Flea fear is ruining my relationship with my cat

Last summer, my cat got fleas and my house was infested for three months. They would constantly bite me and crawl all over me and it was hell to live with. I finally got rid of them, and haven’t seen a single flea in almost a year. I’m positive that there are NOT any in my house whatsoever. However, now when I get anxious (especially if im in bed) I start to itch uncontrollably. It feels like there are fleas biting me and crawling on me.

Not to mention that it is ruining my relationship with my cat, who is flea treated. I have so much anxiety about her having fleas again that whenever I see her, I start to itch. If she scratches herself for whatever reason, it’s even worse. I can’t pet or cuddle with her for long because it stresses me out so much. Logically I know that she doesn’t have fleas, but even the sight of her triggers anxiety for me. I love her, and don’t want to ever give up on her, but I have considered putting her up for adoption because of this problem.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank you :(

Green Cheek Conure - any knowledge would be appreciated.

I've had a green cheek conure for the best part of 6 years. And in the last 12-24 months he won't jump on my finger and will continually fly around the house until he is too tired and I have to pick him up to place him back in his cage. Previous to that we were best friends, he would sit inside my shirt, on my shoulder, even laying on his back in my palm. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this change in his temperament?

Poem I wrote when my dog passed

To my Lady Bug,

It all started late one night You crawled on my lap and I held you tight

You liked to play and have your fun, but mommy and daddy loved watching you run.

With so heart and soul you brought light, you always made our dark days bright.

No matter the seasons you were full of joy, mommy still always bought you a toy.

When we were sick you never left our side, honestly typing this I still cried.

I’m saying too much, as any Daddy would but my heart hurts as I know it should.

As I sit here the one thing I miss is our little girl giving us a kiss.

Your brother noticed your empty space, but he will never forget a great chase.

He’s not sure if you’re home but now he knows you can’t steal his bone.

It’s hard to tell in his eyes but for his sister he still quietly cries.

In our hearts you will always be, but Daddy’s little girl is not with me.

Time will pass and our hearts will heal, but your love for us was very real.

Our little girl with Angels you fly into the beautiful bright blue heavenly sky.

For now I must go but one thing you should always know.

Mommy and Daddy loved you with all our hearts and souls.

Rest in piece my little girl.

i have a question, where can i rehome my chihuahua?

can someone direct me where i can rehome him? i don't want no creeps to get ahold of him or take her to a potentially abusive shelter, and what are some no-no options to avoid, asking because he seems scared of me (not all the time) and won't eat anymore (only little bites and water) and can't afford the vet (maybe some tips on those things too?)

How to keep a cat from getting under HVAC

Hi all! I’d really love to get a cat, but what’s been keeping me from it for years is that I live in a high rise condo built in the 1960s with a funky wall unit HVAC in every room. It’s basically a wooden half wall around the unit to cover it up, but the wall stops about 6 inches above the floor. So essentially, it’s this cavernous box that has just enough of a gap under it for a cat to squeeze into and then I’d have no way of getting it out.

I fostered a cat a couple of years ago as a trial, and sure enough she almost immediately went under the HVAC and I had to call building maintenance to get her out. I tried stuffing things under it to keep her out, but she was still able to squeeze through, it was an eyesore, and likely a fire hazard.

Any potential fixes to keep a cat from getting under there? I’d really love to rescue, but I just don’t want the stress on a cat or myself to have to constantly keep them out of there.

Gift idea: customized dog puzzle or dog bed?

My girlfriend got a dog during quarantine and she is obsessed with it. Pretty sure she likes it more than me now. Her birthday is coming up and I really want to get her a fun dog-themed gift. I’m debating between a custom puzzle (she likes puzzles) or a dog bed.

The puzzle would be a funny photo of her dogs face superimposed onto a 1700s aristocrat body like an old painting. The dog bed would just be covered in the dogs face but seems like it would get more usage. What do you think? Any other ideas?

Feral kitten does not like me... but loves my cat (Long post)

I adopted a feral kitten October 31st at 2 months old. He was born in a construction shop’s tool trailer with his other siblings. He was the most skittish one, and was the last one no one wanted :(. Even though I already had a cat who I loved more than anything I did not want to give him to a shelter. So we took him. He’s very anti human, the most nervous cat I’ve ever been around in my life. When we first got him he would not eat around us unless we were in another room. He would hide from us at all times. To shorten the story, he improved some, he is out when we’re around but not when guests come over (not surprisingly). But still, he does not let us touch him. He doesn’t let us get within arm’s length. But he clings to my cat for dear life. My cat definitely helped him adjust to our house more quickly and they’re like brothers. But his attachment to humans has not improved in quite some time. It’s gotten to the point where it almost seems like he’s angry when our cat goes to us wanting to be pet, snuggle, etc. Our kitten aggravates our cat by biting, being aggressive, basically assaulting him until he gives in and goes with him. I just feel sad because I’m not improving with our kitten who seems to hate us and I’m losing time with my cat who is constantly harassed by the clingy baby that is our kitten. Any advice on what to do, how to make our kitten more comfortable with us, how to feel more stable in our home? I would never give him away but the thought of having this type of relationship with him forever has me feeling defeated and sad. Sorry this is super long.

My brothers allergic to cats and my mom doesn’t like dogs...

“Doesn’t like dogs” is going a bit too far, she’s doesn’t want to deal with the loads of responsibilities that come with having a dog and here’s why...

We tried getting a dog years ago (when I was in 4th grade) and we had to give it back to the adoption center after two weeks because it was a lot of work for my mom. She already had two kids to take care of and multiple jobs to work so adding a dog on top of it wasn’t really best idea. She got it because my brother and I were constantly nagging her and making her feel guilty about it (like the idiot kids we were). We are now in our early twenties (pls don’t make fun of us haha,in our culture, you are supposed to stay with your parents until you get married) and feel as though we are responsible enough to bring another life into our home. My mother is open to the idea of a pet but is still hesitant because of what she had to deal with the last time. So I’m asking you guys what should we get or think about getting?

I love cats but they are out of the question due to my brothers cat allergies aggressively rolls eyes and dogs are something she’s open to but it has to be small because we are working with limited space. We aren’t picky in what pet we would like so you can suggest anything. Thanks in advance!

Dog hasn't eaten nor drank water today Help!

My dog hasn't eaten or drank water all day. He has had frequent stomach problems as well as sound coming from his stomach but today the condition seems really serious. The only thing he ate this morning was the medicine that the vet prescribed him when he went to get his checkup a few days ago.

My family and I are really concerned. Even when he refused to eat, he's never refused to drink before. All the vets nearby us are closed so we plan on visiting the vet tomorrow. Is this somehow something that isn't serious? Is there anything that we can do for him right now? Thank you for your answers in advance.

