My cat got out and seems to not want me to catch her. Help?

My cats chill on the balcony with me from time to time. I had a close eye on them but one of them got spooked and jumped off the balcony and then ran and hid. She got out somewhat recently as well, and was lost for 5 days, so she may know the area at this point.

I found her about 10min later hiding in a bush. I tried go calmly call for her, but she ended up running away. She initially meowed at me and definitely recognized me.

The next day, I saw her again in that same bush. She once again recognized me and meowed for a bit before escaping again. She is fast and agile.

Next day, I saw her again when I got home. She was in a different bush this time, a little bit further away. Again, she ran away. I followed her for a bit but she ran under a car and disappeared and I decided to stop to keep from pushing her further from home.

I’m certain she recognizes me each time. Does she not want to come home? Is she just too scared to let me get to her? Not sure what to do. She hasn’t gone far and when she was lost before she was very close by when I found her. I’m worried I will scare her into running too far and becoming lost.

Getting a lizard soon

I want one that is small (10-20 gal), friendly, cuddly, and of course, awesome (not that any reptiles aren't). I'd like one with a life span at least 5-10 years and low maintenance would be nice. I'm thinking about a gecko, but there's still so many different types. I've never owned any reptiles other than a turtle, so I have no clue where to start. Any advice?

Do you all think that fish can take up the spot as an "emotional support pet?"

I am essentially asking if I can compare them to dogs or cats. Since I am allergic to them (kinda) my best next option is fish. So I am wondering do you think that it's ok to just have fish and just- talk to them like a therapist... or am I just too far gone lol.

Joker the dog!

My very kind neighbor who mows our lawn has an older dog named joker. He’s a super sweet and cute dog, he’s black lab and he’s got this potato shaped body. He’s super obedient and chill and super attached to my neighbor so he can mow our lawn and joker just stays right at his side without a leash, he doesn’t even chase after my cat! Joker is an awesome dog so I thought i’d share :) (sorry I don’t have a picture of him)

[Discussion] am I obligated to pay for my moms dogs arthritis medication?

So, my mom has an old dog. He was diagnosed with minor arthritis a couple years ago, so the vet gave my mom some anti inflammatories to give him when hes in pain. That doesn't happen unless he goes on walks. My mom rarely takes him on walks. I felt bad for him so, I take him on walks everyday, down the street. I had read that walking a different on pavement can make arthritis worse, but its difficult not to walk on the pavement around our hosue, and I figured walking on pavement is better then not taking him in walks at all. Lately hes been limping around the house. My mom took him to the vet, and the vet said hes got some severe arthritis in left paw. It will require daily medication. My mom looked at me, and said I should pay for the meds because I walked the dog on payment everyday. WIBTA if I didnt oayz seeing as it might be my fault his arthritis got worse? Do you think it would have gotten this bad regardless of weather o walked him on the pavement.

How to get puppy (6m) to go potty faster outside?

It’s the most annoying thing my little guy does. He’s on schedule and does use the bathroom outside but takes years each time. He stops and looks at everything, even if it’s a leaf flying by it throws him off. It’s so annoying!! He knows what potty means but still takes almost 20 mins each time 🙄 anyone had this problem before?

HELP!!! I'm stuck with a newborn sparrow

Alright, So my girlfriend accidentally knocked a birds nest down at work with a forklift. Then one of her coworkers swept them up and threw them away. Very sad. But one egg was left over and it wasnt cracked or anything so my girlfriend brought it home and we put it on a heating pad over night to see what happened. To our surprise we woke up to a tiny newborn sparrow! We didn't know what to do. we called wildlife rehab centers with no answers and I went to pet stores and bought it some hand feeding formula and some mealworms.

So far it's still alive. I managed to squeeze some hand feeding formula into its mouth and we have it in a shoebox with a pillowcase over a heating pad. The problem is that it's very lethargic and seems to be asleep most of the time. It's very hard feeding it because it's so small and I have to help it sit up to put some food into its mouth. I'm not even sure if its eating all of the food. I saw a lump in its neck that went to its stomach a few times but thats about it. And i read that they have to eat every 15-20 minutes. Also the formula crusts and it's hard to get off the little birds mouth, I try to wipe it up but its soo small. I'm afraid the formula will crust over its nose or mouth and it wont be able to breath.

Is this normal for baby birds? Is there anything else I can do? I'm honestly doubting for this thing to be alive when I wake up tomorrow but I sure hope the little guy makes it. A wildlife rehab center called back and left a message saying we can bring it there tomorrow morning. But I read that they will most likely euthanize it and that's just sad. If worst comes to worst I'm not opposed to having a pet bird. I read that they imprint on their care taker and I wont be able to release it into the wild. Downside is I think this is illegal and I'd have to get a permit to keep it. But sadly, I'm doubting it'll live until tomorrow anyway.

I doubt anyone here has experience in baby sparrows but I'm having a hard time finding any info so I figured I'd try reddit. Basically just asking for any advice at all because I'm completely in the dark right now.

Kitten won’t use litter box outside of bedroom

Hello,

Need help. Got 2 kittens (siblings)at 8 weeks old last weekend. We kept them in one bedroom for about a week to get them comfortable, then slowly introduced them to rest of the house for an hour or so at a time. One cat uses litter box all the time. He goes out of his way to find one (2 on each floor outside their bedroom, 3 floors). The other one tries to run away from us and then finds a corner even though he can see the litter box and still does his business away from the box. He’s done this 3 times and now we can’t let him out unsupervised. We’ve tried mild scolding, hasn’t worked. We’re using the same litter he uses in his bedroom and still, he won’t go in the box. Is this a developmental thing and will take time? Or are we doing something wrong? Thanks

Blocked cat

I’m gonna apologize for the length of this in advance, it’s just a lot of stuff. I’m hoping somebody has had a similar experience and can help guide me a bit.

