Need a bit of help here

I recently adopted a puppy, and since the 22nd i've been trying to teach him not to chew on things that aren't food, also not to piss anywhere he wants and only in the bathroom or outside. But since then, i didn't manage to train him on anything, it might be just the way my parents told me to do, or i should try something else? They told me that whenever he does something he shouldn't do give him a slight hit with a newspaper so that he learns what not to do. I am sure that this probably isn't the best way, but i didn't have any other dogs that would chew on things or piss anywhere they want. They learnt that by themselves, so doing this is a bit difficult for me. Since it never happened to me before.

So my questions are :
How do i deal with this?
Is the method my parents told me gonna work eventually or should i try something else?
How long will it take to train him?
