know it can make
My six month old cat isn’t even attempting a jump i know it can easily make. I’ve seen it make jumps that are two or three feet higher than this one. For context I want him to jump from on top of my bed to the top of my chest of drawers which is where the cat food is (I have dogs so I have to keep the food somewhere the dogs can’t get to but the cats are able to reach.). None of my other three cats have any trouble making this jump either. When my cat was younger I always left a drawer open half way up the chest of drawers to make it easier on him, but now I’d like my drawer back. What can I do to help him make the connection that he can jump? Right now I’m just leaving the drawer closed and I don’t think it has even occurred to him that he can just jump up to the food as he just stares at it while meowing.

Why is my cat like this?
My SO and I have 2 cats. Between the two of us, they each have their favorite human. Cat A prefers me and Cat B prefers my SO.
Whenever my SO leaves in the morning for work (approx 2 hours before I do), Cat B will climb into bed and go under the sheets to cuddle and knead me. Any reason why she does this? I’ve noticed a pattern — it consistently happens after my SO leaves for work...I’m not her favorite and she never does this to my SO. Curious to know what people’s thoughts are on why she does this. TIA!

I feel bad for punishing my puppy
Whenever my puppy does something bad, let’s say for example; biting the curtains, I always just yell at her first. But that doesn’t seem to work. I shake her sometimes but she just fights back. She tolerates yelling, and being shaken, and I don’t wanna hit her. So I decided to put her in her cage. Then she starts crying loudly, but I decide to keep her in until she calms down. The thing is, she didn’t. So I let her out, and she rushed straight to the door crying. I think that means she wants to leave. After that, I noticed that she did the bad thing less.
I don’t know what I should do to discipline her instead. I mean, this is the only thing that worked so far, but I hated seeing her cry. Any advice?
FYI: She’s 2 months old and has been with us for a week.

Scratched by a turtle, area around cut immediately started burning.
I was putting my sister’s turtle back in his tank since she forgot, he always scratches when you pick him up and he got through the skin this time. My hand immediately started burning so I put some hydrogen peroxide on it but it’s still burning, and itchy. What’s going on? Is it infected? It doesn’t look infected, but it might be.
Actually it could be just stinging and I’m mistaking that sensation for burning.

I gave my cat away and I'm feeling extremely sad
I had her for 3 years and giving her away makes me feel so upset as she'd been with me through my ups and downs. The reason I had to give her away is because I couldn't afford having her spayed as it is really expensive in our country, and she gives birth 3-4 times a year which is extremely overwhelming for me since the adoption process of her kittens takes too long and I have a lot of responsibilities to take care of. She also gets sick a lot everytime she gets pregnant so I tried to put her in a cage everytime she's in heat but it didn't work as she always finds a way to escape. I also went to the city vet here in our country and registered for the free spay program, but unfortunately I have to wait for years because their list is filled as there were too many registrants.
I also have 5 other rescue pets, the other one is suffering from a tumor and it has to be surgically removed which is really expensive for me because I am just a student and we are a mid-class/ low-class family. My parents are both self-employed and they only earn 15k pesos a month ($300) and that is not even enough for us.
I've been crying a lot and hurting myself lately due to stress and depression caused by worrying about how I am supposed to provide them their needs. If only I am capable of paying for her needs, I would have done it without a second thought.

My cat ate a ribbon and has puked, does she require the vet?
This has happened once before and the vet ended up being a waste of nearly 2000$ so I'm reluctant to take her back.
She ate two ribbons that were in my room and puked up one but the other is still inside her, this one I know was tied in a bow. She's puked up one other time since the first ribbon came out (two total pukes) and otherwise she is acting normally, drinking water and using her litterbox and sleeping with me as usual. I estimate it's been about 12 hours now, I checked her tongue and it's not stuck on there as far as I can tell.

