Do you think my kitten is miserable?

I saved a kitten in the town I'm studying at. She was 5 weeks old, without a mommy and all alone. (Side note: I have an 11 year old cat back home, which I raised all by myself, since he was 3 months old). My apartment is small. Bedroom and kitchen are one and my bathroom is small as well. My kitten was so tiny that my apartment probably seemed like a kingdom to her. We are going back home together from time to time and she gets to enjoy our big house. She runs around all day long, plays with my other cat and climbs up everywhere. When we come back to where I'm studying, at first she's looking for my mom and then cries at the door, because she thinks that if I open it she can have access to the big house. This behaviour lasts 2 days and she returns to normal. This happens every time we travel and I have a year left. Do you think she is miserable and doesn't show it? Do you think she's missing the big house? Or thinking about it? (Side note: my apartment is basically a kitty entertainment park, full of toys, things to scratch/climb/play with. Also, about her behaviour, most of the day she's sleeping on me while sucking on my clothes, otherwise she runs around like a demon chasing her tail and playing with her stuff).

New kitten refuses to come out from under sofa or nightstand

So I adopted a 7 month old kitten from my local Humane Society. They informed me that her mom was feral so she is a little shy. I dont mind shy cats, I'm just a little worried because she doesn't seem to be eating much or using her litter box and only stays under my sofa or nightstand. I was told to just leave her be but I can't help but worry about her. Should I take her to the vet possibly?

I yelled at my cat and I feel horrible.

I’ve never yelled at him before when he misbehaves. Whenever my cat does something he’s not supposed to I raise my voice a little but this time I was just so tired and in pain so I yelled. He ran and put his ears back and now he’s just sleeping. I want to hold him and talk to him in a soothing voice but I don’t want to wake him up at the moment. I just don’t want him to have a grudge against me or be scared of me now. I mean it’s the first time I yelled at him but still.... I want him to still be close to me.

Sentry/Hartz flea medicine is killing my cat.

My sister bought my cat Sentry flea medicine (the topical kind) 10 days ago, and he’s in really rough shape.

I took him to the emergency vets office and they gave him some medicine for nausea and they wanted to run tests that would be around 500/700 dollars to do. And those are just the tests. I don’t have the money to have the tests done, or the treatment he would need so I’m just trying to figure out what to do.

He’s not eating, any time he drinks any water he throws it back up, he’s losing LARGE clumps of fur and throwing those up too. he can’t hold anything down and is throwing up at least once a day, today it’s been 3 times.

Does anyone else have any experience with this flea medication and this happening to their pets? I want to call Sentry and scream at them until they agree to pay for me to take him in so he can get the help he needs. I’m so heartbroken and terrified, I’ve had my little guy since he was a newborn and needed foster care. I’m just at the end of my rope so i’m reaching out everywhere I can to get advice or help. I don’t know what else to do.

Cat rapid weight loss, runny stool, and aloof

Hello, I have a male cat (about 12 years old) who in the passed month has rapidly lost weight and has had frequent bowel movements that are fairly liquid. His condition has improved in terms of his bowels (in the past, he was puking and also having completely liquid movements), however, his weight seems to continue to drop despite feeding him more often than we used to.

When we increased his wet food (friskys) he gained weight but has since lost it. We've tried giving him food from a vet-specific "science diet" but he refused to touch it. We also were given prednisone for him, but he also refuses to take that, unless we smear some in a high-calorie gel on his fur.

He has gotten more aloof than usual, yet more lovey when he wants attention. Sometimes I cannot even adjust. I suspect this may be on the colder nights, as he has gotten down to about 7lbs. He was a small cat to begin with, being at about 9lbs to begin with.

We want to get blood samples, but he does not react well with needles, and the vet is very hesitant to put him under to get a blood sample.

I suppose my question is: How could I go about increasing his weight? Would kitten food (with its higher fat content) improve his weight gain and not disrupt his bowel movements more?

Extra information:

This is a two-cat household, the other is a female that is 13, and is doing fine. No change in behavior.

Our house is currently under construction, and there has been a lot of drywall work going on, and a lot of noise. However, this has been going on for over a year.

Bringing a Cat on Amtrack

I’m going home for Christmas vacation and have to take Amtrak back because of road closure.

I’m taking my ESA (cat) back home. (no I ESAs do not have the same protections and rights as service animals. They do not have rights outside the home, you can not mark them as service animals they will laugh in my face and turn me away, Mom)

The Amtrak website just sends you in circles.

-Yes but you need a pet reservation,

-Ok search pet reservation on the website.

-Is sent back to the original page.

(I’m just going to call for a reservation)

Amtrack: pet reservations is $25 Also Amtrack: pet reservations is $26

Amtrak: you can bring pets on all lines but one Also Amtrak: you can only bring pets on this list of lines

Amtrak: Crates must be under the seats Also Amtrak: there is no under the seats.

So has any one had any experience bringing pets on Amtrak?

Pet just passed away, have a few questions

Good Evening,

My gerbil of 4 years has passed away tonight.

The cremation centre is not open until Monday and the vet wants to charge us for storing the gerbil.

I have read online to put the gerbil in the refrigerator but I am having doubts and think the freezer would be a better option.

Has anyone had any experience with this, I do not want to damage the body for cremation.

Thank you in advance,

My dog’s licking her cone of shame

My dog (9 year old cocker spaniel) had a 5cm tumor removed from her chin on Tuesday, and she’s had a cone of shame since then. She was throwing up on Thursday because of her antibiotics but she’s alright now, but yesterday I noticed she’s been licking the inside of her collar. Right now she’s been at it for over half an hour, just licking and licking constantly, and it’s driving me insane! I’m guessing it’s just anxiety, as she’s been really antsy and uncomfortable with the cone but we can’t take it off or else she’ll scratch the wound. Any ideas as to why she’s doing this? The cone is clean, it has nothing on it, and she doesn’t have anything on her wound that might be rubbing off on it. My worry is that her saliva might go on her wound and get it dirty or infect it.

