My bf has a dog and I have cats. We had to separate her from the cats by a gate as she showed some worrying behaviours towards the cats. For example, she chased and petrified them. It was occasional but it was enough to make the cats (and me!) feel stressed and on edge. She went for their food when we were not there to supervise. She got aggressive towards the cats if they went near her food. Since we segregated areas for them, the cats have been a lot happier as they can live in peace. It however has made the dog jealous of the cats and seek for more attention. She will whine and whimper when I talk to the cats and feed them. She will get extremely noisy if I play with them and give them treats. Basically, the attention has to be to her. If it’s not her, she will upset, stomp her feet and get vocal, which in all honesty is distracting and annoying. I get that dogs like attention and want to be close to humans. Because of the gate, she doesn’t get to sit next to us all the time anymore so she probably feels anxious. So I’ve been talking to my bf about removing the gate if we could train her to leave the cats alone. We’ve spoken to some people that have both dogs and cats and the advice generally is to separate them so the cats can have their safe zone. Does anyone have any advice for this?