He ate chocolate a few days ago. Could that be the reason why his stomach problems grew so worse?

this was copy pasted from another post that I made

I really need help on what I can do to make him feel better right now. None of the vets are open

Help With Pet Insurance?

So a little background....my family has 4 yo male havanese that we got in December 2016. My little sister (16yr old) had been begging for a dog for a while and my father finally agreed at that time but unfortunately left all the details and research to her (I was away at college). While she did a pretty good job with picking an ideal breeder and all the documentation, she never really considered insurance. Fast-forward two years, the little guy developed bladder stones and my dad had to fork up almost 7k for medical costs. My father was very upset and while we love the little guy, it wasn't easy putting that much money. Now, imagine my surprise, when I finally move back home, that he STILL doesn't have pet insurance. I've taken over responsibility for the insurance and I am in need of advice on insurance suggestions. I already know his bladder stones is considered pre-existing and probably wont be covered, but I would like something that not only covers unexpected accidents and illnesses but also wellness visits, exams, and tests. Basically something very holistic. I don't think my father would pay that much again so I just want to be at peace with no worries if I have to leave again that he'll be okay. Thank you for any advice you guys may have!!!

I am an abusive pet owner. I am deeply ashamed of the way I act and want to change.

Hello pet owners

Obviously I'm using a throwaway account because the kind of stuff I want to talk about here would absolutely wreck my life. I'm also going to obfuscate some details so as to make it harder to connect a story directly to me - so if it feels like part of the story is missing that's because it probably is. I'm not sure what I expect posting this - really I expect to be bashed by a bunch of angry pet lovers until I delete the post. But I'm at least hoping for some thoughtful responses. And maybe by putting it down in solid words I can internalize it a little bit and be a little better in that way.

I'll start from the very top. I am an abusive pet owner. I am deeply ashamed of the way I act and how it effects my pets, my children, and my family as a whole. I want to make a change for the better but after years of trying (and admittedly slowly getting better in some ways) I want to reach out for help. I am afraid to talk to anyone about it, as all it would take would be a quick report to tear down my whole life. So this is my cry into the roiling void that is the internet.

Who is/is not involved?
Obviously myself. I'm in my late 20s and I am NOT an animal person. Why do I have pets then? Because my wife is an absolute animal lover and I caved to her about dogs. Now we have 2 dogs and 2 guinea pigs. I don't have a history of being abusive to animals - in fact I don't have much of a history at all because I've avoided them my whole life. I have a fear of dogs I've slowly been getting over that stemmed from a wild dog pinning me down and tearing out part of my shoulder when I was little. I am generally very friendly to animals that are not my own, but cautious around dogs, especially if they growl, bark, or bear teeth.
My wife and 2 children are not involved. I'm not even sure my wife is aware. If she is, she refuses to face the truth that her husband might be an abusive asshole. For the record now I am NOT abusive to my wife (except in bed ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) or my daughters. I've never laid a hand on them and wouldn't ever even entertain the idea. I truly wish I could have the same kind of composure with the animals but something just ticks differently. My oldest daughter started hitting the dogs but I quickly corrected that - do as I say not as I do eh?
My two dogs. The older one is a small, hyper breed. He's too smart for his own good and likes to push and break rules he thinks he can get away with. He bullies the other dog constantly despite size difference and will steal food from my daughters. If he even thinks he is in trouble he'll run off and piss on everything you own. If he actually is in trouble this is usually followed by shitting somewhere. He's the main one that invokes the response - and usually amplifies it with the mess. The younger dog is a larger, dumber breed. She's clearly a rescue animal and her fearful response to me (understandable) makes me deeply sad. We play sometimes when she's in a good mood and it's very sweet, but also very rare.
My two guinea pigs are not involved. They're little assholes yes, but they're just rodents. I worry that the yelling startles them though.

What is happening?
It's an emotional response. I'm not sure what happens really, I just see red. When the dogs break rules or when they do bad things I start to yell and stomp my feet. Usually this sends them fleeing away and that's the end of it. But it's not the right thing to do already and I'm off on a bad foot. But it gets so much worse when one of two things happens: 1) when the younger dog destroys something. If left unsupervised she will inevitably find something that belongs to my daughters and rip it to shreds. Dolls, books, crayons, clothes - if it's theirs she wants to break it. 2) When either dog responds to the yelling by bearing their teeth, barking, pissing/shitting.
That's when I see red and the breaks come off. I strike the dogs open handed (often repeatedly and rapidly, mind), usually across the face or on the sides. It's open handed but it is NOT soft - I am quite strong due to my line of work. Usually this is the end of it as the dogs flee, whimpering and scared. But sometimes it escalates further, as either has occasionally snapped back at me. This usually ends with me chasing them into the garage usually with a broom (I do not strike with the broom, just slap it on the ground to make noise while yelling). I never leave them for long - they're always back out after 5 or 10 minutes when I calm down and realize the punishment never ever matches the problem.
Often I am quickly overwhelmed by shame. I'll try to make ammends with pets or sometimes do a quick training session showing the right thing to do with treats. But the damage is done and I'm not sure if I'm reinforcing bad actions somehow? I really don't understand dog training - clearly. (yes I know negative responses are terrible ways to teach)

What have you done to try to change?
I've worked a lot over the past few years about changing my actions. I used to be much more hot tempered with the dogs and would insistently chase them back to their beds over the smallest grievance. When they're being good I try to pet more often and give treats for good actions (responding properly to commands, being good around the girls, sometimes just treats for the hell of it). When they're bad is the real test - I try to temper my anger by walking away. Sometimes I'll just send them straight to time out (the phrase "time out" tells them to go to the laundry room and sit until they're told to come out) or just tell my wife to deal with them and remove myself from the situation. I've tried mentally envisioning my own daughters doing what they've done and tempered my responses that way as well. That helps sometimes - if my daughter tore up a shirt I'd sooner ask why than resort to any action I've done with the dogs. But inevitably it happens again. Maybe I'm tired that day or have had a bad day or maybe the stars just aligned wrong and the fuse is lit.

Some answers to the most likely responses I can envision:
"You don't deserve to be a pet owner."
I know, but here I am. Like I said, they're moreso my wife's pets, but they're in the house and I have a heavy hand in taking care of them. I want to change to become a better pet owner - for them, for myself, and for the whole family.
"You should give your pets to someone who is better equipped to care for them."
This is a non-option. How would I explain it to the girls? To my wife? "Daddy is an abusive piece of shit so now we have to get rid of your beloved dogs"? Holy hell that would explode my whole family. I'd rather work through this.
"You are a (insert appropriate insult here)!"
I feel terribly about my actions. Maybe not terribly enough. But no insult anyone on here throws could add constructively to the situation.
"Kill yourself."
No u
"Why haven't you talked to a therapist?"
I'm scared. I'm scared they'll hear the story and, in their disgust, report me to an authority. I'm sure there are those of you who think that would be for the best because the dogs would be in a "better place", but on the opposite end of the deal two young girls would lose the only pillar keeping the house over their head. I have no illusions that such a revelations, especially if authorities became involves, would not absolutely destroy my family.

