Should I get a dog in my 20's?

Hi all,

I'm 24 and I live in a big city. I have always loved dogs and grew up with them. I always find I feel so much happier when I am around dogs.

I'm thinking about adopting a rescue adult dog, probably a pit mix of sorts. I work full time, but only go into the office once a week. I am fortunate that money is not much of an issue for me, so I can pay for doggy day care/ dog walker if needed. I consider myself a responsible person.

For the people that adopted a dog in their mid-early 20's and live in a city, would you recommend it? What have been your experiences/advice?

Thanks!

Cats not getting along

So we recently found the sweetest stray, he's an orange American short hair that's probably less than 1 year old and neutered. We already have a female tortie named Rita, she's spayed and about a year and a half old. Rita is quite skittish and shy, not very into playing, while the new male is the exact opposite. Loud, friendly, and very active. We were hesitant to introduce them at first, but our cat Rita was actually really curious about the new cat. She kept hanging around the door to the room we kept the stray boy in. However, when we did introduce them, the male kept hissing and doing angry meows at Rita, while Rita remained calm and curious. We've tried it twice like that now, (we held them a few feet apart and didn't let them get too close btw), but it still the same.

TLDR: new cat hissing at our current cat, while current cat is calm and curious

Is there a way we can get this new cat to like her?

What type of marine animal or bird is an ethical choice for a pet?

Would love to keep birds and fish but also don’t want to take part in the capitalist practice of ripping birds and fish out of their natural environment.

Where the hell are the flea larvae?

I'm having my annual flea war currently and noticed advantage and frontline are entirely resisted at this point. I can't get prescription strength ones for personal reasons and I feel hesitant to use anything nuclear on my old ass cat. Anyways, I've been using physical methods like Diatomaceous earth, washing, vacuuming, flea combing. I've become kind of an expert with the flea comb.

With that out of the way, I have a question more for my curiosity. I am intimately familiar with adult and young fleas, flea eggs, flea dirt. I have perhaps occasionally seen cocoons without realizing what it was. I have absolutely never seen a flea larvae. Their size doesn't seem that much smaller than fleas from the pictures online, and they are freaking worms. I know they like to hide, but is it really nearly impossible to spot one?

Dog in pain when he lays down

My dogs front right leg seems to be giving him a lot of bother. He will lie down for about a minute and then will yelp in pain and stand up. I don't want him standing up all night and I have lots of blankets and pillows in places for him to lie down but he won't do it. He's going to the vet tomorrow but Im not really sure how to keep him happy for the moment.

We brought home a new kitten two nights ago who's almost 3 months old and he's getting along fine with out 6 month old kitten the only problem is the older kitten isn't being affectionate towards us anymore. Will this change as time goes on?

The two kittens play fight the entire time and don't mind being around each other. Yes there's a little bit of hissing but nothing you wouldn't expect especially seeing how good they are together on the third day. The older kitten Theodore used to be the most loving cat ever always wanting to be up with us at every second of the day. We had almost thought he might have even had separation anxiety as he would be waiting by the door for us when we get home along side of some of his other behaviors. We're just worried he will stay like this and would consider giving the new kitten to a family member who's looking for one if it's not going to work out.

I got a two month old and I’m failing her

I wanted a cat but we saw someone had German Malinois they were giving away. I figured that’s a pretty active breed which would be good for me since I’m attempting to lose weight. My dad raised me around his German Malinois who was the sweetest most active boy ever so I figured I knew what I was getting into. She’s so sweet and I love her so much. 7-8 times out of 10 I get her to go potty outside, but those few times I miss it she gets in so much trouble with my mom, who yells at her. I think I just need to have patience with her because she’s only a little puppy and I misread her signals all the time. It’s not her fault and she’s trying her best. My mom on the other hand thinks I need to yell more. I understand being strict, but yelling is something I don’t want to do. I already accidentally kick and throw her when she bites a little too hard, I don’t want to just yell and hit. She’s just gonna be like this until she’s older and even then she’ll still be a handful. I have her on a schedule for going potty. Every half hour we (are supposed to) go outside. Now I don’t always have the time because I’m in school but I try my best. I genuinely think that the schedule is working and that eventually we’ll be okay. Although I am diagnosed with major depressive disorder and that probably affects how I’m raising her. I couldn’t take failing her earlier and was crying my eyes out. My poor girl just wanted to play but then she was comforting me. She should be able to play without someone crying because they’re not good enough. Am I screwing her up? Should I give her to someone who will treat her better?

Can the Flue pass from Human's to cat's?

Been at home quarantining the last 4 days with a bad case of the flue (Covid test was negative), the problem is that i live in a little matchbox unit and i have a pet cat.

My family live a 1000 kilometres away so i can't dump him on them for a few days.

He seems fine and healthy but I'm paranoid, at some point in time he's probably going to come into contact with something i put germs on.

Need to get rid of fleas

So my boyfriend’s dog has fleas he’s had them for weeks. We washed him with flea shampoo head first then to tail so they don’t get in his ears and that was weeks ago. He recently found fleas on him the other night he gave him a bath again a lot of fleas came out and now today he found more fleas and one on his ear and his ears red.

I really don’t want his ear to get infected or him to be suffering with itching constantly and I don’t know what to do to get rid of them all and keep them gone.

How to get my roommate's cats to leave my cat and I alone sometimes?

I have a 5F cat, roomie has a 5M and 4M cat. The 5M and my girl don't get along, but Ashe seems to like the 4M and they play tag a lot. I've been living here for about a year now.

Problem is, roomie's boys adore me. I know I can't stop them from eating my cat's food or using her litterbox, but I really wish that they weren't following me from room, crying if I commit a mortal sin of locking the door or refusing to hold them (they're literally have hour long tantrums).

Since about a month moving in, they've lost all interest in my roommate and they'll completely ignore her! She tries to play with them, and they still choose me. They also come to me for food time, and want to sleep in my arms at night.