Kitten escaped apartment...
This evening, my 5 month old cat must have slipped under my legs and ran out the door. I didn’t notice it at first because it was dark and he’s pretty small and dark gray. I didn’t notice it until I put my stuff down and realized he wasn’t in the apartment. I looked all around the apartment complex, it’s an outside one, for hours. Is it likely he will find his way back? Does anyone have some advice for me..? I’m worried sick and cannot believe I didn’t notice him sneak out.

Trying to adopt a dog, but I live in an apartment?
I’ve been looking for a dog for a week now, to rescue. However I can’t seem to find a dog that according to petfinder, is suitable for an apartment. I live in an apartment which makes it really hard to find a dog I want because a lot of them seem to require a fenced yard. I live in Toronto where you need to literally have millions of dollars to your name in order to even dream about a fenced yard.
I’m just sort of looking for some advice and motivation to keep looking. Every time I fall in love with the dog through the pics and vids provided, I read the description and find that it’s not suitable for an apartment. My last application got rejected. Do you think I will ever end up finding a dog. I’m intimidated by this process

Adoption regret, please help...
I don't know what to do. I just adopted a cat a few days ago, and I'm feeling uneasy about it. Prior to this adoption, I already had a cat (let's call her S) -- I adopted her this past March, and she is the sweetest, most affectionate, most talkative kitty ever. She's basically my perfect cat, and I fell in love with her instantly. My brother was fostering her during the beginning of quarantine, and I adopted her after she'd spent a few weeks with us. I had been told by the shelter that she had come from a house with 5 cats and a dog, so I thought that maybe sometime down the line I could get her a friend. She's pretty needy, so I figured I would try and get a friend before my job goes back in person eventually, especially since I live by myself now.
Flash forward to now -- I sent in an adoption application to a local shelter, and because of covid, they match people with a specific cat and you don't get to meet them beforehand. They told me a brief description of him (1 year old, can get along with female cats, sweet), and then I got to see a couple pictures of him, and that was that. He was the only option they gave me. In hindsight, I felt a little pressured into making a decision because of how quickly the process moved and how in demand cats are right now (at least in my area), and I ended up going through with the adoption.
I brought home the cat (let's call him F), and he was freaked out, as to be expected. I'm a huge cat lover, I've grown up with them, and I love just about all of them, but when I first brought him home, I didn't feel that same sort of connection that I felt with S (or any other cat, for that matter). He doesn't feel like MY cat. He's given me love headbutts and sat in my lap a few times, but it still feels off. He's the biggest cat I've ever seen, his eyes are always HUGE, I can't tell how he really feels, and he plays fairly aggressively with toys. I'm scared to try and do much at the moment that he doesn't initiate for fear that he'll end up biting/clawing at me. I'm keeping F in his own room, but every time I go in there, S keeps meowing nonstop because she wants to be with me and is upset that I'm spending time without her. It breaks my heart. Also, when trying to slowly introduce S and F, they both hissed at each other. I know that should be expected, but I have NEVER heard S hiss before, even though she's been stressed out before, and that really hit me hard. I never expected to feel this broken and emotional about this whole ordeal.
I feel like a terrible person for feeling like maybe I need to give him back to the shelter. It feels like I'm letting both F and S down right now, let alone the people from the shelter who let me adopt F. I just don't know what to do, and I've been crying about this whole thing a lot. Any advice anyone has is appreciated.

Advice for an old dog
He's a large mixed breed, we think chow/shepherd/bully mix. He's got lots of lumps, the vet said they can biopsy them, but he's too old to do any surgery on. I don't feel like the biopsy is worth the pain it would cause him. Any thoughts or advice is very welcome. Tia

My dog is being aggressive
for the last couple months my dog has been becoming increasingly aggressive. if you touch him when he’s laying down he will show his teeth or growl or snap at you. he’d only growl or snap whenever you’d pick him up but now he’s been doing it a lot more. whenever he would come back from walks we would have to clean his feet he would normally be very cooperative but now he growls a lot more. he’s a small/medium size dog. he has a little french and little spaniel in him too. we’ve talked to trainers but honestly they haven’t been much help.