So why are you here? What are you looking for?
Some direction, really. Maybe some advice on how to approach things. How to control that anger that rises up when it comes to the animals. Maybe some direction on who I can talk to about this aside from a bunch of internet strangers.

I’ve tried everything to keep my cats attention but nothing works.

My 2 year old male cat won’t play for more than five minutes at a time most days. Some days he doesn’t seem interested in playing at all. A few months ago he played quite often. His favorite game was me throwing a makeup sponge so he could run after it. He now no longer cares about any of his toys. I try and rotate them out as best I can. I’ve tried everything from household objects to brand new cat toys. Puzzle feeders, laser pointers, automatic cat toys, etc etc. the list never ends. He’s got tunnels and cat towers and a window that’s always open so he can watch birds and squirrels. He has literally everything he could ever possibly want and although he uses his cat towers and the windows... nothing I do works when it comes to play. I’ve tried everything. I am seriously worried about him getting bored and/ or depressed. I can’t think about anything else. It’s consuming my every thought at this point. Getting another cat is not an option right now. We did try that but he’s aggressive and territorial with other animals so that didn’t work out too well. I just spent then last hour trying to get him to play. He did for about five minutes or so. MAYBE ten. And then went under the bed to nap. He’s got a clean bill of health. I don’t know what the problem could be. Anyone else have any suggestions?! I miss having my play buddy. I’m lucky if I get 30 minutes a day out of him.

Male cat w/ a UTI

So I adopted a cat about a month ago. His first week he’s fine, sweetest cat I’ve ever had. Second week he started peeing outside of the litter box. He does this weird dance I was informed was spraying but does not usually spray. He just goes through the motions and will walk off, mind you he is neutered. He peed about 4 different places in a two day timespan. After a trip to the vet I learned he has crystals & a UTI. The doctor prescribed 3 weeks (21 days) of antibiotics and ordered him to do the Purina vet brand food. The vet tech informed me it’s irregular since he is young (only 2) but since his PH was not super high (it was only 7) I could try to avoid the price of the vet brand and administer the antibiotics and give him purina pro-plan UTI health with both wet and dry food. He loves his wet food but recently I had been mixing the wet and dry more thinking it would be healthier.

Mr.kitty has been completely fine and doing a lot better, he hadn’t had an accident and he is coming up to the end of his 21 days as he only has 3 days left of antibiotics. This morning, I slept in a little longer than normal and heard him in my room. I did not pay him much attention and went back to sleep. I get up this morning to find he had peed in my room on a robe I always wear. I can not tell if he squatted & peed or sprayed. However, the urine in question did NOT smell like cat urine. It was sweet smelling, actually smelled like cranberry juice??? I feel like it is important to note he is not remarking on the same objects, I have been using enzymic cleaners. It’s always a different spot. It bothers me he did this because he has been doing so good. He was also very weird today, had the “zoomies” most of the day and would cry if I picked him up which is very not normal.

I called the vet and they brushed it off and said administer his antibiotics until the bottle is empty and they will see him in two weeks for a check up and not to worry. I am worried bc he is now regressing after doing so good! Also why was his urine sweet smelling? Is that just what a neutered cat’s spray smells like?

My cats no longer play or cuddle with each other

I adopted two kittens, Leo and JoJo, in September and they were instantly best friends and played/cuddled all the time. JoJo (8lbs) now never wants to play or cuddle with Leo (12 lbs), and it's making him sad. Leo tries to play with her pretty often but she immediately makes a weird barking noise and runs away. He's pretty good about respecting her distance when she does, but then he just pouts in his bed. Any advice on how I can help them be friends again?

My cat doesn't want me to hold him anymore

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or some advice.

My cat is a very cuddly maincoon cross with thick fur.He hates being combed but with the recent rain his fur had become knotted so I forcefully comb him which he hated and howl for 15min straight.

Obviously afterwards he hated me but now he's fine but he won't let me hold him now and meows at me to put him down or just runs away. But other than that he still want pats.

I know he doesn't trust me now but how do I rebuild that trust? Will he ever forgive me? Worse is that he still needs combing but I'm to scared to push him over the edge. He's been like this for 3days now.

Thanks

My new senior cat keeps biting my head at night, any insight as to why?

I recently adopted an older cat (about 10 years old) from my local shelter, he's a total sweetheart and very loving. A few nights ago, he bit my scalp a few times, it wasn't a hard bite, mostly a play bite, but it still hurts because well, it's my scalp. He's continued to do this each night since.

I try and deter him, and move away when he's clearly going in for the bite, but he seems really really determined to bite my head, he even jumped at me one time when I shifted away. Again, they're really play bites it seems, but I'd prefer he stopped doing this.

Some relevant details might be that he had some tooth extractions a couple days before I adopted him (two weeks ago).

Has anyone experienced this? Any insight as to why he's doing it? How can I get him to stop?

Advice about adopting a cat when a family member is allergic?

So this is my first post on this Reddit, and I could really use some insight. I've found a wonderful, sweet, beautiful cat and want to adopt him so badly. My family and I already have two hypoallergenic dogs and one hypoallergenic cat that we got about a month ago. My sister has pretty bad allergies, so we've always adopted only hypoallergenic animals. I deeply want to adopt this cat, though, and he's not hypoallergenic. I'm unsure of how I would keep him, though. My sister who has allergies is planning on moving out somewhere between 8-10 months from now, so I would just have to figure out how to keep him separated from her for that period of time. I was considering keeping him strictly in my room and cleaning daily to make sure I don't get any cat hair on her, but I share a room with my other sister, and I feel like that would be complicated. I have also considered asking someone else to keep him for the period of time before she moves out, but if anyone else has any ideas of how I could keep him just for the time before she moves out, please let me know!! I'm determined to make this work!!

What is a good kennel for my cat that has to live outside?

My cat and I live separately, and he lives with my mom, in a kennel setup outside.

But to me it seems kinda small, and I want to get him something bigger now that my tax money is coming in.

I want it to be big enough thta part of his current setup (a 2x3 wire dog kennel I think) can be set in there so he has. a place to climb up.

