Why is my cat "sighing"?

Sometimes she just blows air out of her nose like when someone would huff when he's frustrated.

For example i shoved her away from her brothers food bowl but she ran back to it every time and when i shoved her away again she just stood there and "sighed"

Earlier today she jumped down from the sink and let out a sigh.

So why is she doing this?

Is this all normal for my puppy after she got spayed?

I got my 10 m/o Olde English Sheepdog spayed yesterday. I picked her up this morning and when I brought her home she was obviously miserable with her cone of shame (e collar). She would take a few steps then sit and would only walk if I called her. She also gained aggression towards my two smaller male dogs who are both fixed. I know that’s normal. However, I’ve had so many dogs in my lifetime, males and females ALL neutered & spayed, but I’ve never had one act like her. I got home from school and her e collar was off. I freaked out and checked her stitches, they were okay so I figured it’s whatever and I’ll put the E Collar back on if she shows any sign of trying to touch it. She was a little clingy so I let her follow me around the house, I curiously sat on the floor to see if she wanted love and she circled around me multiple times & then tried to position herself into my lap (she’s too big but I know she was trying to not hurt her wound by getting comfortable around it). Anyways, so she started to attack herself IN my lap, like I had to physically force her head back as I made my brother rush for the e collar, she snapped at my arm and quickly released before even really grabbing onto my arm (she’s never snapped at me ever). She took a nap and I was hoping she’d act a little more normal when she woke up. She had a puppy dream, scared herself, & peed where she laid. Now she’s being even worse than before. She keeps having random fits of getting scared by seemingly nothing and she’ll start jumping and running as if she’s a bronco but she’ll hit things with her E collar and scare herself more. She also has started to snap at my other dogs for even making a sound. I have a video of her from earlier where she heard my other dog scratch at the door and she turned around and tried to bite both of them (she wasn’t even looking at them). Now usually she isn’t allowed on my bed because she tends to get very dirty, but it seems to be the only way to calm her down right now although she does still keep waking up randomly and immediately getting up & running/bucking. Is all of this normal??

Cat has been acting very strange after catching a mouse last week. Looking for insight/advice.

I currently am renting out my parents basement “apartment”, that is literally just a bedroom in the basement at their house. My side of the basement is completely finished, and has a small kitchen area, full bathroom, etc. The other side of the basement is like a lot of basements; concrete floors, storage area, laundry room, etc.

Recently, our cat has started acting very strange. He usually only comes down stairs to poop in his litter box and then quickly run back upstairs to his favorite sleeping spot, or hang out with me for a bit. However, last week he apparently found a mouse somewhere in the house, and brought it to my parents in the middle of the night.

EVER since then, he has been spending extremely large/odd amounts of time in the basement, just staring at random places at the ceiling, especially at ONE specific area of this crawl-space/storage area in the other half of the basement. He’s actually doing this as I’m typing this out, and it’s kinda freaking me out. I have scoured the basement and haven’t been able to find traces of any other rodent activity, but there is a fair amount of space down here for them to sneak around in. I’m mostly just concerned that there might be something wrong with him, or that he’s just lost it mentally. Personally, I think when he caught that mouse, he basically got a “taste for blood”, or something like that, and now he’s just searching in for another one in the area he originally found the first one. Another odd thing is that he mostly just does this at night, after my parents have gone to bed, otherwise he just spends all morning/day upstairs sleeping/eating/doing cat things.

Just confused by the whole situation, and also want to make sure he’s ok. Thanks in advance.

First-Time Foster Mom: Any tips/advice?

Hello, all!

So I made the decision to foster four 8 week old kittens. I’ll be picking them up tomorrow and I’m extremely excited for the experience! I have a spare room set up for them already, and am set to keep them for 3-5 weeks, or until they all reach 3 lbs.

I’m just wondering if anyone has an experience with fostering, and if there is any advice or tips that you could share with me?

Thanks!

Cat throwing up

How much cat throw up is normal? My cat threw up three times after eating last night, once after breakfast, and then once this afternoon. The food didn’t look digested or even half chewed so I think he just inhaled it too quick and ate too much like he’s done before. I haven’t found a puzzle style feeder that I think he would like yet.

Steps to reduce or eliminate cat vomiting?

My cat keeps throwing up food about once or twice a week for at least a year now. I've taken her to the vet of course but nothing seems to be physically wrong. All the blood tests and an ultrasound came back normal. All they do is give her a quarterly shot of a medicine that reduces stomach inflammation.

I've tried different foods they've suggested and that hasn't worked either. She will even throw up novel protein and hydrolyzed protein foods. I've tried both wet canned food and dry foods - she likes the wet food more but throws that up more than the dry food.

I'm thinking the next step is both portion control and making the process of eating slower by using a slow/puzzle feeder bowl.

She maintains her weight and always eats, drinks water, and uses the litter box without anything obviously being wrong.

My cat is a rescue from the shelter and has a ton of anxiety issues. She is only affectionate with me when I am at the same level as her (sitting on the couch, lying down). If I am walking around she runs away from me. She doesn't want to be picked up or go onto my lap ever. I tried the feliway plug-in diffuser but I didn't notice any change in behavior after 30 days.

Am I missing anything else?

Worried about leaving my 2 cats while I’m away on a business trip

Hello,

I have 2 female cats (1 and 2 years old). I adopted them from a rescue in February.

I have a business trip coming up next week where I will need to be gone approximately 5-6 days. I am worried because I have never been away from them that long before and am worried about how they will react.

I was once gone for 2 days and had my father come stay at the house. He said they hid the entire time he was there.

