Anyone have a good recommendation for a groomer who's experienced with Westies in New York City/Metro areas?
My boyfriend’s parents have a 3 year old Great Dane and for the last year she’s been peeing when people get home because she’s excited. I know small dogs usually do this so I’m wondering is she just peeing because she’s excited or could it be more like a bladder infection? She’s left outside when people aren’t home so it’s not like she’s holding her pee. His family also makes sure to be really calm when coming home, but she still pees.
Hi, I recently got a 8 week old puppy German shepherd lab mix and about 1 to 2 days after I got him he started to get very hyper then start going after my hand leg shorts basically anything he can bite I’ve got him chew toys, this only really happens when he gets super hyper, he the only dog I’ve ever had so I don’t know much, thank you!
Title + when the bigger cat gets on top, I break it up. They are currently 2 months and 5 months. What should I do? Will it stop? Do i separate them?
Illegal or animals that require a license to own dont count. I ask just out of curiosity to open up discussion, as someone who has dogs and cats but also snakes, tarantulas, and leeches. Personally, I think the leeches take the cake.
My Dad and I live on a small farm and we have 3 dogs, two terriers and a sheep dog. One of the little dogs has started running over to our neighbors house and she won't come home. Our neighbor has no dogs or animals of his own.
Our dog is not neglected or ill-treated but my dad definitely favors the other little terrier over her. We live on a farm and the dogs are used to lots of freedom. She has always been adventurous and she used to lead the other little terrier hunting. We had her sprayed in the hope that it would stop her wandering but it hasn't had that effect. At the same time, we don't want to keep her locked up all the time.
Is there anything we can do to make her want to stay with us? It's starting to feel like she's our neighbors dog!
I skinned my salmon before cooking it and I want to know if I can cook up the skin and cut it up for my cat. Safe?
She’s 7 weeks, had her for 3 days her dad was farel but her mom wasn’t. The lady who I got her from said a lot of the kittens were mean and skiddish. She’s not Mean, but she’s literally afraid of everything, I try to pet her she backs away, she hides underneath my bed, loud noises or any noise scares her, but she seems to like music
I noticed she slept next to my head at night, but she woke me up with meows at 6 am. It’s like the only time she isn’t meowing is when she’s sleeping. She’ll litterally meow when she’s using the litter box. I’ve bought her toys tried playing with her hold her close, it’s like I have to force her to let me pet her haha.
Idk if this is normal cat behavior I’ve just only dealt with super playful kitties that like to cuddle. She hates cuddles.
Will she come out of her shell? What should I do? She only has been in my room and bathroom and both of them are huge.
Took my cat to the vet early in the day where he got 2 shots. He seemed fine afterwards, walked normally, and ate. Around 6 hours later he seemed too weak to even walk and ended up taking a nap. This nap was different than most naps because if you approached him you could hear him purring and he would usually chirp to acknowledge how close you are: this time he was quiet: no purring, and when I approached him or picked him up, he began to growl and hiss.
He is in pain and I am worried. Is this a normal response? Both injections were given to the thighs. I wanted to carry him to my room to sleep with me but he refuses to be carried.
So I really want a dog, we always had at least 3 dogs at a time growing up and I loved them so much. Now that I've graduated college and make decent money I'm looking into getting a dog. However I live alone and work anywhere from 8-14 hours a day. Would it be possible for me to still get a dog? I also want a bigger dog like a lab or something similar but would love t be irresponsible of me to do so given my current situation?
Hello,
I am cat sitting and have two cats of my own. One of my cats and the cat being pet sit met each other and kinda stared at one another and are totally fine. However, my second cat is very curious about the new cat and goes straight up to him, putting his face in his face and yowls. My cat is low to the ground with ears back and even flopped down and showed his belly to the cat being pet sit... the other cat hissed at him yesterday but today when my cat went up and flopped down in front of him today he just stared. I expect cats to take a bit to get used to one another but I’m curious, are my cats yowls aggressive or neutral?
All cats are fixed.
I need some help with my cat. I've had her for almost a year now and I feel like I have done all I can for her yet she keeps attacking me. I've tried almost everything I can think of and what the vets have recommended to me and nothing seems to be working.
I've used positive reinforcement (i.e. treats) and negative reinforcement (i.e. no's and timeouts) to try to get her to stop. I've tried rearranging everything like my vet told me to do. I've tried spritzing her with water (she likes the water). I feed and water her on time, I play with her, I wait for her permission to give her pets, but she just won't stop attacking me.
A lot of people think what I'm describing is playful, but it's not. She will latch onto me with her front legs, bite into me, then start viciously scratching/kicking with her back legs to do me harm. Earlier this month, my cat did this to me on my right arm, and the bleeding lasted for about 30 minutes despite my best efforts for pressure. I have two pretty nasty scars now. Most recently, she cut me vertically down my wrist, and if it had been like what I had just described, I probably would have had to go to the hospital.
I've talked to my mom about this (she's really good with animals), and she has advised me to get rid of my cat. Honestly, I have been thinking about getting rid of her even before she had advised me to, but there are a few things that are holding me back from doing so:
If anyone has any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.
We found a soft tissue tumor on his elbow a few weeks back, and then yesterday when we did the biopsy they did some extra xrays and found some growths in his lungs. It doesn’t look good. Still waiting on the biopsy results after which we will discuss options with an oncologist, but i wanted to reach out to reddit and see if anyone has any advice to offer to help ease/prolong his final months/weeks/days?
We currently dose him with 32 mgs of CBD oil twice per day, and it’s been helping keep his appetite and spirits up. We’re in close proximity to Colorado so I’m looking into THC/CBD oils and tinctures, as well.
Anything and everything is helpful. Thanks!
So I learned a hard lesson.. last night my apartment building caught on fire and I had to leave my pets inside.. it was terrifying. The fire alarms went off around 2am so they woke me up from a deep sleep, and by then my apartment was already filled with smoke.
I jumped up and tried to find my cats but they were both hidden and I couldn’t really breathe or go searching for them. I grabbed my rabbit from his cage and went to my closet where I keep the carriers and realized they were buried. I would have had to stand there for a few minutes to get it out which is time I didn’t really have. So I just held him in my arms and left and ran down 8 flights of stairs. When I got outside several of my neighbours were there holding their cats and other pets as well. A lot of them had the same issue as me and couldn’t pull out their pet carriers fast enough.