My 6 year old orange tabby blocked for the second time the other day. I rushed him to the emergency vet, the took him in and confirmed the block. They got a catheter in to drain his bladder, but what they didn’t find were any stones or crystals. From what I understand, his blocking was due to inflammation. I suppose that is probably the best news, all things considered, to get when your cat is blocked.

The first time he blocked (roughly 16 months ago), they discovered sediment in his bladder along with a kidney stone. While giving him an X-ray, they discovered he also had a diaphragmatic hernia. He was the runt of his litter, and we believe he was born with this. They informed my wife and I that they could not operate on his kidney stone unless the hernia was fixed, but we decided that the hernia surgery was way too risky and traumatic for our little guy to go through, so we opted to try changing his diet to dissolve the stone. It worked. After he came home, he recovered and within a couple weeks his stone was gone and he was back to normal.

Back to the other day.

He had been in the emergency vet for about 36 hours. We got a call at about 4am, and the doctor said that he had re-blocked. He suggested the possibility of a surgery that would remove his penis to create better urine flow. We were heartbroken. It’s a tough decision to decide between your cats life and putting him through a potentially traumatic surgery. Well, fast forward a few hours, the doctor called and informed us that he had peed. I can not describe the level of happiness achieved at that moment in time. I was able to go pick him up that afternoon and bring him home. I’m so worried about him re-blocking.

I did some digging for answers or solutions to this issue. One that stood out was about litter box cleanliness. I will be the first to tell you, we are guilty of not religiously cleaning our litter boxes (we have 2 cats). They’re not always dirty, we clean them, but with work and all of the things in life cleaning boxes twice a week is probably the norm. I feel embarrassed to admit this, but this is all a learning lesson. We haven’t had issues for almost a year and a half, so it was just business as usual. What I read claimed that not cleaning boxes religiously for some cats creates stress for them that may cause them to hold their urine. Which can cause a mess of problems. I’m wondering if this could be the issue considering they found no stones or crystals, only inflammation. Does anybody have experience with this?

Our little guy is also on Prozac for anxiety. I know anxiety can be a cause for blocking, but he just seems like the most chill guy ever. The doctor even told us how cool of a cat he was because he just gave head butts and purrs to everybody during his visit. We have him on a high moisture diet, no dry food.

tl/dr my cat blocked for the second time in 16 months and they didn’t find stones or crystals. Trying to find information to prevent this from happening again.

My first cat on the second day of having her

Last night my friends drove over because he had cats he didn't want so I took one, they didn't name her so I named her Kana, she's only 6 months old.

Last night she was hiding in the bathroom, I checked on her a few times before going to bed, this morning she kept meowing until I started petting her, I noticed when she meows constantly she wants to be picked up she won't show her claws or even hiss.

She started marking me and even licked me on the second day!!! I really love my cat, I know it was love at first sight!!!

My dog freaks out every night and I don’t know what to do.

Every time I go to sleep I put my dog in his crate. After 30-60 minutes he starts barking and scratching hung his crate. Today he had moved the crate a considerable amount by scratching it. There was also a pool of spit on the ground from him barking so much. Any advice on what I should do?

If this helps, we used to have another dog until October. Their crates were right next to each other and we NEVER had a single problem like this. He started doing this when she passed away.

Lost my kitten a week ago, now I’m paranoid about my recent adopted kitten’s bathroom cries. Need advice.

I adopted a orange tabby kitten who is 6 weeks. I was told he wasn’t nursing anymore and on dry food, but it took some convincing with a tiny drizzle of gravy on his dry food to get him to begin eating.

I noticed he’s been crying and straining to defecate, and his poop is quite big when he does go.

He drinks often enough and eats, but I’m starting to think that because he’s on dry food, maybe he’s not getting an adequate amount of water which is resulting in constipation and a build up of waste that is too large for him to pass without painfully straining.

Some people are telling me to bring him to the vet, while others are saying that it’s probably normal because he ‘just got off the nipple.’ This is been going on for four days now. He refuses to touch wet food no matter what I do to it.

I’m not sure if I’m being paranoid. My last kitten passed from renal failure and that devastated me. I’m far from over it and every little sneeze has me wanting to rush him to the emergency vet.

Please, any advice about what to do would be appreciated. I’ve considered a water fountain, but I have a feeling that wouldn’t help.

Nice ol' husky has been replaced with Gremlin

🐚 NEED ADVICE 🐚

I'm sorry if this is super long and rambled, but I want to give as much info and context as I can! I'm also on mobile, so I'm sorry if the lay out is a mess.

I have an 8 year old Siberian husky named Myah, who has never been aggressive in nature. But she is also a rescue pupper and a bit of a madam with the 'tude .. Not too long ago (roughly 3months ago, nearly 4) I had 2 friends move in 1 month apart and they each brought a dog with them, a less than 1 year old kelpie X & a 2 year old mini border collie. My husky didnt have much of an issue, the kelpie did get in her face a bit as she's super affectionate and young, but Myah would put her in her place and set her boundaries and I would stop those two bothering Myah because whilst they have to sort out the alpha, sometimes they wouldn't get the picture and I wanted Myah to still feel safe and have her space. The did sort it our quick and we seemed to be good to go. I've never had any issues giving her treats or food like pigs ears or bones, I could stroke her face when she's eating and she's never had an issue. Until the last week or 2... I gave her a pigs ear and I can usually fluff her up and give it to get and she's chirpy, Ive even been able to give her a good-girl pat when she's eating them in the past. But I gave her one last week (all 3 dogs had one, so no jealousy issues) and then when I went to check on her a few minutes later, she dropped down and started aggressively growling at me when I walked too close. I was like "ok"... Then yesterday, we got all 3 of them a marrow bone each and there seemed to be no issue. I went out a few moments later to check on her and again, she started growling at me and I'm like of what is your deal girlfriend!? Cut to later that night, she's taken literally all 3 bones, buried them (shed never done that before) gone after the mini BC when she came to pee on the grass, then growled at me and went to bite me when I walked over and then afyer i went to take the bones off her. Even tonight when I walked out with the food bowls to feed them, she went at the mini BC AGAIN,when the bowls weren't even put down yet..

