Please help we don’t know what to do 😒

Our dog Boris is a French Bulldog. He is 2 years 2 months old. We have just rehomed him. We got him 19/09 so one week ago. The reason behind his previous owners rehoming him was due to them having a disabled son who would kick Boris and be too rough with him and they had a 13 year old Dogue de Bordeaux who didn’t want to play with him so she was getting nasty. They had him from a puppy.

When we first brought Boris home with us he was right as rain. Happy in the car home etc. We got him a bed, toys and everything possible he would need. The only thing we didn’t have was a stair gate. So on the first night we closed him in the kitchen but he pushed the door open and was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. We tried for 2 hours to get him to settle, eventually he did when we stayed downstairs in the living room with him.

The second night we’d managed to get a stair gate and we put it up at the dog between the living room and kitchen. Boris had not left our side all day and was asleep on the our bed when it came to bedtime. We put him downstairs in the kitchen and he just kept whining. My boyfriend gave in in the end and let him come and stay upstairs.

The third night my boyfriends family tried Boris downstairs again. He none stop cried and they say he “sounded in so much distress”. He had peed in the kitchen when crying so they felt bad for him and let him upstairs again. Since then it’s just been a constant battle with trying to get him to sleep downstairs.

(I don’t live with my boyfriend and his family I’m here 4 days a week so I’m not actually sure if the “crying” was distress or if it is just a Frenchie begging for attention as I know they have a distinct sound. I stayed here last night and to me the cry does just sound like he just wants attention. I have an 11 year old pug at my mums where I live and and she has a very similar sound when she doesn’t get her own way).

I’m just wondering if anyone can help? Should we leave him downstairs tonight and just leave him to cry? If so, how long is too long to leave them crying/whining? Do we just allow him to come upstairs again? Is there any other things you would suggest we do? I’ve looked into anxiety coats, do they actually work? The previous owners have sent their dogs blanket in the post to us to try and see if he will settle with her scent. I’m hoping he will but if not, what can we do?

My boyfriends mum thinks he would be better suited in a home with another dog so he isn’t alone as that’s what he was used to in his previous home? We want to give Boris the benefit of the doubt as we know it’s only been a week and can take months for a dog to settle, but he just doesn’t listen to a word you say. He knows no commands or tricks so it’s hard to even try and coax him 😒
