My mom and my cat mutually dislike each other

New female golden chinchilla - persian mix. Very gentle and loves to be held and given pats. Doesnt bite, small claws and rarely even makes a fuss.

I was more of a hands on care taker to my cat. Mom was scared to death. She's been living with us for only a day and has warmed up to the house and me, she always asks for pets.

Different story with my mom though. Shes too scared to touch the cat without gloves and the cat doesnt like it when when its picked up by my mom. How do i convince my mom that she wont rip her finger off? And how do i help my cat to not dislike my mother?

Dog Harness

I hope I’m allowed to ask a question? I have a small dog and I’m trying to find a proper fitting for a harness. She doesn’t fall into the “normal “ sizing categories. Does anyone know of a company that does this instead of x-tra small , etc..? I’ve actually looked at Amazon and online but I couldn’t find anything.

My cat licked my arm, while I was wearing both bug spray and calamine spray (because of mosquitos). Should I worry?

Hello, there’s a lot of mosquitos out, so I have been wearing bug spray on and off (active ingredient: picaridin 15%) AND calamine spray to treat my bites.

My cat noticed the curious smell coming off me so licked my arm and instantly jumped back in disgust and started touching trying to wipe her mouth/nose area from the taste.

Should I worry about this? Is one lick enough to kill her? What should I look out for?

She seems normal right now. I put water over her mouth to wipe and gave her treats to take away from the taste. But when should I worry? So worried!

Thanks for your time!

My first iguana died yesterday and I need to get this off my chest

For context, about 2 months ago my dad brought in an red iguana that his friend gave him, and we decided to name him Blanka, as in the street fighter character. Since we didn't have enough money to buy a basking light for him, we used to leave him on the balcony while he basks for about half an hour.

Everyday, I would bring him back inside and spray him with a spray can filled with water if he showed any sign of overheating. Yesterday I was so fed up with schoolwork and online classes that I forgot to bring him back in. He died from overheating on our own balcony.

I feel so horrible, I felt as if I should've bring him inside and he would still be alive. I feel bad for him, he's been in our house for 2 months and I've already felt more of a bond towards him than any of my family member, and then he just dies in the most slow and painful way possible. I feel like I should've at least checked on him, but I forgot and now he's gone. I already miss him even though he's only been here for 2 months.

This might sound dumb, but I made a promise to myself that I would take care of him till the very end. And that's why when he died, it felt much more personal towards me

I wish I checked on him, I wish I did something as little as look to the balcony then I would've known he was overheating.

But now I can't do anything, he's already gone and I miss him so much

For the last couple of days, I have been feeling immense guilt about when he died. I still think that if it weren't for me forgetting about him, he would still be here.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a sob story meant for you to upvote or leave an award, but I just needed to get this off of my chest because everyone in my family just says I should stop being sad so much about an iguana.

I'm sorry if I made you upset or that now you think that I am an incompetent pet owner. And I don't blame you for thinking that. I'm just so sad that he's gone and the fact I could've done something about it really makes me think it's my fault that he's dead now

Help! One cat started growling and hissing at the other. They were fine this morning. I don’t want them to hurt each other.

I have two cats, both boys. One is almost 3 named Rocky and the other just turned 1 named Ferdinand. The older one is neutered but because of COVID we haven’t been able to get our other cat neutered yet. Idk if this is relevant but idk if it would have something to do with this.

Rocky has a lot of anxiety when we adopted him. He would randomly bite at and scratch us. Since we got Ferdinand last December, however, he’s been much more calm and snuggly. He’s always been so affectionate towards Ferdinand, and loves to snuggle, groom, and play with him. Occasionally they’ll hiss at one another a little but that’s normal cat stuff.

Tonight though was different. Rocky wasn’t just hissing at Ferdinand, he was growling, spitting, baring his teeth. He didn’t stop. They were fine earlier today and later when I got home from work. I went to refill their automatic feeder (Rocky had been refusing to eat if we weren’t there and would wake us up in the middle of the night for food, and Ferdinand would try to scavenge food all the time, so structure was better for them) before mealtime and Rocky started being so aggressive and angry towards Ferdinand. Idk what he would have done if I hadn’t separated them and taken Ferdinand to my room.

My fiancé has also been away for work the last few days. He’s Rocky’s favorite, so he might be missing him too. Still, this sort of behavior has never happened before for Rocky.

I’m afraid that when I put them together again they might hurt each other, that I might have to choose between them, that Rocky’s anxious again and I’ve lost the snuggle ham he’s become, that my boys don’t love each other anymore, that all the snuggles and kisses are gone.

Need advice on adopting an elderly cat with a crazy cat at home

Hello everyone!

I work at an animal shelter, and we just got in a cat that is estimated to be 18-20 years old. she is the sweetest, most beautiful cat I’ve ever seen, and as soon as our vet told me he strongly suspects kidney failure, I knew I had to take her home. So we’re running bloodwork and shooting some x-rays this weekend, and as long as she’s not suffering or is in pain (to the point where humane euthanasia is the only option), we will be adopting her.

So I know that I won’t have much time with her, and I’m okay with that, I just want her to live out the rest of her life comfortably. But the problem is, I have a large elderly bully and a huge cat that is almost a year old (both foster fails 😂), and they’re used to playing with each other. Salem, our cat, plays rough and when other cats tell him to stop, he only stops for a little while, before going back and terrorizing them again.