In a situation like this a pet carrier can be important because 1. You don’t know how long you’re going to be outside waiting. It’s more comfortable for both you and your pet to not hold them by the hour 2. You risk losing them if you are holding them or have a harness on (which realistically in a fire you don’t have time to mess with a harness either) 3. It’ll make them feel safe, hidden, and protected while they’re terrified
Thank GOD the firefighters put it out really quickly and nothing terrible happened. All pets left inside the building were safe, including my own, and nobody got hurt.
But the lesson here is to keep your carriers easy to access incase of emergency! Whether it be a fire, your pet having a seizure, earthquake or tornado.. whatever you can think of. Nothing is worse than being in a panic, trying to find your animals, and not being able to take them because you have no way to safely transport them. There’s no way I would’ve been able to carry both cats and my rabbit without one of them wiggling out on me. So this is just a warning that you should always keep them in a place where they’re quick and easy to grab, and if you do have them in a closet or storage be mindful not to bury them! Thanks for reading
TL;DR- my apartment had a fire last night and many of us had to leave our pets inside because we couldn’t grab them and get them into carriers safely. Only a lucky few managed to bring their pets in their arms. Always keep your carriers in a place easy to grab and don’t bury them in other stuff incase of emergency! Yes all people and pets are now safe.
Hey everyone! I will soon be adopting a new kitten that is roughly 6 weeks old that was born at my aunts on the farm. I am just wondering what to expect when looking for a vet for shots, getting fixed, and declawed as far as prices and ages in which to go about these along with any other advice for caring for a young kitten (food, litter box, training, etc). Thanks!
hello r/Pets. First time posting here. Just wanted to ask about my kitten. He's about 7 weeks old now but seems underdeveloped than his siblings. He's much smaller and has a bloated tummy. His eyes also discharge some sort of mucus, though is now lessened than before. Other than that, he is quite lively, still enjoys playing with his siblings here (their mom is also our pet). Just wondering why he looks underdeveloped? Thanks guys
So my cat recently had a urinary blockage and seems to have recovered fine since his time at the vet a month ago, but he doesn't use the litter box for peeing anymore. He poops in it, but instead of peeing in it, he pees on my plants. I've tried deterrent sprays and cluttering the open dirt space but he just doesn't seem fazed by any of it. If any of you have had a similar problem, please give me some suggestions. This is becoming a serious problem trying to get my garden going.
So I'm sure this has been asked before so if this is repetitive, mods feel free to delete.
My husband and I recently adooted a 12 week old kitten. 90% of the time he is playful and sweet. 10% however accounts for when he gets overly excited and ends up scratching or chomping down on one of us. We've tried making "ouch" noises to let him know it hurts, walking away, putting him in time out. We try to use wand toys to play with him, at least 2 hours total everyday. He has plenty of toys that he also loves but for some reason still want to sit in our laps and attack our hands, legs, shirts ect.
If it was just biting it wouldn't bother me as much, as he has learned to be more gentle. But his tiny claws are so sharp. He has a scratching post but doesnt seem to want to use it at all. Besides the above the only other advice I've seen is to get another kitten which honestly is not in the stars right now.
Similarly, we have a problem in that he has ripped a hole in the bottom of the couch and now likes to climb around the springs and the inside of the backboard. We've patched the holes but he keeps making more. Should we reupholster with a thicker material?
I love this little guy but he definitely is a bit of a handful at times. Just looking for any advice on how to deal with his behavior.
My Great Pyrenees got fleas a few weeks ago while staying with family while I was out of town. He was given revolution and capstar while with them and had no fleas when I picked him up.
It’s been over a week and he’s still scratching and nibbling himself like crazy. I’ve searched his fur (which is super dense because of his breed) and have found one dead flea and some black residue from the fleas.
He has an appointment to be groomed this weekend (I don’t have the water pressure to get through his fur/can’t give good dog haircuts) and I’m hoping that’ll help some. I’ve given him liquid children’s benedryl a few times but he HATES it and gags/vomits.
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. How long did it take your dog to stop itching?
Thanks!
I recently adopted a cat from a woman who had five cats (including the girl I took) and a dog. The cat was a stray and probably feral. beforehand. The woman I got her from got her used to people somewhat, but I think she also scared her into submission. When I went to get the cat, Raleigh, she wouldn’t even come to the owner.
Now, at my apartment, it has been a little over 48 hours and she has come out of the bathroom where she was hiding, to my room under the bed for a day, to the rest of the apartment. She allows my other cat to sit with her, and is comfortable enough to sleep and eat with me, my roomate, and the other cat. However, my Chihuahua terrorizes her.
To him, he is excited and wants to play. Our other cat allowed him to approach and immediately started playing and now the two roll around in the floor and wrestle (they are the same size lol). Raleigh hisses at him and it sets my Chi off and this morning he started chasing her and bark/screaming at her. I removed him and then checked on her after. She was sitting in the window rather than hiding and she allowed me to pet her briefly.
I just need some advice moving forward so that I don’t break any trust with Raleigh and so that she can feel comfortable around both her new humans and pet friends. I am aware that this means my Chihuahua’s behavior probably needs to be addressed in this situation as well. Any advice on both accounts is welcome!
TL;DRMy new cat came from a sketchy situation and my Chihuahua terrifies her. I need help moving forward to create a comfortable and peaceful household.
So over the span of a week, our cat went from being fine, to seeming a bit clumsy, to being completely unable to walk, to barely moving at all. He's still very active mentally - if we hold him to his favorite toys he wants to play with them, and he's still awake the normal amount. He's only eleven months old - he WANTS to play. But he can't stand on his back legs, and he can't move one of them at all - it's just dead and limp. He can't even clean himself or go to the bathroom without help.
We took him to the emergency vet when we realized there was a problem...but after a glucose test, two bloodwork tests, and X-rays, they had no answers as to why this is happening. The most likely culprit is that his spinal cord is being compressed, but without an MRI and CTAP, we wouldn't know more...and that's $2,000 just to know WHAT the issue is - nevermind the consideration for treating it, and the bleakness of prognosis on an issue like this regardless. I hate the idea of - and myself for - putting a dollar value on a family member's life, but I haven't even finished college, and my fiance is still paying off her college debts ten years later; we're not exactly made of money.