Is My Dog Depressed?
I have the happiest dog in the world, who is ALWAYS smiling no matter what is going on. We'll be sitting on the couch doing nothing for hours but I'll look over and she'll always have a huge smile on her face.
Recently I moved to another home and my partner and her cat moved in (the dog has lived with cats before and gets along with them well). For the first 6 weeks, my dog was still smiling nonstop. Recently, she has stopped smiling completely unless we are on a walk. We take frequent and long walks, but whenever we are home she is moping, withdrawn, and sometimes even hiding in another room which is completely unlike her. I am wondering if she realized the new human and cat are here to stay which is why she became depressed, but it seems strange that she would be fine for 6 weeks and then suddenly have a change in temperament. We have lived in a few other living situations with other humans and dogs/cats but she hasn't acted like this before. Maybe she is jealous because more of my attention is focused on my partner?
I have been trying to make extra effort to spend one-on-one time with her, take her on walks, etc. but she just seems so depressed. It's such a stark contrast from how she normally acts.
Does this seem like depression or perhaps a warning sign of an illness? She went to the vet a couple months ago and was healthy. If it seems like depression, any recommendations for how to help her?

My dog has randomly started misbehaving and is extremely stubborn about it. Any suggestions?
So my dog (he is 5 years old and I’ve had him from a puppy) who is otherwise super laidback, has suddenly developed some new habits and I’m not sure why or how to stop it.
From about a week ago, he’s started marking on my living room coffee table, excessively sniffing the floor and furniture (like extremely excessively), and has a new thing where he immediately goes for your ears and won’t stop licking them.
The marking is obviously annoying, but the sniffing and ear thing may not sound bad on paper, but he will literally sniff the same spot for minutes on end and click his lips after, almost like teeth chattering. Google says the lip clicking is gathering or processing information but he will do it over and over and over again. The ear thing isn’t a problem necessarily but it’s so uncharacteristic and not something he’s ever done before so it’s kind of strange to me. I will literally have to tell him to stop any of these 20+ times a day, only for him to start again a few minutes later.
There’s no new animals or people, no changes in furniture or anything. Everything is exactly the ways it’s always been.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what could causing him to act out or had a similar experience? Thanks!

How can some people like Cats better than Dogs???
I feel as if every dog I have ever had has felt like a family member. I have cares for them just as much as my family, and would give up anything for them. With cats it is a different experience. I have never owned a cat but from cats I have been around, it seems their owners see them as more of something to please themselves with a couple times a day. Dogs truly love you, and while there are many cats that care for their owners, their care is nowhere near the level of love and affection that dogs give off.

Are there any animals that can live comfortablely in a 10 gallon?
I just received some mice that someone couldn't have anymore and they came with a 10 gallon. I plan to move my ball python to a 50 and move these babes to her 20. I wanna do something with it, but I'm not quite sure. I was thinking maybe turning it into an aquarium and finally having a renewing tank of snails and shrimp. Maybe even with a mystery snail. Or going with a tarantula. Or a bug tank. But I wanted to know if there was other options.

Any ideas to stop my cat from peeing everywhere ?

I really don't know what could be causing him to do this . We don't have any other pets in the house since my other cat passed in late September of this year .
A little thing you should know , when my family found him , he had a rubber band wrapped around his balls as a cruel way to spay him .

Desexing my cats
I have 2 female cats and I’m looking to get them desexed. The VET clinic lady I spoke to said it was $265 per cat. Although this would be better for them in the long run, my financial state is a bit ehhh....so I don’t know how I’m going to afford around $500 for just desexing. Are there any cheaper options? I heard shelters do it for cheaper but I’m not too sure. And is spaying/neutering the same thing as desexing? There are some discounts on desexing every year in July, BUT I don’t want to wait that long of course.

She pees in the kitchen and beside the couch in the living room. None of them are closed spaces. None of them are private. She used to use her litter box but after she got sick (she vomitted round worms and watery stools), she no longer uses the litter box even if i always clean it. She's feeling better now, her stool is of normal consistency. But she never uses the litter box anymore. So i always need to chase her and follow her around the house. I always try to put her in the litter box if i catch her in the position to pee or poo.

