I think my cat is sick

My cat has been throwing up white little foamy pieces starting today, but now it is midnight and the vomit is now yellow. I just checked his litter box and he seems to have diarrhea. Could it be something he ate or is he getting sick? I know that it’s hard to give a clear answer but I guess I’m just looking for reassurance that he’ll be ok :( And I should also mention that he’s about 3 months old.

Grain free dog food causes heart disease?

I just took my dog to the vet not too long ago and they asked me what I was feeding him. When I told them I feed him grain free dog food they told me to stop and switch him to grain or a home made diet because vets have been linking grain-free dog food to heart diseases in dogs.

Just thought more people should know about this! πŸ‘ Stay safe everyone!

Puppy suddenly chasing and wrestling cats

My puppy is 20 weeks old and I’ve had him since he was 8 weeks. Up until now he and my two resident cats have mostly ignored each other. Occasionally pup would try to play with them, but they’d bat at him and he’d leave them be. That has suddenly changed DRASTICALLY. Pup will chase them through the house and try to wrestle with them. He’s not being aggressive, he genuinely just wants to play, but I’m worried about my cats. He’s much larger than them and it’s obviously causing them distress. What can I do to help with this behavior?

Please tell me what you think is happening to this dog.

First off, if this was my dog I would be rushing him to the vet. I have been looking to adopt a senior dog. I found this little guy and the rescue has approved me to adopt him. However, the rescue's reviews when it comes to medical records on their dogs isn't great and they won't share them until AFTER the adoption. Sketchy, I know, but this dog needs a home. The dog's foster mom was kind enough to send me this video. What do you think is going on here? I have my thought, but I'm curious as to what you all think. The rescue says it could be extreme itch from allergies. Side note: he is wearing a cone for conjunctivitis. Another note, he has liver disease the rescue says is small liver that only needs prescription diet food for liver care. Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/CViWIPiDNOA

Introducing a dog and cat

Hello I need all the help I can get. We just got a new eight week old kitten. When we tried to introduce her to our dog, who is VERY playful, it got quite wild and they were stuck in a quarrel and 3 minutes was more than enough. Our kitten is in our basement away from our dog, but I’m worried. How can I introduce a playful dog to a young kitten who is already quite afraid. Thank you for all help. 🐾🐾

I found a kitten and need advice

earlier this morning, my dogs were barking ay something. i went to check it out and it was a little kitten wandering about 3-4 feet away from our dogs. i quickly picked it up and brought it inside and then tried to find any other kittens or the mom but there was no sign of them. So im stuck with a maybe 3 week old kitten its eyes are half open and its walking. i wanna take care of it however, due to the current situation it would be difficult to get some formula to feed and hydrate it. i think the only choice here is to leave it where it might be found by its mother.

Best way to wash dog that hates tub?

New place and backyard is still mostly sandy dirt, so i can't hose her down out there. 5.5 month old puppy, HATES the tub. We tried to do it with treats, toys, etc. To get her to hopefully enjoy it, but nah. She loves chilling under the towel with my daughter brushing her hair. But her in the tub is a pain in the ass. Any first hand suggestions would be appreciated.

*edit additional info: she trains exceptionally, and retains well. Waits for her bowl, sits at the door and waits on hand signals, etc.

She'll play in the rain. Satyed away from the pool though now that I add it together

How can I convince my dad to let me get a dog?

So I am 15 and I have really been wanting a puppy recently. When I was younger we had a dog but I have a history that has made me deathly afraid of them and I was terrified of him for a long time and never had the chance to get attached until he died when I was about 10. Recently my best friend got a dog and I have gotten over my fear of dogs because I have been around such a nice and a lot calmer dog. Now when dogs get hyper, jump and run around I am no longer scared of them.

Anyway back to the question, now that I am no longer afraid I have been wanting a puppy (a lab, husky, or a german shepard to be exact) my mom is completely ok with the idea of having a dog (adult or puppy doesn't matter to her) but my dad doesn't want another dog and he knows my mom wants one but doesn't know I do. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I could approach him on the topic and convince him to let me get a dog?

Kitten bullies!

Hello! (Backstory) Me and my partner just rescued a 6 week old kitten (m) from the road and brought him home to our apartment. Also occupied by our 3 year old (m) kitty. I made sure the kitten was FIV negative before introducing them. I had the kitten shut in the bedroom for about a week, and would let them sniff each other about once a day until the vet gave me the FIV results. I have given my 3y/o kitty EXTRA attention because I know they can get jealous.

Since I have let the kitten out of the room for a couple hours at a time (I don’t leave them alone together) he’s been constantly nipping at my other cat’s tail. They’ve started running around the house and (hopefully?) play fighting, but every time the kitten jumps at my older cat (he’s relentless, really) my older kitty meows annoyed-like at the kitten. I’ve only heard him hiss once, but he growls and low-meows at him quite often. I haven’t heard any pained noises from the kitten, and honestly he deserves to get batted every once and a while by my older cat. But are they playing or fighting?

TL;DR got a new kitten and he’s relentlessly attacking my older cats tail, minimal growling, mostly meowing and aggressive licking. Are they fighting or playing?

How to safely keep stray cats away from my home...

I have neighborhood stray cats coming around my home going through my trash and pooping all over my yard as well as agitating my dog. Is there a safe way to keep them away from my home that actually works. I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything that works for most people. I'm looking for some kind of spray or anything that doesn't have to be applied too many times a year. Thank you in advance.

New home, flea situation, need advice.

So I moved in with my in-laws last month. They have an an acre property, five free range chickens, two small dogs and a large garden. I brought my dog when I moved in, she's a shitzu cross. I've been here a month and I'm finding fleas on everything in my house and I'm covered in bites!!!! I treat my dog, but I still find fleas on her feet and I'm finding them on my couch and I'm thinking they're in my bed now too. My dog is 10 years old and she's always slept in my bedroom, mostly on her bed but occasionally on mine. Shes always been allowed on the furniture. My in laws don't treat they're dogs because they don't seem affected by fleas, I don't know if it's a breed thing or a different fur/hair type thing.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to manage this situation. I'm new to this, in my old home treating my dog was always enough.

Side notes: (1) I'm pregnant, so I personally need to be mindful of chemicals. (2) I live in BC, Canada.

