Help with 6wk old kitten - bathroom problems.

Hello!

I had recently taken in a kitten that is approximately 6 weeks old.

He was adopted into our home on Sunday. This is the first time I’ve ever had to teach a kitten from scratch how to use the litter box, as all the other cats I’ve had were already trained.

It’s different with this one, as he was born outside.

I’ve been having to take him over to the litter box, and he seems to be getting the hang of it. Sort of.

You see, he’s only peed once in the litter box.

I’m unsure of the other times he had, as I’m finding it difficult to catch him in the act (or at least, pick up on his signs.)

I’ll take him to the litter box usually after a nap/meal, and half of the time, he’ll poop.

At first when I brought him home, I stimulated him to get his goods going. However, I have a female cat who had been mothering and stimulating him; so it’s been a big help having her around.

It may be poor timing on my part, but I’ve been having trouble catching him when he pees.

I have him scheduled for his shots here within the next two weeks. I plan to bring it up with the veterinarian, to see if it’s not something to be worried about (that is, if he hasn’t caught on by then.)

I’ve recently lost a precious cat to kidney failure a couple months ago, so the training has been stressing me out on a personal level. Ever since then, I’ve been very cautious - even with my adult cat.

Am I being too impatient, or is it not unusual for kittens to have accidents? Maybe he still needs time getting the hang of it, but it just makes me worry.