Any recommendations on how to get over my pets death

I saved my dear Phoenix on the 10th of February this year, she was an abandoned hunting pup and I instantly fell in love with her. She almost didn’t make it the first week, but being the fighter she is she made it through. It was really tough, but around 3 months ago, in august, she was fully trained, eating well and sleeping through the night finally. Then she came in heat and how bad it was, for both her and me. So we decided to get her neutered. On the 29th of November, this very Black Friday, while the vet was making sure she was fast asleep, she passed away. We don’t know if he gave her too much, if she was too weak still from her rough passed. All I know is that I have lost the best thing that happened to me, my reason to live.

Can anyone help me to get over this grieve, but more importantly, this awful guilt?

DISCLAIMER: i feel horrible for this and am in no way trying to excuse or condone my behavior. In a fit of rage i hit him multiple times. i feel the worst i’ve ever felt, i haven’t been able to sleep or eat. i love him and i hate that i hurt him. i wasn’t thinking and i wish i could tell him that i love him and care about him so much. My cat’s personality has changed

I have two cats, a male and a female. My female cat, Jeff, is a stereotypical cat; doesn’t really enjoy or seek out affection, wants to be left alone to sleep all day and the like. Male cat, Marcie, is pretty much a small dog that meows and is the polar opposite of Jeff. I also have a 1.5 year old son who loves these cats. My son pets and plays very nice with Marcie but he has had very limited experience with Jeff since she stays away from him so much. I always liked that she stayed away and I figured she knew what was best for her.

We’ve made no changes to our daily routine (for cats or babies) but in the last few days Jeff has been VERY different, mostly just affectionate with us. I’ve had both of my cats since they were old enough to come home and I’ve never ever seen her beg for attention until now. She even went up to my son and let him pet her for the first time ever, the petting only stopped when he got bored. Until a few days ago she wouldn’t really accept pets from anyone, she’d allow one or two then walk away (and hide in one of her hiding places). She’s never wanted to sleep with us but she’s spent every night cuddled up next to me since Monday.

When I looked it up a lot of sites just said sudden affection was because of a change in routine or that they need something from me but all I can think of along that line is that both cats sometimes like to go outside and enjoy our patio area. It snowed about 24 inches total this week so obviously kitties are staying inside. They haven’t gone outside much, 4-5 times total in the past few months since it’s been so cold but neither of them have seemed to mind. They don’t scratch the door or anything to try to tell me that’s what they want. Is she just sucking up so one of us will let her outside?

How long did it take for your dog and cat to get used to each other?

I just adopted a two year old cat (his name is Boy Cat lol) and my dog is absolutely terrified. The cat is pretty chill, but did run at her once and hisses when she gets remotely close- normal cat things. Boy Cat loves snuggles and pretty much follows everyone around, and my dog won’t even come near him, so she’s been pretty left out, I feel. It’s so early and I obviously don’t want to bring Boy Cat back to the shelter, but my dog is miserable. Does anyone have any advice on how long this lasts or how to help?

Advice on my injured kitten

My kitten is around 4 months old. I was playing with her , nothing unusual. Then i went to do something for like an hour, when i came back the kitten was sleeping, after she woke up i picked her up to give her something to eat and she was meowing a little bit, i put her down and i saw she is limping on her front right leg, whenever she is sitting she keeps her front right leg up , but sometimes does put weight on it. She didnt lose her apetite and doesnt hide just sleeps all the time and doesnt move much, when i touch her first joint from the paw (wrist) i can maybe feel the difference from her other wrist but then again im not a vet, she meows when i touch a small spot but doesnt moew when i move her paw .Its Saturday night and there are no vets working until monday, what should i do ? I feel bad for her

One indoor cat or two?

I’m moving into a duplex apartment soon and looking at getting an indoor cat once I’m settled. My worry is that they’d be lonely on their own all day? I work mon- fri, usually out of the house 8am to 4:30/5pm. I won’t be out too much apart from that so can give them plenty of attention when I’m about. I have plans for vertical space and the weird layout of the place allows for it naturally anyway. I’ve seen people mention making sure they can see out of a window but unfortunately my place is at the back of the building so not great views.

Would one cat be fine in their own, or would it better for them to have company? It’s a small apartment but being over two floors should give them their own space if they need it at times.

Update on dog that was hit by a car

I wanted to give an update about a dog that I posted earlier. We brought her to the vet to get x Ray's done and we found out she's a middle aged dog and has had the injury for a long time, atleast a few years. The vet had a paralyzed dog years ago so she was able too relate on the situation. She told me it's my decision. The dog is uncomfortable and will need one of the legs amputated because it's completely not functional.

Believe it or not the other back leg seems to be somewhat functional and with therapy she might be able to use it again, might. It's a big responsibility and she said she doesn't blame me if I wanted to euthanize, that it wouldn't make be a bad person. I ended up getting some flea prevention and sleep aids for her just because I know she can't get comfortable at night.

She's going to be a dog that has to wear diapers and there's a good chance she will be in a wheel chair all her life. I don't know if I'm up for the challenge because of all the animals I currently have, it will be like taking care of a baby. I want to gain ownership from the shelter and try finding a rescue that is willing to work with her, or if I do decide to take on the responsibility I have an awesome vet and many of my Facebook friends said they'd help donate to a go fund me if I needed the money.

I work in a grooming salon so after the vet I went to visit my co workers and they were the first people I told. Every single one of them wanted me to put her down, saying there's no point and her life wouldn't be fulfilled since she can't hold her bladder and walk. Also one of them kept telling me even a rescue would put her down. So I'm a little paranoid I know I want to try atleast. I just hope I can show this dog what being happy is like. I am afraid shes going to be one of those unfixable dogs that is too far gone. I can't tell if she's happy. She just flattens her ears when I go to pet her.

Advice required :Surgery or let my cat go?

Hello, long time lurker, but since I am absolutely unable to take a decision myself this time, i figured I'd ask for redditors insight and help me decide.

I am the owner of a 5+ yo cat with a very weak immune system (first pet, but if I am not mistaken, that is quite young). 2ish years ago, one of her lymph nodes got infected, no medecine could cure it, so after a scanner, my vets were confidents they could perform surgery in order to get rid of it, which they did. Unfortunately, 6 month after, the same scenario occured, and we did the same.

To keep things short, because of that recurring problem, we had to perform surgery 6 times to remove each time an infected node. Each time, it is getting worse, and my cat is now absolutely scared to go to the vet (and gets very agressive inside the clinic, which makes me believe each time we bring her there, she goes through hell).