Also, any accessories that can keep him occupied would be good :3

its best if it can be delivered, since my mom's modes of transportation may not have tje space needed

Tying cats by their legs

Ive come across a picture of a guy who had tied his kitten by its legs (front 2 legs tied together and hind 2 legs tied together) the caption read "troublemaker getting punished for 3 minutes"

me and some people got triggered, especially me, and i told people that this is considered animal cruelty. A lot of people are attacking me telling me that im virtue signaling and that this is not a problem. Ive made a post saying how this can badly effect the cat's psyche and make them fearful/aggressive towards the owner, and i told them that they should play with their "troublemaker" cat so they can spend their energy and calm down. But people are still not getting it saying " its not a big deal, get over it"

My question is: how do I expain to them that this is wrong... Ive googled further explanations on why this is animal cruelty other than just going into the cat's psyche, but ive found nothing but "yes this is indeed cruelty"

please help any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

Cat help/advice

Recently my cat has become quite bloated - initially thought she was just getting a bit big bigger with age, but after a week I've noticed that she has trouble with constipation, and has rarely ate anything. She's been drinking a lot of water and drank some milk yesterday as well. She also peed in the kitchen which is the first time she's ever done that before (has always went to the litterbox)

Cat 14 Female/Has been neutered She was quite thin a couple aweeks ago and was able to fit through my neighbours fence - she can't do this anymore Had her for a long time atleast 10 to 12 years I live in UK Glasgow

I need advice on cat attack

So yesterday me and my mum were walking our dogs, a bichon frise and a toy poodle, when a cat attacked us.

We were crossing the side of a house- a walk path, to get from one road to another when a cat showed up at the end of the path right in-front of us blocking our way.

It happened so fast, the cat just showed up in front of us and started biting the toy poodle in the face. I grabbed the bichon frise coz he was right next to me, my mum pulled at the poodle’s leash and basically yanked him off the ground into my mum’s arms but it was already too late. The poodle had already been bitten twice.

We tried to scream for help and run away but the cat kept chasing us. My mum got bit 12 times before the owner grabbed her cat and made it go inside the house.

The owner was just in front of the house at the end of the path apparently letting the cat out to do a poo ‘coz that’s where it usually does it.

The lady insisted that we wait so she can apply some first aid to my mum’s injury so we did while we waited for my dad to bring the car and take us to the emergency room. My mum ended up with 12 bites and a tetanus shot and she has to go back in 3 days. She was bit on her elbow, leg and thigh.

My dog had to get surgery because the cat bit a chunk out of the webbing of his leg near his crotch. The vet gave him 4 stitches, antibiotics, pain meds and a cone so he doesn’t rip his stitches out. He has to go back in 10 days to get the stitches taken out.

The owners of the cat visited us at the vet and at the emergency room and said they would pay for all the vet fees.

Next day my dad rang them up and sent them a copy of the $800 vet bill but they refused to pay because they said they have footage of what happened. They are claiming that their cat attacked us because my dogs were barking.

I was there. My dogs did not make a sound. Not until the cat had attacked my toy poodle.

Is there anything we can do? We live in the Central Coast in Australia (NSW).

Ragdoll advice?

My mum adopted a 3yo male ragdoll a few weeks ago. The owner told the shelter she gave him up to that he was timid and docile. In reality, this cat is a massive asshole. He hates everything (even lasers!) Headbutts people, and attacks my mum in mini tiger mode constantly. (She's a very gentle woman who is currently covered in scratches). Any advice for dealing with asshole cats?

I end up cancelling my plans just so I don’t have to be with out my cat

My cat is almost a year old, had her since she was 8 weeks, and she is my absolute best friend. I am mainly home every day due to online school and working from home, and have been with her every day all day since I got her basically.

That being said, I will literally cancel plans and errands I have to run, and opt for online shopping due to the fact that I do not want to leave her alone or be without her. I tried a harness and leash but she hates it and refuses to put it on and doesn’t like being outside. As I’m typing this I’m realizing that it sounds very unhealthy but I just don’t know the cause of this.

I’m about to graduate nursing school, and I think all the time about what I’m going to have to do leaving her alone 12+ hours, 3 days a week once I get a job.

Does/Did anyone else deal with this? How did you cope.

Brother and brother cats suddenly lethargic, vet finds nothing concerning. Thoughts?

I have two male kittens, Pixel and Smoky (~9 months) that are mostly inside cats—with an hour or two outside every day. This morning Pixel threw up before being let out for the morning but otherwise seemed to be in okay shape, he's done that occasionally before.

This afternoon, I noticed both of them seemed more vocal/concerned than normal, noticed they hadn't eaten anything all day, then within 2 hours they both got quite lethargic, and I was briefly able to life Smokey's face to check on him and he'd gone almost limp—before waking up—which really freaked me out, as I'd never seen him do that before.

I took them both to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong with either of them, apart from one having a temperature +0.1°C higher than what's considered normal, which the vet didn't seem concerned about. Both are fully up to date on their vaccinations, the vets didn't find any wounds or bite marks, and their ears and teeth were fine.

They're back home now but sleeping together pretty quietly, which is kind of unusual because they're usually quite active.

I don't really have much more to do other than watch and wait and hope they get better at this point, or worse in which case I'd take them to the vet again. Thoughts? Seems super weird to me two cats would out of the blue get sick/lethargic at the same time.

Is it cruel to get a lizard if I might not always be home?

I (21m) am a Canadian military member looking to get a companion for when I move into my new apartment. I'm thinking on getting a lizard like a leopard geck or bearded dragon. My main concern is that being in the military I might get deployed and be gone for a very long time, is that something that can negatively affect my pets well being? I know I have people that can take care of it while I'm gone, everything from feeding to cleaning and handling.

Is my cat gonna be alright?

A few days ago I went to a hospital far from home for 3 days because of my medical checkup. I have 2
domestic shorthair cats, Gafari (4 years old by tomorrow) and Otty (3 months old). My father, younger sister and I went to the medical checkup while only my mother stays at home with the cats because of work. When we were away, my mother told us that Gafari was very hungry when she came back at night. We all thought that it was normal as it was from morning to night (went to work at 830 morning to 1030ish night so it was more than 12 hours). This happens twice as on the third day we went back home.

Fast forward to today, I saw Gafari was not as active as before, he's just sitting at the corner not making any noise and all curled up, even his fur is all fuzzed up. When I picked him up he just stood still. As I put him in a different place he only stood still for a while and sat down in the middle of the living room. What broke my heart is when he walked slowly to a corner and sit down all curled up again. After some time, he peed himself on the floor. He's sick that's for sure but I don't know if it's a disease or just a bad tummy ache.

I'm scared, Gafari has been with me for almost 4 years and I don't want to lose him. I'll bring him to a vet in a couple of hours and I'll give some news if it's good.

Cat litter that is environmentally friendly and cat friendly?

I have a cat that has cancer and he doesn’t care much to get up but I want to place a litter box near him so that he doesn’t require much effort up/down the stairs to the litter. I have other cats as well and we alternate between Fresh Step crystals and Arm & Hammer littler clump.

He has baso carcinoma? The vet pronounced it really weird (recently diagnosed last Wednesday). He did have this cancer on back of his neck last year they kept coming back but when they did a biopsy, they said it is malignant and would not come back. However, he had a big lump behind his ear and that’s when we took him last Wednesday. They said it’s the same thing they removed from his neck last year. So it’s like wth, totally misdiagnosed which this could have been prevented but it’s way to expensive now and he’s old.