I was considering having a friend stop by once a day to fill the food bowls and give them clean water and scoop the boxes. My only concern with this is that I normally feed them twice a day. Neither of them are over eaters, but do you think that being fed more once a day will be problematic? I was hoping to spare them the stress of having a stranger there constantly because they are both skittish, but I want to make sure they will still be ok. I don’t think I know anyone who would be available to come by more than once a day.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My roommates cat bites, how do I prevent this in my kitten?

If you pet my roommates cat for more than 3 seconds it will bite or claw you every time. I hate this behavior. We are nothing but nice to this cat but this behavior makes me think this cat was abused early in life.

I’m worried that if I get a kitten it will learn this behavior. Is this a behavior that can be learned? If I get a kitten do I keep it away from the older cat? Or should I simply be always gentle and kind with my kitten and hope she never learns this?

Cat has occassional ear problems - What could it be?

My cat (calico female 5-6 years old) has been having problems the last 3-4 months with her right ear. She's both an inside outside cat and each month I give her a flea treatment on the neck.

However, it's not a constant issue, because for a couple days it will be lopsided, she'll scratch it a lot, and she'll shake her head. Then it will be fine again with no problems for the next 1-3 weeks or so without showing any of those prior signs I mentioned. This keeps repeating. Even though it repeats 1-2 times a month, it doesn't seem to be caused by the flea treatments.

I've looked in her ear with a light and see no signs of ear mites, nor any red inflamed areas that indicated any sort of infection. No visible scratches, pus or sores either.

This only lasts for a couple days before the symptoms disappear for a while so anytime im about to get a vet appointment it stops and I'm afraid it would just be a wasted visit if the vet doesn't find anything. I don't have money lying around so I need to actually know what I'm looking for so that I can actually tell the vet and they're able to find it without any trouble. Or at least treat it myself if I'm able to.

I've been trying to search the internet on what it could be but mostly see things about ear mites and infections, which again I don't see any signs of (and I'm pretty sure would be more constant).

Any ideas on what it could be?

[Question] Any tips or advice for desktop placement with two energetic bengal cats on the loose?

Before I got my cats, I always had my desktop computer on the top of my desk (because.. desk..top. jks because of airflow i did not want to let it sit on my carpeted floor).

However, I'm not sure if it's the warm air or the height or the simple "screw you i will go wherever I want" mentality of cats or the combination of all three, I cannot stop my cats from climbing my computer. I don't want to use one of those desktop drawer thingys because again, airflow. I run a lot of heavy programs for work so I need the desktop to have its airflow unhindered.

Is there any furniture like metal frame or something that I can add to my desk, or something at all so that I maintain the airflow but cats cannot climb on top? I really need to minimize the fur from going into my computer, as much as I understand that it will be inevitable.

Thank you.. and apologies if this is the wrong subreddit to ask this.

Need help! Have a pregnant cat and just lost my job

As the title says, I just lost my job. About a year ago I adopted my daughter. About 3 months ago the same people I adopted my girl from said they needed help with the mom of my cat and her last kitten from the second litter to be holed. I thought, cool I have a whole blood line of cats. Well I didn’t know the mom was not spayed so she looks like she’s pregnant. I just lost my job and can’t afford to handle 3 cats and a litter. And I don’t want to abandon the mom cat because of this. What should l I do?

Also, sorry for the grammatical errors. I’m typing fast and I’m dyslexic.

Am I fully liable?

So my roommate and I moved into an apartment about 4 months ago that allows pets. My roommate did not tell me she had a cat until about 10 minutes AFTER we signed the lease. She said she didnt want to pay the pet fee or additional rent. I accepted the cat anyway and told her that she is fully responsible for this animal, despite me being allergic to cats. I also said that if it comes down to it, she is responsible for the $300 pet fee and addition to rent since this is not my animal.

I've noticed the past two months that shes not caring for this animal. I have a separate bathroom which has a door that cannot close completely, making it easy for the cat to get in. My roommate locks her cat out of her room at night, which isn't good because the litterbox is in her room. So the cat has been going to the bathroom on my bathroom floor 2-3 times a week. My roommate only saw it as an issue when the cat pooped in her closet. I hadn't realized that my roommate hadn't cleaned the litterbox since we've moved in, because it stays in her room.

In response to this issue, my roommate advised that I keep my doors shut at all times. When I leave the house but also when I'm home - her reasoning was so that the cat knew it wasnt okay to go in there. So I'm basically living shut off and with my doors closed at all times.

So the other night, I had left between 8-9pm to go to a friends house and didnt come back until about 8am the next morning. I looked around the room and shut the door before leaving. Comes to find out the next morning, 12hrs later, her cat was hidden and I did not notice she was in my room before shutting the door. Her cat destroyed the carpet near my door, and the leasing office quoted $400-500 to get it replaced after we move out in 8 months.

I was upset, as anyone else would have been, but came up with compromise. When I confronted her she was immediately rude and defensive. She also assumed that I'd right away want to give the cat away, and spoke to me like I was the one to suggest it or force it.

Despite not being around enough, I told her she could keep the cat, however she needed to tell the office about the animal to avoid problems later on or when we move out or try leasing again. Since I accidentally locked the cat in, I offered to cover $100 of the $300 fee, $10 of the $35 in additional monthly rent, and 1/3rd of the price to fix the carpet. I felt that 12 hrs was a long time to not hear the cat scratch and yell on the other side of the door - her cat usually complains after 5-10mins when locked in somewhere, which is how we notice shes stuck sometimes. I also put forth my own money to try training the cat not to go down my hallway (static mat, water spritzer, etc) and an extra method to prevent this cat from ruining my things when I want to keep my door open.

Is my offer reasonable? What would you have done in my situation? Is there anything else that I could offer?

My cat just ran away. What do I do?

