Cat earwax, is a vet visit necessary?

Hi all, and thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

This is the first cat I've owned. He's almost 3 years old. He's had some signs of ear issues for the past couple weeks. It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't gotten better. Whatever is going on seems to only be affecting his right ear. He'll hold his right ear down from time to time, he's got some head shakes going on every now and then, he'll scratch at his ear occasionally and he loves having them rubbed and scratched. The ear that seems to be bothering him has some clear-yellow dry and flakey ear wax. No odor, no black specks. His unaffected ear seems to have wetter and browner looking ear wax.

Other than what's described above, he seems fine. I'd like to avoid a $250 vet visit if I can, but I'm thinking I might create an appointment for him tomorrow.
