My cat is the love of my life. For context, he has a bad habit of dashing outside whenever someone opens the front door and makes him impossible to catch, but is always home right before sunset so it was never a huge issue. But I just want to preface by saying I never let him out intentionally, he would just sprint outside and run off even if you chased after him whenever someone opened the door. I’ve tried repellent sprays, giving treats when he stayed indoors, playing with him to distract him to stop him from going outside, but none of these ever worked.
I thought this was a result of him maybe being lonely and needing another cat friend, so a week ago I adopted a new kitten in hopes they would grow close and he wouldn’t feel the need to go outside anymore. So far, this was not going as planned; him and new cat couldn’t be near each other without them screeching and trying to claw each other out. I thought that it would get better with time and have been following advice online on how to get cats to be okay with each other.
Yesterday, my cat did the same thing where he ran outside. Ok, no problem, he’ll be back by sunset. He never showed. This is something so out of the ordinary that I’m freaking out. I’ve been running around outside calling out to him to no avail and Im horribly worried that something happened to him. I also have been looking back at the past week since I got my kitten and realized he may have been a lot more distant and recluse (he wouldn’t play as much, was eating less, sleeping a lot more) since I got her so maybe he ran away out of jealousy or maybe he feels he can’t claim his territory back with my new kitten around? This might have all been caused because I brought hone another cat and I’m feeling so guilty for not realizing how it was affecting him and not recognizing the signs. I’ve been trying really hard to make them get along so he’d have a friend in the house that I didn’t realize that maybe he simply just doesn’t want another cat around.
I live in a very safe gated neighbourhood so I don’t think anyone would have taken him but I’m overthinking now and paranoid that someone maybe did. He’s a very beautiful unique looking cat and has no issues or fear with people. Any random person can easily pick him up and take him wherever. Please, I would love some advice on what to do. It hasn’t been that long since he would usually come home but again, it’s out of the ordinary for him to not show up at the time he always does come back at. Thank you in advance for any help!