My cat loves to go out into the garage and she’ll hide and stay out there until she gets hungry in maybe 30 minutes. She got out there tonight and when my mother came home and opened the garage door, my cat immediately bolted outside and we have absolutely no clue where she went. Spent the last hour and a half biking around my neighborhood trying to find her with no luck. She’s never gone outside and ran before as she seems terrified of anything outside of the house, especially when it’s this dark out. She’s 4 years old and we got her from a humane society so she is chipped but Im still very worried as our last cat got hit the last time this happened and she was the replacement cat. Possible signs of cat uti?

I have a one year old cat which I adopted almost 3 months ago. Recently, I've noticed she's been peeing outside her litterbox when she would pee in it before but she is still pooping in it. So today I wanted to see if she even would use the litterbox to pee so I put her in front of the litterbox and she went in and peed. I did this twice at different times and she peed both times. Also, before I did this I saw her pee on the carpet and there was no straining to pee from what I can tell. She just seemed to go to the spot and think of it as a good place to pee. All the times shes peed outside the litterbox, it has been in various spots in the house all on carpet. Shes not lethargic and she still eats and drinks. I have another cat as well who is a year older and they both share the same litterbox but have shown no signs of hating to share the same litterbox. Could it be possible she has a UTI or can it be she doesnt know any better?

Dog is obsessed with licking cat

I have a one-year-old Australian shepherd and we recently adopted a kitten, So far, our dog is obsessed with the cat. The dog will not stop licking the cat all over, sometimes like nips at the kitten or pushes it with its paws. I feel really stressed about it because I don't want anything to happen to the cat even accidentally by the dog. Is it okay? Is there anything I can do to stop this or do you believe they will not work well together. The cat sometimes hisses/paws at the dog but not all the time. Is the dog hurting the kitten? I was thinking since he is an Australian maybe he is trying to herd the kitten but I'm not sure. Thank you

I hate "my" dog

My family recently got another dog because my sister and dad wanted one. We now have 2 dogs and 2 cats.

I am leaving for college in a few months. I didnt want to get attached to this dog so that it wont be hard to say goodbye. I'm already attached to the other 3 pets cuz we've had them for so long.

I never say goodbye to him when I leave the house but I do to the other pets. I dont walk unless I'm the only one home him cuz hes not my dog. I dont let him out of the cage when I'm the only one on the floor with him cuz I dont want to have to stop what I'm doing to follow him where ever he goes to make sure hes not doing something. He is not my responsibility.

Now this dog, like all others, is a good boy. Hes also pretty smart (learnt tons of tricks really quick). Ths only real reason I should have to dislike him is that hes energetic and because of that hes broke one of my things (punctured 2 holes in a dnd board as he ran across it).

I dont hate him cuz of that tho, I'm just pissed about it. However, over time, I've just started liking him less and less. I dont have an actual reason for hating him, I just do.

I just had a conversation with my parents where they said that I am mean to the dog and that its rude of me to hate him etc.

Also, side thing that I hate about this, my parents and sister get pissed whenever I call him "your dog" or "(sister)s dog". They always get mad and say that hes a family dog and that hes part of the family. However I dont consider him family and hes not my dog. I didnt care if we got him and I'd be glad If we got rid of him.

Am I wrong for hating this dog?

Cat has anal sac leakage - thicker, whiter/yellow-ish consistency?? What do I do?

The vet is obviously closed, he's been behaving normal... eating, running, cuddling, the whole nine yards.

There was no indication of anything else until we noticed a smell today, and I went to go towel down his legs and noticed the liquid coming out.

He didn't complain, or throw a fit when I gently wiped it down so I don't know if it hurts really (he's a drama queen), and he isn't red or anything in that area

Is there anything I can do to help him in the meantime? I'm going to give him a warm bath, he's a Persian so he's got long hair and the smell is a bit much

Will my cat continue to be very social?

I have a wonderful gray tabby that as far as I can compare to other cats is extremely social. He doesn’t get frightened by other people in fact he actively goes up to them for pets and generally loves attention although like all cats he does have his moments where he prefers to be alone which is completely understandable.

He will be one in July and I’ve just been wondering if his personality will stay or as time goes on and he ages will he then become much less sociable or will it mellow out and he’ll become a bit more calm? I completely understand if it does obviously he’s a cat and they aren’t as sociable as dogs for the most part but I’m just curious to see.

What are some extremely affectionate pets?

I have been looking into many animals as pets over the past 6 years, but now have the potential opportunity to finally get one. However, my mother is allergic to cats and dogs and has the misconception that they are harder to keep than every other animal. I am not going to argue with her or try to prove her wrong. However, I'm looking for an extremely affectionate animal I can interact with. I have clinical depression, OCD, and ADHD, and I get lonely a lot, and love animals. I have been looking into ferrets (I know they're extremely hard to keep, especially because they're illegal in many places) and some other animals. Right now, the top prospect for me is a pet chicken. Anybody have any other suggestions?

My fiancée and I are getting a puppy in 3 weeks. We are moving in to an apartment. The puppy will be litter trained already when we get her. We are curious about the pros and cons of each, and which type of potty training has worked best for those living in apartments.

Before anyone asks, we live next door to a dog park and also have a walking trail behind our apartment building. We both are active so the dog will get plenty of exercise.

Moved the litter box... now cat won’t stop peeing on laundry

Hi there!

I have two Maine coons. We previously had the litter box in a closet. I decided to reconfigure the situation to reclaim the closet and better contain smell. So, I acquired a really nice, covered litter box which does a great job of containing odor.

I first closed the closet door and kept the box right outside. I moved it halfway into the next room, then a bit further to it’s current location, over about a week.