In summary: new home, with chickens and dogs on the property. My dog is now bringing fleas into the home and I'm finding them on her feet and on my couch. Shes treated, but it doesn't seem to be working well enough. Need advice.

Pick up your pets' poop! Even if it's outside in your garden

I feel awful. I was very ignorant.

We have a very large, fenced in garden where we personally don't go into as much. Our two dogs however love running outside in the garden and do their business there. My dogs are my best friends and and they sleep in my bed with me and I would do anything for them.

This morning I went outside to help the gardener with the lawnmower and I saw A LOT of poop. I felt like an idiot. I thought that if they go outside you don't have to pick it up since it's good for the plants and will decompose. Boy was I wrong. So I went and picked up 6kg of poop outside and I felt like a failure as a dog mom. I'm just lucky that the garden is very large and they only used a small area as their bathroom so they had a lot of space to still play in. I will definitely from now on pick up their poop daily.

I hope this post will help any other pet owners who also were as ignorant as me. Please pick up after your pets EVEN if it's outside on your personal property.

Best way to help increase Iron? (Dog)

So two days ago I had taken my puppy in for his first shot and the vet told me he needed more fat in his food and more iron because his iron count is really low, likely due to separation from his mother too young and whatever food the breeder had him eating from 5 week and onward. I'd been giving him goat milk since the day I bouhht him, because he was just turning seven weeks old that day and he was FAR too young to be off breast milk (but he wouldn't touch formula so I went with the next best thing, goat milk is supposed to be better for them anyway) but that aside...

I got him a different dog food today that has 16% fat, over our old dog food which only had 11% in it and I was just wondering how can I increase his iron intake? Anything like eggs or something I should be giving him in small amounts over the next few weeks to make him healthier? The food I switched him off of was Pedigree puppy chow and he's now on Rachael Ray's bright puppy food, which is much better for a husky mix anyway, it took a looot of arguing to get him on a new food, but it has been done! Now my concern lies with the iron intake. The vet said his heart rate and bloodflow while he's sleeping is the equivalent of a dog who's just run a lot, which isn't good by any means... so I just wanted to ask how I might help him get that up and to a better level.

2 Year old cat suddenly randomly meowed for the very first time?

I adopted a 2 year old cat about 3-4 months ago. During this entire 3-4 months, she NEVER made any vocal sounds, except for the occasional hiss. I honestly thought she was mute or something was wrong with her vocal cords. Tonight she randomly meowed for the first time since I adopted her. She was eating and I opened the door and she meowed and then walked away. Does anyone know what might be some reasons? Honestly there was nothing new tonight. The only thing was I installed a new cat tower for her, could that have been it?

IMHA in Dogs

Our 6 year old shepherd mix has been recently diagnosed with IMHA (immune mediated hemolytic anemia). We’re from PA, she spent the night Thursday last week in a vet hospital in Virginia where she went through numerous tests and a blood transfusion. Just looking for anyone else who’s pup might’ve had something similar. Have a lot of questions to ask. The transfusion seemed to have taken - but her blood test yesterday said she was anemic (16 on the scale). She seems like she’s doing super well though which is the confusing part. Appetite is back in full force, seems alert and focused, like her normal self. We’re getting blood tests done every day almost. She’s on 6 different meds including prednisone and that seems to me helping a lot, but don’t know if it’s quite the long term solution...if there even is one. If anyone would reach out it would be a relief.

Update on sweet stray cat that I found while on a walk + quick question

Here's a link to the previous post from a day ago

I've been having that cat stay in my bathroom with his own food and water, a litter box, a toy, and a blanket. Surprisingly, he hasn't cared much about being stuck in there and he sleeps a lot. He also eats quite a bit and drinks water like normal and uses the litterbox. Even though he's not neutered, he still hasn't sprayed anywhere thankfully, but I'll be getting him neutered very soon.

Today, I took him to a vet who gave a physical exam (other than being thin probably from not having consistent food source, the vet thinks everything else is okay), checked for a chip (he doesn't have one), and gave him a rabies vac. But when he went to draw blood to check for the main stray cat diseases, he wasn't having it and tried to bite and scratch. So the vet gave me a sedative pill to give him for next time before we go back in and get that done. So gotta keep him in the bathroom separated from my first cat another day :( My question is, he sleeps A LOT. I know it's normal for cats to sleep a lot but it seems to be what he does the vast majority of the day. Is this normal for a cat that was previously a stray and living outside or is this a bad sign? I'm in Florida so he was living on the streets in over 90-degree weather and frequent storms so I'm hoping that's why. Maybe it's also from having such a rough day at the vet but he was like that before we went to the vet, too.

Fellow pet owners: Why in the world are you talking to Reddit first about your pets' health concerns, when you should be talking to your vet first?

Forgive me if I sound annoyed. I just find myself a little... baffled, for lack of a better word? It's one thing, I feel, if you're asking for tips on say.... potty-training, or an idea for good treats or good ways to play with your pet.

But when something is wrong with your pet health-wise...Why does it seem like many owners
are coming to Reddit first to ask your questions instead of a qualified vet? This is a legit question, keep in mind, but it does indeed annoy me a little

A question on happiness and quality of life

We've all come across stray animals that used to have an owner and clearly enjoyed contact with humans. Hours ago I had the pleasure of petting a cat, an adolescent to my eyes, that got scared by me coming out of my building but came back after a few ks ks ks. I had to leave eventually, but the cat was purring and showing no signs of getting bored. It wasn't meowing either, so I'm assuming it was just enjoying the affection rather than asking for food or help.

The animals we keep as pets don't get this kind of sustained affection in the wild, do they? They might when they're babies, but after that it's just the occasional grooming lick. Dogs that we own love us more than they would ever love other dogs. We have the luxury of showing pets lots of affection, while animals really don't have the time nor the purpose to do that to each other.

These animals that seek human attention obviously see something in us that isn't present in their kin, and it goes beyond just us feeding them. If a dog or a cat is willing to spend hours with you petting them, then clearly the affection that only humans can give is something they cherish but they don't usually encounter naturally. This cat I was talking about, which I assume used to have an owner, was clearly happy that I was petting it. A wild cat would not know such things. It would not feel insecure because of a lack of affection because it would not really know affection in the first place -- it would only feel secure as long as it was healthy and there was enough food to eat.