We’re expecting to keep Wednesday (the new lady) completely separated and she’ll stay in my mom’s portion of our apartment, but I was wondering if there’s any way my cat can learn to leave her alone and not pester her! I would love for her to be able to exist in the rest of the apartment without me having to separate her from my cat. he is 13 lbs (not fat, just long and muscular) while she is 7 lbs and very fragile. we have fostered many many times, dogs, cats, bottle babies and adults, and have gone through the whole slow introductions with closed doors and everything, but Salem is just playful with everyone and doesn’t seem to know his size or strength.

Sorry for the rant, thank you guys in advance :)

Have the opportunity to get a Blue Heeler, but the owner wants me to take the puppy at 4.5 weeks old.

From everything I've read, 8 weeks should be the bare minimum. I brought this up to him and he says the last litter (this poor mom is only two is and is on her second litter) left at 5 weeks and they were fine, and after four weeks she doesn't like to nurse them anymore.

Either he's BSing me because he wants to get rid of them, or he's not. Either way, this doesn't sound good.

Should I walk away, or are there things I can do to mitigate the early separation to make sure the puppy is taken care of. I'm just afraid if I walk away it will just go to some random person who has no interest in spending real time or money taking care of her.

Cats and dogs getting along

I have 2 dogs and a cat we got a couple years ago that don’t get along very well. The cat has been living in our basement to avoid the dogs and we often let him out of the house. The youngest dog is 3 and he seems pretty clueless to the cat, like he acknowledges that it exists but he doesn’t seem to care for it much. The other dog is 5 and the complete opposite. He is addicted to the cat and is usually waiting at the bottom of the steps to the basement because he knows where the cat is. He and the cat have gotten to each other, usually the cat just runs but if it comes down to it he would try to attack the dog. The dog has killed a couple groundhogs and a bird instead of retrieving them when we took him for hunting training so I’m worried what he would do if he found the cat. My main question is what can we do to get them used to each other? I’ve seen a few guides saying put them in the same room in separate crates and let them sit for a while which we’ve done but not often or consistently. I also wonder if the age of the pets would make it harder since they weren’t raised with another animal of a different species in the house.

How can I make an older cat comfortable with claw trimming?

Adopted a cat recently, around 6 years old. This means that I haven’t been able to get him comfortable with holding his paws since a young age and I can’t really routinely trim his claws. What’s a good way to get him comfortable with the process and handling his paws? Same as with a kitten?

My two male guinea pigs started fighting a lot. Is it a good idea to have them totally separated for 1 week?

I have 2 male guinea pigs, they are adolescents now, one was noticeably older when we got them so at the beginning he was the dominant one. However, as they've been growing up, the younger one also started showing territorial dominance, so they have begun fighting on and off. There'd be 1 week of total peace, then 1 week of constant fighting, so we started practicing separating them by putting one of them in the cage and the other outside, and they took turns. Two days ago, while they were both outside, they jumped at each other quite ferociously and the older one got badly bitten by the younger one, there was blood, and it was the second time he got bitten, but the first time there was no blood. So I put the cage in another room and the older one there, so they don't see, hear or smell each other. Yesterday I re-introduced them and they started fighting immediately, so I was like "Nope, back to the cage". Now, I want to go to my parents' for a week, and my boyfriend to his parents', and we were wondering if it'd be a good idea to each take one of the guinea pigs with us. Or is there a good chance they'll fight even more when they get back?

(P.S. We have one cage from the zoo shop but let them roam around the room and have a few corners they can go to to find peace, but it seems like one always wants to have ALL the corners. There's also one hidey they both really like, even though there are 3 in the room.)

I have concerns about my cat's former foster mom

Some backstory: My cat is a little over a year old. When he was very small he was hit by a car and subsequently had his front right leg amputated. Through his surgery and wound care, he was fostered by a nice lady around my age who worked with the humane society. She decided not to keep him and he was placed for adoption.

Enter me. I adopted him as soon as I saw his picture on the website. I was in need of companionship and set out to provide him with as much love and care as I could. He has quickly become my baby and I love him like he's my son. I can't imagine life without him.

However, his foster mom won't leave us alone. He has a couple of social media pages that I keep for him and she follows those pages. It would be fine if she said things like 'he's so cute!' but she says 'my baby is growing so big!' or 'I miss my baby boy!' Today was the year anniversary of his amputation and she sent me an old baby picture of him and said 'it's been a year since I saved his life (crying emoji.)' This really ticked me off because while yes, she did foster him and provide care for him immediately after his surgery, he has been mine for nearly a year now. I am the one that takes him to the vet, provides his food and toys and loves on him every moment I can. My thoughts are, if she wanted to keep him and have the right to call him 'her boy' she should've adopted him herself.

Regardless, I am worried that if I don't continue responding to this lady positively and basically enabling her, that she will try to have him removed from my care. I believe if she reports that I abuse him (I do not) the county will remove him immediately without investigation. If they were to ask anyone, or look at social media, or come in to my home it would be apparent that my cat receives excellent care. In short, he is loved by everyone and is cared for with love.

I don't know how to respond to his foster mom without driving her to extremes because she seems like that kind of person. I am frustrated by the things she says and I wish she would stop. It's all good and well interacting with the posts I make of my cat on social media, but I do not appreciate her contacting me directly with the things she says. What can I do?

Kitten prefers roommates bed over mine.

Hi, I just got a male kitten and he used to always sleep on my bed. But now it seems that he prefers to sleep on my roommates bed which is an issue because she is allergic.

I am constantly feeding him treats and playing with him, but I’m also the one who does most of the disciplining. Please advise I feel unloved LOL.

My boyfriend helped out at an animal shelter last week and the next day we were both covered in flea bites, his entire back is covered in them. I don’t know what else to do.

