Wanting to Adopt a Dog for Companionship

Hi everyone,

I have a family dog back home but since I've moved out and am moving into my own place upon graduating college and starting my internships (till December) and then looking for a job at the start of next year.

I got my first dog when I was 12 and love him like my sibling. I would never take him away from my family though because he's happy with them and a mommy's boy. I love him and have missed him terribly through my time in university, and sometimes have felt lonely and anxiety-prone without the presence of an animal.

I don't think I qualify for a service animal and would not be looking to go down that route, but I want a dog that I can take care of and share my love with. I genuinely feel happier whenever I'm around my dog at home and less stressed out. I take care of him too, and am as involved in his care as my parents. Because my dog has had a number of health issues since a puppy (irresponsible breeder), I know what it's like to take care of an animal at a high level, so I will be able to provide properly. I also have the finances.

The issue is that my parents are against this and don't want me to get a dog until I get a full time job, because I will have to move back home (they don't live in the US) if I am unable to find one around December 2022. My mother thinks that the burden of caring for the dog will be on her as some of my adult friends have adopted their own dogs, moved back home, and put the responsibility on their parents. I made it clear I wouldn't be doing that as I don't believe it's right in the first place.

As much as they want me to wait, I don't think I can go much longer. I am not adopting on a whim and will place myself on a waitlist so it could be a few months, but I would definitely feel better knowing I have a wonderful puppy on the way. I will be moving to LA and I don't know anyone there either, so having a pet at this time would be important to me. I am ready to have new adventures with a new doggo, even though I still absolutely love my old boy back home. I also feel much healthier when I care for and love animals, and just feel emotionally whole.

I was wondering what you guys think and if you've had a similar experience where you feel like you needed a pet in your life. I would also be open to hear any suggestions on what you think I should do. Thank you for reading