2 cats: one won't let the other eat his food
Hi all, my family have been taking care of 2 cats for well over a year now, one was owned by a neighbour who abandoned it and one is a stray. They have separate shelters to sleep in and are fed every day. The abandoned cat is an adult cat while the stray was still a kitten when he showed up (about 7 weeks). Lately the adult cat has been attacking the kitten when he tries to eat his food, scaring him off. The adult cat has only recently been comfortable with me petting him, even allowing me to brush him twice. The kitten is pretty jumpy but loves getting head rubs. Why could the adult cat be attacking the kitten? It's only in the last 2 weeks this has been happening (they fight from time to time but not to this extremity) and it's not over food, because they both get plenty and the adult cat has no interest in the kittens food. I'm worried the kitten isnt getting as much as he should. How do I stop the adult cat from doing this? Thanks in advance

Is it alright to keep a cat to one floor of a house?
My cat has escaped the house far too many times, and tonight my Dad got tired of it. He and his girlfriend helped me find him (after nearly an hour and a half of searching) and said he would not do that again. This time, I agree. Ultimately, it's my pet, my responsibility. He shouldn't have had to do that.
He has on multiple occasions told me that I should just keep him upstairs, where our rooms are in the house. He can only be downstairs (where he likes to hang out, but also is perfectly suited for him to escape, since I hang out in my room a lot) if I am downstairs too.
My question, is it okay for that? The upstairs area has a bathroom, my room, and a small-ish landing with some space for him to roam. My Dad's room is also here, but lately he's gotten annoyed with my cat, since he's become a bit of a handful and my Dad just won't deal with him anymore.
I may also have to resort back to locking him up in my room while I and my Dad is at work. Only issue, is that once my Dad gets home, I don't know if he will let him out of my room anymore, since I can't trust my Dad to put up the gate that keeps my cat from going downstairs when he isn't allowed.

New kitten and trying to do everything right, but might have messed up step 1
So I brought my kitty home and I took her right out of the kitten carrier and put her in the apartment. She was not too freaked out, sniffing everything but definitely nervous (tail down and legs close to the ground).
Eventually I realized this and within 20 minutes I put her in a smaller room with all her stuff and left the door slightly open.
Does this kinda mistake make a difference or am I overthinking?