My dog is sick. I don’t know why. He has been throwing up a lot since yesterday (09/28/2020) morning and hasn’t eaten either. He has begun shaking too. I took him to the vet today to pay $600 for them to say “We can see he is sick but our inquiries can’t tell us why.” They sent us home with anti-nausea and broad spectrum antibiotics. I gave him the anti-nausea nut he seems to have only gotten worse. He’s shaking he refuses food no matter the portion I can’t even get him to take his antibiotic with a little peanut-butter, which he has never had a problem with before. I’m gonna inform the vet in the morning but I absolutely can’t afford to take him back to the vet though. I don’t know what to do.

I’m thinking of getting a cat. I’ve never had a pet cat before so I’d really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me. I know I should take it in when it’s a kitten so it gets to know me, but should I absolutely expect to be bitten and/or scratched? What are the chances of getting an infection?

My one year old cat keeps tipping her dish, which spills her water all over the floor.

My cat is wonderful and I love her, but it’s almost like she’s revolting against having water! Her cat dish is two bowls in one stand kind of thing, so if she moves it, the whole thing goes. It’s also on an absorbent mat that doesn’t have very good grip. Is there any way I can prevent this? It’s getting frustrating when I wake up to the sound of it being tipped (I live in a very small apartment).

I put water in one dish and food in the other. Should I separate them from the stand? Should I get a different mat? Thanks for the advice in advance!

Anytime I’m next to him while he’s sleeping or lying down, I just here weird bubbling noises nonstop near his stomach. Started happening or I started noticing it around 2-4 days ago. i seriously hate my dog

I tried taking him as my brother could not put up with his violent behavior. today I pet him to sleep and all of a sudden he woke up and almost bit my finger off. Im gushing blood all over. all I did was try to get up from the floor and he woke up and attacked me. He also attacks neighbors and strangers.

I have been attacked before but not for petting him while he naps. I always do this. I take good care of him and feed him, walk him, give him love and this is what he does to me?

Can I take him to be put down or can I give him away. He is super violent and stubborn.

How to stop cat hunting snakes

I'm not sure if this belongs here but I saw no rules against it, so I'll post this here.

My cat (Stanley) is a nearly 10 yr old male who was a Tom cat nearly all his life before I adopted him. He LOOOOVES hunting, usually hunts mice and sometimes rats, but he never gets hurt. the thing I'm worried about is when he hunts snakes. He has only hunted 3 whip snakes before and he caught one today which freaked me out a bit. he is an outside cat, but that's only because 1. he's been an outside cat all his life, it's really hard to keep him in. 2. I live with my mother and brothers, one of which has full mutation fragile x, so he can't do basically anything let alone close a door behind him so it is nearly impossible to keep all doors closed.

So Stanley goes out in our yard, (in Australia, so there are plenty of snakes) and finds snakes. Usually whip snakes, and he's fluffy so he hasn't been bitten yet, but I'm worried one day he will find a brown snake or a breeding ball of whip snakes (like the cat across the road did, that cat died) and get seriously hurt or die.

so, I guess my question is,

is there any way to stop my cat from hunting snakes?

Should I take back my kitty?

So I got my kitty at the beginning of the year, had her for around 3 months untill she was around 7 months and then all this covid shit happened. I was kicked out of the flat, lost my job and had no other choice to fly back to my country and leave her with my friend since there was no flights that were transporting animals.

I couldn't come back until until I got a new job and it has been 6 months now since my cat is at that house, there hasn't been a day since I haven't thought about her and I just want her back.

I have to do training for a job,1 week at their base which is not in my city, than 2 weeks in my city and again one week outside. Once I finish training I will live like a normal person. I have flatmate that could take care of her in those times but I don't want to stress my kitty from moving flats and changing owners constantly.

I don't know what to do, taking her from current owners will be quite stressful, than being her for 2 weeks, going away for a week, again two weeks with her, and leaving for one more week. Will I be horrible, selfish prick if I do that?

Moving out

Hi, so I have to take a quick and crucial decision within less than one week and here is the context : I will be moving out soon with my family, and we had a cat for the past 10 years (we still do have him). So the thing is that the current flat where we live has a yard where our cat used to go out really often, meet his other cat friend, go to neighbor’s house (where they almost adopted him) and live his life in total security. Now, there is no yard where we are going to move, which means that our cat will be forced to stay inside.

Now you can see where this is going: should we take him with us or leave him to the neighbors ?

Here are the points: If we take him with us I am afraid that he is going to be depressed due to loneliness (no other cat) and being deprived from the outside world and nature. But if we leave him to the neighbors he will feel abandoned by us and come to our door and meow as he always do, except this time, the door won’t open.

Both solutions breaks my heart, what should I do ?

Cat’s poop smells like vomit

My cat’s poop smells like vomit

I have a 12 y o British Shorthair boy. He is generally healthy; he used to suffer from constipation in the past, but for the last few months has been eating special food (suggested by the vet) and has been going to the litterbox everyday. He eats 1 little box of wet cat food a day + a few tablespoons of dry food. It’s a good quality, vet-approved brand. He drinks water throughout the day-about 1 bowl a day.

About a two weeks ago he ate a tiger lily leaf. I know those are toxic for cats so I took him to the pet hospital and he was examined. The vet said he seems okay and gave him one dose of antibiotics just in case. He is now perfectly fine, plays, runs, follows me around the house, loves being carried.

The only thing I’m concerned about is that for the last week or so his poops smell TERRIBLY. They smell like human vomit. I noticed that he farts really loudly whenever he is pooping in the litterbox which is something that’s never happened to him before.

His diet hasn’t changed or he hasn’t eaten anything strange. The tiger lilies are long gone, I threw them out immediately after our last hospital visit.