Last week, my cat stopped feeding; an echography and scanner revealed the same problem, unsurprisingly, in her abdomen. I'm supposed to decide if I want to perform surgery again or let her go this week-end, as there is an emergency.

I have absolutely no idea. Last time, when I decided to save her, I had the feeling it was quite selfish (I do not want to lose my cat obviously), but I have no idea if my cat wants to endure that over and over again. At this rate, I feel that every 5ish month, I will have to bring her to the vet for another surgery, again.

To make things clear, money is not clouding my judgement, as I have an insurance for that which helps me alot. I am just extremely concerned by the well being of my cat. My veterinary seems conflicted on the idea, as she did not give me a clear answer this time.

So: what would you do, or if something similar occured to you, what did you do? Would you let your pet go and stop this cycle of suffering, or would you keep asking for surgery (buying 4ish month of good time before things go downhill again)?

I apologise for my english and this gloomy post, thanks in advance.

I need help choosing a pet (or two).

Sorry if this has been asked a million times but i need a good answer. So the main issue is that I live in a small apartment. I have one small bedroom and living room (around 25 square meters in total), and a really small kitchen and bathroom. I was thinking about a cat but I've heard that their litter smells terribly. A dog is also not an option since they need a lot of interaction, going on walks and so on and I can't spend a lot of time on them since I am a college student and studying and going to classes eats a lot of my time. I also like birds such as cockatiels but I don't know much about them and I'm afraid they'll make too much noise. So I guess the ideal pet would be a cuddly one who doesn't make a lot of garbage and isn't too noisy. I like animals a lot so I'm open to any suggestion even if it doesn't meet all my prefferences. I've used to own cats, dogs, rabbits and even pigeons before but was when I lived with my parents and we have a big house and yard. Thank you in advance and have a nice day

Travelling - Ferry & Long Distance

So, I'm travelling from Devonport, Tasmania, to Melbourne via ferry, and then driving from Melbourne to Perth in my car. I'm bringing along my almost 2 year old greyhound x lab with me as well as my 3-4 year old cat (don't know exact age, adopted as a stray). Both are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, monthly dewormed/flea treatment, have collars with name tags, everything. They love human contact, I'm not worried about them running off, and they get along with each other.

They both enjoy car rides, but I worry about the ferry as well as taking them on a 5-6 day car trip. My dog has separation anxiety (only when left alone without other dogs or humans). Whenever I have to leave her alone, she stays in her crate and I give her calming treats (ingredients: chamomile, taurine, ginger, winthania) which is also cat-friendly.

I plan to sleep in my car (back seats fold down) with both my dog and my cat having free roam with a kitty litter tray available just in case. Cat is very clean so I'm not worried about accidents. I won't have enough space during drives to have my dog in her crate, but she has a car harness that attaches to the seat belt in the front, so I'm not worried.

Bringing with me:

  • Leashes/harnesses for both
  • Dog food & cat food (dry)
  • Calming solutions/treats
  • Kitty litter
  • Doggy bags
  • 3 litre bottle of water for travel (Refill during stops)
  • Collapsible water bowl
  • Toys & treats for entertainment

Additionally: Cat does not like travelling in enclosed spaces. She meows and cries and hates it. She has a harness and is leash-trained and I generally have her attached securely to the seatbelt. She enjoys car rides outside carriers within the vehicle. So either;
A) Keep her inside a carrier and fill a shoe box with plastic and kitty litter, but she will meow and be distressed throughout the travel, or;
B) Keep her in her harness and leash with access to a kitty litter tray in the back during travel and just hope I don't get pulled over.

I guess my main questions are...
1) A or B?
2) What kind of sea sickness treatments can I give to both my pets?
3) What additional items should I bring with me?
4) Anything else I should be concerned about or worried about?
5) Travelling with pets tips are greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

What can I do to stop my cat from using any and all furniture as a litter tray alternative?

So yeah. I have a 4 year old, indoor female cat, who has gotten into the horrendous habit of using my bed and sofa as an alternative to the litter tray when it is not in pristine condition, and lately it’s getting horrendous. She poos and pees on both pieces of furniture, and it’s getting to the point where I don’t want to leave her alone in the apartment because I know she’s just going to do it again.

I always keep on top of the litter, I clean it out daily, or even more often sometimes if necessary. She’s just gotten into this habit of not using it if it isn’t completely clean.

How can I discourage this behaviour? Is there any kind of spray or something I can leave on my bed and sofa that would put her off? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My husband wants to give the cat we rescued.

In August, we rescued a kitten who was injured. We looked after him and he recovered and now is in a good shape. Although he agreed initially to keep it my husband changed his mind as he is clearly not accustomed to pets and does not think he wants to have one. My parents are ok with taking him in but I am having a hard time giving him up as I love pets and always wanted to have one. My husband thinks that having a cat is inconvenient and he is worried about the cat ruining the furniture and hurting us with his teeth when he changes his baby teeth. He also thinks that the cat needs a bigger space than an apartment and it is not good to leave him at home the whole day. We had several arguments due to this as I cannot just give him up like that. The only way I would even consider giving him to my parents is by knowing that he will be happier in a house with a garden and chickens.

Feeling guilty about my FIV+ feral

Hi everyone, I am new to this subreddit. I've been grappling with feelings of guilt about my FIV+ feral cat. He always wants to go outside but I've never been able to afford my own home and he won't come back when I call him. He also slips every cat leash I've tried and gotten lost for weeks at a time. Thanks to kind neighbors and family members I have been able to bring him home every time. I've even gone so far as to completely change the state I am in for him. Buying a house with a yard is not an option for many people in California so I've uprooted myself to Florida. I have immediate family here and I feel supported but it's a big change. I am just starting an amazing full time position working for Disney but the only housing I could get being a cross-country transplant was a room in a heavy chain smokers house. I had to sign a one year lease to get it and I had no other options due to having to drive cross country in 4 days. Now I feel like I have failed my cat because the smell of smoke permeates everything when the AC turns on. I don't know if it is going to cause him distress when I leave to work long hours and I have to close the window. Is it okay for him to be in this situation for one year? I will be able to buy us a mobile home in Florida at the end of this lease and will be able to provide him an outdoor enclosure once it is up and then save for a downpayment on a small home. I just don't know if he will suffer throughout this process. It would devastate me to have to give him up and I would rather be homeless pushing him around in a big cage with a shopping cart outside than let him suffer.