Can anyone tell me what's happening? I had 2 rescue huskies for a while and did not have these issues (including Myah) so I'm unsure why she's suddenly starting this now... Any help would be so appreciated, I have a 4 year old daughter too and Myahs behavior is starting to stress me. (I've explained to my daughter never to touch the dogs while they're eating in case of any issues) ðŸŒŧðŸŒŧðŸŒŧðŸŒŧðŸŒŧ

I think my cat is too small

My kitty was neglected by my aunt and uncle so I took her in. She was around 4 mos at the time. I’ve been feeding her wet and dry food and she’s up to date on all her shots. She’s so precious and perfect, however she’s really small.

I don’t know if she’s the runt of the litter, but she’s 9 mos now and barely weights 5 pounds (4.73 the last time she went). Each time she goes to the Vet they say she’s perfectly healthy and normal, but even they were surprised when I tell them her age. I read up on it and it says that she’s supposed to be the same weight as her age but she’s not. She’s been around other cats and they’re literally 3-4x her weight. Everyone I know loves that she’s so small, but I don’t know if this is a cause for concern.

She’s my first companion besides some goldfish I had when I was a child, so I’m new to being a pet parent. Should I be concerned although the vets keep reassuring me she’s fine? Is this normal? Will she ever grow? Am I overreacting?

How to stop a dog from barking at people?

Hey everyone, I've had a dog for about 2 years now. She's a really small dog but she likes to bark at strangers who're just minding their own business, she even barks to my neighbors. She doesn't bark to threaten people though, if they get close she backs up as if she's scared. She only bites if she's really provoked or if I'm in danger (i.e someone punches or kicks me). This is really problematic since I have to lock her in the bedroom/bathroom for her to stop barking at people that come over to my house (the cable guy, my friends, or even my cousins that she doesn't know). She also would try to bite my friends if they accidentally bumped into me, or jokingly punched me. Does anyone know how to stop her from barking? Thanks in advance

Jealous Cat

I need help. I have a cat named Bandit who's been the only animal (other than my dog, but they're best buddies) for her whole life.

As of today, I found a stray kitten, about eight weeks or so, and decided to keep her. I introduced them, and at first it went kinda fine. Bandit acted scared, having not been around a small kitten after her brothers were adopted out.

I let them meet again earlier in the day, and Bandit went nuts. When she saw her, she started to bat at her, (claws out) hiss, and growl.

They're in the same room, but Bandit is being protective of her cat tree, and randomly goes to said sleeping kitten and hisses, batting at her.

Bandit glares at me from across the room, and she is acting pretty jealous. I don't want her to feel like she's being replaced, but her being kinda distant now is really upsetting to see.

Kitten (Who I am probably going to call Neko) is very friendly. Trying to make friends with Bandit. They're both females.

Any advice on how to ease them into each other? Stop the jealousy?

Looking for my cat.

Forgive me if this comes off as weird, because I've never used reddit before. I only made this account so I could hopefully get some advice about my situation. A few months back, my family and I moved out of our house. We have a cat, however unfortunately, we couldn't take him with us at the time. Now we are living all separated, my dad is somewhere else while I'm living with my mom and younger sibling. We've missed our cat immensely but we just haven't had the space and time to get him. Now, as of recently, we've been trying to get him back. One of our old neighbors posted a pic of him on FB and my mom contacted her, but the chick ignored her. My mom asked a few more people in the neighborhood, which have all ignored her. To make matters worse, the new owner of our house threw out all of our cat's belongings (food bowl, litter box, etc.) and they won't help us find him either. Absolute assholes. Plus, since there were plenty of cat people in our old neighborhood, there's always a possibility that somebody took him for themselves. They could all be hiding something, and that's why they won't respond to us. I'm honestly in a bind because this cat was really expensive, plus we traveled to a completely different state just to pick him up from a breeder. This cat played a big part in keeping my mental state at bay when it was spiralled out of wack. I miss him more and more day by day. If there is anything, any advice that anyone can offer, I will take it. Please.

Brand new cat foster, behavior I don't understand [x-posted to r/catcare]

Hi everybody,

As my title states, I'm a brand new cat foster. As in, the cat just came home a few hours ago. And I've never had a cat before.

I followed the shelter's instructions and instructions that I read online that said to designate a specific area of the house for her and keep her there alone to decompress. No problem, we have a rescue dog and did the same thing a few years ago when we first got her. The shelter said this cat would need some time to acclimate and warm up -- again, no problem at all, I've had rescue animals in the past and I totally get giving them all the time they need.

Well. It seems like she can't handle being alone. As in, she hasn't stopped crying and yowling and only seems to chill out when my husband and I are in the room with her. Which is awesome! She's super affectionate with us despite us just meeting literally five hours ago.

So I'm wondering.... do we still need to stick to the recommended two to three days of isolation? Or can (should?) we let her out to explore the house and meet the dog sooner? I don't want to mess this up or traumatize her or anything like that, but my experience so far has been that she's happier with us around.

I don't want a third dog

My parents seem excited about the idea of getting a third whippet but I'm not and I'm not sure why. I'm guessing it could be: - Ive always owned two dogs at a time - I now gave to walk 3 unsociable dogs instead of 2 - Grief of dogs dying Are these reasons valid or is there any other reason I might not want to make this lifestyle change?

