Anybody out there with a cat with IBS?

TLDR: should we get a cat with IBS with currently no symptoms who is being managed with only a specific diet no problem? Worried about insurance.

I’m looking for some sage advice before I possibly do something stupid. We’ve been looking for a family pet for a little while and the current lockdown (England) has made us want to go ahead with plans because we are likely to work from home until September at least. We found a cat not too far who is a thoroughbred British Shorthair, great with kids, and is still quite young and looking for a new home with a garden which we have. All in all it sounds like a perfect fit!

But the cat has been diagnosed with IBS and is currently totally fine and without symptoms because of a specialist diet. Putting on weight great, happy and thriving, but I know that

a) this is an existing condition so getting insurance to cover it is pretty hard

b) IBS can have flare ups all throughout his life and just because it is being managed now it won’t necessarily be the case in the future.

So is there anyone who has a cat with IBS? How has insurance been for you? How much has it cost to deal with IBS over the years? Should we go ahead and get the cat even with the illness? I don’t really want lots of cat diarrhoea around my toddler, but if the illness is perfectly managed now it feels like a difficult decision to make when we really like the cat.