So even if it's not "natural" in the evolutionary process that a cat should live a better life because of humans, they do seem to enjoy it. I'm thinking that being owned by humans does make an animal's life better generally speaking, but perhaps it doesn't help the species as a whole. I know I sort of answered my own question, but I wrote this wanting to hear what other people think.

Adult cat keeps peeing everywhere!

We adopted two cats at the same time over two years ago. One was a kitten and one was an adult, both females. Our kitten has no issues, however the adult has a very gross habit of peeing on things. She was fine for the first six months, then she peed on our bed. We started keeping our bedroom door closed and that was that. In our next house we decided to give it another try, but within a week she did it again. Kept the door closed, problem solved again. Fast forward to six months ago when we moved into our (hopefully) forever home and she has peed on more things than I can count: beds, a cat bed, any clothes on the floor, laundry baskets, etc. This morning I woke up to a puddle on the bare floor! She has never peed on our couches or chairs for some reason.

We used to have one litter box but recently bought another to see if that was the issue and it has just made her pee even more. She eats and drinks regularly, plays and loves attention. I’m at a loss of what to do. I’ll be making a vet appointment for her, but wanted to know if Reddit had any solutions in the mean time!

Cat died suddenly, any idea why?

He didn't eat this morning but otherwise was fine. Cat acting strange after being gone for a few days.

So one of my cats is known to wander off for 1-2 days before coming back and when he does he is perfectly normal and interacts with us like usual. He is outside majority of the time but is always willing come inside to eat and hang out. Recently, he was gone for about 6 days, and now he is showing up briefly outside a few times a day again, but for some reason he COMPLETELY ignores us when we try to call or interact with him, he doesn’t even flinch. Normally, we call him and he’ll come running from so far away you can barely see him! He’s normally super social and cuddly so I’m slightly worried about why he could be behaving so strangely. Kitten randomly peed ON BOYFRIEND/bed

I have a 3 month old kitten who has been phenomenal with litter training. She had it down the first day of being home with me at 6 weeks old (was thrown out of a vehicle onto a busy road, kitten was then brought to me). Myself and my boyfriend have been stable presences in her life since then, she has regular vet visits, toys that stimulate her chase/stalk instincts, lots of cuddle time since I'm unemployed currently and a bff dog playmate. Other than the occasional biting, she's never given us any behavioral problems until tonight.

My boyfriend and I had gone to bed and she had climbed up as per usual. All of a sudden my boyfriend tells me to turn on the light and is visible upset. Light goes on, covers go back, and the biggest urine stain I've ever seen is right where his legs were. She peed on him!! Just out of the blue!

She's my first pet as an adult so I feel responsible for her; I feel awful! Like I've messed up somehow or failed her in some way. It's like she held it in all day, the sheer quantity of it.

Do I need to go back to doing what I used to when I first got her which is sit her in the litter box and just wait till she uses it? I don't want to seclude her at night because I feel like I'm punishing her which may make the behavior worse.

Help please!!

Experienced cat owner, new kitten won't use litter box AT ALL.

I have 2 adult cats, and recently adopted a 9 week old kitten. She only pees and poos on soft, carpeted things. I've bought a new litter box just for her, and place her in it multiple times a day. She doesn't use it at all, she genuinely just starts eating it.

I've tried a lot of methods, like having her in a carrier with the litter box, put a cover on it, taken the cover off, etc. She's adjusting really well with our adult cats so I know it's not a behavioral issue.

Should I switch to a softer litter? She doesn't really like stepping into her current box. The litter I use now is a clumping, medium coarse texture, and I use a litter attractant which she likes to EAT. Shes extremely cute but I genuinely can't keep her if she doesn't use her box.

I need some unbiased eyes on this situation with my pet

Hey everyone,

Two years ago my fiancΓ© and I adopted a senior cat and she has been the absolute center of our lives ever since. Obviously she had a few issues when we got her including bad joints and some really bad breath. We took her to the vet the first week we had her and the vet said she’d usually recommend dental work but she was too old to be put under and so it probably wasn’t worth the risk (she was 15 at the time). She could still eat and she wasn’t showing any obvious signs of pain like hiding etc. she’d still attack string and play.

About 6-8 months later she was having trouble urinating so we took her to a different vet that had availability same-day. UTI; antibiotics. Easy. The doctor also noticed her teeth and recommended we do dental and advised us that she would be totally fine as her blood-work is great for her age (going on 16 now). We told her we’d discuss and see how she is over time.

About a year passes and all is good, she’s a happy kitty and never forgets to wake us up at the butt-crack of dawn to get her first feeding in. Four or so weeks ago we noticed her bum was looking a bit red and she was licking more often. We figured it could be just a sore so we decided to keep checking on it and see if it gets better or worse. Within two days we could see it was worse and my initial googling led us to anal sac disease. We called the vet and the soonest appointment they had was two weeks out. We called a few other vets and they were all the same so we kept the appointment we had since it’s closest (this is the vet that said she’d be ok for dental).

Her bum continued to get worse but it didn’t prolapse and she was still acting normal aside from the extra attempts to lick. Finally the day of the appointment came and we arrived about 5-10 minutes early and called to check in (they do curbside pickup due to COVID, which I appreciated). After we checked in we sat in the car for about 40 minutes before anyone picked her up. About 25 minutes after that we got a call from the vet saying she was wondering if we were going to show as she had been waiting for our cat (WHAT THE FUCK?!). She informed us she indeed has anal sac disease and she wished we would’ve brought her in sooner πŸ˜’. She informed us that anal sac infusion is necessary and she will need to be fully sedated for the procedure. She recommended doing the dental work as well as she believes our cat would benefit from some extractions and a good cleaning. We obliged and they sent us on our way with some cream for her bottom and an appointment for a week out.

Come surgery day we arrived again 5 minutes early and called the front desk. The front desk couldn’t find our appointment. I was starting to get really frustrated - it’s a vet clinic with maybe 5 vets, how many surgeries could they have going on when the vet were using only does surgery twice a week? After a bunch of back and forth they finally track it down. It was there the whole time... so they take our cat in and told us they’d call when they’re done and it would be around 5PM.

