I (19F) want to adopt a cat, what age would you suggest?

Hello! I've had cats since I was 10, and the 1st cat gave birth when she was just 6 months, cause my mom didn't know they could get pregnant so early. We kept one of the kittens.

I've only had kittens and this would be the first cat to be just mine, in my own apartment. I have been going back and forth as to whether I should get a kitten or young cat. My 2 cats had (unfortunately we had to move to an apartment, so they couldn't come with us) very very different personalities, one was very shy but still very sweet, the other was a big goofy, lazy, attention seeking guy.

Now I love all cats, but I would definitely prefer a cat that's more cuddly and wants to just hang out. Of course I'd still play with them and would activate them and take good care of a cat with any type of personality, but I'd really like a cat that wants to sit in my lap and cuddle and such.

I've heard that cats reach mental maturity once they're 2 years old, and that's when you can be certain of their personality. I've fallen absolutely in love with a guy that's 10 months old and I was wondering if he's likely to keep his personality of being a cuddly, attentionseeking, lazy guy, or if it's like a 50/50 chance he might end up very different.

No matter what age, I'm going to adopt from a shelter, (there are no shelters here that kill the cats that won't get adopted, and there are so many kittens that need adoption, plus a lot of older cats get adopted here) I just need to know what people would suggest.

Should I get a 2+ year old, should I get the 10 month old cat or should I go for a kitten? I want what's best for the cat in any scenario and I'll still love them, no matter how they turn out!