One cat is doing fine. The other has begun seeking out clothing to pee on. He was doing okay until the box was moved pretty far from the closet, so I think he was confused about it being moved at first. However, he now clearly understands where the litter box is, because he uses it to poop! He also likes hanging out on top of the box cover. But he won’t use it to pee.

I clean the box daily, the type of litter hasn’t changed, and he has never had any bad litter behaviors in the past.

Nothing else has really changed since I got the new box, and he recently saw a vet, so I think it’s unlikely that there is coincidentally a health issue causing it.

Any tips on how to acclimate him to the new location, or explanations for why he would use the box for #2 but not #1? Thanks for any help :)

Anyone with experience using CBD oil for dog epilepsy?

My dog has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and has about 3-4 seizures each month. Before starting him on medications, I am wondering if anyone has had any success with CBD oil? I have read that it can be very helpful in dogs with epilepsy. Any feedback would be very helpful.

Cat still scratching after applying flea meds?

So I’ve been in a constant battle with fleas for almost 3 weeks now. I’ve been vacuuming almost every day, tried flea foggers, sprays, carpet insecticide, and even just sprinkling salt on the wood floors & carpet. These damn fleas however are still on my cat!

3 weeks ago I applied Advantage but had to wash it off (as advised by the vet) because she was having weird side effects to it. I was not able to apply any other type of medicine until Saturday. Just 2 baths a week with dawn soap. Finally was given the green light to apply Revolution. Applied about 48 hours ago, and I’m still seeing my cat bite and scratch at her skin, as well as seeing fleas falling off her (still alive but slow). Does this mean the medicines working??

I don’t know what else to do to stop this madness. I just want all of them to die!! She’s an indoor cat & im not even sure how she got them in the first place.

What else can I possibly do at this point now that she has been treated? Should I still be giving her baths ?

Indoor cats to outdoor cats

Hi all,

I have two cats, from the same litter and they've been solely living in flats as indoor pets their whole life. They go along very well, as they've always been together.
I will be moving in a few months to a house, where they would be mostly outdoor cats. There is basically no car traffic in the area, the speed limit is 30kmh, but the roads around are dirt roads, so cars can't even drive that fast. There is a forest next to the house, with boars, deer, and various other animals that come sometimes close to the house. No bears or wolfs though.
Two other cats are living at the house as outdoor cats already.
I have the possibility to leave my cats at my current flat with the next tenant, but I would absolutely prefer to take them with me. I would keep them in the house for 2-4 weeks, and would then slowly let them out.
Is this feasible IRL? Do you have any suggestions, experience? What would be best for them?

Removing scent of urine cleaner out of mattress

Hi all. My cat peed on my mattress for the first time a few weeks ago; it was my fault for closing her into my room while I was sleeping. I used both an enzyme cleaner and an Arm & Hammer foam cleaner the same day, but it seemed like they more or less mixed smells with the urine. I waited a few days and picked up more of the Nature's Miracle cleaner, then applied a generous amount on the spots last night. It took almost all of the urine smell out but added a LOT of gross fragrance, so now my bed more or less smells like a urinal cake.

Does anyone have product recommendations to get the cleaner smell out of my mattress? I'm moving across the country this summer and was planning on waiting until I moved to get a new mattress shipped to my new apartment because I don't want to have to get a Uhaul to bring it with me (plus I'm trying to save as much money as possible before my trip). It's a nice mattress with a pillowtop, so I can't flip it over. The accident was on one side of the bed so the cleaner smell is confined to that side (of course it was the side I sleep on), but I can still smell it when I wake up. It's making me nauseous and I can't live with it until July/August.

I'm moving and I can't take my dog. I'm just sad. Advice?

After graduating from college two and a half years ago, I moved back home to take care of my mom (cancer). We have two dogs. One of them over the past three years has become my absolute best friend in the whole world. She follows me around the house constantly, we play lots every day, she sleeps with me, and we're just very close. But now I'm moving to NYC and I just really don't think I can take her with me.

The cost of living for a dog is very high, not to mention there's very little living space for a dog, no grass, etc. At least here, (Florida) my dog has her brother (our other dog), my mom who loves her very much, and a substantial backyard with a pool that she loves to swim in. The only problem is that I won't be here and it really makes me feel awful. Like I'm abandoning her. I know the rational adult advice would be, "she's a dog. You can't base your life decisions off of a dog." But she's so much more than that to me. I worry every day about leaving her, how she'll adapt without me, if she'll think about me, If she'll be ok.

Have any of you experienced similar situations? If so, how did you handle them. If not, I'd still love to hear your thoughts. I know I probably sound like a crazy person to the typical adult, but I can't help it. I love this dog. She's my best friend in the whole world.

How do you feel about choosing pets based on looks?

I'm not a big pet fan, but I do love cats. If I were to get one, it would be a black Norwegian Forest like the one from my childhood. Since I wear black all the time, this would be perfect. Is it wrong to adopt a pet because of the colour of their hair?

Should I get a companion for my dying Cat?

In the past several weeks our cat has developed facial cancer. She is coughing blood and wheezes and a few days ago went blind. I don't know how much time she has. At the moment, we are keeping her safe and near food and water. We truly feel for her and want to make her last few weeks or months enjoyable, a task that is now more difficult with her being blind because she can't go outside and visit the neighbor cats and such. Our home schedule is tremendously busy with work and school so the cat is alone during the day and at night she is confined to a small area she feels comfortable with which further reduces her interactions with us. I was thinking of getting her a companion like a guinea pig or something so she is not all alone so much now that she is less mobile. I'm just not sure if this is a good idea or something to avoid. The reason for a guinea pig (or something small like that) is because we could confine it to the same areas as the cat. Currently our cat stays in a small room blocked by a fence and because she is blind she won't take the chance of jumping it. And before anyone comments about the cruelty of this, we decided to do this after we found her lost and confused. The blindness is new to her and she had wandered outside through the cat flap and couldn't find her way back. So, we setup her food, water, and litter box inside in an area she is comfortable with. She is getting weaker and is declawed so I don't think she would kill a small companion; we had sugar gliders at one time and she was amused with them. Anyway, I was just curious if anyone has done something similar and what their experiences were.

