So my red eared slider turtle laid eggs. Where do I keep them and how do I hatch them?

I don't have an incubator. But I do have a tray of sand where I buried the eggs in. I don't think it's enough.

Girlfriends lost cat came back - but now her other cat HATES the runaway.

I posted on here asking for tips to find my girlfriends cat (thank you everyone for tips on bringing him home!!) He showed up randomly almost a week later after he ran away. But now her other cat absolutely HATES him. The other cat she owns hisses and tries to fight our cat that came back, despite them being pretty much BFFs and always following each other. Can anyone explain why all of a sudden the other cat would be hissing/hating the cat that ran away, despite them being together for their entire lives minus one week?

I was joking with her saying her other cat is just mad that he ran away, but I don't understand why she hates him all of a sudden.

Just found a nestling, and the nest is nowhere to be found

I don't have any experience of taking care of birds, It's a nestling Maya / Sparrow I think and I'm from the Philippines, and from what I searched is that I only need it to put it back on the nest but the thing is the nest is nowhere to be found, but there's a group of Maya roaming around, and I'm afraid to leave it since there are many stray cats in here and it's too hot outside right now. Is there any advice to taking care of the bird? Should I bring it inside and take care of it? Thank you in advance!

Dog in crate

I’m not sure if this is the right forum to post this to but my neighbor keeps their dog in a crate all day. I live in a townhouse and the walls are really thin and can hear the dog barking and whining. You can also hear the dog shaking the crate (like it’s jumping in it). This goes on all day until 11pm. Does this warrant as animal neglect?

Birds and the weather question

Hey fellow bird-owners, I had a question about the weather and pet birds. We have 2 little lovebirds in our backyard, and they're fine in a very spacious cage. My concern is that with the heat/cold weather (it's southern California so we don't freeze, but the heat can be punishing). Any tips to help regulate the temperature in the cage? We have a tarp over the top to keep the worst of the sun/rain off them, but I'm hoping for ideas here.

Have a 6 month old kitten, and I just got a new 2 month old kitten, should they be acting this way?

Once I brought the new kitten home, I did the slow introduction. However, as soon I took her out of the box, my older kitten was all over her, grabbing her on the back of the neck and doing bunny kicks. This did not seem to hurt the kitten, but she does meow loudly when my older kitty does it. I have separated them multiple times, but she still makes a beeline for her as soon as she enters the room.

I have noticed other things, not bad, but she does seem to groom her so I take that as a good sign and some times she "chirps" at her, I guess trying to get the new kitten's attention. Should I continue to separate them? There is no negative behavior such as hissing or piercing the skin, but the constant jumping on her is kind of worrying me. I don't know if it is a dominance thing or what. Please help!

Ps. They are both girls. she is not using claws, but she is playfully biting.

Worried that my cat might get sick!

My dad let my cat out in my home's backyard to chill around for a bit. My family has been taking care of a stray cat the past few months that has been visiting our backyard by giving the stray cat food. My dad forgot to put away the remaining bits of food the stray cat did not eat yesterday and my cat ended up eating some of the food.

I am worried that my cat now may get sick from some disease. My cat is almost 2 years old and has received all of his vaccines, like rabies, cat cancer etc, along with his yearly flu shots. I have been worried all day today that he might get sick and I don't know if I am overreacting about it. I was thinking about taking him to a vet, but because of COVID, I am hesitant to bring my cat to the vet.

Should I have nothing to be worried about and my cat is most likely fine?

Recommend no dust/clump cat litters?

My cat just had PU surgery after repeated urinary blockages and right now I'm using walnut shell pellets to keep dust and clumping away from the surgery site. I want to keep using a no dust, no clump litter in the future for his health, but this stuff kind of sucks- it's very hard to tell if he's peed which is important since he's had so many issues, he won't bury his poop with it, and the pellets make my room smell like a guinea pig cage. Any recommendations for better litters?

Any advice to stop my cat from attacking kitten?

Our neighbor (we stay in a flat complex) got a kitten yesterday, and by the looks of it, it's probably just over 6 weeks old and they are leaving the kitten to go outside unsupervised. Apart from all the other dangers like cars and small holes to other areas, my cat has always been very aggressive towards other cats and she did not take well to this kitten, she immediately went on the offensive and I had to rush to go get her and she is currently staying inside. The kitten wasn't hurt. Now, from what I have read online, cats will usually have their "spats" and then tolerate eachother, but this kitten is super small and my cat could do serious damage so I can't leave her to go outside, and it's hard on her since she has been a outdoor-day, nightime-inside cat for nearly 12 years. The owners are also never home and their kids laugh and curse at us if we try and tell them to stop screaming (before the kitten) so talking to them won't help. I don't know what to do...?

