Hi, all.
We have a 4-year-old male cat that was adopted at <1 year from the local animal shelter. He was neutered before we got him, and was a normal weight.
He has ballooned up to 20lbs. He has frequent UTIs and has been on Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Care consistently for 8 months or so. The feeding guide on the label says the following:
WEIGHT OF CAT -- CUPS OF FOOD
6 -- 1/2
8 -- 5/8
10 -- 3/4
12 -- 7/8
14 -- 1
16 -- 1 & 1/8
18 -- 1 & 1/8
When we first started the prescription diet, I googled it and Google said to feed the cat according to the weight they're supposed to be, not the weight they currently are. We had initially been giving him 1/2 cup of food twice a day, but upon verifying this we dropped it to 1/3 cup twice a day. This was 4-6 months ago.
Since then, the only change in the cat has been that he constantly yells at us to feed him and begs for food and sometimes pees on clothing. He hasn't lost any weight at all. How is this even possible? Does he really burn so few calories that he's not even burning what he eats? There's no cat treats or anything he could be sneaking.
I'm baffled. I don't want him to die of fatness! What do we do?