Taking cat to shelter to adopt out tomorrow, feeling very sad
Before you grab your pitchfork, the backstory is not "I irresponsibly adopted a cat and now I don't want it anymore".
TL;DR: I took in an abandoned cat, felt like I was going to try and keep him, but now am taking him to a (no-kill) shelter to be adopted out. I feel horrendous and beyond sad. Sorry the rest of the post is so long, I don't keep a diary so this is where all my feelings are coming out.
Short story long: I have had cats all my life and love them, but never had a cat of my own as I hadn't lived alone until ~4 months ago because of financial struggles. I now live in a ~500 sq. foot apartment in a huge sprawling complex that has an extremely steep non-refundable pet deposit (plus a refundable deposit, plus pet rent) -- and as I said, I've had a lot of financial struggles, so when I moved I made the conscious decision to not get a pet until I was stronger financially and in a more pet-friendly living space.
And then 3 weeks ago I heard some extremely loud meows outside my apartment door. My particular building has an outdoor hallway that is basically all concrete and very echo-y, so I could hear all my neighbors opening their doors and talking -- and I pretty much ignored it because I figured someone's cat had run out and they were trying to corral it back in. Curiosity got the best of me though, and I eventually opened my door, only to find a large tabby leaning up against it meowing, and as soon as I opened the door he walked in. None of the neighbors knew where he came from, so I decided to find out if he had an owner & take care of him since he "chose" me.
He was so immediately personable and loving, jumped on my couch and slept with his head on my lap right away (after scarfing down a ton of water and food, as clearly hadn't had either in a while). He didn't have a chip, and was an 18-month old cat that hadn't even been fixed so we guessed (based on his general behavior, medical-status/appearance, normal 12.5lb weight, etc.) that he'd might have been abandoned a while ago but wasn't a life-long stray.
I got him all vaccinated, cleaned and groomed, got him neutered, etc. etc. -- all while feeling generally stressed and unsure about keeping him because of all the reasons I'd already decided not to get a pet, but also almost feeling like I had to since he came to my door. The emotional conflict between me loving him and wanting to make it work, but also feeling like this wasn't the right situation for me or him continued, but I was attached and was really trying to ignore my hesitancy.
He was super cuddly and sweet most of the time, but also was a little aggressive about food (and once about his litter box). At the time I thought that the lashing out was because he was in pain and couldn't play very much post-op, but once he healed the agitation increased since he had more energy and nowhere to expend it. Anytime I would stand up he'd think he was getting food, he'd sleep next to his bowl, start crying for food the second he finished eating, jump up on the counters/trash can, etc. Though I played with him a lot, and tried to curb his behavior with "time-outs" in my bedroom and an automatic feeder, he was just bored, and mad about being bored, and that energy would come bursting out at me in the form of him attacking/biting in those moments of his irritation if I was walking around. And like I said, my space is extremely small, so there was really nowhere for me to go to de-escalate the situation without getting more injured (or him feeling more defensive).
I ended up deciding to try and let him roam around outside a little, since that is where he came from, and for about 12 hours thought I had solved my problem. He returned after 4 hours, ate without crying for more food, slept, ate again without being aggressive, and slept all night. But in the end that experiment only re-enforced my original feelings. He needs an actual house/yard with much safer roaming grounds and easy in-and-out access (I can't exactly put a cat-flap door in my rental), and where I live is just not conductive to a safe indoor/outdoor experience -- and even if he should be indoor-only for his general safety, he needs an indoors large enough to run and play, maybe in a house with other pets where he can wrestle and get a lot more stimulation, and in a place that doesn't have the kitchen/living room all in the same room where he thinks every movement leads to food.
If I had gone into this situation with the intention of just fostering him through his neutering/healing I don't think I would be quite as emotionally wrecked, but because I thought he might be able to stay I feel so unbelievably guilty and sad. Every time I look at him I start crying, and though I really do feel like finding him a different home will be better in the long-run, I can't seem to stop beating myself up about it -- hence the insanely long essay to try and process my own feelings on the matter.

Help: Getting puppy at 6 weeks, anything special I need to know?
So, I've had a dog prior. We recently lost our black lab of 15 1/2 years (still miss her dearly), and by a stroke of fate will be able to get a chocolate lab in Jan., and they will be at 6 weeks old (not our choice, that is when the person is giving them away).
I believe when we had our initial dog we got her at about/little over 8 weeks. I was wondering if, being two weeks younger, there was anything else specific I should be worried about with early puppy development.
I want to make sure I give this pup a great life, and don't want to mess it up from early on, and I'm just mega stressing I'll do something wrong. (Just because it would be two weeks younger)

Young Cat has too much energy for my other cat
So I adopted a young cat (young). Our current cat is super sweet, gentle and loving so we made sure to try to get a calm younger cat so that first cat wouldn't get to stressed by the move in but unfortunately the behavior of the kitten changed a lot and this new kitten has a tendency to pounce on the other cat, bite, scratch, etc. And my first cats behavior is changing to more timid and less loving in general she's much less comfortable with this kitten around and she's too gentle to do anything but hiss fight him off and run of. and me and my significant other are very worried and not to mention being driven crazy as well. I can deal with training a kitten. but the first cat is a emotional support animal who we care about more than anything and I cant deal with my cats life being worsened and her behavior changed by this kitten. we pull him away and put him in a separate room to play with toys when he bothers her, I don't want to have to return him he is a sweet heart but I am genuinely worried that he would be happier with someone with more time and space for him to play and a cat that wants him around. I could really use some outside voices here so any tips or opinions help thanks!
TL:DR; new kitten has too much energy and pounces on my cat and my cats to gentle to play like that. Would kitten be happier elsewhere? or should I train more?