Black cat has dandruff - Won't eat Omega oils. Now what?

I have 2 black cats. One has dandruff. The vet told me to give him Omega 3 oils, I've tried several kinds in his food and he won't eat it. I've also switched his food a few times with zero change.

He doesn't itch or anything, it's just unsightly.

Brushing seems to make it worse.

He drinks plenty and gets a lot of wet food. I'm not sure why he has so much dandruff. What else can be done?

Is it normal for a kittens appetite to change as it grows up?

Me and my girlfriends kitten (~7 months old) has started eating less. I used to spread his food out during the day and at the next feeding time it would usually be all gone or at least mostly gone. I recently started feeding him a mix of wet and dry food (as I heard both had advantages, wet helps keep him hydrated, dry is good for keeping his teeth clean and healthy) and up until that point he was strictly dry food (maintaining brand and flavour that he was fed at the shelter). Hes not exhibiting lethargy or anything else else that would scream definite problem and result in a run down to the vet.

My assumption is that he just likes the wet food better and is... I guess protesting the dry food thinking I'll give him more of the wet food if he doesn't eat it. Does that sound reasonable? Is there something I can do to make the dry food more appealing to him?

My boyfriends mum (54) doesn’t look after her animals properly and it’s effecting me badly.

She has 5 cats, 3 dogs and a chicken - today my boyfriend had to beg for her to take the chicken to the vet because she looked so unwell. Found out that her feathers haven’t grown in properly and flies have laid eggs there so she is being eaten away by maggots. The old dog is constantly itching her ears and they are red and sore - I also think she has a water infection because she’s always licking herself and leaking on the floor. What can I say or do in this situation? It makes me feel sick but I can’t afford to help!

I hate and love my dog at this same time.

My dog and I have a complicated relationship, I love him I do, he's sweet, he loves cuddling on the couch with me and he's gorgeous and oh so smart. But most of the time I find myself wishing he wasn't here. Life would be much simpler for me if we never got him.

He doesn't like other dogs, he's reactive to strangers, cars, anything that moves. I can't walk him I can't take him to the park. I can't even leave him outside alone because he's super smart and will find a way to escape. This has been my life for the last 4 years. I'm at my wits end with him. But everytime I snap and think that's it, he's gotta go, he does something sweet. He'll lick my face, steal my shirts to cuddle with. He loves me I'm his world. I can't get rid of him no matter what he does.

So many people would've already sent him to the shelter, but it's not fair to him. He didn't ask to live with me. At this point I think I'm going to do what I always said I wouldn't. I'm going to put him on medication, I hate that I have to, but I see no other way to make this work. He's anxious about everything I can't imagine what his world looks like.

Am I bad person for drugging my dog? I don't know. I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest... maybe justify myself. I love my dog, but I hate him too.

Not sure how to choose the right vet

I’m going to start this off by saying I moved around the time my cat was due for a second rabies vaccination and a wellness check but I completely forgot until now. She’s almost a year overdue for the vaccine and I feel terrible, embarrassed and irresponsible. I adopted another cat recently and he needs vaccinations as well. I’d also like to get him checked for urinary issues. He’s starting to show symptoms and I don’t want them to get bad. Also, my first cat started getting a patch of dry skin on her eyebrow and it’s red and looks irritated. Many of the vets here have good reviews, but the bad reviews have to do with UTI treatment and other specific things other than shots and wellness checks. Do I just choose one and wing it? They all seem comparable but I have no idea about pricing.

A while back on an account I have since deleted, someone asked about training their dog and I recommended Richard Wolters. A lot of people went off on me for recommending his training methods even though they work very well.

Every dog I have ever had has been trained with the methods he wrote about in his books. Many of the people I know with their own dogs also train their dogs using the methods he wrote about. I would have to guess that the people who did the internet equivalent of yelling at me for recommending Richard Wolters really don't know much about his training methods and if they want to know about it, all they need to do is go to a library and/or buy a book from a store or online and read. The people who have used the methods in his books have had some of the best trained dogs and best behaved dogs I have ever come across and many other people have come across. People can get as mad as they want about Richard Wolters and keep their dogs which may not be quite as well trained as they would be if you used at least a few of Richard Wolters methods to train them. That is completely your choice and your own issue. I will keep my dogs who have been trained with those methods who know voice and whistle commands as well as hand signals, won't move a muscle without command to move or that it is okay to move out of their own will, will retrieve what I send them out to retrieve pretty much regardless of distance as long as I don't call them back before they get there due to not wanting them to get too far out to hear the whistle commands, don't jump on anyone ever, will listen to my command regardless of if I set food out for them or have some other distraction going on somewhere around them, and so on.

Since I among many other people know how well his training methods work, I don't feel a need to argue with anyone about it and won't respond to anyone who may once again do the internet equivalent of yelling. I would just hope that if you are one of those people who would do that that you go and read a bit of Richard Wolters books to actually gain knowledge on what he says to do, go meet some people and their dogs who use his methods to train which can show you how well it works, and/or perhaps use a bit of the training yourself to see how well it can work. If you are one of those people who may want to pretty much yell and/or fight about it like some people did in the past and don't want to at all look into it, I would recommend just moving on and not waste your time, my time, or anyone else's time who would have used the methods if you hadn't acted like that and tried to make it look like a very bad thing when it is not at all a bad way to train dogs.