Can dogs have night terrors?

My dog was sleeping and breathing funny so I was looking at her to make sure she was alright. Then she started growling, opened her eyes (but wasn't looking anywhere- they were blank), then almost bit me.

She's a year and a half old; from an abusive background. She'll regularly growl in her sleep (a distance away from me so I'm not disturbing her) and breathes heavily at times. Sometimes she'll begin violently shaking in her sleep too. There's rarely whimpering, but it has happened.

She's entirely non-aggressive around people, but slightly food aggressive around dogs.

She sleeps in bed with me at night and uses the pillow beside my head. After tonight, I'm not sure if I should be taking more precaution. It was really out of character. I've had her for about six months.

Edit: She's been to the veterinarian recently and had xrays. She's in perfect health- physically.

Relatives believe dogs should always remain outside 😔

What do I do with family who just don't care about the well being of their pets? 2 senior dogs are left out in the cold with rain & wind in their small dog house. They refuse to let the dogs indoors because they just dont believe that dogs belong indoors. Those doggies have seen temps of 100 + degrees and of 38 degrees. (Thats cold for California) I stayed with them briefly & bought leashes to take them for a walk, I was saddened to know that they didn't know what a walk was or what a leash was. It was probably the only time someone took them out for a walk. They live confined to a tiny space next to the house where no one sees them unless u live in the house & can take a peek at them. Yes, family feeds them & cleans up their messes & because of me...they have blankets but what else can I do? Those doggies deserve to live out their last days with love warmth, kindness & love. They are so wonderful & loving. I wish i could take them but I have a newborn & toddler to take care of. My heart hurts for them 😔

My cat freaks out whenever my other cat goes to the bathroom

He gets weirdly upset whenever my girl cat uses the litter box. He makes noise, follows her around, sniffs the ground where she walks and sometimes licks the ground too. She doesn't like it and tends to get harassed. She usually rushes out of the litter box to try to avoid him. He will chase her and bother her for a few minutes and then go back to normal.

If hes asleep or something and doesn't notice that she went, he'll come sniffing around the litter box later and start crying.

I can't understand why he's so weird about this. And I couldn't find anyone who had a similar experience. Any ideas? Anything I can do to help her not get harassed? Or is there some reason why he would do this?

I hit my loving old dog way too hard 6 weeks before he passed. I only hit him twice in his life.

About 6 weeks ago I came home from work, tired and grumpy. I asked my dog if he wanted to go for a walk, being old and tired he didn't get up until I got a treat for him. Once he followed me outside I gave him the treat and stood and waited with him, telling him to go poo. When he didn't go I brought him back inside and went and had my shower. When I came out of the shower I smelled shit, to come downstairs to multiple piles of diarhea strewn around the house. I got mad, scolded him and hit his tired old bones with way too much force than I should have. He yelped. Right after I hit him I immediately forgave him for his accident and kissed him on the head and rubbed his ears and said "I'm sorry" before cleaning up his mess.

He couldn't control his bowels near the end, he was 15 years old. He was entirely innocent and couldn't help himself, which makes me feel the WORST. He knew what he did but I knew it wasn't worth a punishment like that, especially since I RARELY hit that dog, and I never hit him as hard as I hit him that day. He didn't deserve that, especially because he couldn't control himself. It was wrong on my part in every way, he was innocent and helpless at that age. Very well tempered, resilient and loving.

He didn't limp around or whimper after I hit him, which tells me he likely wasn't hurt too bad. That's the silver lining in all of this. That and the fact I fed him pulled pork, raw chicken wings, roast beef, a bit of cheese, cooked potatoes, a bit of bacon and some apples and bananas as treats for the last week of his life. Remember that this incident happened 6 weeks before he died. I gave him lots and lots of love and affection from that incident to the time of his death. I also gave him lots of treats.

My concern is only a day or 2 before he died he pooed on the floor and hid in the dark corner i hit him in over a month before. I gave him a quick pet and told him it was OK, but he stayed in that corner at the back of the house for hours, when he usually only stayed at the front of the house by the door. When I realized he was still sitting there hours later i called him out of his spot and gave him a treat and a quick rub behind the ears.

I felt like he still remembered that hitting incident and feared the repercussions of his bowel movements. He felt ashamed and fearful after he pooed and he shouldn't have, he was old and an overall good, well tempered dog. I didn't punish him for his poos since that incident, only scolded him. I fed him lots of treats and showed my forgiveness. I also rescued him from the garage my parents put him in every night, he would yelp and whimper for hours if I didn't.

I always took him out of the garage after my parents went to bed, and since I worked afternoon shifts I would sit and watch TV in the living room with him until 5 am for the last 2 months of his life to keep him company and make sure he doesn't leave a mess when my parents wake up at 6 am. He appreciated that, I know for sure.

My main question and concern is: DID HE FORGIVE AND FORGET? I forgave him, and I just want him to know he was the best dog I could have ever asked for. He was loving, loyal, smart, protective and gentle with his owners. He would never hurt us and the fact I hurt him so soon before his death unnerves me and makes me feel so guilty. He didn't deserve it and every time he pooed he would go hide when he should have died knowing he didn't need to feel any guilt for his involuntary bowel movements. I hope he died knowing he was loved and taken care of.

Are there any telemed or remote vet options for my pet cat?

I think my cat has an eye infection of some sort...are there any remote telemed options for pets? I’m guessing she might need a prescription eye drop so I’m not sure of the best way to get this ASAP. Unfortunately my vet is fully booked and isn’t available until later next week. :(

My Cat Can't Stand Cats

I live in an apartment by myself, just me, my 2 rats, and my cat. My cat is very sweet to every other kind of animal. My old roommate used to have a dog and they got along swell and would play together. When I let my rats out in their play pen my cat is very curious and likes to watch them but is very friendly and sweet with them. Has never showed any sign of wanting to hurt or eat them. I would honestly think she could never hurt a fly if it weren't for the fact that every time shes near another cat she is extremely territorial and almost unrecognizable. I once had to help a friend cat sit while she was out of town and we had to do separate food, water, and litter boxes. When she wouldn't stop hissing, swiping, and running away we decided to close the doors of my apartment so they were sectioned off and she continued to hiss from under the door for the entirety the other cat was there. I can feel her anxiety and its almost like shes a different cat.