I just want to be able to shut the door and give my girl some love/play. But if they're in the same room and I start to pay attention to her, the other two come over. If I lock her and myself in my room, they'll WAIL because they want me to play with them.

They're both sweet boys and it tears my heart in half to even imagine ignoring them, but if that's what it take, I guess? I feel bad for Ashe, because she deserves the love :(

MISSING / potentially STOLEN cat…seeking advice😔

Hey guys, I’m in a horrible situation that I would hope no one has to endure but it seems to be very common. My cat is a door dasher and she bolted out the front door on the night of the 24th when I was coming back home from a friends house. My friend was coming in with me because I was sending them home with some cake I made the day prior. Since they were coming in after me and took a little while to make their way in, the were super apologetic about letting my cat get out (which she would’ve done anyway, but I didn’t want them to feel bad so I said it’s fine & began explaining how this isn’t uncommon behavior for her). Anyway, after I packed the cake in a container for them, I saw my cat in our front yard when they were driving away. I stood outside for about 10 mins coercing her to come in but she wasn’t having it. I decided to check back in with her about 20 mins later thinking that she’d be ready to come in (she’s an indooor cat but she like to spend time outside but never longer than a couple hours).

To make a long story short…after repeatedly checking outside, I never found her that night. It’s been 6 days now and I’m worried sick. I can’t eat or sleep and I now I hold the reputation of being the crazy neighbor driving / walking around in the dead of the night calling my cats name and shaking a treat bag around. I put her cat carrier outside with some of my dirty laundry in it, I’ve put her cat litter outside, I left my garage door cracked in case she wants to sneak in, I put flyers up on mail boxes and even on peoples doors.

HERES MY MAIN CONCERN FOR WORRY: Someone has been repeatedly taking down my missing cat posters on 1 specific mailbox. I know it’s not a legal issue because putting flyers on mail boxes where I live isn’t illegal (plus they’re leaving all the other flyers up and only taking my missing cat posters). I’ve put up a total of 8 posters in a span of 4 days and they’ve all been removed. We have security cameras outside our house and I can barley make out 1 person kind of pacing around the corner where the mail box is but I can’t actually see them taking the flyer. My cat is a bengal and she’s soooo friendly, almost to a fault, but I’m convinced this person has my cat. I’m planning on filing a stolen pet report tomorrow morning but I kind of just want to stake out the mailbox and see if I can catch this person in the act. I have no idea how to confront them if I do or even what I could say to them. Am I being crazy or are my concerns justified? I really just need advice, what would you do in this situation?

would it be a bad or good idea to keep a pillow my kitten has already peed on and make it into his dedicated pee pillow so he doesn’t pee on any other new stuff?

as the title states, i have an 8 month kitten (hes not neutered yet) who has been peeing on a lot of my things lately. i stopped leaving things out that he could pee on but today i noticed he peed on my pillow. i was going to just throw it away but i was wondering if i keep this pillow out would it be a good or bad idea? my idea is that he’ll keep peeing on that pillow instead of anything else or anything new. thoughts? ideas?

Cat and Inappropriate Urination

Ah, boy. This’ll be a long one.

So I adopted a kitten just a little over a year ago. We had some inappropriate urination issues that drove me absolutely insane for about three or four months. Then it suddenly stopped. Now it’s suddenly a thing again and has been going on for around two months.

She’s been to the vet for a urinalysis each and every time this issue has popped up. Always has a clean bill of health and vet agrees that at this point it sounds like a behavioral issue. My roommate’s cat popped up with a UTI around the same time the urinating problem started and for a moment, we thought that perhaps that correlated with why my cat suddenly stopped using the box. Unfortunately, even after treatment and replacing the boxes, no dice.

This is where things get tricky.

She only urinates on my hardwood floors, and only in front of doors. Front door, back door, garage door, bathroom door, you name it. We’ve tried blocking off some of these entrances to the best of our ability, but considering they’re walkways, our attempts are poor at best. In addition to this, we just recently had a cat sitter visit the house while we were gone with family for Thanksgiving. We apologized for the urination problem in advance just to find out she had no problems at ALL while we were gone. Uhhh, what?

She has gone back to urinating on my floor and it’s night two of being back home.

Now, we brought my boyfriend’s dog with us when we went out of town. My next best guess now is that my cat is feeling stressed out by the dog. The dog avoids the cat like the plague and we’ve never really seen any aggressive behavior between the two, but after all is said and done, this seems to be the most probable. The weird part is my boyfriend and his dog moved in back in July, so there were no urination problems for about three months after they moved in. I’m lost at what to do or how to go about treating this now. We are both diehard for our animals - it is much more likely for him to move out before either of us considered rehoming. So now what?

Dog owners, please keep a handle on your dogs

If you're a dog owner & you leave your dog in the front yard if your dog routinely escapes out of your backyard or if you have your dog in your garage, with you & the dog isn't leased when the door is open you are an irresponsible owner period I don't care how "well trained" your dog is when they see something they want your training is not going to stop them keep a handle on your animal because I hate to see them get hit by a car, run away from home, or killed because they ran towards someone who has a weapon

My foster dog is in heat and I need advice

I'm fostering a shepherd cross about 1.5 years, she getting spay later in December, but she's in heat right now. She's been trying to mount and hump me any time I sit or lay down, when I push her away she nozzles in and nips at me, almost like she's saying "hey let's make puppies", like she doesn't understand I'm a woman and human. She's been bleeding and I can tell she's uncomfortable.

Anyways, I need advice on deterring the humping. I've never had a dog that humped or a dog in heat before.

My cat sheds an excessive amount no matter what we do

My cat sheds 24/7, 365 days a year. I can't pet her because I get a huge mess of hair with each stroke, which never seems to lessen after long grooming sessions.