When we picked her up, she was obviously not excited to be in the carrier and she was pawing at her face. The doctor removed both of her top canines and you could tell she was not a happy camper. She still had some blood on her paws which I’m sure was from her pawing at herself. They gave her an anti-biotic shot the last appointment so that day they just gave us pain meds to give her twice a day for 5 days. Other than being a little loopy and having a silly new look when her top lips get stuck, she seemed great.

About 24 hours in we noticed she was starting to sleep a LOT. Like way more than usual. She probably slept 16 hours one day and only got up for food once. We had to wake her up both times to administer her pain meds. Since she wasn’t eating we decided to make another appointment and see what they had to say. Our normal vet wasn’t in so we saw someone else at the same clinic. He told us she was running a fever and had some inflammation. He gave her subcutaneous fluids, an appetite stimulant, and an anti-inflammatory and had us on our way. When we got home she didn’t eat for a bit but then after an hour or so she was a fiend. She ate more than I’ve ever seen! We were finally starting to feel some relief.

After about a day we noticed she was still acting a little weird. We have stairs all over the house so she can climb up on the couch and things without needing to jump; she was up and down and up and down all day. She couldn’t seem to get comfortable and wouldn’t sleep. Worse yet, she was walking a bit wobbly and kept running into things — she doesn’t have the most agile body in the world at her age, but it was different. What really got my alarm bells going was seeing in her eye that her iris was just ever so slightly pale. Again, we called the vet. Neither of the doctors we had seen were in so another vet asked us to send a picture. She said it looked fine but if were worried to bring her in as the vet that did the surgery will be in. We booked it.

Checking in again was a huge pain in the ass and the front desk people were again dismissive but at least they picked her up on time. The vet called us and said she still has a fever and has no idea why and that she doesn’t know why her eye is the way it is. She gave us a prescription for prednisone drops 2x daily and told us to see an ophthalmologist she recommends. This was on Saturday, so we booked an appointment for Monday and gave her the drops in the meantime. The person that then gave the cat back was absolutely horrid with how she treated our cat but I digress.

Today we brought our cat in to see the ophthalmologist who said it’s her opinion that the dental work possibly out bacteria in her blood stream that infected her eye and she has a possible infection in her eye. She wanted to sedate her (not completely though) and take a sample of the fluid in her eye via a needle and send it to be tested. The results can take up to 5 days so we will start an antibiotic tonight. We agreed and left for an hour or so for them to do what they needed to. I explained to the vet that I’m not extremely happy and that I have reservations because everything so far seems be that the vet says everything will be fine, it’s standard procedure, and nothing has turned out quite fine; she assured me she does this all the time and not to worry. An hour later we get a call that even as sedated as our cat is she doesn’t feel she can safely go through with the procedure. The options are to try again another day under even more sedation, or just see how the antibiotic goes. Regardless, she is now likely going to have permanent sight-loss even if we do treat her eye correctly. At this point we’re just trying to keep the eye.

Reddit, I’m fucking frustrated. I feel like the vet should’ve known the dangers of doing a dental procedure on a 17 year old cat and should’ve been able to explain that better. Moreover I feel the office has treated us and my cat poorly and they haven’t acknowledged that any of these issues are anything but mere coincidence. What the hell do I do?

Kitten keeps biting wires, appears to like the taste of bitter spray, what can I use instead as a deterrent?

My kitten of 10 weeks old currently has a habit of biting on wires. He has plenty of toys to play with and I've blocked off most of the wires with cardboard. Any wires I cant block off I've sprayed with a bitter spray I bought. He was deterred at first, but after a bit he continued to bite the wires he had access to and got the bitter spray off the wires and onto him. Is there something else I could use instead of the spray to deter him?

Cat-proof bedding and couch

I’m going to be buying a new couch soon, and would like one my cat won’t destroy. She has a nasty habit of using couches as scratching posts. My old couch was a hand-me-down so I wasn’t too bothered, but I’d like a new one to fare better. Any recommendations?

I’m also looking to buy a new duvet cover for my bed, as she’s destroyed my current ones. I would love some suggestions on cat-resistant fabric.

Would taking my indoor-outdoor cat to my family’s cabin for a week or so be bad?

Mischa, my indoor-outdoor cat loves being outside. I used to try to let her out during mornings only but now she sort of hangs outside and around the house during the day and always comes home in the evenings or whenever I call her in.

I trust her a lot, but at the end of the day she’s still a cat- I fear that when I bring her to the cabin she will want to go outside, and since she’s unfamiliar with the area she might get lost or hurt.

Is it worth it for one week? Does anyone else have experience with travelling with their cats? Thanks for any input!

dog or reptile ?

heya ! I've been wondering for a few days about getting either an reptile or a dog

my dad promised i would get a reptile on my birthday ( bearded dragon or leopard gecko ) or he could get me a dog tomorrow from a ebay-like website where a dog is given for free

i forget sometimes to feed my guinea pig at time ( i feed him everyday tough ) so i am worried i would forget to take the dog to walk, or, give him food at time.

on the reptile side, they can live without worries if they don't get fed a whole week ( i would never let them this much without food ) so i don't have to worry every day

i loved dogs since i was born and had 2 cats ( both disapeared ) and 3 ( 1 at grandparents, 1 dead, 1 given to someone else ) on the reptile's side i loved reptiles since i was born the same way, but dicovered they can be usual, non-exotic pets so i don't have any experience

Quick Survey About Pets

Hey guys,

I apologize if this is not allowed here, but I have to get at least 30 responses for a stats project, and with COVID it is obviously harder to do now. It is just a quick 3 question survey about pets. No pressure, but if you end up filling it out, thank you so much and I really appreciate it!

Fecal and Urinary Incontinent Dog

I have a 4 year old dog that had IVDD surgery in February. When he had the surgery we were not told nor did we know ourselves that the dog would be incontinent. I take him 2 times a week to a physical therapy facility, and he can walk, but he can’t go to the bathroom on his own or jump. I have not had success using diapers because the anal region of skin becomes extremely irritated and bloody when it doesn’t have proper air flow. The vet recommended to not use diapers. I love my dog a lot and am lucky I am working from home during covid but when I return I don’t see how I will be able to express his bladder every 6 hours. There is usually a lot of shit everywhere and lot of laundry required. This morning I gave him a bath and when he shook after I took him out he flung 20 pieces of shit all over my hands and feet and anything in the bathroom near by. Does anyone else live this way?

