Hello all! My SO and I are closing on our 1st house next month, and we know that we will be wanting to welcome a new fur baby into our lives (once we are settled in, of course)! I am 21 and he is 22; and we both work full time- I work 11-7 and he works 3-11 and have opposing days off. I have 3 kitties that of course will be going with us, and I do some wildlife rehab when I can! That is a little bit of relevant info on us because we know a puppy (if we so decide, we WILL be considering adoption as well)/ a new dog in general is a BIG commitment; but we are up for it! The thing is, I want a Golden Retriever and he wants a German Shepherd. I am no expert on dog breeds by any means, but the reasona I want a Golden are their smarts, and their friendly/ loyal demeanor. He wants a Shepherd again because of smarts/ trainablity, and wants to have a dog that would be protective when need be (no we would NOT train for aggression, we just are aware of the breed's protective nature). I've told him that I feel like a Golden may match better in our new suburban home; we are moving into a quiet neighborhood with a decently sized yard (nothing massive or extravagant). I have also expressed that I feel a Golden would mesh better with kiddos and visiting family/ friends (we plan on having kids of our own in a few years). He basically says the same for a Shepherd. At this point, it's an equal toss-up. I was wondering if anyone might be able to give us a few pointers on what breed may mesh better with us- or any suggestions of some other breeds! With whatever dog we decide on, we will definitely house train them, and excercise regularly, of course. We will also be socializing them early on, and take them out for "freedom runs" on my SOs land that se plan on building on on a few years! Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thank you in advance!
