George the barn cat came into my life when I noticed how much skinnier he was than his brothers. he was the runt, he was bullied by his siblings, and they wouldn’t let him eat. he was so skinny, in fact, that i was deeply concerned he wouldn’t survive if he stayed there.
so, i took him home. and he’s the most loving little dude on the planet. however, he was meowing at night and doing all kinds of crazy things during the night, which caused me not to sleep and it began to affect me at work. i’ve been late on numerous occasions and am now in quite a bit of trouble for it. i decided to get him neutered, as he is about 9 months old and very very wild. and i also didn’t want him to start spraying because honestly that’s gross.
so George was neutered on April 16, and he has not been the same since he had to start wearing the cone of shame. he very rarely eats or drinks, whether the food is on a plate or in a bowl, and he seems very depressed. he sleeps on the floor or in the bathroom sometimes, and doesn’t want to love on me or sleep with me like he used to.
the instructions given post surgery said he should wear the cone for 10-14 days. tomorrow is day 10, and i am leaving town for the weekend to go to a friend’s wedding. i have a friend coming by to feed him until i get back on sunday.
i take the cone off from time to time, usually 2-3 times a day, and as soon as it’s off he is back to his normal self. but he absolutely hates it when i put it back on, and he goes back to being very depressed and standoffish.
when i took him home after the surgery i noticed the stitches were white, and i can’t really see them anymore. but every time i take the cone off he tries to lick at them or mess with them, which is obviously the whole point of the cone.
i’m just worried about leaving him here in this cone-induced depressed state, even with my friend checking in on him a few times a day. how long does the cone actually have to stay on? how do i know the wound is healed if i can’t see the stitches anymore? i would feel a lot better if i could just take the cone off tomorrow before i leave, because then he at least wouldn’t be depressed and alone...like i said the paper says 10-14 days and tomorrow is day 10.
advice? comments? anything?
i even got him a new softer cone rather than the plastic one he came home in and it hasn’t helped at all....