Has anyone euthanized their dog because of this? I don’t really know what to do.

Roommate refuses to control his cat.

I moved into an apartment with a friend who has a cat, he had mentioned giving his cat to his sister and it wasn't going to be around long. He's since had a change of heart. Anyway, the cat is a nightmare. Jumps inside of our coats that are hanging on the coat rack ripping them up in the process. There's cat hair on all the counters and the dinner table, my girlfriend finds cat hair in her food, he knocks over the trash can and is always jumping on the counter. Anything left on the counter gets messed with and thrown off. And we're just told to not put things there. Sorry, but I see nothing wrong with leaving my car keys on the counter next to the door. Or other things. Control the damn cat so he doesn't do this shit.

Now I've always made it clear I'm not fond of cats, I've lived with several in the past and haven't had issues, but I just don't really like cats. My girlfriend(who also lives with us) likes cats but has a mild allergy and she too is tired of the cat jumping on everything.

We have a dog and when I am not home, the dog is in its kennel. The dog stays in our room lost of the time unless we are out in the living room, then I will let it out. I've always considered it a courtesy to prevent my pet from being a problem. This doesn't translate well to him. It's difficult to let the dog out during the day when the cat is out because all they do is play fight. Constantly. Sometimes the dog instigates, other times the cat, I don't mind it all the time but if like to enjoy my living room without the two of them having a WWE match.

I've talked to my roommate about it because he keeps the cat out of his room while he is at work, shuts his door so the cat cannot go inside. I would prefer the cat stay in his room while he is gone but he says he doesn't want that because he doesn't want the cat messing with the blinds and he doesn't want the litter box and food in there.

Truthfully he doesn't really like the cat. He tells me multiple times that he only likes it when it's sleeping beside him at night, otherwise he is always complaining about the cat. He never plays with the cat, has never attempted to train it("It's a cat, you can't train it") but he refuses to take responsibility. The cat does other things like crawl inside the couch and while the roommate acknowledges that he could do things to prevent unwanted behavior, he just doesn't want to do it.

I don't know how to get him to see our side of things. He knows his cat is a nuisance, he admits it. That's why he doesn't keep him in his room, better to be a nuisance to everyone than to just him. I don't know what to do. This cat is making me despise cats even more.

What’s a good sign that a dog should be declawed?

I normally don’t consider declawing animals but my sweet little chihuahua has had a lot of trouble with them, particularly the duclaw. The pads often get damaged and bleed when she’s running around outside for fun (especially likes chasing my RC cars) but last time what’s strange. Her duclaw nail got ripped off leaving the quick/nail bed more or less perfectly in tact. Is that unusual? Just wondering if anyone else has answers before her vet appt.

Worried my two year old girl cat is doomed for cancer.

I adopted her last week and she is getting spayed this week. I have gone down a Google rabbit hole and am terrified she is doomed to get breast cancer since she has had numerous heat cycles. I feel like it's a given it will happen and I am scared. Can anyone please comfort or reassure me?

I have had two cats growing up that were spayed well after kitten litters who lived super long and healthy lives so maybe I am over thinking this.

I guess I really just want kind words and reassurance since Google already laid the facts.

without developing issues or complications. my cat needs to be spayed tomorrow at 2 pm and I was told not to feed her starting at 8 pm last night in preparation for anesthesia. that's 18 hours without food.... that seems a little fucking drastic? probably more considering she won't get home until probably 3 pm and she might not be able to eat food right away. it's 5 am now. what should I do?

Ducks as pets in an apartment?

It’s been a long while I want a pet. I live alone and don’t have many/any real friends. I can’t have a cat or a dog due to apartment rules. I’m thinking of getting a little chick or a day old duckling. I’m getting controversial information on the Internet about them, so could you wonderful people tell me: 1. Could I keep ducks indoors? I do have a small garden but there are predators and other people around and it wouldn’t be easy leaving them out. 2. Do ducks definitely need a puddle or not? I’m reading different things about this. 3. Most importantly, what could I do when I’m traveling? Could I leave them alone say in my corridor+bathroom while I’m gone? How long would they be ok? A few days or a few weeks? 4. Anything else I should know?

Sad(?) new puppy. Help!

Hello! I recently got my 2 month old Corgi puppy. He's been with me for 3 days. He went here by train and he was in his cage for a long time so when I let him roam around my living room he was ecstatic, running around, barking, being really playful and all. He also eats normally. The next 2 days, he started eating less than usual. He would eat at 6.30 in the morning and will go on without eating his dogfood until the evening. But if I give him treats or something other than dogfood, he'll eat it. He also seems less lively than the first day. I asked the breeder about it and she said that he actually eats a lot and will run and jump around when he's out of his cage. I'm scared there's something I did wrong. I looked up a dog's body language and my puppy was scratching his ears, yawning, and shaking off his body and it means that he is stressed.

Is it possible that he's just sad because he got seperated from his mum and his brothers/sisters? And he's also in a new place with strangers thats why he's been acting like that and he'll be fine after a few days when he adjusts to his surroundings?

Thankyou.

My cat pees on only my things

My husband and I have 2 cats. There is my cat a momma's boy and my husband's cat a daddy's girl. It just kinda ended up that way. It was funny because he picked out the boy and I picked out the girl.

We got our girl Nova first around December of 2017 so she was a year old. We got Eclipse our boy the next September of 2018 when he was about 6 months old. They had no issues with each other besides the boy constantly wanting to play and her not wanting to. But she still rubs up against him and is not fearful or uncomfortable around him at all.

Around fall 2019 I started staying at home fulltime. I became disabled and could no longer work. It was about this time when the behavior started. Let me preface this although Eclipse sees me directly as his human and Nova sees my husband has hers we both have great relationships with each other's cat. When my husband is on dayshift Nova will sleep in my room and take naps with me. I give her lots of pets and I am the sole provider of food and I take care of the litterboxes.