Does anyone have any idea why his poop has a vomit smell? Is it normal?

[Discussion] why did my friends dog not protect me?

10 years ago I was a victim of a horrible attack. At the time me and my ex was not getting on and when she left she stole 5grand from me that i was going to use to move. 2 weeks after that i found out where she was staying. Police was not interested so i broke into her place to try and find the money. Was never found. Since then she had made up stories saying I was harassing her and her new boyfriend was apparently a psychopath so I forgot about the money and moved on. But she kept making up stories. I was then looking my friends 3 year old Male rottweiler. My ex girlfriends boyfriend broke into my house and attacked me. He punched and kicked me all over so bad I could not move. The dog did not do anything, he just stood and watched. At the end her boyfriend ripped my trousers and pants apart and crushed my left testicle with some sort of grips. The screaming and crying was so loud and the dog still just watched. The testicle exploded making the screams and cries even louder and the dog did not react at all. He did not growl or bark. He just stood completely still and watched. I passed out and kept going in and out of consciousness. Neighbor came round and called and ambulance and I was in hospital for ages. The real question is if the other testicle was crushed would the dog have helped then or just stand still and watch?

My puppy is unpredictably fear aggressive while on her leash

My puppy (4mos) is a sweet girl who is gentle as can be with children, cats and nearly every dog she meets EXCEPT that 1 out of every 10 times she meets a dog while out on her leash and goes bananas. For no obvious reason (being startled, the other dog showing aggressive signs, etc.) she will sometimes decide that she is terrified of an approaching dog and will cower behind me and bark and growl. The growl in particular really concerns me because she sounds quite fierce - she is a shepherd cross and though young is going to be big and has a "big dog" bark and growl. She never shows her teeth or snaps at the other dog, but she does put her hackles up.

The problem is, there is NO pattern to which dog is going to freak her out - today for example, she had great interactions with a German Shepherd three times her size, a young doberman, and a smallish mutt, but lost her mind at a Corgi puppy - and she only ever seems to do it when I am walking her. She goes to a very good, structured doggy daycare every day where she has puppy class and interacts with 15+ other dogs of all age/shape/size/breed and they love her there. When I mentioned to her teachers she was having this trouble, they looked at me like I had three heads and said she was the best behaved puppy on their pack walk. She has met my mom's schnauzer cross with zero incident and my aunt's very aggressive Morkie also with no problem at all.

When my husband walks her, apparently she will bark once in a while, but never goes into the frightened aggressive state she does with me. What am I doing wrong? How can I curb this before she gets herself in trouble? I'm so afraid she's going to growl at the wrong dog and get attacked!

Putting my dog down

This really sucks. My dog was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in June. I took care of her for a week and she started feeling better. Walking, eating, barking, and jumping. My mom took her to the vet last month and they said we would need to put her down soon due to the cancer. I told my mom that if she starts declining, then we have to put her down because I don’t want her to suffer. I received a text from my mom this morning that she refuses to eat, has been vomiting, and doesn’t get up from her bed.

It hurts me so much to go through with this, but I know it’s best.

We found her 10 years ago on the street and she’s been one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had. I feel horrible putting her down but I’ve been mentally preparing for it. I just feel horrible because my other dog is going to lose her companion, my family is going to lose a pet, and I feel I could’ve done more for her.

I’m just ranting at this point, but any tips on getting through this time would be great.

Need a bit of help here

I recently adopted a puppy, and since the 22nd i've been trying to teach him not to chew on things that aren't food, also not to piss anywhere he wants and only in the bathroom or outside. But since then, i didn't manage to train him on anything, it might be just the way my parents told me to do, or i should try something else? They told me that whenever he does something he shouldn't do give him a slight hit with a newspaper so that he learns what not to do. I am sure that this probably isn't the best way, but i didn't have any other dogs that would chew on things or piss anywhere they want. They learnt that by themselves, so doing this is a bit difficult for me. Since it never happened to me before.

So my questions are :
How do i deal with this?
Is the method my parents told me gonna work eventually or should i try something else?
How long will it take to train him?

Can’t stop dogs from going ballistic at other dogs/people on walks, help!

I own two Maltese shiztus aged 7 and 9 and for the majority of their life they’ve lived in the outback, however I moved to town a year ago for for my job. There’s some bushy area not too far from where I live so that’s where I take them for walks now but on the way there/back we often run into other people just doing their exercise and walking their dogs. My dogs do. Not. Like. This. Every single person they see they go absolutely insane with barking! I’ve tried everything I could think of, trying to redirect their attention by calling them, standing in between the person and them even one of those citrus spray collars but it all does absolutely nothing! They don’t even pause when they get sprayed and just continue to go insane, it’s honestly extremely embarrassing to deal with and I’m at my wits end for what to do!

If anyone has any suggestions at all that would be super appreciated!!

Trying to figure out what small animal would work best for me?

I am a 22 year old woman that recently moved out of my parents house, which was definitely a pet household with many dogs and cats and various others over the years.

Having come from such a household, I'm missing having an animal around to take care of and spend time with (and my boyfriend joining me here doesn't fill the same niche, lol).

I live in a 700 Sq foot one bedroom apartment, and cats or dogs aren't permitted but small animals are!

I've kept rats before, but I just want to make sure I explore all my options for a pet that fits my lifestyle. My boyfriend and I both work from home and will be around most of the time. We both are pretty relaxed types that want a pet that is affectionate.

Care costs aren't a massive concern. For space, a horizontal sprawl would be a problem, but a vertical one isn't.

Any advice or suggestions?

New Puppy Issue

Just got a puppy. She likes to follow everyone, play with them, literally all my friends. When they call for her, she runs to them.