Background story of my cat before i got her. I got her when she was an estimated 1 and a half years old. She originally found by my ex's mom outdoors and pregnant. His mom fed her until one day she returned with only 2 kittens. She fed them but when they started to get a older she started not to like them. When it started to get bad she got passed to his aunt, who had 2 other cats. My cat continued to be aggressive with her cats for months until I was in an apartment where I was able to have her, and then I took her in as soon as I could. In the months she spent around other cats, she couldn't get along with them.

Now shes almost 3 and just as aggressive with other cats as ever. I don't really have very many situations where shes around other cats but lately I have really felt the desire to take on another cat from a shelter or rescue. I was wondering if this is something that is perminate in my cat because its how she has always been or if there are things I can do to ease her anxiety and aggression for other cats. I know shes capable of being friendly to other creatures, shes an angel with my pet rats. Any advice would be so so helpful!

Tldr: my cat is aggressive towards other cats, and has always been this way. She used to be wild until she had kittens and got taken in. I got her a year later and she was nice to my old roommates dogs and is very nice to my rats. What can i do to help ease her into a new and I may want to adopt? Is it even possible to do if it has been like this her whole life?

Anti Icky Poo for old cat urine smell in carpet?

I have some old cat urine smells coming from the carpet, pad, and subfloor in one room of my house. I hear a lot of good things about Anti Icky Poo and the pre treatment, but it's pretty expensive. A lot cheaper than carpet though.

Has anyone had success with it for old urine smells? How did you use it and how long did it take?

Or has anyone tried and failed with it?

Kitten issue (crystals in bladder) any wisdom?

So,

Our kitten has been hitting the litter box repeatedly (became pink and a little bloody) . Brought him to the vet and he noted that there was sediment in his bladder (calcite). He gave him water and gave him meds. Our little guy has peed since trying to flush out the crystals.

We brought him to the vet again, after another bloody patch. My little guy was brought back. His urine was diluted which was good so these crystals arent togather to form a stone. He was given a steroid shot and has been sleepy. Has anyone had this issue?

My dog killed my (about) 12 week old kitten, that I just got literally 3 days ago. I'm extremely sad, and really hate my dog for it. I'm also not very connected to my dog in the first place, considering I've only had her for about a year, and she has dealt thousands of dollars worth of damage to my stuff. (phone, glasses, carpet, etc.)

What should I do?

How Can I Get My Cat To Gain Weight?

Hiya! My cat just recently turned 15. She's pretty healthy and lively still, but she's very skinny, and I'm worried about her losing even more weight as she ages.

She has severe allergies, and so far the only food we know that she can eat is Hill's Prescription Diet d/d. We're trying to move her to something else (preferably with more nutrition) as Hill's is very expensive. She can't hold down most grain-free foods, and a lot of wet food makes her sick. She doesn't have a lot of interest in food anymore and I think her appetite is getting smaller, but she goes crazy for meow mix irresistibles, which seems to be the only food she really likes. She can eat those as long as we only give her a few. She's really picky when it comes to anything else, and she doesn't like any people food.

Any ideas on what we can give her? Any cheap-ish treats we can try that might help her gain some weight?

I'd appreciate any advice or ideas!

Edit: She also really likes those squeeze-up treats, but can't eat them. We've tried grain free versions but she immediately got sick.

Any tips on leaving dogs while on vacation?

Having major anxiety about leaving my 2 dogs behind.... I will be gone for 5 days. They’re staying at my dads house, and he has 2 other dogs. I’m glad they’ll be staying there instead of a kennel. However I’m still super worried/sad about leaving them! I’ve never ever left them before. My one dog is SUPER SUPER attached to me and it’s breaking my heart knowing he’ll be freaking out without me around. My dogs are my babies so this is super hard for me!

Is it really okay when shelters allow anyone to adopt pets?

I've seen a lot of complaints on r/dogs that rescues and even shelters have really high standards for their applicants. But then there's the other side of the spectrum--shelters were you can basically walk in and get a dog that same day.

This seems unsafe to me. How do you know it's not an impulse buy? That the person is really prepared for that dog?

A shelter in my area recently had a Black Friday sale. They wanted to adopt out a lot of pets. Only around 30% of people actually got a pet due to the screenings, but it still wasn't in-depth as the norm.

On anecdotes, my parents have mentioned that they had a lot of bad experiences with shelters in the 1980s. The one that stands out is that they somehow got a Husky. What shelter nowadays would give a Husky to someone with an apartment? Neither of my parents had the ability to handle her and ended up giving her back later. Huskies require experienced owners who can deal with their exercise requirements.

It works brilliantly for the dog, however the cat uses it as her personal let's annoy mummy machine! Help! My cat is aggressive towards me after I smell like another cat

I have a 3 year old cat who is very attached to me. He has never shown any aggressive behaviour before (in fact it is usually the opposite, he will run and hide under a bed of a stranger or noise scares him). Also I should note that he has not had much interaction with other cats.

Yesterday I brought home a young cat to foster for the next month as she needs medication multiple time’s a day. I have kept her in the guest bed room and have not let the cats see each other. However, my resident cat is now acting aggressively towards me. He will cautiously sniff me before getting into offensive posture, hissing, and then attacking/scratching me. He will also sometimes let out a yowling sound that I have never heard him make before.

I would appreciate any advice on how to ease/calm my resident cat. Is this behaviour ever going to subside?

As I need to medicate my foster throughout the day, I don’t know how it will be possible to not smell like her - she is very unwell but cuddly and will only take her medications if she is snuggled up on me!

Introducing a young cat to an elderly one

Hi all,

I live with a 20 year old cat - she's extraordinarily healthy, just obviously old, slow and frail. My Grandad also has a cat, about 6 years old, who may have to move in with us in the near future, due to my Grandad's worsening health. How would I go about introducing this new cat to the home?