The end result of this right now is that we've taken him home with some pain and anti-inflammatory medication. We've got until Saturday with him on those meds, in the hope that the issue could be a simple bruising. But if that's not the case, right now we've assumed this is the time we have to say goodbye and make sure his final few days are spent comfortably and with his family. If nothing changes, then we bring him back in Saturday.
Realistically I'm not sure why I'm making this post...maybe in the hopes that someone here has experience with this or is a vet and has a suggestion to try. Maybe it's for emotional support; I still occasionally have nightmares about holding my mom's dog for her while she cried as he went limp. Either way, I felt I needed to make it.
And apologies/feel free to delete if this violates rule 4. I elected to post it here because he's not dying (just in pain/having zero QoL), and because frankly there's more people here.
Don't get this misunderstood. I am not sexually attracted to animals but why do I always get sexually aroused when petting or carrying an animal. It happens with both male and female animals and different animals like dogs, birds and rabbits.
My boyfriend and I have just moved out of a place where we had a roommate (bfs brother) into a place of our own. We've been here a couple of days and I can already see a change in my pup. He is house trained, but has been peeing in the house. And he's sleeping allllll the time. I know there should be a transition period... He was in love with my roommate and his cat, and now he's kinda by himself besides me and boyfriend. I know I need to give him time, but is there anything I can do to make it easier on him?
Hi all I have a pretty difficult situation regarding my kitten he's almost a year old. He was rescued at 2 weeks old, and love the little guy to bits.
The main issue is that he goes where ever he feels like he even poops/urinate near his food and sleeping area, I have tried changing the litter type numerous times. Even if he's out all day he will wait until he's inside to go. Or go on the pateo instead of the soil or grass... He is nurtured. And he's very calm and quiet doesn't meow much. I did ask the pet shop and they said to use some sprays to remove emzynes and a repellant in the areas after he been, however it's not worked...
If you have any guidance I would be greatful he's my first pet.
Thank you for your advice
Have multiple dogs that like to sit and sleep on the cushions. What’s the best way to remove their smell from the leather couch?
Hi, all! Would love to hear advice/experiences with acclimating an outdoor and/or un-socialized kitten. My SO and I recently took in a 7 week male kitten who wasn’t being well cared for. The litter wasn’t being well fed or paid much attention to — thankfully most have been rehomed.
We’ve made lots of progress with him in just the past day or two. Lots of playing, belly rubs, and even some purrs!
I’m wondering how to help with his hide first instinct. He loves playing and getting pets but never approachs us (he’s been hiding then immediately coming out once we get toys out).
I also was very surprised that he wasn’t ~obsessed~ with our young female cat. She’s been watching and tried to approach a few times but leaves once she sees he’s afraid. She adores kittens and they’ve always acclimated to her demeanor quickly.
I’ve learned how to work with an adult cat who isn’t a fan of a new kitten but it’s a completely new ball game to have the new kitten be so cautious. I would love to hear feedback with this as well!
Kitten is in his own separate room with all amenities. Keeping all visits highly supervised and watching him quite consistently so we can work litter training since he’s been outdoor his whole life.
Hey guys I’m in need of some advice. My 13 year old pup won’t eat and refuses to go outside when it rains and storms. She has always been afraid of thunderstorms but it has been getting worse to the point of her not eating or going outside at all whenever it rains.
We have tried a lot of things such as a thunder shirt, relaxing music for dogs, peanut butter in her food, even treats but nothing is really working. All she does is cower in our bathroom and shake almost all day and it is one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen.
Me and my family don’t really know what else to do and are starting to get very anxious, especially since New Jersey has been plagued with bad storms this week, pretty much daily.
Has anyone else’s pet done this? Are there any good solutions for it?
Hello, my dog ate a lot of gum within the past 5 hours. The gum contained xylitol which we are aware raises their insulin. She threw up the gum within about 2 hours of her eating it. We gave her some sugary foods (which we made sure were safe) and she seems to be doing better now. Is there anything else we should know?
I get the feeling that my 1ish year old kitten wasn't weaned properly. She isnt a lap cat by day, but friendly enough. Until late at night she crawls up to me on my bed and licks, and actually kind of drools on me while I'm trying to sleep. She goes for my arms or legs in the fatty spots. I think she spits out saliva through her nose. It's cold, it's hard to wipe off, it tickles, and it's gross.
I have sleeping issues so this has been hell. It's taken everything in my power not to give her a swat, but as an alternative I've tried blowing in her face. It usually chases her off instantly. Problem is, no matter how many time I blow in her face she keeps persisting, so it's obviously not working.
I've tried shutting the door at night but they yowl and carry on. I feel like that's not fair to my first cat, either.
Anyone have any suggestions?
My guinea pig was nearly 8 years old and yesterday I found him dead in his cage when i came in to feed him. Im hoping he died of old age peacefully in his sleep (he was in his sleeping position when i found him). But the night before he was just fine, he's always acted so young and energetic I felt like it was so sudden for him to die. About a month ago we changed from a big C&C cage to a small Katey cage with wood shavings. He's been alone for the past few years since his buddy also died similarly. Im wondering if it's normal for guinea pigs to just kick it suddenly with not warning or if there's something I did wrong.
Hello all,
I have been trying to work with my very high-energy, attention-demanding kitten. She is now 7 months old.
Most of her destructive behaviors have slowly improved (she still occasionally tries to snatch food out of my hands), but she seems to have a serious problem with drinking water.
I have gotten her a water fountain thingy - she knocked it over and generally mistrusts it. I have given her fresh water at mealtimes, in heavy dishes, that she still manages to knock over. Alternatively, I have let her water sit around for a while too. I have put trays underneath her dishes - still spills water everywhere. The only water she truly seems to like is dirty dishwater from the occasional pots I leave to soak overnight.
Letting her have access to the kitchen sink is a big no-no for sanitary reasons (baby on the way, do not want her getting used to hanging out around surfaces where bottles will be drying, etc).
I am at my wits end. I live in a rental, and we're starting to get some serious water damage on the floor from her crazy habits.
Is there anything else I can try???