She has short, fine hair but a very dense coat, similar to a chinchilla (if she gets wet, it takes hours to dry in the spots she can't reach). Her fur feels soft and healthy, despite the fact that none of it seems to be attached to her body. She begs me to brush her with the slicker brush every dayand I dobut even after an hour of grooming I'm still getting wads of fur. But her coat doesn't seem to get any thinner nor does she stop shedding; it's as if she has an endless supply of hair under her skin.

Possible reasons? Well, she's an older cat and has kitty arthritis so she doesn't spend a lot of time grooming herself. She has a flea allergy but she still sheds after we give every animal flea medicine. We tried different foods in case she has food allergies, but they didn't seem to help (now shes back on cat chow + the occasional leftover w/d can). She's also had callous/horns on her paw pads for a while, they've never gotten any bigger. Besides arthritis, shedding, and occasional urinary problems (if anyone knows how to stop her from peeing on my clothes, that advice would also be appreciated) she seems pretty normal.

Is there anything else I should try? She's a lover (and a biter) and it makes me sad that I can't pet her with my hands.

Dog won’t eat. She is starving.

My sister’s dog is refusing to eat. She started showing a decreased appetite about two weeks ago. She is rapidly declining, and we don’t know what to do or what is wrong.

Her dog is a beabull, and she is about 20 months old. She usually has a lot of energy and loves to eat (she is mostly bulldog). However, she suddenly stopped showing as much interest in food. My sister was on top of it – she took her to the vet really quickly and has kept taking her back.

The vet cannot figure out what is wrong with her. They have had us try many different food options. We started with rice and chicken; she ate that for a bit before refusing to eat pretty much anything. We get her to eat a nibble here and there, but for the most part, she turns her nose at all food (even treats). She will even back away from food.

The vet has run an unusually high amount of tests with all negative results. They said she has colitis, a swollen liver, and nucleated red blood cells, but they don’t know the cause. She’s seen three different vets, and they all have said it’s not allergies.

She has been on some medicine to increase her appetite, kill infection, and make her go potty. She had a few days where she was throwing up, but we think that was a reaction to one of the medicines.

We don’t know what to do. She doesn’t have much time left because she refuses to eat, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation.

I’m sorry if I’m in the wrong sub.

What should I do about my roommate not being a good dog owner?

I posted recently, but I just moved in with a roommate and she has a dog. I knew this before moving in and was fine with it. I have what I believe is a fairly common opinion that if you think you are responsible enough to have a dog, you need to be willing to take care of it. This includes taking it on walks, letting it out, not leaving it for long periods of time. She left the house before 8am today and it is 6pm now.....she has not been home to let the dog out. I am an animal lover so it pains me to see an animal go this long without care. I have let her out in the past and I don't think any dog should have an accident or have to hold it, but she is NOT my responsibility.

My roommate knows this but when I told her I was home and asked if the dog would be okay she said "oh yea, I'm going to the gym after work, do you think you could let her out?" Again, I like animals but this is not my responsibility. When I get home from my day of work I want to sit down and relax, not have to take a dog out and clean up their shit. This is the exact reason I don't have a dog in my early 20s with a full time M-F job. I don't want to keep offering to let her out and keep having this be a habit because I think my friend needs to learn this is a big commitment. So I am wondering if this is a situation where I can say something about how I feel, or if the dog is SOL and has to deal with her owner being gone for 10+ hours in the day.

Homemade cat food ideas? (Without supplements)

I know I know. "B-But supplements are necessary!" I simply don't have access to a billion different supplements. I don't know if its my country or my town or what. But I dont think that kind of thing is available for sale here. (ordering online is just not an option either)

I talked to my vet about what he thinks I should do for a homemade diet and he kind of just pointed me in the direction of his dry food that he has for sale because the dry food here is kind of the only thing that has all the necessary supplements already in it. (taurine etc) I asked if there was any other way of getting taurine and everything he needs and he said no not really and that dry food is the best. And that I should feed him a mix of cooked meats and rice and kibble etc 5 days of the week and then 2 days raw diet. (he talked about how raw is really good for them but the possible harmful bacterias is a pretty big risk so its best to keep it to a minimum).

I believe him, but there seems to be a lot of disagreement online and everytime i look for a recipe, they ALL have supplements. So if anyone has any recipes that has been healthy for your cat and has everything they need without the supplements, please please let me know. Thank you!

How many time before leaving a cat for the first time at home while being away ( with other people taking care of her of course)

So for the story , I was about to get a cat on October but because of health problem, I still don't have a cat and I planned going at a friend's house for a week for holidays. So , I think I'll have to cancel the holidays , the cat isn't here yet and I won't have any time to see if she feels good with me.But I was wondering, how much should I wait before , hypothetically, leaving the house and letting my loved ones taking care of her for a few days? I don't plan to leave soon but I'm curious for the future and that's very important to me to be sure she is fine. ( I'll probably introduce her to my mom, then my brother and finally my sister in law later so she could feel safe with them too?)

It's my first time having a cat on my own and I want the best for her so ...how do you de with cat when you need to go somewhere when your cat can't follow?

Dad gave us an unwanted dog. What do I do?

I am currently a sophomore in highschool and I’m in a tough situation. My dad brought home a dog despite everyone else in my family saying no when he asked us if we wanted one. My dad works from 6am to 7:30 pm, and my mother and brother (who both work) are largely unwilling to care for a dog they didn’t want. I also did not want the dog but I still feel bad. I also have a busy schedule where I leave for school at 6:50 am and don’t get back until 4-6 pm depending on the day. Currently my dad just keeps him in the garage all day and he looks very depressed. I’ve asked him multiple times to give the dog to a family that can actually take care of him but he is stubborn and says that “it’s his dog and I shouldn’t interfere.” Right now my only idea is to let the dog out into the neighborhood and say it got out and just hope that a more loving family finds it.