HELP: My roommate’s cat hates everyone but me. Why?
My roommate got a cat about a year before I moved in with her. I’m assuming she smothered her too much, as she is one of the most antisocial cats I’ve ever seen. She barely likes to be pet (except for when you give her ear scratches or booty pats), refuses to be held, and really doesn’t even like when people get close to her. We only know she’s around because of the little bell on her collar.
I’m rather reserved at my apartment. I keep to myself and don’t really socialize with my roommates that much if at all. But for some reason, her cat really likes me? She will jump on the counter or table or where ever I’m standing to get close to me, and I am literally the only person that she’s ever willingly sat in the lap of. Like, seriously, the only one and it freaks my roommate out a little bit. She’ll just jump on the couch and nestle in on my chest for a bit until she decides she’s had enough.
Does anyone know why this is? Is it because I don’t socialize as much and given the fact that she was smothered as a kitten, she doesn’t see me as a threat? It’s just all very strange — didn’t know if someone knew the reason as to why this is!
Thanks in advance.

You don't nesseary need a large cage for your bird...
I've recently watched a few bird care videos because people learn their whole lifes and I want to give my birds the best life they could have.
In a lot of those videos one of the first advices is "buy a large cage because birds need to fly around to have a happy life" which is not true..
Obviously you'll be taking your bird out of the cage and this is their time to exercise and a cage won't replace that.
A better advice is "choose a cage that will suit your and your bird's needs".
Your bird spends all day outside the cage? Choose a small cage, one that will be easy to clean and allow your bird to spread their wings. A small cage is easy to cover with a blanket so you won't struggle every night with it. It's also easy to move so if your bird isn't tamed you won't have to struggle with putting them in a carrier when you'll have to take them somewhere.
Your bird is spending a lot of time in their cage? Choose a big one so they could fly a little and move around. A bigger cage is also getting dirty slower.
Also, in those videos noone talked about the shape of the cage. Birds have different personalities. In general birds with longer tails prefer to fly while with short tails climb but it depends on a individual. If you notice that your bird prefers to climb get a tall cage so they'd have a lot of room to do that. If your birds love to fly get a wide cage.
Saying " get a large cage" isn't helpfull for a newbie because both tall and wide cages are big but don't fullfill the same needs so someone could end up with a tall cage and a "flying" bird.

Declawing a cat
Hello pet people.
I have a cat (about 9 months old) and a 10 pound dog (somewhere around 6ish maybe). They get along great. But the dog only has one eye and is not the brightest. They constantly play fight with mostly harmless intentions. Anyways, the dog is constantly getting scratches and licking them, causing hot spots. He has to wear the cone quite often now days. More importantly, we are concerned that he could potentially get his only good eye damaged as well.
My wife has been very consistent about cutting the kitty's nails and tries to keep those little plastic nail caps on him as well. But cutting his nails seems to be ineffective, and unfortunately, the plastic nail caps have created other issues. Multiple times, I've found the cat crying because the plastic nail cap got stuck in a crevice or on a corner around the house. Once, it even got caught in the dog's hair and caused them to both freak out. My wife and I are very concerned about something like that happening in a "worst case scenario".
My wife has been thinking more and more that we should get the cat declawed. I usually trust her about animal decisions because she's always had multiple pets growing up. She's very good about spending time with them and treating them well. She always seems to know what's best when it comes to the well-being of animals. But declawing a cat seems so bad to me. I can't get over taking away such important natural tools for an animal.
Is the health of my dog and the potential of avoiding an incident in the house worth declawing a cat? Has anyone encountered any issues with a declawed cat? I just need some general advice. I know my wife would listen to me if I were to object, as she's very on the fence about it. I just don't know if it's a situation where declawing is warranted. Help!