10 month puppy urinating excessively

We got a 9 month puppy 2 months ago, and he was thankfully mostly potty trained. We had no difficulties with him, except changing his diet to a healthier one and training him to be more gentle when interacting with people; aside from the overly-excited peeing once in a blue moon.

Last weekend, he started having some issues with urinating; peeing on his bed or on the floor while standing. We thought it was behavioral due to his age being adolescent, but when we were at a pet store with him, he had two huge accidents, leading us to believe it was medical (he didn't seem to be struggling to urinate and he would be standing, seeming surprised). The vet said his urine and blood tests came back crystal clear and healthy and started a guessing game. The medical issues mentioned were typically rare occurrences in younger female dogs, where the problem would have shown itself more often.

His symptoms cleared up after urinating like multiple bladders full and he was fine during the week, no accidents. This past Sunday, he was sleeping on the bed and he wet himself, then promptly peed on the floor while standing when we were cleaning, then again in his crate an obscene amount of urine. He seems to only have this issue on the weekend and I wanted to blame the water at the dog park, but he goes during the week as well. We're considering taking him and the records (once we get them) to a vet I trust more, but nothing showed in the tests he had.

[CA][Amazon] Looking For Cat Box Supplies

Our local pet shop closed down and with a newborn on the way I will be needing to shake things up with the cat supplies.

Looking for something easy to get on amazon.ca or from a Canadian retailer that ships online.

  • Hooded litter box
  • Paper liners (my cat tear the plastic ones to shreds)
  • Litter, currently use Sweet Scoop single cat and its been $38/bag lately

Currently, I clean and sanitize a basic cat pan and while it only takes 15min to do its a pain and often put off. also litter gets bloody everywhere and my cats a paw shaker. Might need a cat mat as well to help stop daily vacuuming. Lots of options on amazon.com but finding Canadian supplies are brutal or 3x the price and insane.

What's the healthiest pet one can own?

(Feel free to skip this little rant)

I have 3 rats and love them to death, but they are always sick and I already lost a young one to cancer.

I don't mind spending money on their vet bills, my problem is their quality of life. I hate seeing my pets ill, it destroys me. I already have many chronic illnesses, so that's why I have such a trauma when it comes to health. I hope you guys can understand my paranoia.

After my ratties pass I'm considering getting a different pet, and I'd really want one that is sturdier and healthier. This made me wonder: what's the healthiest pet?

In my experience cats are the healthiest animals I've owned, being chronic kidney disease my biggest concern when it comes to them, but I've never owned anything other than dogs, cats and rats, so I wonder if there are better options. Keep in mind that I'm very aware there's no such thing as a disease free species, but I want something close to that.

TL;DR: What's the healthiest pet available? It can be anything, from dogs, to cats, to horses, to birds, to lizards and others exotics like hedgehogs and sugar gliders. And with healthy I mean one that rarely gets sick provided you take care of it well.

(I currently live in Japan, so pets that are legal here would be preferred)

Cleaning up after pets with bath towels?

My friend and her family have three dogs. When they pee in the house, everyone uses bath towels to clean it up. The same towels they use after a shower. We are close enough that I was comfortable asking her about it and she said it’s not gross because urine is sterile and she uses bleach when she washes them. Is she right? We love our pets, but sometimes they're a little less than grateful. For example, we give them food, shelter, and our undying love, and sometimes they give us a dirty look. But since Love Your Pet Day is coming up on February 20, we're ready to give our grouchy pals a pass. (Actually, we're always ready—since they're so stinkin' cute and all.) One of my cats refuses to eat cat food. Will only eat dog food. I don’t know what to do.

I have three cats and two dogs. We graze feed all of them and they are all a happy healthy weight. The dog bowl stays on the floor and the cats get fed on top of our fridge because our one dog likes to eat the cat food if she can get at it. We have a series of carpet cat condos going up the wall next to the fridge so they can get up there easily.

My youngest cat will not eat cat food though. She eats and drinks out of the dog bowls exclusively. I’ve heard dog food doesn’t have the correct nutrients for cats. Is this something I should be concerned about? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I wondered if she felt like she couldn’t eat with the older two cats but the dogs were less... scary? Territorial? I tried setting some food out for her in a different part of the house but I don’t think she touched that either.

I’ve also tried a couple different brands of cat food thinking maybe she just didn’t like the taste of the kind we were feeding the older cats but that doesn’t seem to work either.

The kitten seems to be in with the dogs a little more than the cats (plays with them, cuddles and grooms them more frequently). So I feel like that also plays into it but I don’t think I can change that dynamic.

Best way to train kitten to stop biting?

My new cat is very affectionate - approaches anyone for attention, climbs on them, rubs on them, and kneads them a lot, then bites. The bites range from light to moderately hard, if she is very excited they can be hard. She bit me quite hard for example during clicker training getting the treat from my fingers. She also goes for exposed nipples... 😳 What's the most effective way to stop the biting? I can stop the instance by making a pained sound but it doesnt curb the behaviour. I'm reluctant to introduce her to friends because her insane loving can hurt.

Is my dog lazy or is he depressed?

Hi guys,

I apologize for formatting, I’m on mobile.

I adopted a 5 yr old Shih Tzu from a shelter back in November 2018. We both live in the city in an extremely small apartment. During the day, he sleeps all day and sleeps all night. Like literally all day (I watch him from a baby monitor), and until I come home where he wakes up, plays in short bursts, then goes back to sleep. He gets about 45 mins-1 1/2hrs of walking time outside per day on leash, and spends about an hour at the dog park every other day off leash where he can socialize and stretch his legs.