Searched entire house for new cat who is hiding

I am fostering a cat to see how it goes for a month additionally because I’m allergic and want to see how it affects me. (No issues for now)

The cat seemed affectionate with me at the shelter but when I brought her home she was hiding which makes sense and I am trying to give her space. However I woke up today and she wasn’t hiding behind the fridge which she did yesterday.

I assume she change locations but I’ve legit searched the entire (small) house and looked at tons of Reddit post on where the cat could be hiding.

I think she touched some dry food the other day but I just laid out some wet food to entice her but I’m kind of worried she got outside. Is there anything else I can do to try to find her? Starting to slightly worry.

Advice needed!

Really weird situation going on in my neighborhood. A man (who we’ve had to call the police on before for child abuse) just brought a dog home. We’ve never seen the dog before. He put the dog on a tether but didn’t nail it down. The dog, obviously, ran away. The guy sees that and goes back in the house. He comes back out and notices the dog came back. He goes back in the house. Now, the dog is all over the neighborhood and on my front porch. The guy can see that the dog is loose but keeps going back inside. It’s like he wants it to run away. What should I do? It’s 30° here.

my older cat is jealous

Hello, hello!!

I have two cats -- one is 2 years old and the other one is 8 months old. I have had my older cat, Anoushka, since she was 3 months old and Luna, the younger one, only got introduced to Anoushka back in June of this year. I introduced them properly and Anoushka groomed Luna, played with her, spent time with her overall -- all was great. We moved to a new place in October this year, and Luna got neutered, which was when I found out that a prolonged time at the vet alters cats' scents and makes them think it's a brand new cat in the house; you can imagine how fun it was to reintroduce those two, but in all fairness -- it ended within a day.

What I have been noticing the past few days is that my older cat, Anoushka, tends to growl and swat at my little one, Luna, whenever Luna is around me. They still play, they still eat together, they groom each other and all of that, but Anoushka would growl at her if Luna is getting attention from me. She doesn't do this with my mum. It's getting a bit ridiculous because Luna would be spending time with me and Anoushka would come later on and swat at her so she can take her place. Luna takes it and leaves, and while she doesn't seem that disheartened -- I don't really want this kind of thing to continue.

Do you guys have any tips on how to manage this kind of jealousy? I give both of them equal amounts of attention, I give them space, the same kind of treatment and treats and I just don't understand what changed. Any and all advice will be much appreciated! Thank you!

Tips for leaving kitten alone

Hey all!

Recently adopted a 13 week old rag doll kitten who is absolutely adorable and a ball of energy (and cuddles).

There will be a few times this month we will have to leave our kitten for more than an hour. A concert, a wedding and a few family parties.

The concert and parties will be a max of 4 hours gone. The wedding will be around 6 hours or so (we will have someone check on him for the wedding).

What are some best tips for leaving a kitten alone?

Will rescues allow a 21 year old to adopt a kitten?

i'm 21, i live alone in an apartment building that allows pets. i work only 20hrs a week and make around $1k a month, my parents pay my rent/groceries/phone bill so that 1k is purely spending/saving money for me.

i'm home almost all the time and i'm very responsible. i've grown up with cats, for my entire life we have always had at least one. so i fully understand how much of a commitment they are and how to properly take care of them. i have a job where i live and i very rarely go away.

It's Christmas season. Adopt, don't shop.

Specifically from a local shelter.

I know this is probably annoying to hear but we always have tons of pets that we know the personalities of and can help fit into your home without the guesswork of buying from a breeder or pet store. Let's get some babies home for the holidays.

Ex wanting visitational rights to my dog

So I am not quite sure how to go about this. My ex is now messaging me about wanting to have visitational rights to see my dog once a month. I got my dog when we were still together (and living together) and broke up when my dog was 8 months old and I moved to a different city. He is now messaging me wanting to see the dog on a regular basis when I do not want any contact with him whatsoever for reasons I do not feel comfortable sharing. I paid for his adoption, it is my name on all legal documents (microchip, vet registration and insurance), I pay for his food and other expenses and take care of him on a daily basis. My ex is mentioning bringing a lawyer into this to give him legal rights to see my dog once a month...

How should I go about this? Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thank you!

Any pet owners have a dog that behaves very human?

My mother decided to adopt a chow chow from a nearby mall where I used to live in August 2019. That was the day I met the cutest creature I have ever seen, a dog that my family would name Jenny. For the past 2 years, my dog Jenny has taken the role of a little sister for me and my sister, and a fourth child for my mother (My mother’s first child was stillborn before she had my older sister and then me). She also sees my mother as her mother and would follow her around like children would with their moms.

Jenny is very smart, being able to open doors and understand what people are saying. Although, like a little child, she is spoilt and demands what she wants with tantrums and loud barks. Sometimes I forget that she is even a dog. The interactions Jenny has with me and other humans is similar to that of a child with an older person. As strange as it may be, she understands human language and conversely, humans that she’s met can understand what she tries to convey through facial expressions and noises.

I want to know if any other pet owners own animals that act human and could communicate with you through some form of way. Domesticated pets really are fantastic animals and I would love to know other people’s experiences with their pets.

Need help figuring out cats food issue.

My cat has a food intolerance of some kind. Ive never been able to figure out what the cause was.

I've tried a bunch of limited ingredient foods but they all had the same effect on her. Her poop was always really soft and a mix of light brown and light green colors. The green is what really worries me. That is her only symptom.

I've tried different kinds of fish, chicken, and turkey, and rabbit.

The only one that made her poop normal was the rabbit. The turkey one I tried had the exact same ingredients as the rabbit except for it being turkey. That is what makes me suspect its the protein causing her issue.

I dont think she really likes the rabbit kind though and I also wish I could figure out the cause for her food intolerance.

Im just lost. Can a cat really have an intolerance to all poultry and all fish? That seems like it's unlikely.