However, she completely disregards me calling her, she doesn’t come to me (despite the fact that I have been feeding her, taking her for walks, giving treats, rubbing her buddy, getting her new toys). She’s been like that since I got her last week.

It’s like she doesn’t understand or maybe care when I call her but understands and cares if others do.

Any tips or suggestions?

A little moral question

Sometime ago my pet hamster died. It lived for 1.5 - 2 years. That is the only loss of a pet I ever expirienced even though I had a lot more of pets

So I wanted myself a bearded dragon for a long time already and I already choose a shop and stuff.

But I was thinking recently: should i get a pet if it's going to die anyway? Is it worth going through this horrible feeling? Also should i post this question on r/Petloss? People who went through a loss of a pet a bunch of times, was it worth it? Does a lifespan matter?

Also sorry for my grammar, English is not my native lang.

Why is my dog literally screaming (not barking, like human screaming) at the cat from across the room?

My dog and cat have been introduced for a few weeks, and don’t bother each other and are pretty friendly honestly throughout the day. The cat hasn’t stayed with us because we’re doing this gradually so as not to have issues like the one we’re having right now.

Tonight the dog fr screamed humanly bloody murder at the cat, and the cat was across the room. It was a genuinely human and genuinely terrifying sound, like dog was being stabbed in the living room. We rush out there and the cat is on the other side of the room minding her own business. The dog is shaking on the couch but isn’t skittish or anything, let me pick him up, was perfectly normal, didn’t have any marks on him like the cat attacked him (and the cat never had attacked him before).

We pet him for a minute and then went to bed, and it happened again. Same thing. Like I can’t describe the sound other than it sounded like a 13 year old girl was being actively murdered in my living room. It was the worst sound I’ve ever heard in my life.

What the fuck is this shit? What do I do? I can’t keep the cat locked in the bathroom forever. It’s not fair because she’s fr not doing anything to him (also I prefer the cat). Do I have options? Do I have to like, choose one of the animals? Does it just take time? How do I prevent this deeply disturbing sound from haunting my life every night for the foreseeable future? Has this ever happened to anyone?

Can’t decide which pup to adopt.

Currently struggling so bad!!!

My partner and I are torn between 2 dogs that we could see spending the rest of their lives with them. One dog is a large, mixed breed and social girl. She’s 4 years old and was an owner surrender so there is more medical history and she has mostly been properly taken care of all her life.

The other is a very small senior pit bull girl, who is SO CUTE. 11 years old and was a stray until taken into a rescue. She’s a fan favorite at her shelter and is so silly. She’s not as sociable and the shelter said she has a naughty side. I hate letting this sweet girl spend her last few years without a forever home!

Any tips on how to make a final decision? Both have reasonable donations being asked so financially there’s no issues. The older pup may require more medical though due to age.

Need help with rehomed dogs behavior

My family and I got a new long haired dotson mix about 2 months ago, he has opened up to most of us but not to my step-dad. There are a few problems that we are having. The main issue is him barking at the slightest of noises and at my step-dad when he talks, we have been trying to train him not to but we haven't gotten anywhere. The next problem is his biting habits, although it has gotten better recently he always likes to lunge at people who get near my mom when they are alone. And the final one is him is being scared of my step-dad, we have tried again and again to get them to work together but thats not been working we think its because my step-dad picked him up from his previous owner of 6 years but we arent sure. Please help me because my parents are contemplating giving him away and i dont want that.

Need Help Keeping Kitties From Plants!

Winter is coming.

All the foreboding aside, I need to bring in my plants. The only issue is that I have THREE kitties who adore eating plants (and then throwing them up like ride gremlins).

I need a way to keep the kitties away from my plants. Two are large chonkers so chicken wire MAY help but the other is a runt at 5.4lbs. The runt is also a sneaky little rat and will eat while I'm not looking -- RIP my calatheas.

I've tried scents and aluminum foil. Anyone else have better ideas? Sadly closing them in a room isn't an option.

Thank you in advance!

I have two four month old kittens and one of them doesn't like to eat much. She's very thin!

Hi reddit, I adopted two kittens a few months ago as quarantine buddies. They're my first kittens ever and I am learning a lot about how to take care of them - I worry a lot! One of them... doesn't like to eat much. She's very thin and underweight for her age, she's like three and a half pounds, and my google searches generally tell me they should weight as much as how old they are until about a year. She poops and pees regularly, is incredibly energetic, loves to play and explore. She's just terribly thin and boney. Her brother is a healthy eater and always finishes his food no problem. He's around four and a half pounds. They're strictly indoor cats.

I feed them at the same time in different bowls, I watch them to make sure no one is pushing the other out of the way to eat or bullying the other. She just never finishes it! She will eat half if not less then wander off. Her brother won't toucher her food, he just cleans his bowl then wanders off. I've tried different brands, I feed them wet food in the morning then dry a few times through the day. No difference. I thought maybe worms at first, but they were both dewormed right before I brought them home, and wouldn't she be ravenous if she was wormy?

She had no interest in cat treats or any human food, like chicken shreds or little bits of beef. Her brother will eat pretty much anything. The *one* thing she likes is little bits of cheese. I realize dairy isn't healthy for kittens so they get a few shreds maybe once or twice a week. I can feel her bones when I pet her. She seems happy and healthy but she's growing! Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get her to eat more? Is this normal? Am I worrying too much? Thank you!

My cat leaves her two-week old kittens every night for a few hours

Context:

So there's this one cat that has been roaming around my neighborhood for the last 4-5 years. Lately we took her in as she gave birth to two kittens and she's been in my basement ever since. It's really comfy and warm there and she has all the food she needs.