Now, since he sleeps all day and all night is there maybe something neurologically wrong with him? I’m sure this sounds silly, but I have never ever owned or seen an adult dog sleep 24hrs a day like he does. Am I giving him a good life? I worry he’s sad. Am I exercising him enough? Is it normal for dogs to sleep literally all day and all night?

Tl;dr : dog sleeps all day and all night. Is he possibly depressed? Am I providing him a good life?

New cockatiel

Hi.

Ive had a female cockatiel for about 1 year that has bonded with me.

I got her a friend, a male cockatiel that is 2 years old, who is super tame (when i got him) and loved cuddles, kisses, etc. He never would bite or even hiss, etc. I finally introduced them and now he has become pretty moody and bites my face when we cuddle randomly and runs away from my finger when I try to get him to step up. I have seperated them for the time being. What should I do? Have I messed up?

I accidentally licked some cat poop. Am I okay?

My kitten is in a cone cause he is picking his wounds. He’s 13 weeks old. I was just done eating and picked him up. He got a little smear on my shirt. Stupid me thought it was food and licked it. Though I didn’t swallow and went to soap my mouth. I definitely tasted it and know it was poop.

I immediately mouth washed and soaped my tongue.

Is this alright? I got him from an adoption clinic last week.

(New pet: help) i just got a new 2 months old shih tzu and it won't stop crying.

Please bear with me while I tell you the back story.

My cousin's dog gave birth to 6 puppies and within those 2 months the puppies stayed at home with them inside their house. They were a family of 7, so lots of people + 7 dogs/puppies. My cousin gave me one of those puppies (named him Fluffy) as a gift for my birthday. We are a small family and its always quiet in our house plus we dont have pets.

I never had a pet in my life, fyi. So i bring him home last night and planned to set him up in my patio, separating him with just a glass door where he can literally see us inside (my sister is afraid of dogs so that's the original idea) but everytime I go inside the house or just generally leave him alone he would cry. So i took him inside and he wouldnt sleep unless he's near people (literally would cry if he's not touching my leg). We are a small family, so its generally always quiet in our house, contrary to my cousin's house.

I originally was planning to buy him a big cage (and fill it up with soft stuff and toys) so that he can have his designated 'bed room' at night and then in the morning i plan to just set him free in the patio to run and play.

And now it is 6am and i just set him in the front porch (it is spacious) and he would just sit in front of the door and cry. (Loudly when we walk past the door) What do I do? Help please.

I want to teach him to be independent but i think back in my cousins house he would just ALWAYS be beside the people (literally) and dogs and now he's afraid of being left alone.

Am I over reacting ?

About yesterday my three month old shi zu (not sure how to spell it) had recently been in some irritation after I have gave him a bath , I did use dog shampoo and a dime full of conditioner so it’s easier to groom his coat. But shortly after I finished brushing him off and he was about doing his own business he was picking or biting something on his leg or butt ?? Ofc I got worried and tried to look up his symptoms and thought his anal glands but they weren’t inflamed ? So I’m not sure if it’s a spider bite or maybe a reaction to the conditioner but I’m not sure when my family should bring him to the vet or not. He is still biting his behind now and then and he’s also crying but only when we don’t give him enough attention. What could it be ?

Start feeding dogs raw diet?

My dad wants to start feeding our dogs raw food (which i'm not against), and I wanted to learn more about the implications of changing their diets. We have a 1 year old French Bull Dog and a 12 year old Maltese-Mix (we found her, so we don't really know). My worry as that these dogs are small and so far bred away from the kinds of dogs that would benefit from a raw diet. Is it safe to switch their diets from the bagged food we usually buy to raw organ meat, raw chicken, etc. What should we look out for and is there anything we should know before switching their diets?

Stop dog from peeing in the house

I have a 4 year old dog that's a mix breed (part Schnauzer/Yorkie/Dauchsund). He's a very happy healthy dog who is crate and potty trained. HE's been fixed for 2+ years now. But for some reason, he will not stop marking his territory in the house. We have a fenced in yard and so when he has to go he will whine and we'll let him out take him on walks etc, so it has nothing to do with not getting to go outside. But as soon as he comes back into the house within 5 minutes he has marked (or peed) on something in the house. We aren't sure how to stop this behavior. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Should I walk my dog and potentially hurt her leg or keep her inside the house?

My dog is a black Labrador mix who is about 9 and a half years old. Around 6 months ago, while my family was playing with her, she hit her back left leg while running up the stairs. Since then whenever I walk my dog, she limps for days afterward. When she walks she's always super happy, and now that we don't walk her anymore she tends to be really sad (and fat). I want my dog to be happy and not bored all the time, but I don't want her to get hurt. What do I do?

[ADVICE] Our cats are being bullied by a new tom to the area and we don’t know what to do...

Two of our cats are fixed females that are quite small and as countryside cats are out most of the time except during nesting season when we control them a bit more. One in particular is afraid to go outside for more than a few minutes at the moment because this big tom is terrorising them. Have any of you got any suggestions as to how to get him to stay off our land that won’t also stress our cats out more?

integrating a dog and cat

my girlfriend and i are are very much at the point where we’re ready to live together and we’re looking for some help on how to integrate our fur babies. gf has a 2 year old 50 pound dog who is the sweetest, most wonderful girl. she had a few experiences early in life with other dogs attacking her, which has understandably led to issues when strangers/other dogs approach her. she can get nervous and barks. she’s not violent at all though. i have a 4 year old 20 pound cat who i found at a shelter when he was one. he is an indoor kitty and is pretty content with eating, pooping and sleeping. he is comfortable but can still be skittish, due to his days on the street, i assume. i brought over a cat bed of his and our dog sniffed it a bunch and has even laid next to it. we’re beginning the process of bringing the bed back and forth to familiarize their scents with one another. before we have them meet for the first time - which we’d love suggestions for that, too - any tips on the best way to integrate and make this as easy a transition as possible? thanks!