So. Whenever there is anything on the floor that smells like me, Nova will pee on it. A shirt, a blanket anything. She pees and poops in her own litterbox as well with no issues. But she is constantly peeing on anything that I happen to leave on the floor. My husband's clothes on the floor are fine but anything that I've worn or smells like me is a target. Easy answer? Don't leave anything on the floor. But I know that I want to know why this is happening. We have a great relationship.

I'm worried it has something to do with Eclipse. He is obsessed with me and will not leave my side. I cannot be in a different room than him with a door closed or within 3 minutes he will start crying at the door. And his behavior of jumping on her I'm starting to suspect may be more possessive of me than trying to play. Whenever we left them both alone before Corona we would usually find both of them sleeping together. So I'm starting to think his "wanting to play" is more "Get away from my human" though he is not aggressive at all just jumpy. No hissing or anything.

I hope someone can help. I love Nova so much and I just want to fix whatever is going on in our relationship. I would also appreciate not having to wash everything of mine.

Would it be humane to have a seahorse?

But really more like two seahorses so my one seahorse doesn’t get lonely. Also some fish. Maybe a starfish. And coral.

I’ve always really loved them and I think they are just the cutest. I love fishies too. My 19th birthday is coming up and I’d like to just ask for a really huge tank and seahorses. I like having animals and plants to take care of and make frens with. As far as I’m concerned the only downside to having fish/seahorses is that they are forbidden from boops 🚫

I’ve seen a lot of different things online about how humane it is to keep a seahorse. So I’m just a bit unsure, and I would never want to keep an animal as a pet if it’s not humane. Please feel free to be blunt if it’s not!!

If having a seahorse as a pet is not inhumane, what should I do to endure it has the very best quality of life possible?

I saw a minimum 30 gallons for tank size, so I’d probably be aiming for 50 gallons. I also have a cat, so that’s a thing.

Also, about what cost would I be looking at when all said and done?

Thanks in advance for helping me in my seahorse mission ❤️

My cats won't stop fighting with each other.

My family owns six siamese cats. These cats are mostly from the same bloodline and they used to get along well.

We have these two adult male cats named Muffin and Donut, Donut is the father of Muffin, and they used to get along with each other, but lately all they do is fight with each other. Right now, whenever Muffin sees Donut he hisses and Donut will fight him.

And we have an adult female cat named Cookie, and she is angry at her father named Oreo, she used to get along with him but after she gave birth to her own kittens, she's always trying to attack Oreo whenever she sees him. However, she's really nice to other male cats. She's only aggressive towards Oreo and we do not know why. Her kittens are four months old now and she doesn't care about the kittens anymore so we gave them to the trusted people we know who want to take care of the kittens. Cookie is doing fine and doesn't mind it but she's still mad at Oreo.

All of our cats used to get along with each other. Why are they fighting now?

It's been a month and a half now and in order to prevent fights, we try to separate them and we switch them every few hours. This is not an effective solution because we have to constantly switch them between the kitchen, living room or bedroom and we always have to be sure that they don't see each other.

Our other cats are chill, It's just Donut vs. Muffin + Cookie vs. Oreo who are specifically mad at each other, They are okay with the other cats.

Why are they mad at each other? What can we do to solve this problem?

Dog too afraid to go to the basement.

One of our dogs, Athena, is about a year and a half old. We also have an 11 year old dog, Tommy. Athena is petrified of the basement, but has no history of abuse or anything. She has no problems going up and down the top floor stairs, but she refuses to even go near the basement door if someone else is there. Tommy has no issue going to the basement, and Athena sees Tommy come to the basement regularly - so she should see that there's nothing to be afraid of.

We've tried luring her with treats but as soon as we get to the entrance of the basement she refuses to even come a metre close to us.

Do we carry her to the stairs? Carry her downstairs completely?

Small animal sanctuary survives in a very cruel and poor world

Hello good people! Thank you for reading my message. We (me and my wife) are writing you from that small, unknown country on the Eastern Balkan called Serbia. Most people don't even know that countries like this even exist in Europe. However we are here, living in this small, forgotten region with all these non-advanced people caring very little even for themselves and their families, not to speak about animals. But animals do exist here, and they live very miserable lives, especially farm animals. It's very hard to find an animal that you can actually save from torture because there aren't any standards for keeping "cattle" at all. There are laws for treating animals, but in practice nobody is obligated to respect them. So It's very hard to even save farm animals, not to mention that some animal welfare associations here (they exist only in big cities) are only interested in saving cats and dogs .So my wife and I decided to move to the countryside and help animals as much as we can do physically and financially . In a year, we succeeded to save one goat, pig, two chickens and sheep (you can see some of their pictures below) . They live very happy lives now with our dogs and cats. We wish this will grow into one big animal sanctuary one day, even though in our hopes and dreams we are big anyway. We decided to fully dedicate ourselves to them and to the other animals that we could possibly save in the future. We get on ourselves and haven't asked for anyone's help except some family members. We thought about future of our small sanctuary and decided to ask anyone who is free will to support us. Also some good people told us It will be good to make Patreon and Paypal account and Youtube channel (you can see all the links here) By supporting us you will help us to make supplies for our animals, and the animals we will save in the future

Cat won't stop bringing me presents! I'm pregnant, help!

Serious question. My cat was adopted from the humane society, he had been an outdoor cat his whole life before we got him. He uses the doggy door to go in and out, but he stays in the yard. To me, that's all fine and well. What ISN'T fine and well is he keeps bringing dead animals in or around the house. It's not just birds. I've found 2 baby bats, today was a frog, and mice. If we keep him locked in the house, he will piss all over everything. I mean EVERYTHING. He's a good cat, I love him, but I'm seriously wondering if I need to get him declawed. I know it's inhumane, but I don't want to get rid of him, and there's no "retraining" the bad behaviors out of a cat. He's a neutered, yearish old male. He is the most loving, docile cat I've ever had. Getting rid of him isn't an option. My kids are attached and so am I. But I'm pregnant, I don't want to deal with this... Not to mention I'm highly bothered by the damage he's doing to the wildlife around here, especially the bats.

should i receive a complimentary sedation for my cat or am i being a karen for thinking this way?