We had to put my dog down on Monday, and my other dog Winnie has not been able to go to the backyard to do her business for some reason. I’m not sure how I can fix this. My dog was euthanized at home by a vet but in my living room. Is it the smell of him?
To make it a short story, the last pet we had apparently had a slight flea problem along with other problems. We live in an apartment with pretty cheap-looking vinyl "wood" flooring but we have area rugs and runners.
We haven't noticed an intense infestation. The only reason we noticed was because I gave the pet a bath and I saw about 4 fleas in the soapy water and one crawling on it. After that pet was gone, we cleaned up a little and did not have much of an issue because it was only here for one day. We didn't get bit,at least we didn't notice if we did. But my friend brought their pet over recently and I guess a flea jumped on it or from somewhere because she understandably freaked out that there was a flea on her furbaby, yes it was a flea...thankfully she didn't hold it against me because all of this started with an irresponsible human.
So just in case it was from our apartment, how do we make sure the fleas are gone? I've seen about Borax? What do we do about the rugs, our clothes, the bathroom, living room, couch, beds, stuffed animals, closet, etc? The pet that had the fleas had walked pretty much all over the apartment except our bedroom, once, but that was probably enough. We're looking into a vacuum,we have a smart vacuum but I don't think that has enough power.
Yes, this is horribly embarrassing. But we somehow found ourselves in this situation. It was a crazy winter, and without thinking we were putting our dogs poo in a trash can along with snow that got in there.... now we have this smelly, disgusting can of shit. What do I do with it??!?!? Does anyone know? How can I properly dispose/empty/drain this mess without smelling up the neighborhood and safely not harming the environment. Oh my gosh I am f’ed. Please help
So unfortunately my kittens litter tray is in my bedroom and it stinks, I have to change it frequently as I don’t want my room to smell, my windows are always open to air the room out and I spray different air fresheners but I can’t mask the smell, I know an alternative is to just move the litter tray but for the next few weeks this isn’t an option! Any tips to make the smell less intense would be much appreciated!
Whenever I would vacuum my dogs would go crazy and attack the vacuum cleaner, but ever since I got a roomba the dogs couldn't care less about it, which is definitely a good thing, but I'm still curious. I'm assuming they just don't perceive it as a threat even though it's as big as all of them (two pugs and a french bulldog. My chihuahua never cared about the vacuum either).
I found a kitten, maybe 4 weeks old, by the side of the road. I seen a few ran over corpses possibly the mom and other kittens hard to tell though when it looks like hamburger meat with fur, he was alone and in the gutter so I took him home. He is definitely starving, you can feel every bone in his body so I made emergency formula since I can't buy some until 6 hours from now. I flea bathed and put flea treatment to remove the fleas, I will deworm later today. My concern is.... I can't keep him. I have two cats already and I barely have the room for them. I live near Los Angeles and was hoping I could find a no kill shelter or someone who wants him. I can't just post him on offer up or Craigslist , I'm both afraid he will be mistreated and it's against community standards. I don't want to take him to a pound and most shelters this time of year refuse kittens due to it being on then season.
If anyone knows of locations I can drop him off at I would appreciate it. I will likely keep him a week or two so he's old enough to adopt and ises a litter box and is dewormed and flea free . I want him in the best condition possible so he gets a good home quickly. Please help with any information regarding no kill shelters or rescues. If anyone lives near Montclair in California and wants a kitten please message me. I just want him to have a good home and be well loved and Reddit is known for some wholesome things. Please help me get this little fur baby a home.
We have two beautiful, kind hearted shepskies (sheperd + husky) They are 5years 3 months old. We named them Polo and Chanel. They are rescue dogs from the same litter. They have a foxy look and are big dogs.
Our family never had any pets prior to getting POLO and CHANEL. It was a steep learning curve. They have brought so much joy to our family. I will post their pictures soon.
Anyone else have a similar breed?
I love geckos, I had them when I was younger (leopard and house). I love tokays geckos but I know they can be aggressive and do bite very hard.
I’ve had a polecat-ferret for a year now and I’m thinking, a little gecko certainly can’t do as much damage? (To your skin)
I’m designing a dog house for my product design class and I was wondering what problems you face with your dog’s house/space. If your dog has an accident inside their house, how do you clean it or what can can your current one improve on in terms of general cleaning and cleaning up messes. How does your dog do in terms of climate: is it insulated? Also, what other features would you want for a dog house? Anything crazy is acceptable.
My pup is an Australian Cattle Dog, nearly three years old, and gets moderate exercise almost daily. All my friends that own dogs insist that twice a day is the "correct" way to feed a dog, an AM and PM meal, and they're shocked that I only feed her once a day. I actually transitioned her to feedings once a day, because when I would get up for work, and I'd feed her the AM meal, she'd take a bite or two, and then be done. Since doing one meal a day, she actually finishes all her food in one sitting. Is this "wrong" to do?
Her vet checkups have always been great. I've asked her vet about her weight (as she's on the smaller end of the breed scale, around 40lbs) and my vet assured me that she is a perfect weight.
P.S. I've been feeding her Acana Freshwater Fish in the warmer months and the Acana Red Meat in the cooler months.
A little backstory about me and pets. I've never really been a fan of cats and never had any pets. When I was 6 I got scratched by a cat once and since then I've avoided all pets. As I grew up I got over my fear of cats.
So for the past month, there's been this stray black cat that hangs outside my house. Whenever I leave the house it rubs itself on my leg and follows me around. And when I get home it rubs my legs and tries to get in to my house with me. My parents hates animals therefore my house is kind of a no pet zone so I never let the cat in.
Fast forward to today. I came home late from class and the cat was there in front of my door. Since I got no rush, I decide to sit down and the cat then jumps onto my lap and I start petting it gentle. And to be honest this cat is winning me over. But the next second. Virtually over nothing, this cat bit my right hand. And I freak out abit and calm down. Still seated it then bites and scratches my left hand. Now I'm freaked out so I stand back up. Then the cats starts purring and rubbing itself all over me again. In my confusing I decide to just go in my house and leave the cat.
But I can't help but wonder why I got scratched and bit out of nowhere. Was is something I may have done? Is it just how cats are in general? A while back I saw this video https://youtu.be/pFULjTnbPYc and I'm honestly a little bit scared this cat may flip on me like that.