Scared cat

I brought home a used bicycle and my cat is scared of it. She hid when I wheeled it in and when I brought her into the same room as it she was scared and tried to run. I put her in the other room with the door open but it's a pretty small apartment. I covered it with a blanket but that doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Any advice for what I can do to help my cat not be so scared of it? We live in an apartment, so if she won't go in the living room she doesn't have much space. I want her back to her normal self as soon as possible.

My cat won’t use his litter box at night?

At night my family usually keeps my cat in a room because we don’t like him scratching at our doors at night, and the room has all the necessary stuff for him (litter box, water, food). He uses the litter box just fine during the day, but in the morning we always find that he has pooped and/or peed on the sofa in the room. Any reason for this?

I adopted a 10wk kitten and my 3yo resident cat hates me

I adopted a kitten (10wks) and my resident cat (3yr) hates me

I recently adopted a 10 week old male kitten, Kylo. I’ve had my current cat, Oliver, for three years. I’ve had Kylo for 4 days now and anytime I go near Oliver he hisses at me and will sometimes swat at me. Prior to getting Kylo, Oliver has never been aggressive towards me or my family. I know it can take a few weeks to a month for the transition period to complete but I honestly miss Oliver. I can’t help but feel like he hates me and wants nothing to do with me now that I’ve adopted Kylo. I’m seeking advice from anyone who might know what I can do to make Oliver more comfortable and if/when this phase will pass and he will soon be less aggressive towards me and return to his old personality of being a lovebug.

How Can I Stop Caring About the Family Dog

Hi. I am 17. My family adopted a dog when I was in ninth grade and I love him. He is so cute and small. However, I always get anxiety and am stressed about his wellbeing because I personally don't feel they take care of him well. They just feed him random stuff without looking up if the food is safe for him, they don't make sure there isn't random stuff on the floor for him to eat, etc. They just want him to say they have one I feel like personally. I am most disturbed by the fact that when my dad is upset with the dog and the dog won't listen or something, he hurts the dog in some way. When my dad takes the dog on walks, he yanks the collar and chokes him with the leash because the dog is so small that he isn't all enough to not hang in the air. My little brother recorded the incident. I can't take the stress of not knowing if the dog is okay and I am about to move out hopefully after senior year.

How can I begin the process to stop caring about the dog, I really cant take the mental stress it is causing me and no one in my family cares about the dog enough to stand up to my dad. I don't want to have anxiety each time my dad or someone else takes him for a walk. I don't want to have anxiety when my family just gives the dog anything to eat. I'm tired of caring and I need relief. I am already going through enough.

I’m not sure if my kitten likes to play or not

So a few weeks ago we decided it would be a good idea to get a boy kitten that was a few weeks old for our 5 month old cat. After a while they’ve gotten used to each other, and now the kitten loves to play. However whenever the kitten plays it seems to “growl” at the cat whenever they are clinging onto each other. But after i try to push them away, he either goes under some couch, or he goes right up to the cat and start biting his tail again. Should i keep them separated? Or should i just let the kitten “growl” at the cat while they are playing?

My dog keeps popping in the house!

Hi, we got a 6 year old English bulldog from their previous owner. He told us she was trained which she is, she whines when she needs to go outside. We’ve been with her everyday until a couple of weeks ago when we went on vacation and the Airbnb didn’t allow pets, since we’ve been back she’s been peeing and pooping in the house. We take her out and hour or two after she eats and before we all go to bed and she doesn’t go. She just stands there, but will go in the middle of the night. She sleep all day (20 hours), it happens when we leave for even 30 mins to the market. She’ll be sleeping and when we come home there’s poop! I’m not sure what to do, I think it could be separation anxiety or she can’t control her bowels but when we put her in a crate she’s fine.

Adopted a cat, need advice!

Hi everyone,

I love cats and decided to adopt one as my first pet, but I’m feeling a little anxious. I adopted her a couple days ago and I’m trying to get her on a feeding schedule. I got the same food they would’ve been giving her at the shelter. I’ve been trying to take away the wet food after an hour so she learns the feeding schedule but leave out a little dry food all the time. Any advice for getting her to adjust to full meals on a feeding schedule?

The other issue is that she is very shy. The first night she hid under the bed all day and then explored and kept me up all night. The next day she hid under the bed all day but was friendly with me in the evening. Today she got into my closet and has been hiding deep inside it all day. She just crept out to eat, though I’m not sure if I should take the food away when she’s done or leave leftovers over night.

What are your views on my future pet situation? 🐭ðŸđ

I have a dog, who is very loyal and mostly well behaved, but I’ve been considering expanding out to get another pet. Since I have my dog, I’m not looking for another pet that will have an extremely long lifespan. Just a pet that I can give a long and happy life for the time they spend on earth. This got me thinking about rodents. As a younger kid I had hamsters and mice who I gave the best lives possible for the money I had. I now I have a job with great pay and can spend money when needed on another pet. I’m not committed to another pet yet, but this is all just consideration for the future. Here are some things about my lifestyle that will hopefully make it easy for you to possibly help me with my decision making. I’m home every day for most of the day before going to work either an afternoon or later night shift. I have a good amount of money on me at all times and saved up when I get paid. I’m looking for a pet with lower needs but not as low as a typical goldfish. I have time to spend with pets. Everyone in my household currently knows how to handle and care for small pets. What do you think would be a good pet to be able to hold and bond with but not always need constant social interaction? If you think I don’t have the right list of needs for another pet right now, don’t be afraid to let me know 😄 I’m open to anything, even pets other than the rodents I first considered. Thank you for reading.

