Introducing a sweet cat to a stubborn, aggressive one

Hey all. I just got a new cat about a week ago. She’s so sweet and is acclimating very nicely. However, my resident cat is not so happy. Resident cat is a 16-17 year old grumpy grandma with behavioral issues. She growls and hisses ferociously whenever she catches a peak at the new cat. At one point, she was swatting through the door because new cat got too close. I’ve tried the feeding at the door ritual, the door cracked open ritual, but my resident cat is just not having it and I feel bad for the new cat, who is scared to death of resident cat already. Right now, I’ve got the resident cat set up with her own little apartment (we have a house with a large porch area) while new cat is exploring the house. She’s lonely and meowing, but it’s the only I can think of doing to keep the peace and give them equal house space. Do you think these two could ever get along, or am I destined to live in a separated-cat household until resident cat kicks it?