Ive thought about trying those digestive foods too, but my mind is always thinking they wont do anything if her reaction is to the proteins since those all contain chicken, fish, etc and we've tried limited ingredient diets already. I dont know what the difference would be.

Any suggestions? Also, should the fact that her poop has a lot of green in it cause any more worry than if it was just soft?

Not ready for a dog

I was looking at animals for adoption, as one does....and this person stated that if the dog didn't get adopted by the end of the month (2 days away) they were going to have to put the dog down. I checked and this is legal so there is nothing to do to stop them except for offer to adopt the dog myself, which i have done and i am now waiting for a reply to see if they still need it adopted or if (fingers crossed) someone else had chosen to adopt it. If i do have to adopt this dog i will need to figure out how to fence my backyard ASAP!!! And i am kind of freaking out, i have never had a dog,i have pet-sat and walked them and i love dogs but i wasn't planning on getting a dog right now , my life is kind of hectic atm. Also, i live with my family and i know they aren't going to be keen on it so it is going to be a big issue. And it is a huge life style change.... But i can't say no, because otherwise the dog dies, and i won't be that person who lets a dog die. So i guess i am just waiting on this owner to see if i get the dog. I have no idea what i am doing....

I no longer want my cat- Feel terrible about it.

I've had my cat for a little over a year. Let a close friend of mine keep him for a few weeks to mouse out his place. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed not having him around. No cat fur, no allergies, the smell of litter gone and no zoomies at night.

Don't get me wrong, I love my cat but recently I've been craving a bond that's more rewarding and less of an inconvenience. I feel bad looking at him having these thoughts. I know he relies on me heavily for FOOD. And just that, which is also another reason I think it may not be that big of a deal. For cats this is more Primal. Is the bond that deep to him? Can he feel rejection and abandonment? Smh.

How to make my cat stop waking me up every few hours? It’s driving me nuts, I need to sleep :(

My cat is a 6 year old flamepoint Siamese. He’s very fat (last time I checked 16 pounds) and I have him on a diet and he’s going absolutely nuts about it. He now refuses to let me sleep for even just a few hours without waking me up by running on top of me, scream meowing, banging on things in the house, ripping things up, fighting with the other cat. You name it.

I have him on a very strict schedule with the diet that hasn’t changed in the entire 2 months he’s been on it but for some reason he’s getting a lot crankier about it. He also gets very aggressive about his food now and will bully the other cat off hers if I don’t separate them at feeding time.

He’s driving me nuts. I’m starting a new job soon and absolutely can’t afford for him to be making me sleep deprived every night. He KNOWS he doesn’t get fed at midnight. I never feed him at midnight. But what did he do? Woke me up at midnight begging for food.

I really don’t know what to do. He’s eating 1/3 cup of food daily. I was keeping it at 1/2 but he seemed to just stay at the same weight and never lose so I dropped it down to half the scoop in the morning and half at night.

Am I not feeding him enough? I went by the label on my food container for big cats.

Thanks for your help

My kitten beat giardia!

My kitten went through 2 rounds of giardia treatment. I did everything the vet recommended the first time (wipe her booty after going potty, administer panacur, clean her litter box daily, steam clean/lysol everything at the end), but that didn't work.

Since I was so stressed out trying to figure out what to do when I found out she still had it after the first round, I wanted to share my experience and what worked for me in hopes that it could help someone else. I couldn't find a ton of help when I looked before.

The second time, we got metronidazole and panacur together. Here's what we did:

  1. Kitten got metro at morning and night and panacur in the middle of the day. She hated the metro as liquid no matter how I administered it (in wet food, in pill treats, straight in her mouth) so I recommend asking for a pill form. It was like torture giving it to her. She totally didn't mind the panacur in any form, but she didn't like me forcing her mouth open to put it in her mouth. She was totally fine with me mixing it in wet food.

  2. Probiotics! I gave her probios because fortiflora is so dang expensive, but who knows how effective probios was. (Now I just give her fortiflora - why to be discussed at the end). I found online that there is a particular probiotic strain that is believed to be effective against giardia and help the kitty's immune system fight it. (L. bacillus and/or L. casei I think?)

  3. Used those aluminum baking dishes and a little bit of litter so I could toss it every time she pooped. I tried shredded paper to be cheap, but the pan was too light so my kitten pushed it over :( it seemed to be very upsetting to her to fall over when she was trying to potty.

  4. Confined her to a bathroom and removed any textiles (like rug, shower curtain, my towels). I put some old towels in there and a bed that could be thrown in the laundry/dryer once a day. I cleaned the whole house once (not really as strictly as I did the first time - I only really steamed the carpets and lysoled/put in dishwasher or laundry things that she would put in her mouth or touch a lot, like toys, cat blankets, and scratching posts). I used a 10:1 water:bleach solution in the bathroom each day. I wasn't super diligent in cleaning every inch - but I made sure to clean around the litter box and her food/water. I steam cleaned in there only a couple of times. I put toys in there that could easily be cleaned. I replaced her toys once or twice per day, I can't recall. I sprayed the cardboard scratching post thing with the bleach solution each day. I recommend buying a steam mop to steam carpets frequently if you plan on letting them roam in carpet areas. They're not that expensive and way less uncomfortable than a steam vacuum.

  5. Plastic dishes. I replaced her food/water dish twice a day. I bleached the surrounding area when cleaning each day.

  6. Thoroughly wiped her butt after potty. I used a dry shampoo spray and spray that on a paper towel. I got it slightly damp then rubbed on her butt pretty strongly. With her long fur, I couldn't get all of the poop off, but somehow it was enough.

  7. She had gotten surgery, so she had a cone of shame on. I think this really helped with minimizing her ability to lick her butt before I could run over to clean her up. Not a bad idea to buy a cone for this treatment.

  8. Because of #7, I couldn't bathe her until the end of her treatment. I wanted to bathe her a few times, as others recommended. Seemed to be fine.