I let her outside two times a day but up until tonight she did not want to go out that much. She returned after half an hour, or 2 hours max at night. However, tonight she went out at 9:30pm (now it:s 1:42am) and I'm worried about the kittens. I live in a really small town in Europe with no veterinary and I can't get her any kitten formula right now. I could maybe order it online but it will take a while to get here. I am aware of emergency kitten formulas and I will use them, but not for too long.

My question is, is this normal cat behavior? I like to think that because she was stray she likes to roam around and maybe she went too far.

Dog is freaking out and keeping me from sleeping.

This is a shot in the dark, but here's the deal. My friend is staying on my living room floor tonight with her dog. My dogs are in the bedroom with my girlfriend, all sleeping. I've been awake all night, because my friend's little shit has been crying nonstop since 11pm. The reason for said crying seems to be his unwavering desire to sit outside the bedroom door, opposite my dogs, and scream like a human infant. For the last 6 hours I've been parked on the couch to deter him from crashing through the barrier that I set up, and waking my girlfriend. My friend is sleeping through this like she's dead. Could someone please grace me with a solution to this problem?

Has anyone had a cat survive after eating tylenol?

Just wondering if anyone has experienced their cat eating Tylenol and surviving? I rushed my kitty to the vet first thing this morning after noticing she had thrown up and her face was puffy. I think I got her there within the 4-6 hour ingestion window but I don't know. The vet isn't optimistic but they're keeping her for 36 hours.

I just want to know if anyone has gone through something similar and if their buddy has any long term issues from it.

Help with Syrian hamster, 2 months old, very tired lately

Recently at the start of August we noticed our hamster had some blood coming out of her lower bottom area. I took her out to the vet in our state and the people there said she just had a cut. About a week later the bleeding stopped! Last monday we noticed that the bleeding started to go again, we took her back to the same, previous vet and they did an X-RAY and an ULTRASOUND on her. The doctor said "There could be something on her right side that the ULTRASOUND showed, but I'm not sure". We brought her home with some medicine to treat a possible uti, and the vet said they could try out and explore in surgery, but there were low chances of her making it through that since she was so small (not for a hamster, she's fat) and risky because of her age, probably because she will not be that strong though. We noticed in the past couple days she seemed stiff and out of it. She hunches up a lot and never really wakes up to come out. She still bleeds and never drinks water. She is losing blood but she is trying to be strong. It's coming out of near where she pees, if you know what to do and have the will to offer advice we can send you a picture of her. Thanks, hopefully you can help.

Needing help with having dog and cat meet

Before I delve into this, I just want to say that my family and I have been dog people our entire lives. My parents have had had 3 dogs throughout their life time and 2 of them have been while I've been alive. Our dog now is a 10 year old french bulldog who is a big mush, but also has the energy levels of a puppy. So, we're fairly new to living with a cat but have been doing great so far!! And she loves her new home

For a year now I've been wanting a cat (I'm 23 but live at home so convincing my dad that a 2 animal house would be good took a bit). But, about 3 weeks ago we brought home my 11 month old cat. Not only is she an absolute sweet heart, but she is intelligent and fun.

She's been living in my bedroom since she's been home, but we will give her access to the house entire day throughout the week with the dog in a separate room. We've been trying to find a good balance of getting them familiar with each other but since we're fairly new at this we've been a bit hesitant.

Our dog is just excited to see her and wants to play, while she either completely ignores him or hisses a bit since she's scared. I was wondering if anyone has any advice that could help us as we try to transition them into living together? And maybe ease some of our worries?

Also for the record our bulldog cannot climb the stairs, he's extremely scared of them since the wood is slippery, our cat loves the stairs and will run up to my room the second she needs a safe space.

How do I know if my dog loves and trusts me?

We got our dog a year and a half from the animal shelter. She was rescued from a meat farm and she has extreme anxiety. I don’t even want to think about what she could have went through, but I know that the meet farm breaded and killed lots of animals to use for meat. When we first got her she wouldn’t lay down or relax when we came in the room and would always have to be standing up, she didn’t eat in front of us and would only do it if she was alone in a different room, she would duck down when we tried to pet her, she took a lot of coaxing to go to the potty or leave her bed. It broke my heart seeing her so terrified and I really was worried that she would ever trust me. She has come such a long way since then, but I can’t tell if she really trusts me yet. She sleeps in my bed every night (and literally doesn’t leave the bed unless she is eating or going potty), she gives me licks all the time but I can’t tell if she just likes the taste, I’ve seen her get excited a couple of times when I give her cheese and her tail will wag, she Is becoming less afraid of going up and down the stairs or going outside, and she lets us pet her but doesn’t hold eye contact very long and feels unsettled if we are petting her too long. How will I know that she feels safe with us and happy?

My cat does the same ritual every time before she eats.

I normally only fill my cat's bowl once a day, during the mornings, and she eats whenever she feels like it. Her name is Sally, she's my only cat.

The thing is, every, every single time before she starts eating she has to spend 5-10 minutes with me doing something. Purring, sitting on my lap, walking around on the table with the tail upwards rubbing in my face, and most frequently, kneading. This is my first cat, but I've never seen a cat knead on my belly so much as she does. I spend most of my time on my computer, so it's easy for her to jump on my lap, and she kneads A LOT. Normally, she only stops when I interrupt. After that, she goes immediately to the food. She also frequently refuses to eat when I'm not at home, specially when I travel for more than 1 week. I also must tell that I live alone and I'm home 90% of time (I leave home 3 or 4 times a week for 1-4 hours max).