I know there's lots of stuff online about introducing unfamiliar cats, but I can't find anything about cats with such a huge age gap, and I'm worried about unnecessarily stressing out my old girl, or in a worst-case scenario, them getting in a fight.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Help: Dog peed on hardwood floor

Hi,

A friend brought over a dog into my new house and the dog peed on my hardwood floors.

I cleaned it up immediately by soaking it up with paper towels and then I sprayed Nature's Miracle along with Bona.

I heard dog urine can cause damage to wood floors and I'm a first time homeowner so I'd like to know if there's any damage if the dog peed on my floor? My floors are dark walnut colored so it is hard to tell if they're stained...

Ways to get cat not to attack another cat

I have 4 cats in my house and they use to get all along with each other. We took one of the cats, Bella, to the vet for a checkup about a month ago. We know their scent gets all messed up after going to the vet so we expect some growling and hissing for like a day or two. Two of the cats, Shadow and Snuggles, were fine after a day or two. Oreo, however, has not adjusted and continues to growl and sometimes attack Bella. He's done this before and we would rub a bit a vanilla on their head to change their scents. He would get use to her about after a week, but this time he hasn't adjusted. Its has become more of an issue because Bella now is too scared to go to the bathroom in the litter box and just goes anywhere now. She also wont eat and shes already underweight from a hyperactive thyroid. Any other ideas on how to get them to like each other again?

Issues with the dynamics in our household

First of all, here's a key so it's not confusing

  • Derek = Old/First Cat (moved to another home) (6-7 year old)
  • Shadow = Current Cat 1 (10-11 year old)
  • Poppy = Current Cat 2 (2-3 year old)

When me and my partner got our first rented house together, we saw this cute ginger cat on the fence. We named him Derek (even though he was a girl, long story for another day). He adopted us, he moved in, and loved living with us. After him being with us for a year, we thought he was lonely since he was constantly playful. So we adopted another cat, a small, cute, little, timid girl called Shadow. They didn't get on to begin with, Derek didn't want to be friends with her at all.

They eventually just got used to each others presence after a good 6 months and then tolerated each other, they'd sleep on the same bed or in the same room eventually and greet each other, but they'd never snuggle or play with each other.

We all lived together well for 2 years and then we ended up buying a house down the road. 6 months in, Derek stopped coming to our house and moved into the old peoples home down the road. It's fair enough, he gets all the affection from there since we work 5 days a week.

We thought after a bit that Shadow was lonely as she became more clingy and needy. So we started looking for another cat. We saw this one cat called Poppy, 2-3 years old looking for a forever home. She seemed so sweet and lovely... so we went for it thinking it would be like how Derek and Shadow were to each other.

Now... Poppy is a handful. We've had her for 3 months and she does NOT get on with Shadow. Since we got her, Shadow has been so quiet and distant with us because Poppy is VERY needy, clingy, vocal. But shes also so affectionate. She CONSTANTLY wants fuss (the type of fuss that she will meow at you until you fuss her, and once you stop fussing her, she will immediately meow at you until you do it again). This makes Shadow just run away and hide all the time.

I feel so bad because Shadow is this sweet little girl that, now that i think about it, was just coming out of her shell once Derek moved out. And we've kind of smashed the house dynamic by bringing Poppy into it.

Poppy has also had a lot of vet issues (she had a scrap with Shadow and got a cut on her ear, so then she scratched it excessively till it bled so she had the ''cone of shame" on. Then she got this weird skin issue on her back so we got some cream and stuff for it. She was so stressed with the cone and cream so she was pooing everywhere. Its been chaotic!). All of this has caused Shadow to go in her shell even more.

Is this just a phase because Poppy is still kind of new (3 months) or shes just still pretty young? Any advice that you can give us will help please.

Worried about 4 month old kitten

She’s been whining a whole lot, seemingly as if she were bored. She does it when she uses the litter box too though. She seems slightly constipated. And she lies down inside the litter box and grooms herself in it sometimes as if it were a bed.

I can’t take her to the vet unless I convince my parents as I am underage.

What can I do? Does this sound like a problem?

New Pet Advice

Looking for suggestions.

I grew up with dogs mostly (Great Dane, English Bulldog, Dalmatian, Pot-cake) and a cat here or there (short hair, charcoal grey, no clue what breed).

My wife never had pets and was mildly allergic to a long hair cat my parents bad. (Eyes teared up).

Well, here we are, two kids later (8 & 10) and they are both asking for a pet. (I probably want one more than them.)

I’m looking for advice on different cat or dog breeds to have. We live in a town house with a small brick-paved and fenced back yard, but also need to take her allergy into consideration.

Your insight would be appreciated.

Found a dog hit by a car and torn on what to do

We found a dog on the side of the road today. I asked the owners of the yard she was in and they said she was hit by a car two weeks ago and the owner is in jail. She can't use her back legs and was literally skin and bones and I've been slowly feeding her to give her some strength. We took her to an emergency vet and found out she was chipped. The vet refused to do anything since she wasnt mine and told me to get ahold of the owner. I called the microchip company and they said she belongs to the local humane society. I would have to go through an adoption process to take her but she has to go back to them. But here's the thing, the local humane society in that area is famous for euthanizing an abundance of dogs and cats and has been under investigation. So I'm terrified if I bring her back they'll euthanize. There's a vet I'm taking her to tomorrow, my vet that I prefer for my current pets. I want to see if she has a fighting chance instead of giving up. I don't know if this is illegal I'm still going to contact the humane society but if they want to just trigger happy put her down I ain't doing it. There are plenty of paralysed dogs out there with a quality life. I am torn on what to do because I don't want to break the law but at the same time I want to help this dog. We're out in the country and this stuff happens all the time. People in our area do not care about their dogs. She has food in her belly and had a nice warm bath and is receiving tummy rubs atm. Please help me decide on the right thing to do.

Coming home to my childhood dog is the most bittersweet thing in the world

I left for college 5 years ago and never moved home and we got her about 6 years prior to that. I’ve always loved my dogs and she is truly a cool dog. She will play fetch all day, every day and will “talk” to you when she’s excited or likes the music playing. And she is ALWAYS so excited when I come home and honestly it’s my favorite part of coming home. All I want is to take her home with me because I know she is getting old and this year in our game of fetch I could see that she has actually slowed down when she runs and it makes me think there’s only about 5-8 years (assuming she stays as healthy as she’s been) left and all I want to do is bring her home with me. But she is so protective of me and my boyfriends dog is also very protective of me so I know it wouldn’t work (especially because they are both over the age of 10)

I wish I could see her more than I do

I want to buy a new kitten but im afraid it will be heavy on my current cat.