Tldr: a stray cat was rubbing against me, when I sat down to pet it and chill, it bit and scratched me. Why?
Not gonna lie, felt like a dick typing the title out. My little dude passed a few weeks ago. He was bright, full of energy, and absolutely the most loyal and loving dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling mine.
I was going to wait on adopting another one for awhile. It in a sense feels wrong to attempt to replace him. But I got a call this morning from my stepfather. He’s moving out of state and can’t take our family dog with him. She’s an old gal, half deaf, but insanely sweet. She’s been a part of our family since I was a kid.
He asked me if I wanted to take her. At first I was hesitant. I lost my dog so soon and this old gal will probably kick the bucket in a few years. But she’s also been with our family since she was a pup. It feels wrong to rehome her so late in her life when she has been such a great dog for our family. But it also feels wrong to adopt another dog so soon.
What do you redditors think? Give it time? I’m a dick for contemplating getting another dog so soon? Hit me with it!
It’s an 1.5 hour plane ride home in two weeks. She’s brachycephalic since she’s a Persian the vet is hesitant to sedate her since it’s her first time flying but it’s not out of the question for sure. But does anyone have any tips for me that I could prepare for?
There are several vet clinics in my neighborhood and she, my cat, already has a vet at one of them. But, 1) I have reasons to get skeptical about her performance and the clinic itself isn't the best around here 2) I prefer my cat to have two different vets in two different clinics in case a second opinion is needed.
I just don't know how to manage this and which clinic(s) to choose.
** Clinic 1 (my cat's current doctor) **
Cons:
There's only one doctor.
The clinic is extremely small and the hospitalized patients stay in the exam room so if any sleep-in feline patient is aggressive and loud, my cat sees that cat right in the same room during the exam.
I am not satisfied with how she performs the physical exam on her own. Like the last time we were there she didn't look inside her mouth probably because she has seen it 3 months earlier but there was actually a wound on my cat's tongue.
There are less options for everything at the clinic like fewer dewormers, only Royal Canin products.)
Hospitalized patients stay all alone at nights. There is zero human with them.
Most importantly, earlier this year my got ill with high bilirubin level and infection and the vet suspected of FIP and even said it was the more likely option. She got treated with antibiotics and responded to the treatment very fast. Everything else I read on FIP says cats who actually have FIP do not respond this fast to the treatment and their levels are worse. So this makes me get very skeptical about her medical skills although she did treat my cat with antibiotics.
With that said, she has the longest years of experience around here. Over 11 years.
Pros: The vet at this clinic is THE only one who makes discount when treating homeless animals -- it speaks volumes about her love to animals IMO. The vet tech is incredible with animals - my cat loves him. It's the closest to my house. Because the clinic is small their attention is on a smaller number of cases.
** Clinic 2 **
Cons:
There's only one doctor.
The vet always seem to have some friends over. There is more human traffic at the clinic.
He's been working as a vet for 6 years.
I don't know what else as I don't have enough experience with them.
Pros:
** Clinic 3 ***
Cons:
I heard one poor treatment story about them (as said by another vet) and making the patient's human pay for the cost of miscommunication although it wasn't on their side
They generally charge more than the other clinics.
Pros:
There are two doctors. They are a married couple, both vets. I can get two opinions at one visit.
This is the only 7/24 open clinic. Hospitalized patients don't stay all alone. If heavens forbid there's an emergency late at night, I will have to take my cat to this place so I might as well get familiar with them?
I know this was long but I would appreciate any opinion. The way I want to go with this is like, getting her vaccinated at one clinic, but get her spayed at another. If she gets two check-ups a year, one at one clinic, the other at another. But I'm not sure how the clinics will take this and which clinic I should go to for what.
So this is the very first time either of us have owned a cat. We live in an apartment and wanted a dog, but ended up looking for a cat because we really wanted a fuzzy friend and a dog wasn’t ideal in our complex. We got Vincent whenever he was only 5 or 6 months old from a friend of my sister who couldn’t take care of him as she was in school.
We feed him in the morning and in the evening. Admittedly, my fiancé has been the one to feed him more than me recently. But I will still feed him fairly regularly in the mornings. Sometimes my fiancé will decide to just do it since he wakes up earlier than I do anyway.
Vincent doesn’t hide from me or anything, he’ll follow me and try and occasionally play with me, but he just doesn’t purr with me or cuddle with me anymore :( I don’t know if it was a kitten thing, or something else, now that he’s almost a year old. He used to want to cuddle with us right in our bed every night and would stay and cuddle with me in the mornings. He would purr with me quite often. I mean, over time I’ve been having to get on to him for a few things and I would grab him by the scruff of his neck pretty gently to show him I was upset, but I don’t know if that’s it or not.
So, what could be going on? Thank you!
Hiya, I have two small dogs, both rescues, both around 10 yrs old but got seperately.
For years my 1st dog Oli had always been super excited about his ordinary kibble (vet quality not supermarket) and always promptly reminding me it's time for dinner.
Newish (had for 1 yr) Amy has skin issues so with vet's input we've been trialling different kibbles, raw, special canned etc (conclusion is she has genetic issues as all forms of food restriction over the year hasn't helped). We always did slow transitions with small amounts introducing and never had bowel disturbances due to care of changeover speed.
The last change we made to a specific 'old dog' kibble they both just clearly didnt like. Would eat around it when it was combined, lost enthusiasm when it was all there was.
I transitioned them back onto one they used to go hyper for, but the past 2 weeks neither of them are interested in food, neither are excited when it comes out, neither ever finish their bowl in one sitting.
I tried not feeding for 1 day, mild increase in interest.
If it was one dog being disinterested I would assume health issues, but its both. Are they just fussy from being given more yummy food like raw etc?
Side notes: no fleas, no dental issues (recent vet visit and clean within past 3 months), no ticks, no change in other behaviour except winter has set in and it's cold.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read!
Hey guys I looked through the subs for disabled pets sections and the one I found had minimal traffic. I have a dog we “rescued” (I don’t like that term tbh) and he had to have his front arm amputated.
He has just come out of surgery and is currently struggling to walk with his three legs. He is super drugged up on painkillers from the surgery but he occasionally tries to get up, stumbles a bit before falling over.