I want to thank the OP of this link since I got most cleaning ideas from them: https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/l2e84n/giardia_for_the_third_time_help/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Unfortunately, my kitty still has some soft poop. She had a full panel done on her stool and she doesn't have any other parasites or problematic bacteria, so the vet just thinks she has a sensitive tummy (common for her breed) or has continuing effects from the giardia early on. She still gets probiotics almost daily. Hopefully this doesn't happen to your cat, but I just wanted to warn you all.

Good luck with your pet giardia journey! You can do this if I can!

I don’t want to let my dog be sick, seen multiple vets

Symptoms... she licks her paws, she walks around the deck and licks the ground sometimes... her mouth sometimes does this weird chattering thing and it looks involuntary but unsure. Not a lot but sometimes she shakes her head around but her ears seem to be fine. The biggest thing to me,, inside our house she will sometimes get to doing this insane panting. She’s lazy girl. She’s not tired or hot. She will start doing it out of the blue, almost like she’s extremely anxious. When she gets to panting every 5-10 seconds she does this weird gulp. 4 years old, mixed breed off a farm litter.. it’s possible she could be a little overweight from being lazy but she doesn’t eat too much. She sleeps the majority of the time... sometime when she breathes also she has a slight whine in her breathing. And she yawns a lot when she starts panting. I’ve seen 3 vets who almost just kinda looked at me crazy. One said stomach issues, the other said nothing and the other said could be a natural throat thing. I know it sounds weird but I’ve had her since a babe and I feel I can tell when something is wrong. I feel something is wrong. She is naturally anxious and always has been very much so. Could it be an intense anxiety disorder? Stomach problems? Stomach doesn’t seem to explain the chattering and weird gulping. I know this is jumbled but if she is sick I don’t want to let her sit here and be sick. I don’t know where to take her or what to ask for. I have an appt scheduled w my vet in a week for blood work but not sure what else to do. I’ve felt something has been off for about 2 months or so give or take. Anyone of my friends or family who is around her looks at me crazy when I ask if they think she’s anxious... but I know my baby. Any help I would more than greatly appreciate

Is this neglect?

Someone I know has an animal which I feel like they neglect. Most of my research into animal neglect is much more serious then current circumstances. I met this cat a few months back and it’s parents were barely around. When I mean barely I mean they would house sit for multiple days and leave the cat without their care. They also will dog/cat sit in their room when back home which also leads to them mostly ignoring the cat. They did not want to get the cat neutered until other people had to convince them and book an initial appointment without their help. This kitty had to be given an automatic feeder because they weren’t around and someone else cleans the litter. I feel awful because they don’t play with or really interact with the cat and he is mostly there for them to post on Snapchat. I am a huge animal lovers so I am pretty biased when it comes to the cat but I feel like he needs a better home. Other people living with the cat also agree that he should be rehomed. The actual owner thinks there is nothing wrong with being an absent because it’s a cat and can be independent but I think that if you are going to get a pet you need to take care of it. Please lmk if you think this is neglect or not.

Getting cat in Studio Apartment? Should i get a kitten, young cat, or adult?

i'm almost 21 years old and live alone in a studio apartment. i'm currently on a medical leave of absence from school due to depression, my psychologist suggested a cat as an emotional support animal. i work and make about $600 a paycheck (my parents pay my rent/groceries/phone) and my parents said they'd be willing to help out with any extremely expensive vet bills, so money isn't a worry.

i just worry that it's too small? i'm home most of the time, i only work 15-20hrs a week.

Should I put my dog down or is it too early

Hi Everyone,

My dog is 10. She has a Mass tumor underneath her eye that has gotten so big that you cannot see her eye anymore. It is very sad to see her like this. It keeps getting bigger very slowly and it has been over 3 months now. She is on pain medications. We didn't get it surgically removed because they said she has lung cancer so it would only be for her comfort. She is always trying to scratch her tumor so we have sine coned her. It is dripping tiny bits of blood daily out of her eye.

However, she is still eating, playful, and pretty active. She doesn't look like she has slown down. That is why I am having difficulty scheduling her euthanasia. My family is also content with putting her down at this point. I am also crying everyday when I am looking at her at this stage. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also, doctor said she would pass away 6 months with Chemo included but we haven't done chemo and she hasn't slowed down 3 months after.

TLDR;

My Dog has tumours/cancer around her eye and lungs. She is still active and living normally after having it for months but she is now blind on one eye. Should I put her down or wait until she is less active?

Any advice/help: Bunny Lop (Brownie) and Cat (Cleo)

I tried to search everywhere but there seems to be a lack of info about having them together. Both of them are indoor pets and dislike going outside of our house. I recently got a kitten and she is not agressive in any way, but I am aware she is a predator and my bunny is a prey and therfore have the instinct to run away.

I introduced them slowly, however, when it came to the big reveal, they ran away from each other. Brownie has territory on the living room so I let them meet each other on neutral territory.

Overtime, Cleo did not pay mind having Brownie anymore. She was ok with him, but Brownie on the other hand was stomping away and is super stressed and I feel bad. I tried everything I can. By giving him a secure place and closed Cleo off the living room. What should I do? I'm scared he'll die due to stress :( I really love Brownie and I appreciate every help and advice to help him and Cleo as well so they could get along.

Do I need to buy flea medicine for my cat every month?

So a while ago my cat seemed to have some fleas under his mouth and so I bought one of those edible thingies that remove fleas but today I was playing with him and I notice a black spot in his mouth and when I try to see if it was a flea it started moving, and then my cat tries to bite me if I try removing it myself.

Older cat - Dental Extraction - Any other options?

I have a 13 yr old cat that vet said has bad plaque (or tartar, don't recall) buildup in a far back tooth. It's infected and, he said, should be extracted. If not, the infection will probably keep coming back. I'm absolutely terrified of putting my old gal under anesthesia and am trying to figure out if there are any other options.