Sorry for my rant ... but I’m for some reason paranoid about what we give him and the litter, etc. Also want a healthy litter box for my other kitties

Concerns for cat, threw up once and maybe constipated?

Cat turned 2 recently. She has medium-long hair however never seen her throw up hairballs so it could be hairball backup.

3 days ago an hour after eating, she threw up undigested food. This was a first, never seen her throw up before.

I assumed the food was bad. I threw the food away and started giving her wet food which she likes and is probably more healthy.

However since that day, I think she is constipated, so I'm still giving her wet food because of the gravy/water.

She is not throwing up anymore, but concerned about constipation. .

What is confusing is that she is eating fine, seems happy, tail high, acting normal.

If she doesn't go tomorrow, I imagine I need to schedule a vet appointment, but it may be costly. What can I do to maybe fix the problem before having to pay for vet?

edit: also does catnip help with constipation?

Cat earwax, is a vet visit necessary?

Hi all, and thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

This is the first cat I've owned. He's almost 3 years old. He's had some signs of ear issues for the past couple weeks. It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't gotten better. Whatever is going on seems to only be affecting his right ear. He'll hold his right ear down from time to time, he's got some head shakes going on every now and then, he'll scratch at his ear occasionally and he loves having them rubbed and scratched. The ear that seems to be bothering him has some clear-yellow dry and flakey ear wax. No odor, no black specks. His unaffected ear seems to have wetter and browner looking ear wax.

Other than what's described above, he seems fine. I'd like to avoid a $250 vet visit if I can, but I'm thinking I might create an appointment for him tomorrow.

Can I switch vets and say I just adopted my cat to get out of showing my new pet insurance that my cat has allergies and asthma?

My 3 year old cat seems healthy when you check him out. We just discovered he has asthma and was given a steroid shot by the vet and now he seems fine. He also has allergies and has had to have more tests and steroid shots done in the past. This has all been very expensive.

I just got pet insurance and would love to not list these as preexisting conditions if I can get around it. I was thinking I could get a wellness exam done at a new vet and say I just adopted the cat and don't have any previous records.

I know this is shady, but does anyone know if this could this work?

I feel so betrayed and hurt

I’ve had my cat since he was 2 months old and he is now about to be 2 years old on April 15. Lately, he’s been hissing at me, growling, and trying to escape to go outside. One night he wouldn’t come back inside and kept running if I chased him. He’ll hiss at me when I have guests over as if I’m doing something to him. He’ll randomly poop in places he’s not supposed to and I know he does it to get on my nerves and still I’m sweet to him. I give him the world. Today, he decided to attack me. I was literally just walking up the stairs and boom! He’s been acting all aggressive towards me all day. I’m scared now. He’s literally glaring at me. I’ve been crying all day because I don’t know what I did to him to make him hate me. He has never been the type to even play scratch me. Maybe he’s getting tired of seeing me. Maybe he wants to be an outdoor cat now. He’s healthy and up to date with shots and visits. What should I do? Maybe I’m being dramatic but my pet really is an extension of me so yes I’m so hurt.

My cat might be blind. Advice?

Hey all. I took my cat to the vet today because I noticed she was acting off. She's been bumping into walls and having accidents in some odd places away from her litter box. The vet says she's blind and has high blood pressure -- which he thinks caused the blindness. Her bumping into walls has been fairly recent - like the past few weeks. Before that I felt she was responsive - to toys bouncing about, to me, etc.

The vet said she needs to take medicine for the blood pressure, and I should go see an ophthalmologist for cats to get a better opinion of what is going on.

Some info on my cat is she is 16 years old, domestic cat, mostly indoors. She goes on our balcony a lot. She has FIV, her kidneys have slight issues for her age which makes sense, and she has asthma.

I feel I should take her to get a formal opinion from an ophthalmologist but am open to advice here... on what to do and also what to make things easier for her right now.

When do you know it’s time for a pet to be euthanized?

Hey folks,

My girlfriend has a 19yo cat who is a real lovable guy. He will hang out with us, sleep with us, and really most of the time he’s okay. However, about 2 months ago, he started having this issue where he will yowl for a bit. And then every other time or so it seems like a stroke or blood clot, he will become disoriented. He’s clearly in a lot of pain. He sometimes loses control of body fluids. He sometimes can’t walk, breathing becomes fast.

This repeating situation is pretty traumatic for us, and I’m sure the cat as well. It feels like you’re watching him die, but it has happened several times now. Then within a few hours, he’s fine.

She has taken him to the vet. They said he’s in good shape for 19, but probably has a heart condition and gave us some medicine for pain and heart. It seemed better for a while, but it’s still happening same as before. Of course, we could take him to the vet every time it happens, but sincerely, we’re just not the type to want to spend a fortune keeping a 19yo cat, who is in pain, on life support.

The hardest part is that when it’s not happening, he’s fine, mostly. He throws up every now and again, he has accidents outside the litter box fairly often. But it’s not so chronic that it’s unmanageable, it only mildly interferes with our quality of life. And he will jump on the couch and lay with us, communicate to us, and so on.

The question for us is when we should consider to euthanize him? I think if we had a child around, it would be traumatizing for a child to see a cat live like this. We even become emotional when it happens. And it’s high tension, scary. I would think that it would be worth it to protect a child from seeing such a stressful thing. But it’s just us, i suppose we are more resilient, but it’s still hard.

It’s such a hard decision. He’s a happy cat 95% of the time. And this 5% is very tough for us. I guess it seems that, otherwise, he will continue living like this. And it’s a little frustrating for us, because we know it’s going to continue happening if not get worse. We don’t want to see him like this, but we do want to see him when he’s happy, and he is, quite often! It’s very confusing. And it’s hard to say what he would want, so here I am to ask you all!

Let me hear your advice!

[Need Advice] My bengals keep peeing outside the litter box

I have two bengal males, both fixed.

I've never had any issue with them when they were kittens, but since they turned 2 (now 3), they keep peeing with their butt up in the air and shiver while peeing. Not sure if it's pain shiver.

I bought the biggest litter box i can find, perhaps there are bigger ones. But even then they find ways to pee over the box.

I live in a house now where i am using a space underneath the stairs as dedicated litter room, so it's fine, but we are moving to a condo where I will have to leave the litter box in the office room or something. So I am thinking of buying a litter box enclosure where i put the litter box inside so as to keep the smell contained to an extent and to not have a litter box visually open in the wild. The enclosure is pretty enough to pass as a furniture, and I can put some stuff on top as well.

My concern/question/request for help is:

  1. Why do cats do this? Is it because they are hurting somewhere (UTI?? they have access to free running water fountain, clean at all times) Is it because the box is dirty? I have two boxes cleaned once a day, the litter room is vacuumed and cleaned once a day, box is cleaned once every two weeks or month.