Have you seen some other cat doing some ritual before it does something? Is this over-attachment, and if it is, to what extend is it acceptable?

Floor Spill!

Help!! So I spilled an entire bottle of Lysol cleaner on my floor. I have since wiped it all up and then mopped the floor with water and am waiting for it to dry. It’s in my cat litter box area and I want to make sure it’s safe before letting them go in. Is there any way I can clean it so it’s safe for them? Any help would be great!

Question about URIs in kittens

So my 5 month old kitten is currently on a two week course of antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection (.35 ML of clavamox taken twice a day). Around day 5 his congestion was mostly cleared up and he didn't have any more snot. It's day 10 now and it seems like the congestion, watery eyes and a little bit of snot is starting to come back. Should I try to take him back to the vet tomorrow or should I wait a few days to see if the remainder of his antibiotics clears it up?

Dog Barking When Home Alone

Hi all, looking for some advice here. I have had my dog for six months, she is a four year old Pittie mix. Around the two month mark, she started to bark when I’m not home. At first I thought she has hearing something on the TV, so I tried leaving classical music on as white noise in the background instead. No such luck. For the last four months, I have tried what feels like everything. Treats, interactive toys, Adaptil collar, desensitization, etc. Her walks are split up into two 45-60 minute walks or one giant 90 minute walk everyday. She is on Prozac for reactivity, which has helped her tremendously with her training and adjusting. Tried Trazodone, and it is hit or miss. Some days she is calm, others she barks on and off for hours. I have a trainer who is great and has been helpful in this situation. That being said, my neighbors (I live in an apartment) have been VERY patient and understanding and I can tell they’re starting to get agitated. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

Dog dental cleaning/extraction for a senior dog

I've got a yorkie who's 9 years old now and after a check up the vet says he needs to get a dental cleaning done and also he will need to have some of his teeth extracted. They said this can even be up to 10 teeth extracted and I'm just freaking out because how is he supposed to eat properly?? I know this could have been prevented and I feel awful. I just want to make sure he is healthy moving forward. I've heard that they don't even tell you how many teeth they've taken out until the procedure is done.

I'm looking around for the best rates too because the surgery is so expensive, and I'm just wondering how long it's ok to wait? I had no idea this could cause him pain, he never shows any pain when eating or us petting him or playing around... I'm also scared about the anesthesia because I've heard sometimes dogs don't even wake up from this. We've got his bloodwork all done and they said he's a very healthy dog and it's just the teeth that could cause problems later on because it's in stage 3.

Could anyone who knows what it's like to undergo this procedure tell me how their dog reacted to it? Is this something that will help him greatly or make him even more stressed? Is this going to negatively impact his life expectancy? Any help would be so appreciated, thanks.

Anybody know where to get a toy similar?

I’ve got a dog with jaw and bladder cancer and she’s got an estimated 2 months left. We bought her the OMG surprise 2-in-1 pig and bacon dog toy and she instantly loved it more than any other toy she’s ever had, including the ball she’s been obsessed with her whole life. We’ve been looking all over for the toy but can’t find it anywhere and it looks to have been discontinued. So my question is if anybody knows of a toy similar to that one we could get her

I’m not really sure where to post this question so I’m trying here, if there’s a better place please let me know

Do land snails asexually reproduce?

My roommate and I want to get a pet snail. We want to keep a single snail since we cannot afford a bunch of snail grandchildren. We read that some snails are hermaphrodites and others are capable of asexual reproduction. We have also read that most land snails are hermaphrodites and cannot breed without sperm. Are there any land snail breeds that can’t asexually reproduce? We will check for eggs of course but just don’t want to end up with a bunch of snails if we miss a clutch of eggs.

Thank you, any help or other tips for snail keeping are appreciated.

Any Revolutionary War themed names are appreciated as well.

Cat prefers my roommates

I adopted a kitten recently (m/6mo) and I've noticed that he prefers my roommates (m/f) over me. I try to spend time with him as much as I can, I feed him, I play with him, and pet him, but for whatever reason he just likes them more it seems. If they're in their room, he'll scream and scratch until they let him in, but if he's in my room, he acts like he's being held hostage. I don't know if I did anything wrong or if it's just a him thing but it's just starting to get to me now

Is it okay to skip the daily walk and replace it with backyard time?

I take daily evening walks with him but theres some days where i have too much homework to take him on a walk. Would it be okay if i instead take him out to the backyard on days i dont have time so he can potty and play?

Getting a dog and cat to like each other?

So, I just got a new kitten (4 mo, F) about 2 months ago. I introduced her at weekends to my housemates dog (10 y, F), and let her stay at my parents for 3-4 days during the week. My parents have the same breed of dog (a malamute 9 y, F) and whilst my parents dog tries to provoke the cat, the cat generally seems to tolerate her more than my housemates dog. I know my parents dog a lot more than I know my housemates, and knew that my parents who are retired would be able to take care of both of them, where as I work during the week, so didn't want to leave the cat locked in my room whilst I'm at work.

The time has come now to get them used to living together. So I've started introducing her to the great out doors with the hope that during the day when I'm at work now I can start letting her out soon in a couple of months.

I underestimated my house mates dog. She is a lot more friendly and patient towards the cat than I initially gave her credit for. She follows the cat around and sits patiently waiting for the cat to get used to her. She doesn't try to provoke the cat, and generally acts nicer towards her than my parents dog who is a bit grumpy. If the cat does muster up the courage to approach the dog, the dog just sits there and let's her do it with her tail wagging. She has been absolutely golden with the cat. They both have free run of the house when I'm home, though I never quite leave them on their own, and separate them when I'm not at home.