Question about dog artificial insemination breeding

Trying to find my next 4 legged buddy but can’t find the breed I want close enough and affordable enough. For these people with breeds that are naturally impossible, does a vet do this? Is it separate people that are specialist for this? Anyone have a estimate on what it costs. Does it have a high chance of success? Of course this will range a lot, but just in the first stage of thinking.

Are blind dogs conscious of said state?

Hi all,

My 5yo pug just lost sight on both of her eyes due to some injuries suffered while playing with her big “sister”. It makes me really sad to see her as she currently is and I don’t want her to suffer. While I hope we find a way for her to maintain a healthy and happy life, I don’t know if I’m overly humanizing her experience. Do you think she is capable of being conscious of her own blindness?

New rug chemical smell and cats. Question.

So, I just bought two new rugs and they smell strongly of chemical. I guess it is called 'off-gassing' and contains chemicals called VOCs which can contain formaldehyde? These rugs were very expensive so throwing them out isn't an option and I live in an apartment so I can't just leave them out to air out. I'm concerned about the health of my two cats though. Is this off-gassing a health risk for my cats? If so, any ideas of what I can do to get the rugs cat-ready?

Is it normal for a short hair cat to shed more than a medium hair?

I have two kittens that are about 10 months old. They're both rescues so I don't know exact breeds or anything, and they're believed to be litter mates with different dads. One is a short hair, typical looking tabby and the other is a gray (I think) medium hair. He's not quite what I would call a long haired cat but he is definitely fluffy and has a bottle brush tail and hair tufts on his ears and paws.

I've noticed when brushing them that I get a lot more fur from the short hair cat than the medium hair one. His fur also feels more fine and soft than the short hair. Is that weird? I'm wondering if the medium hair still has his "baby" coat and if his fur will get longer or if he just doesn't shed much.

I need help deciding what pet is right for me

Hi, I’m looking into adopting a pet. But I haven’t laid out the possibilities yet. I am willing to spend 500 USD on everything the pet needs for upfront costs including the animal. After that 1000 dollars a year works. I am looking for a companion to take care of and something I can handle. I am willing to do up to 3 hours of care. I can not have a dog or cat due to dorm rules about them. Does anyone have a good recommendation?

Did I do the right thing rehoming my dog?

I adopted a mix puppy from the shelter in November to be our family dog. I have been a stay at home mom for 5 years and had plenty of time to spend with him until my husband would come home and play with him. He ended up being a big boy. His vet thinks he is pit bull/border collie, about 65 pounds and very tall!

We decided to get a second dog also to complete our family. Eventually it became clear my husband was unhappy. We finally decided mutually to get a divorce. Little did I know he was spending thousands and thousands of dollars and lying to me for the past 10 months. He started becoming verbally abuse so I removed myself, children and dogs from the home.

We have been staying with my parents for the time being. The dog has always been extremely active and needing a lot of play time. I have been struggling trying to care for two kids, two dogs and trying to work a little to make sure we are taken care of. I ultimately decided to rehome the dog.

My husband wanted to keep him but he works 9+ hours a day and I thought that would be extremely unfair for the dog to be stuck inside all day by himself. My sister’s boyfriends friend had been looking for a dog for some time and came over to meet him today. I swear the second my dog saw him it was like he was always meant to be with him. He basically didn’t even acknowledge me after that. I let him take him.

I’m sad because he is the first dog I have ever had as an adult. I just felt like I wasn’t giving him the life he deserved. Did I make the right choice?

URGENT!! Cats won’t stop fighting!

We took two of our male cats to get neutered at the same time (we know now that you’re not supposed to do that, the vet failed to tell us that at the time), our cats now won’t stop fighting! They used to get along just fine, we got them around the same time as each other and we would put them in our “cat room” at night together for over a year and they were perfectly fine together. They were fixed ten days ago and at first they seemed fine and then within 24 hours our youngest cat started going after our other cat and it got very vicious very fast. We have tried everything from keeping them separated and doing a slow reintroduction to scent transfers to calming collars and sprays! NOTHING WORKS!! This last fight was just about an hour ago and was the worst one by far, we thought our youngest cat was calmer after putting the calming collar on him two days ago so we let them back in the same room together and we were keeping a close on on them and everything seemed fine then our youngest cat went after our other cat and chased him around the house while they were both screaming and growling and hissing at each other, the fight ended with our youngest cat getting his paw bandaged and the other falling off a shelf before I could pull them apart. Thankfully both of them are alright. This is not play fighting! I’ve seen them and my other cats play fight and that is not what this is! They are currently being separated again and I don’t want to let them near each other again until I figure out what is happening and what I else I can try to fix it. Please let me know if you’ve had a problem like this or if you know what else I could do to fix this problem. Thank you all in advance.

I fell in love/got attached with one of my foster kittens. She got adopted and leaves in 2 days. Help me cope?

So I've volunteered at a cat shelter for the past 7+ months so I am used to new cats/kittens coming and going. But due to quarantine (this post is made in the middle of Corona/Covid-19), I decided to foster a couple of kittens due to the fact I can't volunteer during this time. I have had this adorable 8 week old kitten with me the past week. She started off REALLY scared but grew fond of me within a few days. I've been having to give her eye medicine twice a day and making sure she grows to not be scared of humans. We have become really bonded and I am really starting to love her. I got a message a couple days ago saying she got adopted, she had to get fixed today but they told me I'd have her for 7-10 more days after her surgery while she recovers, plus the same day of her surgery they gave me her brother to foster as well so theyd be fostered together (he did not get adopted).