  2. The enclosure box is jumbo sized but it's still not as big as I would have liked. My concern is that whatever litter box i can find to fit inside will not have high enough walls to block their butts from being up in the air as they pee. What clever/effective way can you guys recommend me to line up the inside of the enclosure to make it easier to clean and to protect the enclosure and potentially leaking out onto the floor? Would be nice if there is someway i can connect the litter box to the walls of the enclosure with thick plastic sheet of some sorts that is easy to replace (install/remove) so i dont have to spend hours scrubbing down the box.

  3. Could litter type also be a raeson why they pee weirdly like this? The only difference between before they turned 2 and after when they started peeing like this is i changed their litter. It's more expensive and supposedly be better. But ever since i changed the litter, im not saying there is necessarily a correlation but it's when they started peeing outside the box. i had to change the box size four times already.

Please advise. It's a brand new condo and I really dont want to ruin the floors/walls/unit itself. Thank you

ok to let cats drink water from the dehumidifier?

When the dehumidifier in the basement gets full I gotta dump the water down the drain. Was just thinking, this should be fresh water right? Can I use this for my cats water bowl? I don't think we have the greatest tap water here, at least I don't drink it, so I feel bad using that for their water, so figured this might be an oppurtunity for fresher water for them (tap water leaves white residue if left on a surface, so after something like a shower, you got white splotches all over the shower).

Unless there is something that the dehumidifier adds to the water? If I am thinking correct, it just pulls in moist air and converts to water right?

Can I be too close to my dog?

I’m 19, I got my dog when I was around 14 and we’ve spent everyday together since. I don’t have friends, never had, so all my time is spent with him. I talk to him about everything, and spend all day with him. Despite hating affection and physical contact with people, me and him are always hugging and kissing, and I constantly give him praise and massages (his back gets sore). He’s the only thing in the world that ever sees me as talkative and loving. Is this negative? I can’t see my life continuing without him.

We recently adopted a new boi, our first long hair cat. He's adorable, albeit annoying at night, but more importantly, his fur seems to absorb the litter box smell and stay greasy constantly. My kitten is aggressive and my dog is skittish

I have a female beagle for 8 years. And I decided that it would be a good idea to get a kitten so my dog can have a friend for when I am away.

I tried to follow the steps of getting those 2 to get to know each other. I gave a room to the cat where the dog had no access into. I exchanged smells using blankets. And I even put them in the same space but far away from each other. This process has been ongoing for close to 6 weeks now.

Today my sister let the cat out and came into contact with my dog. She doesn't seem to assume attacking pose but still, she was approaching her and throw some small hits with her paw and claws while my dog was scared shitless behind the toilet.

Whan can I do to change her perception of the cat? How can I make them friends?

My Jack Rusell rescue is accidentally becoming a support dog

We adopted our JRT mix a bit over a week ago now. She's a year and a half and a big bundle of energy! She was found as a stray after having been hit by a car and was with her foster home for about 6 months. Before that, they don't believe she was owned by anyone but no one can be sure.

Ellie is definitely on the go all the time. She's very sweet, but rarely sits still and is always playing or running around. These behaviors are fine, and expected with a JRT. However, I've noticed that the only time she sits still outside of sleeping is when I'm sad or anxious.

Our other dog is going through some health issues and we believe she's approaching the end (she was doing very well on her meds until the last few days so we had no reason to believe thay when we adopted Ellie). This is obviously really sad for us and I've been crying a lot the last few days. I've also had a lot of stuff going on with my job that's been incredibly stressful and makes me really anxious as of late.

I noticed that when I was feeling particularly anxious, Ellie would come over to me and sort of drape herself across me and just sit. It was actually pretty calming, and it was the only time she was ever just being still. I thought it was odd, but also brushed it off a bit and thought maybe I only noticed her doing it when I was anxious.

However, the last few days when I've been crying a lot, she's noticed almost immediately, and she'll come over and sniff my eyes and then out her face as close to mine as possible so our cheeks are touching. She'll sit like that for a bit before draping herself over me. This morning I was laying in bed and crying and she draped herself calmly and gently over my chest, which was very comforting.

I spoke with her foster mom before adopting her and she mentioned she hadn't trained Ellie at all except to not pee in the house (I asked her if she had been trained to sit, do tricks, etc) so I don't think she learned that behavior there.

Anyway, long story longer, I think Ellie wants to naturally calm me down and by encouraging it when she does it, she's now learned that it's a good behavior (it is!) and I've accidentally made her into my support dog lol

TL;DR My dog lays on me calmly when I'm sad/anxious until I calm down/stop crying and no one trained her to do it.

Should I return my cat to the shelter?

I am currently an undergraduate student and have struggled with depression for years. My coursework has always been rigorous, but somehow COVID-19 pushing several classes to a virtual format has made them even more difficult to navigate. Additionally, where my school is located it snows for a good portion of the year - I’m from the warm and sunny south, so the grey skies and cold weather year round aren’t great for my overall happiness either. I have two dogs that stay at my parents’ house while I’m at school and I love them to death. They never cease to make me smile and can always brighten up my day. I was considering taking one of my boys back to school with me, but they are very closely bonded and both get depressed when separated (i.e. won’t eat, won’t go outside, sleep and/or whine all day, etc.)

Enter: the cat.

Since I could not, in good conscience, separate my dogs, I decided that I would get a cat to take with me. I felt that a cat would better tolerate the smaller living space and would get fewer noise complaints from my neighbors than a dog. Knowing I did not want to go through the kitten phase, I set my sights on older cats. One day I was buying food for my dogs and saw a few cats in the store’s adoption center. Of course, I decided to look - one of my main concerns with COVID was that I wouldn’t be able to meet most animals in person, so I jumped at the chance to interact with real animals rather than pictures on a website. There were several kittens, which I pet a little but largely ignored. Then, I saw a large black and white cat lounging on top of a cat tree. I asked the worker about him - coincidentally, the woman working there that day had fostered that exact cat before. I started asking her about his personality, where he gravitates toward within the home, favorite toys, how long the shelter had him, etc. She told me that Mo was about 3 years old, was pretty laid back but “curious,” and - this is what really sold me - was great with dogs. Making a mental note of Mo and the shelter he was from, I went about my day, as I’m not the type to make impulse purchases/adoptions. I waited a while and kept searching for cats, but really felt a connection to Mo. I went back to visit him a few times within the next few weeks, asking more questions about him to staff members every time, and he seemed to be confident and moderately friendly. After careful consideration and triple checking my ability to financially support another, new pet, I decided to adopt Mo a few weeks before I was supposed to head back to school.