At the moment i have a old cat (i dont know the age) he is a mix breed of a maine coon and Siberian cat. I have had him my whole life, i would like to get a new kitten however, a maine coon 7 day old. I am afraid my cat will not like sharing his food and space with someone new.

Any help would be appriciated.

My current cat is a male (castrated), and the kitten will also be a male.

Next pet after Bearded Dragon? (Same Terrarium?)

I had a Bearded Dragon which recently passed away after 11 years. I still have the tank set up with grounded Walnut shells and wondering what other pets might be good in the same kind of terrarium. Preferably something easy going like a Bearded Dragon but not necessary, any suggestions?

Adoption place gave us a rescue cat and didn't tell us

Hi, About five months ago my boyfriend and I adopted a kitten (a few months old at the time) from an adoption center. It was one of those pricey ones where they check your house etc before they let you adopt. The kitten we wanted didn't have any info about her and they said her foster wouldn't be in town until next week. We adopted her anyway because she was acting really sweet at the time. We come back home and after having her for a few days she immediately is very aggressive, constantly switching between being sweet and attacking us, and I have felt constantly scared of this kitten in my own home. We have kept her for so long because we thought it was just because she's an overactive kitten and she'll get over it. We play with her daily, give her good food, plenty of scratching areas and places to climb/hide/run etc. Well I scrolled far back down on the adoption places IG and found a post about her- she was a rescue cat from an abusive owner. This explains why she is always so aggressive.. I have never handled this situation before and this cat should have gone to someone who can actually take care of her!! So I'm at a loss because I don't know what to do. At this point I'm tired of it, all my furniture is ruined (we even tried claw caps), and I can't have guests over because she attacks. She'll be making bread on me one moment and then full on attacking me when I don't even move! But on the other hand I still love her. I just am upset because this cat needs special attention and I have never dealt with this before. What do I do???

How can I play with my cat without terrifying her?

Earlier this year I got a rescue cat. She was terrified of me for months but now she will sometimes lay beside me and let me pet her (she has realized that pets equal euphoric heaven lol). I have some toys scattered about my place and she loves playing with a toy that is suspended on a thin wire.

I want to play with her but everytime I pick up one of her toys she just cowers and runs into the corner. Any advice on how I can play with her without terrifying her?

High energy new Hamster help

So ive had my hamster for over a week and a half now. First ive noticed the dude gets hangry lol. He was being picky with a certain pellet from his mix he just didnt and wont eat and left in his little bowl. So i left it and didnt refill it to try and get him to eat it. He wouldnt eat it at all. And then he would start running around the cage and trying to get out. he ignored his wheel and all the things i put in there. The moment i filled his bowl up again cause its getting colder out and i feel like he just needs to eat so he can keep himself warm, anyways the moment i filled his bowl and he ate. He went back to his usualy burrowing, running on his wheel, chewing on his chew sticks. I plan to start spreading his food around his cage so he has to forge for it. And then making toys where he has to work for the food because i get the feeling the lil dude is bored. I gave him pieced of toilet paper he could use for nesting. But ive been finding him hard to tame. Like he takes food from my hand and sometimes rests his lil paws on my hand but ive never held him. He has smelt my hand and bit it not hard enough to break the skin but ill pull my finger away. I made a play pen for him and he will go into a cup if i put it in his cage and I have to cover it so he doesnt climb out while i carry him to the play pen. But when i put him in this large playpen he runs around and tries to escape it. He hasnt escaped it yet but the lil dude is strong and i end up putting him back in his cage cause im scared he will escape and the amount of energy he gets when he is ppaced in the play pen. The playpen is big enough for me to sit in there with him. Im really scared that I wont be able to form a really good bond with him and i wont be abke to tame him. I know its been a short amount of time and that i might be going to fast with him. Im just trying to get him used to me being around him. He has never been aggressive. he gets scared sometimes if i move to fast but im just wondering if i need to be patient and keep trying with him? Or if theres anything else i can do with a high energy hamster? I also want to know if the high energy part is normal. I shouldve seen it coming the way he was running around in his cage at the pet store climbing on everything he could. I just want to be able to hold him and hangout with him without worrying about him lookingnfor the first chance he can get to escape. Sorry this post is so disorganized.

Cat splashes all water out of bowl

My cat Fluff sits next to his water bowl and methodically splashes all the water out of it when he's bored. Then if we don't notice and refill it, both of our cats knock over every cup in the house looking for water.

Things we've tried:

  • Multiple water bowls - Fluff splashes the water out of all of them.
  • Water bowls inside a larger container - Fluff will splash the water into the larger container, but eventually the larger container becomes flooded.
    • If the big container has low walls, then Fluff will splash the water out onto the floor.
    • If the big container has high walls, the cats have to climb inside to drink, and Fluff's brother really hates getting his feet wet.
  • One of those "automatic refill" water bowls where there's a tank on top - Fluff really likes playing with those

I was thinking about getting a dish designed for dogs who splash everywhere while drinking, but I'm not sure how those would work or if it would help.

Does anyone have ideas that we haven't tried?

I have a feeling my bengal cat is being abused by my step-dad

So orginally the cat is my step-dads, she's about 2 years old and grew up with him.
She's very shy and hides away a lot, if you were to pat her, she'd pull away first, sniff your hand and then let you pet her. From what I've heard bengals are normally very energetic and love being with their family, but she's not like this whatsoever.

I was at my desk and from there you could see the kitchen and the door was closed but its a blurry glass door so you can roughly see whats up in there. I heard some odd noises and when I looked I saw my step-dad having a kinda tantrum or somethin, but soon realized he was with the cat and he picked her up and first hit her head, then kinda just dropped her onto the ground and kicked her too. He then quickly opened the door letting the cat out and closed it again.

Now I'm not sure if its what I really saw but I'm almost positive he was hitting her. I went to check up on her and she was hiding under the bed, when I tried to reasure her out, she just hid deeper and turned away from me.