I can feel my cat's bones

I have a cat (breed: American Shorthair). Her age is unknown, but we took her in 5 years ago and she was a fully grown adult by then.

Lately while petting her I've been able to feel her bones a lot more than usual. This is something I've recognized in older cats, so I was confused. She doesn't look like she's lost any weight, but she's very fussy so I'm not leaving food related issues out of the equation.

Anyone who is knowledgable about cats please suggest some reasons as to why I can feel her bones more. Is this just something that happens to cats when they get older? Or is there maybe a more serious issue?

Science Says Your Dog Adopts Your Personality Over Time

People often joke that dogs will grow to resemble their owners, and not just in appearance but also in overall temperament, body language, and personality. Well, a new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality has presented some pretty amazing evidence that our dogs actually are influenced by our personalities.

Excuse me

If I post this in the wrong subreddit, and any suggestions would be much appreciated...

I recently lost my 19 year old puppy, it’s still very much a struggle to look at pics of her, but would love any suggestions on an app I could possibly download to make a video/collage of her.

I don’t have a lot of money, so the pictures saved on my phone and through Facebook are the only ones I have, and I would like to have them all in one album or video, and save it.

I’m deathly afraid my phone will crash before I can do this.

>1 week kittens

Edit: the kittens are less than a week old, chose the wrong sign

Fed the mom from a distance, found she had abandoned one yesterday morning. Brought formula to feed it, then donated the formula to the shelter when we delivered the kitten to them for fostering (yes we checked before taking the kitten). Last night I brought more food and she had abandoned two more and moved nests. Found her new nest nearby and put the kittens in, then woke up early today to check on them. She moved back to her original spot but left a different two. I have them in a blanket with a hot water bottle beneath it in a box. I don't have formula. Will they be alright for the next long while until the shelter opens in the morning?

Middle of the night zoomies - anything I can do to make it quieter for my landlord below me?

Hey friends! My cat gets a serious case of the zooms at random hours at night and my landlord is constantly asking me to lock him in the kitchen overnight because my cat’s “flight path” is right over his bedroom. I understand that it must be annoying but I’m super attached to my fur baby and the thought of him spending nights in the kitchen kills me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on something I can put down on my floors to soften the sound?

Thanks!

Do you guys like this hamster enclosure idea?

I've been inspired by the YouTuber Hopping Hammy and I've been researching a lot about hamsters out of a recent obsession. I'm developing a cage idea for my office/bedroom and I'm wondering if this is a good idea or if it probably won't turn out as expected (I mean, they're animals...they're gonna do what they're gonna do not what you want them to do).

The main cage is going to be either an IKEA detolf cage (learned about this from the YouTuber Victoria Raechel) or a 75 gallon fish tank. Either way, it will have a natural set up to it. On one side, the bedding will be about 10" deep for burrowing, the other side will be more shallow so to add an appropriate size wheel. Various hides and toys will be around the detolf cage for obvious hammy use.

On top of the enclosure I'll have a shelf covering part of the cage with OVO hamster cages above. I'll essentially be stealing Hopping Hammy's design in this video (just skip to like 1:53ish) only the middle cage (hers is blue) will be a sand bath instead of typical bedding. Then, I'll be using a bunch of tubes to connect these OVO cages from the main detold cage over to my desk where it will connect to a 20L tank (my desk is under my loft bed on the wall adjacent to the wall the cage will be on). This way, if the hamster wants to be by me while I'm working he can just travel the tubes. Also I can watch him more from my desk since he'll be right next to me in the 20L. This next part might be the trickiest to figure out, but I also want to somehow get a OVO cage to connect up by my bed so if he climbs up there I can possibly watch before I go to sleep or maybe even take him out and have him on my bed with me.

Few things I should mention and some concerns. First, I'd prefer this enclosure to be for a syrian hamster but if a dwarf hamster would work best then I'll adopt one of those instead. I'm aware this is a super expensive project, I have quite a bit of money saved up and even if it's not a lot I'll be buying this and setting it up piece by piece not all at once. Some of my concerns are if the hamster will even use the extra cages that I'm connecting to his main cage? Will be get stuck in these tubes? What about getting lost? Now, this is just in the planning stages at this point so nothing has been purchased yet. I know that what I might be picturing in my head won't work in practice. If anyone has any advice, ideas, opinions, etc. feel free to let me know. Idk where is even an appropriate place to ask this type of thing so I just searched "hamster" on reddit. If there's a more appropriate place to ask this, lemme know.

If you have any questions or need clarifications just lemme know

Advice to Rescue Cats from Abusive Caretaker

Hello. I don’t post much at all, but I am in a stressful situation and I have no idea who to turn to.

My girlfriend recently moved halfway across the US out of risk of becoming homeless and has been working her butt off to get a new job and work towards her independence. Unfortunately, she had to leave her two cats behind where she moved from, letting them stay with a family member who already owned pets under the agreement that she would come back to pick them up within 3 months. The family member, however, tends to be a little unstable and, after two weeks of care, cut the time down to just 1 more month. In her dramatic way, the family member expressed that at the end of the time period she will just kill them, give them to somebody or let them be strays. The pictures we have been sent of the cats so far showed them missing huge patches of fur, and looking particularly thin.

We have been trying to put together a game plan to get the cats out in such a short time period, but my girlfriend is currently going through the hiring process with a company and has yet to receive a paycheck, leading to even more stress.

Does anybody here have ideas or recommendations for how to deal with this unfortunate circumstance? We are hoping the time limit might be extended through negotiation, but we want the cats out of that household as soon as possible.

Thank you for you consideration!