I kept Mo upstairs in a quiet, spacious bathroom for his first few days so he could get acclimated to his new environment. Surprisingly enough, he seemed perfectly settled the moment he set foot in my house, laying out in the middle of the floor and purring. I was very excited, as I know lots of cats are finicky and fearful for a long time in a new home. The dogs stay downstairs, so Mo had the whole second floor to himself. I quickly realized that I was pretty allergic to cats. “Not a big deal,” I said, “I’ll take some Claritin and adjust to him in time.”

After a few days, I started introducing Mo to my dogs. I started by swapping items with their scent - I put Mo’s carrier in the dog room and the dogs’ blankets in Mo’s room. Eventually I started feeding them on opposite sides of the door so that they could get even more accustomed to each other. After several days, I decided to see if I could introduce my Yorkie to Mo in an upstairs hallway that neither Mo nor the dogs frequented (so that it was largely neutral territory). I chose my Yorkie as the first introduction because he is smaller than my other dog - a beagle mix - and avoids other animals, largely preferring the company of humans. My partner was sitting on one end of the hall, petting my Yorkie Sam, while I opened the door to let Mo into the hallway. Sam looked at Mo, took a few steps forward to sniff (still ~15 feet away), immediately got bored and returned to my partner for more cuddles. Everything was going well - Mo wasn’t showing any signs of stress/fear around Sam. However, a second later, Mo calmly padded right up to Sam and whacked him on the face. Sam, stunned, got quickly hit two more times before cowering behind my partner’s legs. My partner immediately grabbed Sam and stood up to get him out of range, turning away from Mo. Even with Sam in my partner’s arms, Mo was standing on his hind legs and managed to get another hit in before Sam could be conveyed downstairs. I want to stress that Mo was NOT aggressive or fearful, he seemed to just enjoy playing with/bullying Sam. Needless to say, Sam was very scared of the cat after that. That wasn’t a dealbreaker, however - “I’ll just work on introducing them slowly again, increasing the distance, distracting both parties with treats/play during the interaction,” I reasoned.

A few days after that I was bringing some new supplies into the room where Mo was; when I opened the door, he swiped at my legs and shoved past me while I was caught off guard. He immediately made a beeline for the stairs. I assumed it was his white whale, since the few times he had managed to slip past me or open a door I had always caught up to him before he could make it down. Unfortunately, this was one of the few times my dogs were relaxing in the downstairs living room instead of outside or in their room. Needless to say, I dropped everything and sprinted after him, intending to catch him before he ran straight into the jaws of my beagle mix. I even wound up falling down half the stairs in my haste. Ignoring the bruising on my legs, I looked up just as the cat made it to the bottom step and darted out of my reach. The movement, however, attracted the attention of my half-asleep beagle, Sterling. He immediately went into kill mode - I knew he had a high prey drive, which is why I did not plan on letting him meet Mo until a few more weeks of VERY gradual introduction. Sterling shot around the corner and was snapping at Mo, who was cowering under the dining room table. Thankfully, Sterling had a cone on because he was recovering from a major surgery and, as a result, could not fit under the table and finish the job. I was able to drag Sterling away and told him to go back to his room. I then was able to pick up Mo and bring him back upstairs. Mo was obviously traumatized by the experience and Sterling could not see the cat as anything but prey from that point on. While I was extremely disappointed, I still didn’t see that as grounds to give up. “More time, they’ll just need a lot more time and training. It will be hard but I can work with them,” I told myself.

Soon, it was time for me to go back to school. It was a long drive, so I planned everything in advance. I bought a medium pop-up dog kennel to put in the backseat so that Mo had enough space to get up and walk around, use a disposable litter box I put in there, and drink some water. I also included a small scratcher and a shirt of mine that I had sprayed with Feliway. I had tested out driving short routes around town with Mo in the weeks leading up to my return to school, and he did pretty well. I wound up getting a mild sedative from the vet, however, as he started to get a little vocal and restless on the longer test drives. The day of the trip, everything was fine and Mo seemed pretty calm. Fifteen minutes into the drive, Mo starts meowing. My partner, who was traveling with me, was comforting him, petting him, and giving him treats periodically. Five minutes later, Mo starts pawing at the kennel and I said “No,” very firmly, causing him to stop. There are a few minutes of silence, when all of a sudden I hear frantic pawing, followed by a tearing sound (he had split the zipper). Next thing I knew, Mo was in the front seat, tail up and purring, almost making me swerve off the road. I pulled over at a truck stop, put him back in the kennel, and secured the broken zippers together with a tie before getting back on the road. Three minutes in, there’s another ripping sound - this time, he had torn through the actual seams of the kennel, making it completely unusable. I pulled over AGAIN and wound up putting him in a much smaller carrier, as it was the only containment device I had left and I wasn’t risking my life with a loose cat in the car. Five minutes later, Mo claws through the seams of the soft carrier from the inside. Within 35 minutes, he had ruined $150 worth of containment. And we still had 9 hours to go. I wound up putting his harness on him and tying him to one of the seats - the little b*stard was perfectly content to sit on top of my suitcase and look out the window for the rest of the drive.

“Rough start,” I said as I brought my stuff back into my dorm room, “but everything should mellow out now.” Mo, true to character, settled right into his new living space as if he hadn’t just traveled 600 miles in the span of two days. The first few weeks were full of trial and error - we were still getting to know each other’s personalities. I found out what toys he liked, what food he liked, his favorite spots to lounge around my room, and his favorite things to chew/knock over. It was frustrating at times, but owning a pet always is initially so I sucked it up. He has become increasingly destructive as of late, however. I come home to a war zone almost every night, whether he’s rummaged through my trash, knocked things off my desk, bit completely through his bag of food right in the middle so that kibble was all over the floor, somehow knocked a plant off a high shelf, etc. It seems like it never ends! I physically don’t have enough space to secure every single possession of mine and, even when I think everything is fine and secure, he manages to get into something else.

I really feel like I am giving this my best shot. There have been a lot of hiccups, but every time I’ve said, “It’s ok, I’m willing to work with him, there’s obviously something I’m doing wrong.” He even scratched me very badly the first time I started vacuuming; I noticed he was getting freaked out so I turned off the vacuum, unplugged it, put it across the room, sat next to Mo, and pet/verbally reassured him for the next twenty minutes until he was calm again - his eyes were half closed and he was purring a little. My hand had been resting on him for the majority of those 20 minutes but, for whatever reason, as I started to pick him up to put him on his cat tree (where he feels the most secure) he clawed the whole length of my forearm with his back legs. Thankfully I had just clipped his nails a few days prior, but I was bleeding a decent amount and probably should have gone to a doctor. Even then, I said, “It’s not his fault, he was probably still on edge from the vacuum,” despite him not showing any overt signs of fear.

