Are 4cm straight cuts normal for cats?

My cat was acting weird yesterday, when I tried to pick him up he was obviously in pain, and then I found out there was something wrong with his belly. Took him to vets and they said he has a 4cm deep cut on his belly, they needed to do an operation and open him up to see if his organs are ok. Luckily they are but now he needs antibiotics and to stay in for 2 weeks while his stitches heal.

He was fine the night before and the morning so obviously he must have cut himself at some point during the day. I have searched high and low for what may have caused it but I struggle to find it. It's a nice neighborhood, no troublemakers or animal abusers as far as I'm aware. He is an antisocial cat so he doesn't go near people and you couldn't catch him even if you tried.

I came to ask if its common and what may have caused it? Its really freaked me out and I don't want it to happen again :(