hi, my 3y/o female DSH was going to the litter box about 5 times an hour and not doing anything while in there so i figured she had a uti. i took her to the vet for her appt at 10:30 am and was told she would be ready by 1:30 latest. it was 2pm and i had not received a call to pick her up yet so i called just for them to tell me that hey havent even gotten a chance to get to her yet. i was a little confused but figured they were just busy. they then call me 30 minutes later to say shes "way too aggressive" to be looked at and that she requires sedation to receive a urinalysis. i was eager to get to the bottom of her issue so i agreed to the sedation even tho i was slightly irritated that its taken them this long to tell me this. obviously my cat is going to be on edge after being in a random place, smelling a bunch of other animals and not having any food. fast forward another 30 minutes, they call me again to tell me that the sedation was basically pointless because the vet tech didnt notice that she peed in the kennel so her bladder was empty...so my cat got sedated for no reason which isn't ideal and i paid for the sedation ($180) for no reason. when i picked her up and paid i asked the woman at the front desk if i would be able to get another sedation free of charge considering that if they had noticed that she peed then the vet wouldnt have done the urinalysis (those were his words when he called me to tell me he couldnt preform it) she said i would have to wait until the manager on duty for the day was back. they ended up just sending me home w antibiotics which helped for about a week but now shes frequenting the litter box often again. i want to get a urinalysis again so i can get to the bottom of this issue. is my mindset wrong or should they sedate her free of charge? thank you <3

I found one of the stray kittens that hangs out around my house dead today and I feel like total crap. My heart is heavy and I feel so guilty.

There's a couple of stray kittens that have been hanging out around my house so we give them food here and there and make sure they have water too when they come by.

Well today we found one of them had a broken leg :( We took him to the vet immediately where I was told I should consider adopting him which I did. :)

All the excitement went upside down though when going back to the vet to pick up my new kitten, I saw one of his siblings dead on another street as if it had gotten ran over.

I'm depressed now and I feel like a piece of shit and I feel so guilty and I just needed to get this off my chest. I can't stand witnessing dead animals especially babies. I know it's not my fault but I feel so guilty right now and I don't know if this feeling will ever go away.

Btw sorry for randomly putting this post here. I just really needed to get this out of me and I have no one to turn to right now...

Found sweet cat that is most likely a stray (un-neutered male) and could use some advice.

Tonight's been a weird night; I posted about this earlier in the rescue cats subreddit but didn't get responses since it's not an active sub. I hope this post isn't breaking any rules. I was on a walk maybe half a mile away from my house and this very thin, very young-looking cat walked up to me to be petted. He has his testicles. I'm not a good judge of age but he looks like he's not an adult yet in his face. I carried him back to my apartment and put out food and he frantically started eating without stopping. I already have a cat (female, a little over a year old, spayed) and I put her in the other room during all this. On my previous post, I was feeling so sad for him that I was thinking of finding ways to keep him but I realize even keeping him inside my apartment for one night could be bad as I'd need to keep him in the bathroom to keep him separated from my cat, and there's the risk of him spreading diseases to my cat or spraying in the apartment. So I put a soft cat carrier with a blanket and food out on my balcony and he's been sleeping there ever since. I think the best course of action would be to see if I can get him to a vet to treat any diseases and try helping him get a forever home but I've never done this before (my cat has been an indoor cat all her life and isn't a rescue) so I could use any advice y'all can give me. Thank you

8 week year old kitten has sneezing fits and woke up today with a cloudy half-open eye with gunk

hey everyone! I just adopted a kitten from a rescue shelter and he’s the best! He seemed fine we got him, but now he keeps having sneezing fits and his left eye has me wiping funk away from it.

He’s still eating and drinking. After I wiped away his funk we even played for awhile and he seemed perfectly normal. I just feel awful because his eyes keeps squinting and I can see how watery it keeps getting.

Should I take him to the vet now? I have one scheduled, but they’re totally booked until next Monday (July 6). I have no issues with taking him to an ER vet, but I also don’t want to put him through that kind of trauma if I’m just being an overbearing, new animal parent.

Any advice would be great! His fecal is solid, he doesn’t seem to be running a fever and I don’t think he seems lethargic? (He does sleep an awful lot)!

Neutering changed my cats personality

We took in a stray cat, about 6 months old. He was very chill, would sit beside us all the time, and would let you pick him up. He was like this for a couple weeks. Then we got him neutered and he’s the opposite. Full of energy and always playing, but also very bitey. You cannot pet him for long, and only if he decides to come to you. He will bite otherwise. Forget about licking him up.

Is this permanent? Will he mellow out and be a calm cat again? Some hypotheses are that he’s now more comfortable in our home so he’s being his true self. Another is that without all the hormones in his body, he’s back to being a kitten.

My dog got put down today, and I would really appreciate some positive comments about how he wasn’t scared or thought we abandoned him.

Lucky was a little terrier-poodle mix. Small little guy but cute as a button. He was abused by several people and passed from family to family to family. I never understood why. He was the sweetest dog and only acted out because that’s how he knew to protect himself from harm. He was decently old when I came into his life, but he and I always had a bond. In 2016 I was hit as a pedestrian by a car and was badly injured. As I was healing at home, this dog stayed on my bed by my side essentially all day and night. He was my friend and protector. It was not my decision to put him down today and I am a lot worse off than I thought. I didn’t go with him to the vets because I wouldn’t have been able to let him go and because of the virus, I wouldn’t have been able to hold his paw as he passed anyway. So that’s why I’m so sad, because 1) he was with strangers, and 2) I just really want him to live on spiritually in some way so maybe one day I can see him again. I’m not religious but I would love to hear some proof of dogs spirits existing so I can feel better. I am truly heartbroken and miss him already so much.

HomeoPet UTI Plus Urinary Tract Infection for Cats

Has anyone had any luck with this product? I've read great things online. Before anyone comments to stop trying to treat UTI's at home and take my cat to the vet, I have and despite giving her antibiotics, I notice every now and then she frequents the litter box a little too much with not much being done while in there :( she is very playful and eats normally.

Dog food question

Hi!! I recently adopted a dog from the shelter. She had a respiratory infection from the shelter and was fairly lethargic so at the advice of the vet I had been feeding her bland chicken and rice while she takes her antibiotics and gets back to health. Now she is more healthy (still has a couple days of antibiotics left but her symptoms are gone) so I switched her back to dog food. She won’t touch it. I don’t have the time or money to make my dog chicken and rice everyday she needs to eat regular dog food. How can I get her to eat it?