Well, that all changed today. I was informed that she is now going to her new home in 2 days and once I was alone, like a gut reaction i started crying. I know the home she is going to is a really good home and they will treat her really well. But even right now hearing her little purr as i enter the room and her having the zoomies around me at 2 am is killing me. I just got her brother today so maybe after a few days of me with him I won't feel so sad about losing her, plus they're giving me another foster kitty same day the first one leaves for her forever home. I don't want to be sad over the fact this kitten in particular got adopted and I'm not sure why I'm so attached to her mentally.

Any advice would be nice to help me let go mentally of her. Thank you!

Coming to the realisation I can’t commit to a pup is really hard:(

I love dogs they’re my favourite companion. I love spending time with them and well they help my depression a lot.

Recently me and my family talked and my parents work full time. Up at 5 am at work by 7:30/8 and and home around 6-8 pm too. And they don’t even live near home. And I also work similar hours to them.

Today we discussed it and realised no one can commit, no one can take care of a pup the way it needs to be cared for and it’s really sad because I do love them but I don’t want to mistreat one. It would break my heart

My parents also had a cat 19 years ago and are still heartbroken from it’s death

Are there any ways I can do volunteer dog walking or borrowing in the U.K. where it’s low commitment

Why did my cat get embarrassed?

I’m currently staying at my grandma’s for a few weeks and I’ve been spending most of my time with my cat who currently lives with her! I’ve had her since I was a kid but she’s very vocal and won’t be good for the apartment I live in now. Anyways, her and I nap together often and earlier today she was resting her head on my shoulder and my grandma walked in to give me food and my grandma was in such awe and left to get her phone to take a picture of us, but my cat immediately got up and sat on the corner of the bed and wouldn’t look at either of us lol. Do you guys think she got embarrassed? Once my grandma gave up and closed the door my cat went back to laying on my lap. It was really cute. My cat is really affectionate so I don’t know why she would’ve felt embarrassed, she’s sweet and gentle to everybody! She shouldn’t get embarrassed for being cute and cuddly ;( She also just meowed outside the bathroom and when I left to go back to the guest room she immediately followed me, and now she’s asleep on my lap.

I am getting a new kitten

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on cute names, toys to make/buy, effective flea treatments, food, introducing to my other two cats and dog or litter training. Anything really, I have never owned a kitten although I do have two cats. It will have to be isolated for the first couple of weeks before we get it vaccinated at 10 weeks and then we will start introducing it to the house. I have read alot online about it but was just wondering if anyone had any advice from personal experience or even just cute name ideas. So far I am thinking Maple, Willow, Apollo or sesame but we don't know the gender yet. I really want to give this cat an amazing life as it will be the first pet that is properly mine and not just my dads (except a few stick insects 5 years ago when I was 8) Thank you.

Cat and dog fighting

I used to have three pets (two shih-tzu dogs and a cat). My oldest one died a few months ago and ever since then, my remaining dog and my cat tend to fight a lot. Usually, it’s more like a play fight so I let it go, but sometimes they’ll make each other cry and it’s starting to worry me a little. I’m posting because it just happened again and I don’t know if there is something I should do to make them stop or if it’s normal? I really don’t want either of them to end up being hurt.

How to Teach a Puppy to Leash

Nothing worse than a puppy that always pulls on the leash! It is very tiring for both of you and it can turn a simple walk into a nightmare.

If your dog exerts strong pressure on the leash or your puppy refuses to walk without pulling with all his might, this means that you only control him physically, whereas education should allow him to trot happily alongside you. Also, when your puppy grows, you may no longer be able to control it, especially if it belongs to a large and powerful breed. All you need to make your life and that of your dog easier is a little training. Your dog will be happy when he sees the leash! Read on to learn how to teach a puppy to walk on a leash ...

How to shift an outdoor living cat?

We live in a rented house and adopted our cat almost a 2 years ago, a month old kitten. We kept it inside our house for about two months then got a special cage made for it outside because

1) my mother is terrified of cats, but she allowed my brother to adopt one. 2) he is a very active guy, he was suffocating inside.

Oh and we only left the cat outside in his house at night, in the morning i took him back to my room.

Anyway, soon enough we allowed it to roam outside and realized he won't be leaving, he considered our and the four houses around including the people living there his home. We sold the cage and now he has been a free spirit for almost 1.5 years, but he stays and is a happy kitty

The problem is that we are shifting in two days and I'm worried sick how the little dude is going to settle outdoors over there because once we left our brother and the cat at our cousins and he was constantly running around the entire neighborhood, panicking and screaming.

I know that one of the options is to keep the dude indoors at the new place for a while, but he's half wild now and my mother won't be comfortable. Any suggestions on what could be done?

I (19F) want to adopt a cat, what age would you suggest?

Hello! I've had cats since I was 10, and the 1st cat gave birth when she was just 6 months, cause my mom didn't know they could get pregnant so early. We kept one of the kittens.

I've only had kittens and this would be the first cat to be just mine, in my own apartment. I have been going back and forth as to whether I should get a kitten or young cat. My 2 cats had (unfortunately we had to move to an apartment, so they couldn't come with us) very very different personalities, one was very shy but still very sweet, the other was a big goofy, lazy, attention seeking guy.

Now I love all cats, but I would definitely prefer a cat that's more cuddly and wants to just hang out. Of course I'd still play with them and would activate them and take good care of a cat with any type of personality, but I'd really like a cat that wants to sit in my lap and cuddle and such.

I've heard that cats reach mental maturity once they're 2 years old, and that's when you can be certain of their personality. I've fallen absolutely in love with a guy that's 10 months old and I was wondering if he's likely to keep his personality of being a cuddly, attentionseeking, lazy guy, or if it's like a 50/50 chance he might end up very different.

No matter what age, I'm going to adopt from a shelter, (there are no shelters here that kill the cats that won't get adopted, and there are so many kittens that need adoption, plus a lot of older cats get adopted here) I just need to know what people would suggest.