Now, I’m starting to think he’s just not the right fit for me. I actively play with him for 20-30 minutes morning and night, I bought interactive toys for him during the day, I have several puzzle feeders to keep him engaged, and I leave the shade up on the window because he loves lounging in the sun and watching the construction across the street for hours. Since he has rummaged through my trash and chewed though several food containers, I thought “it makes sense that he’s hungry during the day, let me get an automatic feeder.” Mo’s food is portioned up into five meals per day - he doesn’t go more than four hours without eating in the daytime, yet I still come home sometimes to him rifling through the garbage when there’s NO food trash in there. On nice days, I take him outside on hiking trails for a long walk (1 hr+) in his harness. We have nightly obedience training sessions to get his brain working and build our bond. I have no clue what else I can do to keep him stimulated. I have spent well over $500 dollars in total on passive toys, interactive toys, puzzle feeders, an automatic feeder, cat trees, scratchers, etc. but he still seems to be doing this stuff out of boredom. I definitely don’t believe he’s a bad cat, but I honestly feel like he may not be best for me. I’m starting to feel like he would do better as a single pet in a larger space. I truly only want what’s best for him - I’m not trying to get rid of him simply because he’s a little destructive. I feel that I can’t give him the space, constant attention, mental stimulation, and regular interaction he craves. Additionally, it’s been months and I’m still quite allergic to him. I vacuum every few days, brush him out (with a mask on) with a deshedding tool whenever I can, and even wipe him down with a damp towel every now and then in case I’m allergic to his saliva.

I’m considering returning him to the shelter I got him from. They readily retake the pets they adopt out, and I would prefer I bring Mo back to the (no-kill) shelter I got him from than subject him to a new place. I suppose I’m asking, is this enough to warrant a return, or am I not trying hard enough? To all the people who will say, “a pet is like a child, you wouldn’t give your child away if they weren’t acting right,” you can stop right there. I understand that having a pet is a commitment and I FULLY intended to fulfill that when I adopted him. However, with the persisting allergies, small space, behavior issues due to boredom that I cannot at this point in time alleviate, and two dogs waiting at home - one terrified of the cat, the other viewing him as another opossum or squirrel - I’m really starting to feel like everyone involved might be happier if Mo went back to the shelter. At least then, I could tell the employees specific details regarding what I’ve learned about his personality, energy needs, favorite toys and treats, dog interactions, etc. and give them more information they could use to find him a perfect, forever home. Does it make me a terrible person for considering bringing him back to the shelter?

Cat food discontinued

My elderly cat (15.5 yo) has been eating the same food for 4 years. I know it has been working well for him since all his recent labs came back perfect (in the words of the vet: the best labs for a 15 year old cat they have ever seen). However his food is being discontinued... Blue Buffalo Healthy Gourmet Turkey and Chicken entree is now upgraded to a new version and going off the reviews, everyone hates it.

This is a huge bummer, since I was hoping we will keep feeding him the food that works for him till his last days. Could anyone recommend a cat food that is yummy, grain free and healthy? Price point is not of a huge concern for us at this moment, we would pay anything to help him live longer.

Best over the counter ear mite medication for cats?

Hello, I know going to the vet is the best option, but I was wondering what the most effective over the counter medication for ear mites for cats is. I am wondering because I am planning on rescuing a cat soon. I already have six cats who are in good health. This cat will be in his own room but I do believe he might have ear mites since he's been living outside ever since his abusive owner kicked him out (quite literally). Having rescued many pets in the past, I understand how much vet bills can add up. Any ideas or advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

What are her chances?

I have been toying with an idea that I feel will most definitely backfire but I also feel like maybe it won't because I know there are good people out there.

Let me preface this with saying I have not always been a part of this household. All of these animals, aside form one cat and one dog (both of which are mine) were here before me. I had no say in how they were raised or taken care of.

Our household has always been rather crowded. We have a three bedroom house with half an acre of land but even that hasn't been enough for how many animals we've accumulated. Two of our cats are indoor/outdoor and two are indoor only. One of the indoor/outdoor kitties has a very timid and submissive personality and she's been relentlessly bullied by two of our other kitties.

Although she has been in this household since 2 months old, she has never once used a litter box. She spends all day on the back porch and only comes in during night. She has used parts of the house as her litterbox for years and although I scrub these places clean, the damage is permanent.

Due to a stressful change in the household, my boyfriend and I will be leaving. We will be taking two of the cats and one of the dogs with us. One of the cats that will remain here is the one that doesn't use a litter box and is very timid. We were the only ones that put any effort into the care of these animals so it is very apparent things won't get any better after we leave.

We have a new housemate and what she says goes I guess because it's been about a month and a half now and this cat has been forced to sleep outside in the cold ever since this new housemate voiced her disgust about her. I bought her a bed but that's the most of what I feel I can do. I have NO say in whether or not she comes in... even if I said I would clean any mess she made, she is no longer allowed in this house.

My question is... what if I tried to rehome her? Into a home without any cats or dogs and into a home where the new owners know of her struggles and litter box issues and could maybe work with her? She is 12... do you think she would have a chance? Or do you think rehoming her at this point would be more harmful? Especially if the rehoming backfires and they give her back.

If she has a nice warm bed and a full bowl of food and water everyday, would it be better to leave her be to live out her senior years in a place she knows?

Like I said, we are leaving and this is one of my biggest worries. It breaks my heart that her issues were never addressed and now she is being punished for something she doesn't understand. We can't take her with us as we are moving into an apartment or else I would but I think moving her into a smaller space with the same animals that bullied her would be even worse.

I don't know. Even if I COULD find someone willing to take her and work with her, would it even be worth it? Or would it be cruel in a way too to uproot her from everything she's ever known at such an old age?

Day 36 of cat introductions? Time for supervised interactions?

Resident cat is around 2 years old and new kitten is now about 5 months old. He is more playful than she ever was - and confident.

We are still feeding between a baby gate, sometimes doing simultaneous play. Resident cat growls and hisses as soon as she’s done eating or if he approaches the gate and tries to get her attention. Her growling has gotten quieter and she no longer lashes out on us (it was bad for a while lol) but she has started to get up to his face at the gate and swats/lunges at him. She’s spit once (yesterday) but besides that it’s mostly growling. She really doesn’t like when he approaches her or tries to interact with her even vocally.

Thing is she used to hiss and growl and then make a big huffing noise and run off, hiding under the bed. She’d growl and swat at us if we tried to touch her. Now she will kinda lay down by the gate next to him but will still be growling. If he makes any noise she quickly lunges and tries to swat at him. She doesn’t really run away anymore and she seems more relaxed but still not into him. Before she literally looked like she wanted to hunt him down. Completely fixated, eyes dilated, stiff, not responsive to us, etc...

So we’ve pretty much hit a plateau at this point so my question is when should we start supervised interaction? I’m not expecting her hissing and swatting to stop before we let them really meet, but I don’t know if we’re there yet? There’s definitely been a change in response/behavior but with the swatting I can’t tell if it’s worse or better lol! Thanksssss!