Considering rehoming cat(s), need advice

I have two cats that have become too much for me to handle. I recently separated from my husband due to abuse and I’m expecting my first baby in a few months. One of the cats was more “his” cat, but when he moved out he did not take the cat. This cat now yowls for hours every night and attacks the other cat, causing her to urinate. I am waking up many times every night and early morning due to the loud meowing, breaking up fights, and cleaning up cat urine.

I also tried switching to pine litter to cut down on all the litter they track, which caused the other cat to start peeing in the spare room. Even though I’ve switched back to their regular litter she’s gone on the carpet in that room several more times, despite using a pet vacuum, enzyme cat urine spray, and endlessly scrubbing at the carpet and even pulling up the carpet to clean the subfloor.

Now I’ve found what I’m 99% sure is a tapeworm fragment on my sheets. They’ve had tapeworm almost a year ago which I treated with flea treatment and deworming pills. Except for when I brought in one of the cats as a kitten (almost 4 years ago), I have never seen fleas on either on them. They are also both indoor cats. I don’t understand why they are getting tapeworm.

I feel terrible about giving up my cats, but I can’t imagine living like this with a newborn on my own while also working full time. Any advice on rehoming cats, or why I should or shouldn’t do it is welcome.

Would a medium male bunny be good with a large female?

Hey guys! I have a 4 month old Satin male, he’s amazing with all of my animals and everyone he meets, and I would like to get him a bonding female when he is neutered in June (and get a 2-3 month old female between July and September). He is already a big boy and looks like a full grown bunny. I’ve always wanted a Flemish giant or a New Zealand/ Flemish mix (so she would be on the smaller side) but I’m not sure if a large breed and a medium breed would be good together? Also, are Flemish Giant females typically friendly? Elliot (my boy) is the sweetest little bunny I’ve ever met, never even nibbled my fingers and will let me pet and pick him up regularly, and I want to get another rabbit like that. Thanks guys! (P.s. I know not all bunnies are the same & their personalities differ even within the breed, I just mean typically!)

Cat went to vet for UTI, still showing signs of pain

Hi all, like my title says: my five year old male cat went to the vet recently with a UTI. They put in a catheter, kept him for a couple of days, the works. They sent me home with painkillers and a med to relax the muscles around his urinary tract, as well as some special food for urinary health. We finished those meds over the course of seven days, and he seemed fine.... until now.

Cut to yesterday, about four days after he finished his meds, and I see him displaying the same symptoms that I initially brought him in for: attempting to pee but nothing coming out, meowing in pain. So I brought him back to the emergency vet last night. He apparently peed inside his carrier at the vet, so they sent me on my way with another round of drugs and painkillers. But now that he’s been home for 24 hours, he still has not peed (he’s been trying to), and is still doing things like hiding in the corner and is clearly agitated and in pain. He is still eating his wet food, though.

I’m really worried, and am coming to this sub asking for advice as to if I should be as concerned as I am or if I just need to be patient and wait for his meds to begin running their course (He was given his first dose about eight hours ago). I know UTIs can be deadly if not treated properly, but having been sent home from the vet last night with an OK I can’t help but feel I’m being paranoid.

Travel carrier for 25lb dog?

I live in a large city and use public transit to travel to the suburbs to visit my family (1hr commute). I just adopted a lab/terrier mix about 24lb. I don’t have a car and don’t want to make my parents pick me up/drop me off every time I want to visit.

Does anyone know of a good travel carrier that is not too heavy or large for a 5’2 female to carry on a train? The platform is only a 2min walk so I’m not too concerned about the walk. More worried about how bulky it is and getting a carrier that will fit my dog. I am trying to train her to be carried in a large K9 sports sack backpack but she doesn’t seem to be getting it.

She is 24lb, lanky, about 22in from collar to tail.

Considering Adopting a Difficult Dog

TLDR: Advice needed. Considering adopting a 1 year old dog who has spent most of his life at a shelter and has been rejoined twice. Seems very skittish and difficult around new people.

I’m considering adopting a dog, after my 16 year old kitty passed away earlier this month. Lonely and need the companionship of a pet.

I found a dog at my local shelter who looks sounds like a good fit but our meeting didn’t go well. He’s a little over one, and has spent most of his home in a shelter. He was adopted and then returned twice. He’s not good with strangers.

I sat in the visit room with him for about 30 minutes hoping he’d start to get comfortable. Unfortunately, he didn’t come near me and looked stressed the entire time. I took him on a walk, which helped a lot, but he was still reluctant to interact. Eventually after giving him some treats, he let me pet him a little bit. He doesn’t appear to be aggressive, but terrified of strangers.

Can anyone offer some advice? I don’t mind putting in the work to help socialization, but I don’t want to overlook some very important red flags. I’ve adopted before, but the transitions to our home have been very easy. Very little training needed and eventually their personalities shined through. I feel this puppy could flourish in a place he was comfortable in, but I’m torn if I’m the right owner. I consider this a lifetime commitment, so if anyone has been in similar situations please share your thoughts.Thanks.