I'm so upset at myself for not being more proactive with her dental health. My first cat had such good teeth, that I didn't realize it could become on issue. I have since purchased several feline dental care products (including mini toothbrush), but am wondering if this will do anything to help. I just want to try anything and everything before I go for the extraction. I've had a rough year and don't need to deal with another loss right now....

Any tips, pointers are appreciated.

New puppy grandma here. Indoor dog delivered 5 live puppies yesterday (surprise!) Mama is super restless. Puppies are sleeping/crying, mama keeps panting, seems panicked. Keeps moving pups around. We bought newborn puppy formula and nursing kits, heating pad. No luck feeding. Vets closed till Monday. Advice?

Question for foster homes/rescues- how do you pay for vet bills?

Long story short. I took in a family members cat under the pretense I would watch her until they purchased a home. Mind you, they moved across county and the kitty is around ten years old. My five year old and I drove over 250 miles to pick her up and we were so excited to “foster” her fluffy self. The next week, the family member asked me how I liked my new cat.

Truthfully, I was thrilled to have such a sweet and loving kitty added to the bunch. What isn’t so great is at ten she hasn’t seen a vet since she was spayed as a kitten. Also, she was a feral kitten and remained outside most of her life. When I asked what type of litter she was accustomed to, i was they hadn’t purchased litter in over six years. She is now strictly indoor and thankfully she has no desire to go outside. Anyways. Lol

I’ve already spent around 400 on getting her up to date on shots, nail and hair trim, health exam, microchipped, tested for parasites and feline leukemia. The vet was surprised to have had such great results but was very concerned about her teeth. She is missing a few and the front teeth are brown and potentially dead/decaying below the surface. They want to do a senior blood panel and a tooth X-ray. Not including cleaning or potential tooth removal, I’m looking at a minimum of 1500. I REALLY can’t front that, and her previous owners won’t. So my question is what is the best route of action? Any suggestions or even organization recommendations??? Or is my best bet a kitty medical credit card- (but what does that apr look like)?

separating my cats, thoughts?

Hello, I am currently in college and my sister is a senior who’s about to go off to college. We have two cats who are siblings and used to love each other/ cuddle with each other but now all they do is fight. Is it okay to separate them, ones goes with my sister and the other goes with me, or is that too damaging even though they fight like ALL the time? Thanks!

How can I help my dog recover from a stroke?

Our family dog, about 7 or 8 years old just had a stroke/mini stroke. Half of his face was paralyzed and he couldn't walk straight. Honestly the scariest thing. But it was short lived, only 5-10 minutes (thank god) He seems to be fully recovered but I'm still worried, Once it happens once will it happen again, how can I help him during and after this happens? Or, even though there's no after affects should we still take him to the vet ASAP? Any advice would be appreciated:D

Pets not allowed on second floor but…

I live on the second floor of a condo that my mom owns and rents out to me. Because i work from home and because I work from 9-6 every day, i figured a little kitten would be a great way to help me not feel so lonely. So I went out and adopted one and he’s such a gem! Only recently I found out that our association rules that pets are not allowed on the second floor. The guy that handles our Association, who is constantly on the premises fixing things or just checking the premises is very nosy and tells the board EVERYTHING he finds so he doesn’t miss a chance to fine people or give warning or even escalate things if people don’t wanna comply. My issue is that 2 of my second floor neighbors have pets on the premises, they’re always walking them on the property and they’re always hanging out on their balcony, so the guy knows my neighbors have pets when the association states they shouldn’t have them. They’ve had them for years so I figured me having a small kitten wouldn’t be much trouble, until I found out about the association rule. I don’t want to have to hide my kitten and worry about whatever actions he wants to take against us just because I got a kitten to help me with my loneliness. How can I set up a case to present and defend my having a kitten in my condo, which my mother owns and she accepts my kitten being there, and not have to worry about him taking bigger actions towards us while our neighbors also have pets and they’ve done nothing about them. Also, giving my kitten away is not an option, I will definitely fight to keep this kitten, who is doing no harm to anything outside my own home. Thank you in advance!

Good friend recently lost her dog. As a gift I would like to commission an artwork of her and her little man together. Looking for ideas to point me in the right direction.

The loss is fairly recent but enough time has passed that I feel she would welcome this gift as opposed to being overcome with grief. Any pointers for trusted artists who can draw a pet and their owner together? Thank you in advance!

Mixed my cats food with dog food

I feed my 7 year old cat Purina Beyond salmon and wild rice kibble. I accidentally bought Purina Beyond salmon, pumpkin, and rice mix for DOGS and mixed it with my cats food thinking it was the same thing!

I didn’t notice it until now. It wasn’t a huge bag that i mixed in, it was one of the smallest ones they sell.

Will my cat be okay? Should i throw out ALL of the mixed kibble and buy a fresh new bag?

Would it be a bad idea to adopt a cat in my situation?

I’m a parent to an almost 4 yo, I also work and I’m a student. I never realized how much my son loved animals until we visited family and he was chasing the dogs around the house because he wanted to pet them. He was also very gentle. I asked him if he likes cats or dogs and he kept saying he likes cats better.

I spent the night at my cousin’s and she adopted a kitten a few months ago. I really enjoyed the kitten being around, so I’m deciding whether or not I should adopt a cat that’s at least a year old.

Would it be a bad idea to adopt a cat in my situation? Should I wait it out longer until I graduate and get a full time job?

How can I be sure that a pet sitter is trustworthy?