Dad recently died, my city is being is the next biggest hotspot for Covid, I'm utterly stressed and my dog keeps peeing on the carpet/crate daily. I want to give her to a rescue because she's making my life even more stressful. Thoughts?

Had her for nearly 10 years and I'm at my wits end. The dog is making an utterly stressful time even more stressful. I think it's time to let her go.I hate feeling that way but I truly do. I feel so guilty but I can't take care of all these things at once. My mental health is going out of whack.

Dog chasing our new cat

So I have four cats and two dogs total. Three of the cats and one of the dogs we have had for 10+ years and have never had any behavioral issues. About 3-4 years ago we adopted a 5 year old pitbull. She got along with all the cats and my other dog perfectly fine. There have never been any issues with chasing, biting, barking, etc.

Now 2 months ago we adopted a male adult cat. He gets along with the three original cats. We guess he has never been around dogs before because it became clear he is fearful of them. When first adopted he was kept separate from the dogs but when he heard them outside the room he was in he would begin hissing. When he was introduced to the dogs he would hiss and swat at them. My older dog did not react much other than some barking which has subsided.

Now my younger dog, the 5 year old pitbull, acted afraid of him for a few weeks and wouldn’t even look at him. We guess the cat pushed her too far because now she will snap/bark at the cat and chase him when she sees him.

I have seen the dog chase him unprovoked but I also see him swat at her unprovoked. Our biggest concern is the dog getting a hold of him and hurting the cat. We started feeding the dog and cat near each other to let them get used to one another. They’ll sit there and eat without any problems and generally they can be in the same room without fighting but if they walk past one another then the issues usually start again.

The past few weeks I’ve been hoping they can work if out and get used to each other but things are getting worse. The dog is already on Prozac so I will be making an appointment with her vet to see if she has any recommendations. In the meantime I wanted to see if anyone here had some input. I’ve never had to deal with behavior issues so I’m lost on this. Rehoming either of them is not an option.

Pet regret???

Hi! So.. I recently rescued two pet rats and I was super excited about it at first and now I’m on day 2 and I have this overwhelming dread that I made a mistake... They are very sweet, but I’m stressed about them smelling up my apartment even thought I plan on cleaning their bedding every two days. I guess I just fear it’s going to be more work than I thought.. What should I do? Has anyone owned rats/mice and also been able to maintain a clean/good smelling apartment? Should I just wait and see if this regret subsides? Pls help. I need some advice.

First cat may have URI- how much will a vet visit + meds cost?

We have some money set aside for treatment- we adopted an adult cat 2 weeks ago who has started showing symptoms of URI (one eye has green discharge and light sensitivity, sniffles and sneezes occasionally). We want to get him checked out but are trying to estimate the cost and see if it is above our budget.

The other cats at the shelter we got him from have URI’s apparently- so that also makes us think that is what it is.

We are in the Midwest, if that helps. Thanks!

Advice - Dog Injury.

1-2 weeks ago Rosco (5 year old medium sized dog) leapt over the couch and landed on the metal door of his crate. It looked like it was a really bad fall, he even bent the bars. But I looked him over and he seemed fine.

The other day I was playing with him and I playfully pushed him and he yelped in pain. Since then he’s yelped a few more times, usually when moving, so it’s definitely not a fluke.

He lets me touch him without crying out. He doesn’t have a limp and he will still run and jump around as if nothing is wrong, so I don’t feel like it’s super serious, but I am concerned none the less. Should he see a vet?

(Seems like the pain is around the front shoulders, back or neck.)

Help! Cat peeing on dog bed

I've had my cat since he was a kitten. He's 3 years old and this has never been an issue. My dog bed was getting old, so I went and got a new one. At week later my cat peed on it, he's never peed outside the litter box before. I sprayed it with an odor remover, and then washed the inside and outside. The next day he did the same thing. I repeated the spray and wash and then sprayed it again with odor remover. Since then, I've either kept closed in the 2nd bedroom or out in the living room with me (normally it's kept in the bedroom). Today I left it Left it in the bedroom, and Just went in there to grab something and saw he peed on it once again.

Does anyone had advice on how to stop this? I threw away that bed because the inner lining can't go through the washing machine again, it started to break after the 2nd wash.

I want to get my dog another bed, and we'll get one with a waterproof liner but still don't want the cat peeing on it all the time.

Adopted a 4 year old cat!

We adopted a beautiful 4 year old cat yesterday. She's a little on the chubbier side so we did a lot of research and decided to try the hill science dry food. She will not eat it. My bf said he has heard good things about blue buffalo. But I am pretty sure I read an article in the last year about cats and dogs getting sick and puking blood after eating it. I cant find the article now. Has anyone heard of something like this? Or has a good recommendation for a domestic short hair calico? We want to get her to a healthy weight to avoid any heart/health issues. This is my first pet so I want to make sure I take care of her!!! TIA!!!

Moving to first apartment, it doesnt allow pets but I have a guinea pig. Should I risk it?

Heya looking for some advice here. My boyfriend and I have lived in a garage of a house for about two years with about 7 room mates (thats right SEVEN) We are REALLY looking forward to move out and discovered the perfect apartment. But it doesnt allow pets, the listing says “Absolutely no pets”. My guinea pig is a caged animal, he literally cannot make property damage, he doesnt stink and doesnt make a lot of noise. Should I risk it? Ive never lived in an apartment before, so im unsure of what could really happen to us if we were to get busted. We havent asked the landlord about the policy and if it extends to caged animals in fear that they’ll say yes and be in even more trouble. The apartment itself is in a kinda crappy location, but it’s quite large for the price, it’s one bedroom 800 sq feet. Most apartments around here for the same price are about 300 sq feet and a plain studio (We even viewed one that didnt have a KITCHEN!). The apartment is a 10 min walk to my work. Since it’s a one bedroom we can easily just move him to the bedroom if a landlord ever needed to check in for some reason. The application fee for this place is 100$, and id hate to waste that so considering all of the factors what should we do? Have any of you guys ever gotten away with sneaking a pet into an apartment? How often do landlords have to check apartments (if they even do that at all..?). Or would it just be worth it to get a crappier place that does allow pets..? Hopefully this is ok for the sub!
