Cat is wondering too far, and not coming home at night

I just want to start off with saying I'm a new cat owner, but my brother who I live with has had a cat for about 12 years, so he guides me with my cat ownership

My cat is about a year old, and we let him outside during the day. Usually around 10 am, and he'll come back in the middle of the day for food and water, but then he'll get back out. We feed him and our much older cat around 7pm every night, but we always put his food up because he doesn't come home usually until 10pm-12am.

Every other night for about 6 days, he's stayed out all night, and only come home in the afternoon. When he came back we kept him inside because we don't want him doing that or getting eaten by a coyote.

He has a collar and tag, and I've gotten a few calls from people because he's wandered a block away, or to the park close by.

It worries me a lot with him being so curious. He's going further, and staying out later and won't come home until he pleases. He has a good home, we keep him well fed, keep his litter box clean, and give him lots of love, and play time. I don't want to make him an inside cat, as that would be unfair to him, but I also don't want to be worried about him not coming home. What can I do to get him back in at a reasonable hour, and not go so far? Is there a reason he's doing this?
