Is it normal for a short hair cat to shed more than a medium hair?

I have two kittens that are about 10 months old. They're both rescues so I don't know exact breeds or anything, and they're believed to be litter mates with different dads. One is a short hair, typical looking tabby and the other is a gray (I think) medium hair. He's not quite what I would call a long haired cat but he is definitely fluffy and has a bottle brush tail and hair tufts on his ears and paws.

I've noticed when brushing them that I get a lot more fur from the short hair cat than the medium hair one. His fur also feels more fine and soft than the short hair. Is that weird? I'm wondering if the medium hair still has his "baby" coat and if his fur will get longer or if he just doesn't shed much.