Is there any kind of assistance for my cats surgery? More inside

Basically, my wife's grandparents died and we decided to bring their cat into our home. The cat is, let's say, anti social. The cat doesn't clean itself.. We have two other cats she does not get along with. She just runs and hides under the couch or any small area. She will just stay there until we move the couch, she will poop and pee under there. We decided to move her to the attic so she has her own room.

Took her to the vet the other day to get her matted fur off. They said she has ear mites and stage 4 tooth decay on most of her remaining teeth - which explains the lack of cleaning (hopefully).

She eats good and goes to the bathroom regularly.

But basically this surgery is going to cost about 1,100 dollars and we really can't afford that in this point of our lives.

My question is

Do you have any tips to make this cats life better? Is there any form of assistance with a situation like this? We will have the money someday, but this is like a situation that needs taken care of now, she is in pain. Is there anything you can think of that will help me? I really hope this surgery helps her. I might sound weird but she smells awfully bad. Do vets clean pets? It seems impossible to bath this cat. Just really stressed.. thanks!

Cat keeps peeing on the bed

My 9 month old male cat (not neutered) has started peeing on my and his bed since the last week. He just sits there and starts peeing. I've taken him to the vet to have him checked out and the vet said everything is fine health wise. The vet said he might be spraying, so I've scheduled an appointment for neutering next week. I've thoroughly cleaned the areas where he has peed and deodorized it to my best abilities. Nothing has changed in the household that would cause him stress or anxiety, his litter and litter box are still the same, there's nothing new about my bed or his, my partner and I are still the same people, I'm not pregnant either. We give him food on a timely basis (3/4 times a day, wet and dry food), play with him and give him attention several times a day. All in all he's a very spoiled kitty and we're scratching our heads as to what might be going on with him.

Edit: he's fully potty trained, the only other time he has peed out of the litter box is when he was sick, which is completely understandable

Extremely active 1 yo cat, need advice

Hello, I come to you in times of great need (and a little distress). My 1 year old cat (female, sterilized), who has been diagnosed with tiger syndrome (I do not know the name of it in english but basically makes her prone to clawing/biting randomly and uncontrollably and very attached to me), is extremely active. I don't mind the occasionnal biting and craziness, as my vet told me she litteraly can't control her actions when the syndrome acts up and it shows (her body tenses up from 100% relaxed) but i'm learning to read her and let her go when I sense it's getting too much.

HOWEVER, She asks for attention (wether it's playing, food, pets etc..) basically all day if she's not sleeping. I was worried but a lot of people close to me and online attributed it to her being young (I got her at 3 month old), so I decided to wait for a bit. As of writing this today we've been playing for the past 3 and a half hours and I decided to pause for 30 minutes and she's already scratching the door in which i keep her "interactive toys" (toys i play along with her, she has plenty of other toys scattered around which she doesn't want to play with). It's her way of telling me she wants to play but even I am exhausted of running around right now.

This happens basically everyday since I work from home at the moment and causes me, and i'm sure her too, a lot of stress.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I don't want to spend time with her and take care of her, but I feel like I can't spend more than half of my days playing with her. When I told my vet how much time i spent with her he told me, a bit amused, that he wouldn't need a diet if he spent half as much time playing with his cats x)

I have Feliway running in my house in order to calm her down but it doesn't affect her much.

Do you guys have any tips for her to be more autonomous and learn to not be too dependent on me / being on my desk / asking for playtime so much?

I feel really bad asking for that because I love her very much and I do want to keep spending time with her but this is getting too much. I have never hit / sprayed water at her or other stuff of that sort and I don't want to. When she acts TOO crazy i put her in my bedroom alone for 15/30 minutes and she always calms down but then starts asking for attention as soon as she comes back.

TLDR : Cat wants a lot of attention (hours of play and petting every day), every other cat I had never asked for that much, same goes for friends' cats, and it's causing me a lot of distress, any solution?

Thanks a lot for your help guys ♥

My outdoor cat bit two people in my neighborhood in the last month - pull the last fang teeth?

So my cat (7) bit two people in the hand and both had to go to the ER and I really feel bad for them. My Cat has always been a bit moody and if you played with it you had always to be ready to pull your hand away or you got scratches. But scratches arent nearly as dangerous as bites so this wasnt a big problem. And he only did it if you touched him a the wrong spots.

He also bit me sometimes when I had to give him medicines or pick a tick but I never bleed and his teeth didnt puncture my skin. We also already pulled most of his fang teethes because the were infected and he has only one (left/top) left.

So I thought of just pulling the last fang teeth as well. He doesnt really need it for food. Any opinions or other solutions?

What do I do with what seemed like an egg?

