Is it normal for liquid to get out when giving cat ear medication?

I’m trying my best to give my cat ears meds, but I’m worried I’m doing it wrong. When I give the cat the meds, there’s usually some wet liquid on the outside of the ears after we’re done, and I feel like I’m not getting enough into the ear.

When I squeeze the meds in, I try and massage the ear to get them deeper into the canal. Sometimes I hear some squishing when I do this, sometimes not. It’s also really hard to tell how many drops I’m giving - if I tilt the bottle to see the nozzle when giving the meds, it feels like they’re not going deep enough. I’ve resorted to sticking the nozzle deeper and giving a moderate squeeze that I think would result in 4-6 drops.

I’m worried I’m wasting the meds and having them not be affective. Any tips for how I can do this better?
