Cat owners who’ve dealt with UTIs

Hello, my male cat (1yo) has been having urinary issues as of late. He’s at the vet now, but I can’t help but feel distraught and anxious about him. I know that UTIs are easily treatable, but they can be life threatening if it’s prolonged. My question is how long is it until a UTI gets very serious?

This started about a week ago when I noticed him peeing outside his litter box and onto the bathroom floor. At the time, I was unaware of a UTI being the cause, and instead thought my cat was telling me to clean his litter box more frequently. I’ve been doing so daily now, but that did not stop his urine problems.

A few more days passed and he still continued to pee on the bathroom floor. I scheduled an appointment with my vet and they told me to call if the problem worsened, and they’d take him in sooner. As of this morning, I walk into the bathroom and find a spot of blood. I call my vet immediately and notify them, and they take him in.

As I’m just about to leave to bring him to the vet, he urinates on the floor again right in front of me. Was very bloody and cloudy with hints of yellow. I rushed him to the vet and they tried collecting a urine sample but were unable to since he peed right before we left. I decided to board him overnight and they’re supposed to give me a call tomorrow to discuss his diagnosis and treatment options.

Since then, I’ve been scaring the shit out of myself by reading about the complications that are UTIs in male cats. I’m afraid I’ve waited too long and his condition may be fatal. So again I ask, how long does it take a UTI to persist until it becoming extremely serious?