I have a cat and I need to leave for 9 days and I can’t bring him with me. I’m considering hiring a pet sitter to look after him but I’m weary of giving a stranger access to my house. How can I make sure they are safe?

vet for cat with stomatitis

Hi sorry this is long but I really need help. I made a post yesterday about how I took my cat to the vet and was told she's showing signs of stomatitis. She's seven months old and I took her to vetco because I only thought she needed a booster shot. I was told we should aim for a dental cleaning in January and I'm wondering if I should look into finding a different vet for the actual cleaning since I don't know if vetco is reliable. I'm overwhelmed because this is my first cat and I'm a teenager, I just want to do what's best for her but I've never been in this situation before. Since I'm a full time student I'm also trying to take cost into consideration. I'm honestly so overwhelmed and don't know how long I should wait to get a second opinion/ if I should get a second opinion. I just want her to be okay. Please help!!!

Bringing fleas from one house to mine

So im visiting family this weekend, and I noticed I saw one flea on the couch. They have 2 dogs that don't really come into the main house a lot, they mostly have been in the sun room with a doggy door that goes outside.

I dont treat my cats for fleas at my house since they never go outside.

How likely is it that fleas may jump on my clothes or body and I carry them home and into my house? How can I mitigate the chance of this happening?

Also, it's almost a 8 hour drive back home if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Cat problem in garden - I don't know what to do anymore

Warning: This'll be a long read since it's part vent and part advice seeking.

After being trapped in a small city apartment during the first year of the pandemic we moved this summer to have more space. We found an awesome flat in a 3 party house which comes with our own private garden (not shared between the whole house but exclusively ours) which we thought ideal for a dog.

There is no street alongside the garden but our house and the neighbouring house on 2 sides and other gardens at the other 2 sides which are seperated by a fence. When we moved in the garden wasn't tended for in about 10 years and was completely overgrown. We put a lot of hard work and time in it to turn it into our own little paradise with a fire place, veggie beds, a nice sitting area etc. and I am so fond of the garden.

Now here is the problem: There is a cat from this neighbourhood - I will call him Sir Ass in th following - which completely spoils the garden for my dog and therefore for us. My dog doesn't like cats and all the other cats in the neighbourhood just want no trouble so when we are in our garden they'll not show up. Not like Sir Ass. I swear to god this cat is a demon. It will show up immediately after we get in the garden and then tease my dog until he is out of his mind.

Freddy does not like cats so every time he sees Sir Ass he will charge at him. Sir Ass knows exactly where Freddy can't reach him and he will retreat just as much as neccessary and then sit there, meow and yowl and hiss at Freddy, walk up and down, get closer until Freddy charges at him again and retreat just enough so Freddy can't get him. If we humans shoo him away he will just go to the other side of the fence to the neighbours garden and stare at us but not run away. We tried to spray him with a water bottle but he doesn't care as well.

Now the problem is that the fence between ours and the neighbours garden is just 1,50m. Freddy usually would not run away but he could easily jump these fences when he runs after Sir Ass. Therefore we can never let our own dog in our own garden without a 10m leash which will not allow him to reach the fences.

Since Sir Ass won't leave Freddy alone we also had no success with desensibilisaton training. Whenever we had some sort of success where Freddy ignored the cat, that little motherfucker would not take it but start to provoke the shit out of Freddy, running across our garden at full speed or even walk up to Freddy. Sir Ass knows he just has to outrun the dog until the leash ends and he uses that knowledge to drive Freddy insane.

We only rent the place so we can't put up a higher fence (Technically we were allowed to but our landlord would apparently not pay for that so we'd spent about 2k for a fence around a garden which we don't even own.) And also that would not solve the problem because 99% of the time Sir Ass stays in the neighbouring gardens and teases Freddy through the fences. For that reason also spraying our garden with some pheromone stuff wouldn't really solve the problem since we can't just spray the neighbours gardens, too.

It got so bad that Freddy is so stressed whenever we go into the garden we can't enjoy it anymore. Freddy doesn't really want to go in the garden anymore, he hates this cat and is so frustrated he can't get him that the garden now is a "bad place" for him. I am so angry and desperate because I love this garden, I love being outside, I love working in it and I want Freddy to be able to just relax in the sun with me but this cat just ruins everything.

I spoke to the owner (grumpy old dude) but here it is very common to let your cat outside and he apparently won't lock it in the house just because it sometimes teases my dog.

I am at my wits end. Any advice?

Tips for cleaning an injured kitten

Hey there everybody =) TW for animal injury.
Theres a stray cat colony next to my house and one of the kittens (which I was already planning on keeping) was inside my moms car when she started the engine. Her tail ended up degloving and she broke her pelvis and popped out one of her legs from it's socket. Basically i'm just wondering if anyone has any tips on keeping her clean. She's already been to an emergency vet and we have an appointment on Monday to get her consulted for the surgeries she's going to be needing. I notice she's been going to the bathroom a lot. And usually it leaves her messy. So i've been trying to clean her as much as I can but it's really hard because she gets really feisty when I start cleaning her. Also I'm using wipes because I don't believe I can be giving her full baths right now with her tail injured like it is. (It still needs to be amputated) But it seems to just kinda be making her wet and honestly thats it. Doesn't seem to be cleaning her that much which is why I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for cleaning her better.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or stuff like that because my mom and I are doing the best we can to care for her and I just want to make sure we can do the absolute best we can :)

What is your view?

What do you think about people who mistreat their pets. They make them sleep outside, give them food when its late, don't shower them and most of all, they don't love them at all. Yet all these pets want is love and care. Tell us your view about this horrible act.

Never Realized Cats Could Be Like This

Since some recent events, two of my cats that I consider more standoff-ish (main coon mix wouldn't get on furniture or allow more than a few pets, tortie growled at anyone not my son and wouldn't allow any pets from me) have been snuggling more often or just being close and wanting to cuddle.

Today, I was having an emotional breakdown and crying in my bed in the dark. Then, I hear deep purring and the tortie was pushing my hands from my face and trying to e courage me to pet her. Next, main coon cuddles around my back and out his head across my neck. I've had dogs act like this when I'm not doing well, but never cats. Just wondering if anyone else has stories like this? I thought it was really interesting.