Should I get a 2+ year old, should I get the 10 month old cat or should I go for a kitten? I want what's best for the cat in any scenario and I'll still love them, no matter how they turn out!

Survey for people with pets

Hi,

I have a quick survey (less than five minutes) that is about people with pets. I am doing some research about pets that I think is very relevant right now among the COVID-19 pandemic. It is for a psychology class and the subject is explained at the end of the survey. If you have any pets, I would love to hear your opinions on the subject! (the questions are designed so that you won't be aware of the subject until the end) It is an anonymous, quick and easy survey to complete. I would really appreciate your help!

My senior rescue pup is 10 (we think!). She’s 20 lbs - corgi mix. We’ve had for almost a year now and love her dearly. From day one, she’s refused to eat dry kibble and we’ve had to spend a little more money that we would like on buying her wet food. My roommate recently got a kitten and as of literally yesterday, my dog somehow smelt the kitten’s dry food and has LOVED it, and I mean LOVE. My dog has NEVER ate dry food before - not even dry treats! She is so spoiled!

I read somewhere that sometimes dogs like cat food because it is higher in meat content than dog food is — this would totally make sense, my dog loves meat as treats. She gets chickfila grilled nuggets once a month as a special treat and just goes crazy for that ðŸĪŠ

Anyways, I’m obviously not going to feed my dog cat kibble as her main source of nutrition. I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced a similar problem of a super spoiled dog who refuses to eat dry food? Unless it’s cat food of course 🙄😂 Would love to see if anyone has some suggestions on dry kibble that has a high meat content but is still healthy? Right now we have gotten her to eat Hill’s Science Diet mixed with chicken toppers - a HUGE step up from the nasty, expensive wet canned food that she used to eat, but it would be great to totally get her on kibble now that I know she can handle the texture and just prefers the meatier stuff!

2 kittens found, suggestions?

We found two kittens in the backyard, we just retrieved them a few minutes ago.

They have been meowing all morning which we first thought was normal since our neighborhood do have roaming cats. Then tonight close to midnight, we still hear meowing and it sounds to be near our backyard. We found them in a very deep bush, stuck under a pile of twigs. There was no sign of their mother and they've been at it all day so we took them in. Put some milk on a plate as we weren't sure what else to do.

We plan to bring them to an animal shelter or some-sort tomorrow morning, we've been looking things up. What suggestions do you guys have? Unfortunately we can't just keep them and we don't know how old they are, probably 1-2 weeks? They can barely walk so we've read they need the mother or some specific milk, warmth, etc.

Would an animal shelter be best to give them to? We have a Humane Society nearby as well as a Vet. Some say that some don't even take them in?

Pic in comments.

Thinking about rehoming my kitten and I feel so guilty.

This is a rant more than anything.

I recently moved out on my own and wanted a kitten to keep my older cat company. So I ended up adopting a 7 week old kitten. He’s adorable, sweet, friendly, and playful. I’m attached and I love him.

The problem is, my adult cat is so stressed out. He’s been hiding, won’t let me pet him, runs from everyone, puking, and using the bathroom outside of the litter box. He’s usually the most loving and affectionate cat who wants to sit right next to me/on my chest constantly. I can’t stand to see my cat I’ve had for 6 years and love dearly this upset.

I don’t want to get rid of the kitten, but I also don’t want to wait too long and get even more attached to the kitten. He’s also at a very adoptable age right now, so I’d have an easier time rehoming him now versus him being older.

Is waiting it out even an option? I know some cats need to be the only pet in the household. I just feel so guilty to even consider rehoming the kitten since I made the commitment to take care of him for the rest of his life. I feel like a terrible person.

Lost Parrot!

Hi all, I don't know if any of you lives in philly, PA, but it's worth a try

I've recently lost my parrot on monday and every night that goes by, my heart shatters into pieces.

Cat owners who’ve dealt with UTIs

Hello, my male cat (1yo) has been having urinary issues as of late. He’s at the vet now, but I can’t help but feel distraught and anxious about him. I know that UTIs are easily treatable, but they can be life threatening if it’s prolonged. My question is how long is it until a UTI gets very serious?

This started about a week ago when I noticed him peeing outside his litter box and onto the bathroom floor. At the time, I was unaware of a UTI being the cause, and instead thought my cat was telling me to clean his litter box more frequently. I’ve been doing so daily now, but that did not stop his urine problems.

A few more days passed and he still continued to pee on the bathroom floor. I scheduled an appointment with my vet and they told me to call if the problem worsened, and they’d take him in sooner. As of this morning, I walk into the bathroom and find a spot of blood. I call my vet immediately and notify them, and they take him in.

As I’m just about to leave to bring him to the vet, he urinates on the floor again right in front of me. Was very bloody and cloudy with hints of yellow. I rushed him to the vet and they tried collecting a urine sample but were unable to since he peed right before we left. I decided to board him overnight and they’re supposed to give me a call tomorrow to discuss his diagnosis and treatment options.

Since then, I’ve been scaring the shit out of myself by reading about the complications that are UTIs in male cats. I’m afraid I’ve waited too long and his condition may be fatal. So again I ask, how long does it take a UTI to persist until it becoming extremely serious?

Why does my moms cat make these sounds when she sees me?

Everytime I approach her or when she just sees me I'm general, she makes this like surprised meow sound, but with her mouth closed. It almost sounds like a really quick strong pur. Sometimes shell sit in one spot, and do it a few times, or shell do it, and start running around.

Can cats have water before anesthesia?

I’m a little confused. The vet sent me pre-anesthesia instructions that state no food or water after 10 p.m. Then they called today and said no food after midnight but I can leave out water? Did I hear that right? Don’t want my cat to die because I misunderstood something.