When he falls he screams in pain, and so I was wondering if there is any way we can keep him in bed or away from trying to stand up.
Also if anyone has tips on helping him keep quality of life up please let me know. He’s just a baby and is already an integral part to the family. It really hurts too see him go with the surgery and be in this state but its for the better.
The arm he lost was his front-right arm. It was broken when he was surrendered to the vet at 7 months old. The thing is the owners didn’t do anything so the arm healed back in an L shape. He also was given up with a missing half of his ear.
I don’t really want to think about what his owners did to him, but I suspect he was in some form born into a dogfighting ring.
As the title states I believe I’m becoming allergic to my cats. I’ve lived with cats my entire life so it seems odd that this could randomly start happening. I’ll be okay walking around petting the cats but any time they snuggle with me for more than 10 minutes my eyes start to burn and nose gets runny. Can you form animal allergies in adulthood? Has this happened to anyone before? How can I overcome this?
I had rescued this kitty off the streets when he 2 months he was a baby so I took him in.. bringing him into my family was hard the first couple of months he was very scared & fiesty. I would tell my family he’s not use to it he is a stray cat. I had him for more then 1 year already and he has not change. He even got worse. He hisses at anyone that gets close to him, he attacks anyone ( he attack guest when they come over even if they been to my house multiple times, & he attacks my niece even if she just sitting down) he also attacks me too & hisses at me. He also poops and pees in my room after changing into many different litters & trying new things he like taking a shit anywhere. At this point i don’t know what to do. He’s a very angry cat & attacks everyone for no reason. ( one time he attacked my niece in the face were she had to go to the hospital cause he got her eye) he’s really out of control. It has gone to the point we’re i can’t get in him trouble or even touch him. Having guest over is me trying to put him in the room sadly or him attacking someone. I don’t know what to at this point I can’t have him no more I thought him growing up he will change but nope things keeps getting worse. I don’t want to throw him in the street but I also can’t keep him ? I meant CAT ***
I'm trying to figure out how big my Pomeranian puppy is going to be. Every time I've used one of those weight chart estimators the estimated weight has always come out to be a different weight. I'm excited to see that she is actually going to be on the bigger end of Poms! Anyone have a guess for how big she might be once she is an adult? :)
I think she is growing really fast! When I first got her at 2 months she was 2.25lbs. I can't believe that she is 5.8lbs already!
Hi Reddit, I'm planning on getting a custom blanket with a picture of my girlfriend's cat on it. There are plenty of websites like printyourpet and printypets however they all have pretty shitty reviews. Can anyone recommend a service that will provide a good product? Or does anyone have any experience in ordering these types of products?
A little back story, I recently was promoted at my job and had to move to accommodate it, when I moved I took my two year old cat Storm, who lived with an English mastiff and another cat that she loved, almost two months after we moved and I started my new position I was working almost 70-80 hours a week so Stormy was home alone a lot, so I decided to adopt her a friend since she loved Charlie and Lucy so much when I lived at home. I adopted a little gray cat that was what I was told was a little male who was almost a year old, he is super sweet and playful and friendly, he just doesn’t really want me to touch him much but he is sweet and playful and the guy that’s letting me play with him says he’s great with other cats, I take Wonton home and realize quickly when he lets me love on him that he is actually a she, Storm has played with other female cats so I wasn’t too worried. They hate each other at first and I assume it’s just cats getting used to one another, I had three cats when I was younger. It’s been almost 3 months and the cats still hate each other, any help with that would be amazing I’m at my wits end with them. That being said, because they hate each other Elphie has the living room of my apartment and Storm has my bedroom, my other huge issue with Elphie is she has severe separation anxiety, I can’t even go shower in the other room without her literally crying the entire time, she doesn’t sleep, eat, drink, use the litter box or move until I come back, and it’s only when I’m home and she knows it. When I leave for work she sees me get my shoes on and keys and I pet her and I leave, she’s fine. I’ve stood outside the door for 15 minutes in the past and she’s silent, it’s just when I’m home. She drives me absolutely insane because I’m sitting with my other cat now in my room with the door shut and she’s crying her head off and I don’t know what to do with them anymore, I’m considering rehoming Elphie but I really don’t want to do that because I would always worry about her. Elphie has her own litter box, food and water, cat tree, toys and scratchy boards in the other room so she can’t possibly be bored.
So my girlfriend has a cat for about 7/8 years at this point. His name is Zeko a tabby cat and is always very territorial and shy towards others besides my girlfriend. However, today he has bitten in her leg in three different areas pretty badly and this is the third time he has done this. She did nothing to set him or provoke him, we were just cleaning and then all of a sudden he attacked her and I had to swat him away and put him in the basement. After we got her some antibiotics for the bite (she’s okay btw) we did research and think he has Redirective Agression Disorder and just lashes out when he feels anxious. She says since he’s done this multiple times she doesn’t thinks it’s safe to keep him and doesn’t know if she should euthanize him or give him to a farm. I’m here just asking advice and want to know what others think is the best option.
TL;DR- Girlfriends cat attacked her leg possibly for feeling anxious and has done so multiple times. Need advice on what to do.
My girlfriend and I adopted a cat a couple of months ago. She shows no interest in playing with us, approaching us, or even being near us. She doesn’t scratch, bite, or hiss. She just seems constantly paralyzed by fear when we are around. At night we hear her playing with toys and it seems like she is doing normal cat things. However, the second we come home or enter the room, she hides in one spot and does not move for anything. She does not roam around the apartment while we are awake. Only comes out to eat some food then immediately back to hiding. We can’t lure her out with treats or play. We try to play with her and are trying to take away any low to the ground hiding spots and set up perches. We can’t get her to realize these places exist. What else should we be doing? Is there any hope? I’m starting to think she is feral and not just shy.