My kitten (17 week) jumped from 7 ft up. He doesn't *seem* hurt, but I'm panicking
We adopted two kittens last week. They weren't litter mates, but after the first two days in our home they've been playing non-stop, and it can get pretty wild at times.
Our stairs do this weird thing where there's a little 1 ft ledge on one side. Supervising the kittens all week, they seemed to realize that jumping from that ledge was too high, and they would just walk to where the ledge isn't 7ft high but only 6" or so - the top step. Well, this morning they were playing, and one was chasing the other, and all of a sudden the little guy being chased just jumped right off the ledge at the highest point - about 7 feet down to the bottom step. He landed on his feet but instantly froze up - I think out of fear.
I held him for a couple minutes, examining his legs - he did not meow at all, just stayed real quiet, and didn't seem to mind me touching his paws or legs -- then he hopped off my lap and walked away. He's been playing a little bit here and there, but definitely avoiding any rough play with our other cat (which until today was pretty much ALL they would do). He seems to be walking fine, ate his dinner, and mostly has been sleeping (which isn't too abnormal). But he's been much less playful it seems.
My husband thinks that he is just fine since he is exhibiting no signs of pain, but I am so worried about how quiet and despondent he is has been since his "big jump". Am I right to be worried? Should I call the vet?

Am i doing the right thing for my cat? really need some advice
First time cat dad, she was a stray i picked up. She was very playful and affectionate. A week or so she went into heat and starting yowling and presenting herself. I toughed it out..and she seems to be done with her heat cycle but her personality has just changed so much... no longer wants to play and cuddle. I also suspect shes over grooming honestly. I set up her appointment in about two weeks to get her spayed (Shes been the vet two other times for vaccines). I'm just wondering if its even worth it... not for my sake but for hers. I just want her to be happy. Am i doing the right thing? Please let me know if i can provide any more details

How to get roommates to understand my cats...
My roommates don't understand my cats. They see them as these crazy out of control creatures that are always getting into mischief. I have to lock them in my room at night to ensure they don't knock everything off the counters or destroy the kids toys or pee on all the furniture. They are constantly yelling at them for various reasons that don't make sense. "She was going to bite the baby" or "he was going to scratch the boy" or "one of them was about to pee on one of the toys on the floor" stuff like that.
But see... When I got these cats, they were 8 weeks old and very impressionable. I brought them into a home that already had a kid, and talks of another kid in the near future. That was over 3 years ago, and now the other kid is here. But in that time, I've put in a lot of work to teach my cats to be kid friendly. They don't scratch or bite humans, they know it's only acceptable for toys, and know the difference between toys vs hands and feet. The older kid has never been hurt by either of my cats, and now that there's a baby, she hasn't been hurt either. So I don't get why they are constantly accusing my cats of "trying to bite the kids."
As for the peeing issue... My boy has inflammation and clogging issues, as that's common for male cats. I stay on top of it, as soon as he's showing signs of a struggle, I get medicine from my vet to reduce the inflammation and to manage pain, and he's on a lifetime prescription food to keep him in check. While he's having an episode, he stays locked in my room until he's recovered, and I clean up all messes immediately. Neither of them "go" outside of the litter boxes because of behavioral reasons. Most of them time when my roommates accuse my cats for "about to pee" somewhere, they are just getting in a comfortable position before they sit down or lay down.
They don't knock things off the counters. They have only broken two non cat toy items in their 3 years of life, and those were both my fault for leaving it in their way. First was a glass cup I left on the edge of my bed, and it fell when my cat jumped up, the second was a ceramic bowl I left too close to the edge of my dresser and my cat bumped it while walking by. They have never purposely knocked anything down unless it was a toy, they aren't destructive, they don't scratch the couch because we have a scratching post close enough that they prefer, and outside of the rate occasion that they decide to push boundaries, they stay off the counters and table.
I've set up the baby monitor in the living space while I'm away to see what my cats are up to just in case maybe they are up to no good without my supervision, but they are very well behaved there as well, so I don't understand what is their deal?
