Looking for some advice here, In the beginning of April my girlfriend along with her 9 year old dog, along with her 6 year old dog moved into my apartment with my 6 year old cat and 2 year old golden. The cat and the golden have been living together since the golden was 8 weeks old. Our two other dogs have never lived with a cat before. The cat doesnt really care about the 6 year old dog, however the 9 year old dogs initial reaction to the cat is to chase her/whine/bark at her.
We have a 6 foot cat tree that she basically stays on top of most of the day, which is located in our office/cat room which the dogs typically stay out of unless we are in there trying to help adapt her to them. Since we’ve gotten the cat tree there has been less incidents of the dogs chasing the cat or having aggressive reactions towards her. Their attitudes towards each other are starting to get better, however the cat leaves the room at all the oldest dog will still chase her, which makes her go back to the cat room on top of the tree instantly.
Before the older dogs moved in she wasn’t the most affectionate cat, she would come in my bed in the middle of the night occasionally, and jump up onto the recliner once or twice a day, the only difference now is she is glued to her tower. She still likes to play with strings, she eats treats on top of her tree, she doesn’t seem to be eating any less. She has had one or two incidents where she’s peed on the floor, so it doesn’t seem to be affecting her diet, and daily life, they just cant be around each other completely yet.
This is a list of things we’ve done so far, but really are open to trying anything:
Bought the cat tree, turned the office into her own cat room Lock the dogs in our bedroom at night so she has access to the entire place Given her more treats/wet food when the dogs are in the office so she is comfortable eating around them. We’ve used a training collar on the dogs a few times to let them know that barking/whining at her isn’t okay.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated to help speed up the process of getting them comfortable with each other. We know it could take months but any tips would be welcomed.