Sounds so stupid right? Should be easy. They are so small. I could take a dog to a pound. A cat! Even a gosh dang rabbit. But nooooooo, They don't take mice. And why do I need to get rid of the mice? Because my daughter is "special" and learned how to jimmy rig the locks on the mouse cage to open. Those things need keys yet she can open them. So today, I go in the room the mice are in and what do you know, The black mouse is gone, and theres a weird rustling sound. Follow the sound, and the grey and white one are stuffed in a plastic bag because she was "pretending they were toys. She is going to kill them. I need them gone. I am aware that if I were right in the room it wouldn't have happened. Don't fckn bash me I can't even deal because you know what, Everyone needs to bathe. I did manage to find the black one but I mean for petes sake, She is 6, I have stuff that needs to get done and I cant literally be sitting over her shoulder 24-7. I do not believe in helicopter parenting. And if you think I was gone super long, I'll have you know, I wasnt able to afford bedding, another reason I want them gone, and so they have shredded toilet paper in a tiny corner and one toy in a large cage. Wow... Such life for mice. Best present for my daughter...
How tf do I get rid of them without them dying? Or are they dying no matter what? Because atm, Nobody is responding to any post on any pet forum and instead they criticize "omg, you list miceeee have you tried the pound? We only want multi poos" I am not asking someone to take them here I am not asking for money I am literally asking How tf do I get them gone when nobody wants them I dont want them burrowing into the side of my house
I have a 2 year old antolian sheperd/ great Pyrenees mix and a couple months ago she lost most of her hair till she was almost bald in some spots. It ended up being an ovarian cyst and her fur grew back. Now present day she has started losing giant clumps of hair again. She was spade and the vets really haven't seen anything like this the first time and barely solved it so I'm wondering if you all have any ideas.
My neighbor and I both have dogs who occasionally poop on each other's lawn. We've always cleaned up after ourselves but I was wondering if any of you have gotten harassed for your dog pooping on another person's lawn (even if you cleaned up after yourself). I'm asking because sometimes we go the other direction and he poops on another neighbor's lawn and were wondering if people get mad or not. Thank you.
My cat has always been an indoor only cat. Her previous owner had her as an apartment cat, and then I took her in when her previous owner couldn't care for her anymore (my therapist at the time was the one who set up the entire thing for both of us). But two weeks ago she ran outside when I was coming home from my parents camp site, and because it was at late night I couldn't find her. It was a long 15 hours before I spotted her and got her back inside. But now she won't stop meowing and yowling to go back outside! My boyfriend gets angry at me because I refuse to consider her becoming an outdoor cat. She has food and skin allergies, and also there are coyotes and in my area. I am NOT having her become an outdoor cat.
But I am being driven up the wall MAD because she won't stop. I have tried to redirect her attention with toys and catnip, keeping a window open so she can get some fresh air, having her come into my room at night, but she won't stop. If I'm not giving her attention she will not stop meowing. I don't know what to do anymore.
My dog is an 8 year old yorkie bichon mix and has been limping on and off for awhile and cannot jump up our top stairs anymore. We never took her to the vet because she wasn’t crying or seemed in pain or anything. But today she seemed uncomfortable so I took her in.
Recently when she has been walking up the stairs everything would be fine until she got to the top landing, where there would be two steps left, she would not be able to jump up them and she would cry and scratch the stairs.
So after we saw this we made a appointment with a vet we only went to once (because our usual vet was booked) and he told us that she is fine except she has allergies, and gave her a shot. He told us he doesn’t see anything but by what we are telling him it seems she has back problems? He didn’t do anything for the back issues and kind of just gave the shot and left it at that.
So I just wanted to know if what I am describing seems like back problems or if I should maybe get a second opinion. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?
Ok so Ive had a husky sheppard mix named kita for 3 years (adopted when he was 2) and I (shockingly) never had to use a crate with him. He has never chewed anything ever and so has been trusted to live freely in the house for the entire 3 years.
Ok so I adopted a new dog from the humane society 2 days ago after multiple play dates to ensure she got along with kita. She is a 10 month old Anatolian sheppard mix name chevey. All is well overall but to ensure her safety at night and when im gone I've been trying to crate train her. The problem is Im like 98% sure she was abused before arriving at the humane society so she gets very shaky and nervous around the crate and if there is a loud noise or sudden movement she cowars. It breaks my heart but I'm trying to make the crate less scary with toys and treats and a nice bed in it.
I was hoping you fine reddit folks may have some advice for how to make it less scary to her. I always treat her for getting in and coming out. I have a nice bed inside and some of the toys shes familiar with. The crate is in my room beside my bed so she can see me at night and kita. If I leave during the day, I turn on the radia low so she can hear a voice and when I get home the first thing I do is let her out again and praise her.
Also I have a vet appoinment set up to check on her as well but the earliest I could get was june 17. Ive also contacted a vet tech\behavioural trainer but am yet waiting to receive a date.
I'll be moving across the country with two cats. Both are spayed domestic short hairs weighing 10 and 13 lbs. They both get really anxious with just a 30-minute car ride to the vet. I plan on taking an 8-hour flight. My question is, is it recommended to sedate cats for long distance travel? What would you recommend to sedate them with both OTC or Rx? (it seems like my vet always agrees to whatever medication suggestion I bring, so I would like to know what meds to discuss with him about)
Also any tips, advice, or stories would be appreciated too!
My 14 week old labradoodle cracked one of his canines, and just had it pulled today. He’s doing good, but they recommend him wearing a cone. The problem is his sister (2 year old doodle) is terrified of him with his cone on. I tried doing treats of just the cone and transitioning to it being on her brother but she’s scared as soon as it goes on him. Help! Does he really need a cone after a tooth extraction? If he does, any advice to get big sister to calm down?
I’m considering getting myself one and these are just a few questions I have. Thanks!
Ok, this is my first post and I am not sure if I posted under the right sub-reddit.
Anyway, this happened today, and I emit it is some what my fault. So, my dog is a boxer/bull or pit mix, she's only a year old and wouldn't hurt a fly (OK,she would eat a fly but you get my point). I was sitting outside in my yard (no fence), and I decided to take her of her leash, I know, I probable shouldn't have done that, because she chases squirrels, cats and birds, but I was only going to be out there for a few minutes.
So, a few thing you have to know, me and my neighbors share a drive, and they have a lot of people coming to see them, so cars are always coming and going, it makes me unconformable, but whatever.