My cat runs away when I give her food

a few weeks back my cat was acting very unusual . She is usually a very friendly and social cat but she started to be very inactive all of the sudden. she stayed in this condition for a while so we took her to the vet and they said nothing is really wrong with her. now that shes back she is spending all her time in our addict which can go up to 100 Fahrenheit. she has started to come down more frequently (mainly during the night) but hardly eats or drinks and when I bring food directly to her she smells it and runs away, sometimes hissing. I'm thinking that she got traumatized by the vet visit but whats with her not eating anything, not even regular chicken or treats. any advice would be appreciated.

My Dad won't take our dog back to the vet

I'm 17, and I live alone with my dad and my dog. He's around 12, we rescued him in 2009 and it was assumed (by the people we got him from) he was around two then, so he's pretty old now. He's a Japanese Chin, and still super energetic and pretty much acts like he did when he was a pup, so we weren't super concerned for his health for a while. I didn't know/wasn't able to do anything when I was younger and my dad would never take him to the vet, even for vaccinations (he did get them when we rescued him, but we stopped going to annuals around 2015 ish). Anyways, he had an issue with his eye a while ago, and I guess I was distressed enough and my dad saw a physical abnormality so he let me take him to the vet. While we were there he got prescribed medicine and we got the bill, although my dad wasn't ecstatic about the price. In a phone call (since we couldn't go in) the vet told me that they had discovered a level 4 heart murmur, and that they wanted to do x-rays, but also an echocardiogram at some later point because they weren't doing any during quarantine. My dad basically said "no thanks" and left. I tried talking to him about it later, and his argument is essentially "I'm not going to invest all that money into an old dog only to have him live two more years". The thing is, this dog is my literal pride and joy. I know that he's older, and probably will be gone in the next year or two, but I don't want to see him suffer if he does have a heart disease. I just don't know how to convince my dad to at least let him be diagnosed so we can try to make life comfortable for him, not even that we would have to get the medicine (if any were suggested). I just want to know if we should be adjusting his daily exercise, making sure he should stay away from certain habits, or looking out for abnormal behaviors. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

**Note, we took him to the vet on April 3rd. So, it's been a while of me just trying to figure out the right wording to make him understand :/

Moving soon and want to get rid of fleas!

Hi! So I am about to move with my three cats. I have all 3 cats on monthly flea meds, but the place I moved into a few months back had fleas when I moved in and I can’t seem to keep them all of the kitties. I’ve lived in a place with a super bad infestation before (they would jump on you from the carpet and constantly be everywhere) and it is not like that currently. I’ve only seen a few here and there but I know that they are there and I do not want to bring them to my new place.

I will not be bringing any furniture from one place to the next, only my cats, clothes, and the cats. I am not super concerned with ridding my current apartment of fleas, but rather I do not want to bring them to the new place. I plan to give each cat a flea bath and their monthly flea preventative prior to bringing them to the new home, but is there anything else I can do to insure all fleas on them have died? All suggestions are welcome!

Cat won't eat any kind of cat food. I'm afraid my dad spoiled her while I was in college

Hi!

So I recently graduated college and moved back home after 5 years basically away from my cat. I got home to realize she basically doesn't eat dry food anymore and will only eat the wet ones. It's been 4 months now and I'm really concerned that even the wet food isn't good enough. She is always meowing around the house (an insane amount more than when i would come back home on holidays) and literally won't leave us alone during meals. I do remember my dad would feed her a piece of chicken or beef every now and then so I fear she is just super spoiled now? Does anyone have any advice on how to "unspoil" her? I know she will be getting old soon so I'm scared that if she stops eating properly now then she definitely won't eat cat food when she's eventually old and sickly.

Thanks!

My parents want to put our cat down due to him peeing in places other than the litter boxes

So, my family has 3 cats, 2 females and a male. They get along generally pretty well, and the male, whiskers, who's also the oldest, is the top cat, for lack of a better word. He has highest priority over spots to lie down and stuff, and the other cats move for him if he approaches.

He's always had some issues with peeing outside the litter box, specifically in our dining room, although he did occasionally pee in laundry baskets and often on fabric things lying on the floor. For a while, he was peeing there without anyone realizing, and as soon as we did, we cleaned the area, put tinfoil down and got felaway or however you spell it to help him not pee there. He peed again on the tinfoil today, and my parents said they'd try another few things, and put him down if he doesn't stop. I want to know what I can do to keep him and help him not do this as an alternative to peeing on the carpet. I'm 17 by the way.

Thank you for help in advance, and if there's any info I left out, please let me know. I just don't want to lose him.

Insurance question on a newly adopted cat

hi all,

I'll be adopting a cat very soon and was looking into getting pet insurance for her. during her vet visit with the foster mom, she was spayed and it was found she has a heart murmur. They said it's common but should also be looked at with an echocardiogram just in case (cat is ~6 months old they think).

While looking into insurance I see that since I'd be getting the echocardiogram based on the vet's recommendation before I had insurance that it won't be covered, even though the cat was not in my posession.

I'm wondering if I just wont ever be able to actually get her insurance to cover this or any condition that arises from it because of this initial vet visit? Seems crazy to me.

Admittedly, I was unethically thinking of getting insurance and then going to a vet right away myself to get a checkup without revealing that she'd already had one that I was aware of (obviously they'll see she way spayed). Do they even have a way to verify if I got info on a heart murmur previously? Really would prefer not to do that, I know it's wrong, but I'm frightened of what I might have to pay over her entire life if it's found she has a heart disease that I need to get her on meds for.

I appreciate any insight and wondering if anyone was in a similar position. I may get some hate for the previous paragraph and I understand but just trying to explore options.

Thanks