I've seen him occasionally pick her up and kinda hit her head, but sometimes it was a little rough. My boyfriend told me that he's seen him kick her, but not in the kinda "you've been naughty" light kick. She doesnt really like to sit with any of the family, she hates being picked up and pulls away when you go to pet her head.

I've seen old clips of her as a kitten when she'd play with her toys by herself and jump around a lot, but looking at her now she's the exact opposite.

I'm really confused on what to think of this and I dont know if maybe our cat is just shy like that or my step-dad made her like that. Any opinions..?

American Airlines and Cats

Hello,

First time traveling with a cat here (a feisty, scaredy cat that will flip out when she's upset and in transit). We are purchasing a harness and an approved underseat bag and taking an american flight with one connecting flight from Maine to Oklahoma in two weeks. I have a couple questions for those who have done this before:

1 - Will TSA do a private closed room screening so my cat can not flip out as much and potentially escape?

2 - Will the cat count as the carry-on and does that mean my wife won't be able to bring another one? Or could we pay for two? She needs her 'stuff' with her because she's a woman and all.

3 - If my cat meows for 5 hours, will my wife get booted from the flight?

Sorry for the ignorance but we've never done this before, and we're going to be doing it again with our other cat next year (long story but two trips actually makes more sense in our situation)

Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

Hello everybody, I need help in what to do about my sick cat. Plz help, it's serious. (Ps sorry about bad spelling and stuff, English isn't my first language)

My 9 year old cat, that have been living outside for 5 years, just recently came home and looked very bad... sometimes he would come by our house and we would feed him and try to get him inside, but he always preferred to live outside. Anyway a couple of days ago he just all of a sudden came inside and have been sleeping and eating here, we noticed a large bald spot in his fur that have been growing larger and larger, not only that but he has a very swollen belly and is drooling a lot too. We immediately noticed that something was wrong, so we took him to the vet and was told that he has an incurable decease and that it would be best to put him down as soon as possible both because he's in pain and also because he could infect our other cat. So it's supposed to happen tomorrow morning but he really wants to go outside, we don't know if we should because of the possibility of him not coming back and laying somewhere and freezing to death... he also doesn't seem to be in that much pain since he can meow eat and walk. We don't know what to do, we just want the best for him?? Can someone give some advice?

Why are some cats cuddlier than others?

My family's old cat that died a few years ago used to love cuddling and being carried around and sleeping on people's laps. He would just purr for hours.

This new cat (2 y.o.) we adopted three months ago is not into any of that. She likes a few pets but then she's done (and very willing to let you know she's done). Are we approaching her wrong or is it just her character?

Should I rehome my cat?

Sunny (female,1.5 year old cat) adopted me around 2 months ago. She was left behind by her old owners and kept coming up to my door steps to feed her as she saw that I have other cats. I fed her for a week until I noticed a wound under her arm pit (as I later found out she must have been attacked by a dog and a part of muscle and skin was torn off by the vet) and took her in to a separate room for her to be safe and warm.

The next day I took her to the vets for the surgery and was offered to put a microchip on her with my name. I was hesitant but agreed as I already fell in love with her at that point.

Problems started when I introduced her to the rest of my house after she healed (approx. 1 month ago). I have an adult dog(my sisters), 2 adult cats and a kitten. On the first day she couldn't be near any of my pets (they were being friendly) so I did my best to keep them somewhat separated.

She also a lot of the time attacks me (or anyone in my family) when I try to pet her (maybe she was abused?). She is somewhat calmer around them as she doesn't hiss whenever another cat takes just another step but still doesn't like them. She doesn't like the dog one bit but the problem will be solved very soon as my sister is moving away.

I have no idea if she is going ever tolerate my cats or stop being aggressive. She also pees on my bed almost once per day which I suspect is because she's anxious.

As much as I love her the problems might not stop and I want my cats to feel at home too.

So should I rehome my cat?

Dog won't come inside

I'm at my brother's house for Thanksgiving and I brought my dog. My brother has it large fenced in back yard and Tor seens very happy out there. It's supposed to get below freezing tonight and I'd like to get him inside. I've tried the leash trick I've tried the treats and I'm running out of ideas. He is part husky so I'm not too concerned about him being cold but I want him to be with his mom at the new place. Any ideas?

Does it sound like I should rehome my pets?

I feel like I only give mediocre care to my pets, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Meals are often late until they start pestering me and I realize they need to eat. Grooming usually gets done when I start to find mats in their coats or crusties building up around their eyes. I know I should be doing it sooner. The litterboxes are usually scooped daily, but every couple months I get out of the habit or depressed, and don't scoop them for days.

Sometimes I'm in a bad mood and my pets get scared because I'm slamming doors/drawers/etc. One of my dogs will go into a corner or under furniture and tremble until I notice and cheer her up. Sometimes I'm depressed for days and the entire time they have nothing to do but just lie in bed with me, getting up a few times a day for them to eat and go potty.

And financially I'm just not keeping up. They're chronically getting their shots late, and only getting urgent or life-threatening medical issues treated. They haven't had needed dental work done for years. I worry that one day there will be an emergency vet bill I won't be able to afford. And then my pet will die because I selfishly wanted to keep them with me.

I feel like I love them, but sometimes I think if I really loved them I would DO BETTER. And I would work more to improve the financial situation for them. So maybe that means I don't actually care about them. Maybe that means I only want them for selfish reasons because of the happiness they bring me. They are all very sweet and adorable, and really make my days worth living.

I have some mental health issues. I actually have all the same problems with my own self-care. Not showering or eating enough, ignoring medical problems. I take better care of them than me. I just suck at meeting basic needs all around. I am in therapy and have been for years now. I'm in my thirties. I think this is as good as I'll ever do for myself and my pets. This isn't up to my standards of what I think animals deserve, so I think I shouldn't get pets again in the future.

Anyway, those are the problem areas. Aside from the above, they seem to enjoy their days. Lots of snuggle time, positive training only, premium foods, lots of toys and games, and rarely being left home alone. They're all potty trained, friendly, and playful. The dogs are 8 and have been with me since puppies, and the cats are 12 and have been with me for 10 years.

How do I know what's "good enough" for them? I know there's a better home for them out there. They're very lovable and well-behaved and many people would feel lucky to have them, and give them the treatment they deserve. I've been wondering about this for years.
