How long do new cat anxieties usually last? Our new cat has been hiding all day except for ~5 hours in the middle of the night when he crawls into bed with us and proceeds to meow like he wants to play. He also hasn’t eaten in 4 days (since we got him.)

We don’t have kids, no other pets, the cat is 5 years old, had one owner until he was 4, was at a foster home with 12 cats for the past year. We heard he was “very social” and liked attention from the foster parent.

We have had him for 4 days, going on 5, and he has yet to eat anything (more than one treat he actually ate yesterday). I know this is basically normal for cats but I’m starting to get concerned as I’m writing this on night 4 of having him here and he still won’t eat. We have set out new food twice a day, tried different flavors of wet food and dry. We even warmed up one of them and just gave him some pieces of our chicken tonight. Nothing.

I’m more concerned about the eating than I am about the hiding, but I also wondered what is a normal period of anxiety where otherwise social cats hide all day.

Are there any tips other than leaving him be? It seems like the internet’s last resort opinion is to take him to a vet but because he’s not eating/ hiding all day... but he seems pretty social when he crawls into bed with us at night like he really wants to be pet. What could be causing this?