The cat is slowly getting used to the dog, though she still hisses and growls at the dog whenever she approaches her.

Is there any way to speed things along? I know eventually they will get to the point where they can co-exist unsupervised, but I'm still walking on egg shells whenever I have them together. I trust the dog with the cat, but I'm scared that if the cat swipes at the dog then 1. The dog might be seriously injured, and 2. This might provoke her in to attacking the cat.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some cat keeps going to our house when she’s pregnant; does this mean she wants to live with us?

There’s this one girl cat with a collar who kept hanging around our backyard. We didn’t really mind her since she seemed to make the rats disappear and we didn’t really know how to stop her from coming back. She didn’t really show herself but we just caught glimpses of her from time to time. She would leave if we would go by the backyard anyways so we didn’t mind her presence.

After a few weeks, we noticed that she kept coming back with another cat. They found a home somewhere in our backyard and we realized that the collared cat was pregnant. During all this time, we didn’t pay them attention nor give them any food, since we were afraid that if we did, they’d end up staying (all of us staying in the house are not really keen on keeping pets since we all live a very busy lifestyle and we have babies in the house).

Anyway, the cat gave birth to a few kittens, and we were thinking about how to handle this and if we should prepare to be pet owners. However, the next day we found that they upped and left their little corner, along with the kittens. The mom and dad cat came back now and again to hunt some rats but that was it.

After a few months, the mom cat started coming back way more often. It also started being more comfortable with us. Before, she would run away whenever someone comes near them or if we make eye contact. But now, she seems to be more daring. Even if we walk near her she wouldn’t run away. She even started sleeping right in the middle of our backyard.

There was one time where she left her kittens by my terrace. I found them hiding in a corner and realized they’ve been there for awhile. The mom cat came back after a few hours and took them away.

One night, I woke up to some noise coming from our terrace. When I checked, I saw the mom cat with her kittens laying there, with a dead rat. I thought they were there for their usual mealtime so I went right back to sleep. When I woke up, the cats were gone, but the rat wasn’t. It creeped me tf out and made me fearful for what else they may leave outside my house. Sure, I’m grateful for their free pest control services, but I live with children and I’m afraid the cats would leave dead animals that can attract other animals that are harder to handle.

Anyway, the point of this story was just to ask whether we should be expecting this cat to be living here with us from now on? Or is it just hanging around because its pregnant again?

Also, are there ways that we can stop the cat from coming back? I would like to avoid the event that it makes a habit of leaving dead animals by our place.

I’ve done a few research about cats leaving dead animals but we’re not even their owners so maybe there’s something else going on?

I apologize for the long post but I’m really puzzled by this experience. I’m also not very well versed on the world of cats so pardon my ignorance on the matter.

We’re not really sure who the cat owner is and animal control services are not really available in our area.

TLDR; cat keeps coming back to have babies in our house, im confused as to what our relationship with her will be

Newly Adopted Cat Not Eating/Drinking

Hi Reddit!

I adopted an adorable 2 year old cat on Thursday night. I am a first time cat owner, but have owned dogs and horses - so have experience with animals.

Since coming home, she has not been eating or drinking. She has also been sneezing, with intermittent eye watering. She has thrown up small amounts of clear liquid x 2. She has used her litter box at least twice. She was spayed on 9/21. She was vaccinated at the shelter.

I've called the vet twice, and they don't seem concerned. She has an appointment tomorrow morning (Monday). I am keeping a close eye on her - I have a low threshold for taking her to urgent care, but thought I would reach out and see what you guys think.

I have set out two types of dry food (the type she had been eating at the shelter, and a type I bought at the store), two types of wet food (chicken and salmon), and a can of tuna. I have tried heating the wet food, creating a mushy pate of dry food + wet food, etc. She has only taken a few licks, but not actually any bites/substantial amounts.

On Friday, I started using a 5ml syringe to slowly and carefully give her small drops of water on her tongue, and I've been doing that about every 90 minutes. (I can't believe she's letting me do it!)

I have read that cats can feel stressed in a new environment, and it may take them a few days to feel secure enough to eat/drink. I keep hoping she will turn a corner and start eating/drinking on her own.

Do I need to be more patient & give her a few more days? Any suggestions on what other food I can offer? Or how to make her food more appealing? Anything I can do to promote hydration - especially her drinking on her own?

Other than what I described above, she has been extremely sweet and affectionate. Perhaps a little lethargic, understandably. She's sitting on my lap as I write this!

Thanks so much!

Dog and cats don’t get along so they are now separated by a gate to give the cats a safe zone and some peace. The dog however is getting jealous of the cats. What can we do?

My bf has a dog and I have cats. We had to separate her from the cats by a gate as she showed some worrying behaviours towards the cats. For example, she chased and petrified them. It was occasional but it was enough to make the cats (and me!) feel stressed and on edge. She went for their food when we were not there to supervise. She got aggressive towards the cats if they went near her food. Since we segregated areas for them, the cats have been a lot happier as they can live in peace. It however has made the dog jealous of the cats and seek for more attention. She will whine and whimper when I talk to the cats and feed them. She will get extremely noisy if I play with them and give them treats. Basically, the attention has to be to her. If it’s not her, she will upset, stomp her feet and get vocal, which in all honesty is distracting and annoying. I get that dogs like attention and want to be close to humans. Because of the gate, she doesn’t get to sit next to us all the time anymore so she probably feels anxious. So I’ve been talking to my bf about removing the gate if we could train her to leave the cats alone. We’ve spoken to some people that have both dogs and cats and the advice generally is to separate them so the cats can have their safe zone. Does anyone have any advice for this?