Back to the story, I was sitting there and the dog was just under my feet. A car came down the drive, no big deal she has never chased one, but for what ever reason she ran up to this one. There where two people a guy and a girl, who was driving, she was very nice, but the guy got out and started shooing at my dog, (not very helpful it just got her more excited). Here was my dog doing her little 'I am so excited to see you hop', this guy shooing and talking ( I say talking because he was not yelling but was angry) to her, I come up and tried to grab her, she does not listen to well (I am working on that) I get the leash on her, but when I was trying to do this, the guy said if she was to do that again he would killer her, she's my first dog and I have never been talked to like that before, I was scared.
Later in the day animal control showed up and hands us a piece of paper saying people had called them because the dog has be out run wild. She has been out off her leash when people where out there with her. The paper said to confined the dog to your property, that driveway is our property, the guy doesn't even live next door, and those who do are renting from my grandfather, and there dog is running around into our yard!
I am just mad, scared, and upset. I was worried some one would try to take or hurt my dog.
I'm sure questions like this have been asked before but I keep getting so many conflicting answers about this that i'd like some insight from others. I just adopted the sweetest 2 year old shorthair last week and she has adjusted beautifully to her new home. She is extremely petite - she looks as though she could be a 6 or 7 month old kitten instead of an adult cat.
The vet who saw her at the shelter recommended 1/3 dry in the morning and 1/3 wet at night(both Hill Science Diet) - another person at the shelter suggested 1/4 dry night and day, every can and bag of cat food I see gives me a different amount and honestly it's a little overwhelming.
I want to make sure I feed her the best type of food and best amounts of food possible. I've been trying a few different canned foods with her but need to try to find one brand of wet and one brand of dry that I can consistently feed her. She hates the dry food I bought.
She is truly so tiny and I don't want to overfeed her. I grew up in a house where cats just ate as much dry kibble as they wanted and I want to try to have a bit more of a handle on when/how much she eats. Any insight on the best canned/dry foods as well as the best amounts would be super appreciated. I've gone for grain free with no meat by-product but I want to make sure I'm doing the best thing for her.
Thanks in advance!
I bought a Morkie when he was 8 weeks old. Immediately crate and house trained him. Things were great! Now he goes to the potty wherever he’s at when the urge hits him no matter how many times I take him out. When you pick him up or pet him he pees everywhere. Have taken him to the vet to make sure nothing was wrong medically. He’s fine other than being a stubborn little s@!t. Can anyone recommend how I might break him of this. He’s so tiny and really is a love bug but he refuses to listen (for lack of a better word) any suggestions would be appreciated.

So as the title says this cat keeps attacking me, unprovoked on the walk back from putting the trash out. And ONLY on the walk back from trash duties.
Usually he's super friendly and he comes to my door as soon as I open it, he runs in and i'll pet him and give him a couple treats, but randomly during the past couple of months (3 times now) he's been quite aggressivly attacking my toes and legs for no reason when I try to walk back from putting the trash out. The weird part is he still rubs himself on me during the attacking like he wants to be petted, but when I do he trys to bite me. And this is not playful either, it's more aggressive. Ive tried walking slower on the way back thinking perhaps someone chased or kicked him and that's why garbage/trash duties cause this but it makes no difference. He just attacks me when he feels like it.
If I try to ignore it he keeps on and will not let me move or walk back to my home. I walked off to the right to try and go around him and he followed and attacked me legs and toes again while meowing at me for attention. I've had to physically walk away and down the road, and come back later due to his aggressiveness which is now making me very anxious.
Talking to the owner won't help because they don't really care and he's outside 99% of the time. The only thing I can think of to resolve this is to stop petting him/giving attention/treats because I'm guessing he apparently thinks he can bully me into giving treats when he wants now? That's my plan anyway, but any advice would be great.
I usually feed mine carrots, sweet corn, apple, peas but I am wondering what else is safe for my MALE rats?
Hi all, does anyone have suggestions for a grain-free, high protein food that won't break the bank? I have two kitties, one who is old (18) and needs to maintain weight and one who is younger (11) who needs to LOSE some weight. I have moved them to a feeding schedule instead of free-feeding, but my vet has also suggested a low carb diet. Kitties don't like wet food as much as they like the dry kibble, so I'm mostly in the market for a dry kibble.
What is the most fun toy you have bought for your pet(dog/cat)?
We just found out our cat has diabetes, and our vet wants us to bring her in for an overnight stay to determine the insulin she should be on. I love my cat and would do anything for her, but we've already spent $800 just to get to this point, and now they want another $900 to determine the insulin dosage. This seems excessive to me, but I don't have any experience with feline diabetes.
I want my girl to get better and will do it if it's an absolute must but $1,700 just to get to the point where we know how to treat her seems insane. I called another vet and they said there's no reason why they can't choose a starting point, and then do a BG Curve to refine dosage from there. Does anyone have any experience with having their pet diagnosed with diabetes, or any suggestions?
Petco is offering 30% off your first order of "repeat delivery"... I'm planning to place the order with the discount and then cancel as soon as I get the item. Not trying to be mega dishonest or anything, just trying to take advantage of any savings I can find. Has anyone done this before? Will this work, or are there strings attached? Thanks for your insight!
Ok so my dog fell down the stairs (tripped over my other dog) and hurt her leg. I can’t tell if it’s broken or sprung, and if it needs a vets attention. She’s trying to walk on it, but it hurts her every time. I put her down in my living room chair and she won’t lay on the side that’s hurt. I try and put pressure on it, but she just yelps when I do. Should I just put some ice on it? Or should I bring her to a vet
Hey Guys
My girlfriend and I live in a ~500 sq ft studio apartment in NYC.
We have both been really been excited about getting a puppy and were able to adopt a 2 1/2 month beagle mix from a shelter last friday.
It was tough getting use to his schedule and energy but we had been doing well for about a week. He didn't have his shots yet so we had to be careful when handling him outside but our building included a nice little park that we would take him to play.
When we would go back to our apartment he would get really sad and cry about wanting to go outside. One of our doormen said this type of dog needs a full backyard to play in and he said he has one and would love to take him from us and give him a better life.
I feel so torn about giving up our puppy who I love very much and wanted your guys thoughts if we would make the right decision by giving him up to the guard. We have had him for a week now and need to decide on what to do.
Is it hurtful for the puppy to be in a studio apartment for his life and only being able to get out once in a while?
Any advice would be great!
Thank you!