I am not sure if this is an appropriate platform to ask this question, but I am looking for help and guidance:

I live on the 2nd (top) floor of my apartment building. There is an open-air staircase serving my apartment and the apartment next door. While walking down the stairs to go to work today, I almost stepped on what seemed like a white egg. I left it in a safe corner on the stairs hoping that the parents of the egg would come back for it. When I came home tonight, the egg was still there. What do I do?

I have spotted a couple of turtle doves frequenting my front door. They have been making more noise recently than usual. Is it possible that the white, oval egg is a turtle dove egg? I feel stuck in a damn-if-I-do, damn-if-I-don't situation: I feel sorry leaving the egg out to die alone, even though I wish the parents would take back the egg. But, I do not want to take on the responsibility of incubating and raising a bird, only to have the bird die on me later on (because I have zero experience caring for a pet).

Cat pees on us while we are asleep, i would like to know why

I found her on the streets when she was six months old so she still is a bit wild, but this is something else.

I brought her home about 5 months ago and she did her business in the litter from the beginning. Shes a bit shy, a little scared but shes done extremely well with us except for one little problem. If we let her sit on the bed, there is a 100% chance that she will pee on us while we are sleeeping.

The first time we figured it was because the door to the bathroom (her litter) was closed. Okay, no problem, we changed the sheets and aplogized profusely. Cue vicious cycle. The second time, the vet said she was 'punishing us' because we left her over the weekend.

So we stopped letting her sit on the bed.

But she's so fucking cute, we gave in again. She peed again, vet isnt sure, thinks maybe it was because she was upset that I was spending more time at home. Yes, my feelings were hurt.

So, no bed time. Now my wife is too cute, convinced that it wont happen again, so....

This last time, she sat on the bed for one day, maybe two, got a few pets and then boom. She peed at night, while we are sleeping. She doesnt pee anywhere else. Usually the same spot.

Regardless of how cute anyone is, this cat is not sleeping on my bed again, but i would like to know why she is doing this. Any ideas?

UPDATE: my cat it 3 years old and has lived in 5 houses (+8 short stays) across 5 countries. I was worried that our lifestyle might be traumatizing for him, but in the end I chose to keep him.

I posted here a couple of months ago, asking about whether or not I should consider finding a permanent home for my cat due to my hectic lifestyle.

You can see my my original post here. Warning, it's LONG!

I read all of your opinions and, in the end, chose to keep Weasley. This might be a controversial opinion, so I want to explain my reasoning. My hope is that this post might help other guilt-prone pet owners make an informed decision about whether to rehome their own cats.

  • Yes, he hates traveling. It is very stressful for him, especially when traveling between different continents! However, he bounces back very quickly each time, always in less than 3 days. There have never been any lasting side effects.

  • Vets in all countries have assured me that he is in extremely good health (and always praise me for it, hehe).

  • He had a mast cell tumor removed about a year ago, low degree, with clean margins. I don't know that another owner would have had the money to have this procedure done, and that could have cost him is life.

  • He is a VERY vocal cat, which I am sure would drive a lot of people crazy. It drives ME crazy sometimes, and I love him like my child. I cannot be certain that other families would always be patient with him like I am.

  • I am planning to stay in the new country for at least 2 years this time. After this, I plan to move to my "forever country", and finally settle down. Basically, we've been through the worst of it.

  • He has bonded with me very deeply - he is very affectionate, loves to sit on my lap, waits for me at the door when I return from work. I sometimes have to leave for a couple of weeks, but I think he knows I always come back.

  • More importantly, he has forgiven me - so I should forgive myself as well. In the end, I have nothing but good intentions, and learn from my mistakes each time.

All in all, I have a fair share of regrets. I regret having left him with different people before learning about TrustedHouseSitters, and I especially regret having left my boyfriend's family keep him in a crate for the time he spent in the US (please read the original post before accusing anyone of animal cruelty). Still, I've learned from these mistakes, and truly believe I am a capable, loving and extremely dedicated pet owner. :)

15-year-old dog is refusing to drink anything but toilet water or stagnant groundwater

For the last three weeks my dog has been refusing to drink anything but toilet water or stagnant groundwater. I'm not sure what to do, I have tried everything to get her to drink fresh, clean water, but she will dehydrate herself before she drinks the clean water. I have tried so many times to train her away from the toilet water, but she will completely stop drinking unless it's from either of those sources. I keep the door to the bathroom closed, but she will sit by the door waiting for it to open. Also, this is something that recently started. She has never done this before.

Any suggestions?

My dog started wincing and crying out of nowhere please help.

So I have a pekingese dog, she's only a couple years old. She out of nowhere just 10 minutes ago started wincing and crying in pain, and she isn't eating either. I even offered her too eat her favorite treats and she ignored them. I know something is wrong but idk what. She looks completely fine, no wounds that I could see and her stomach feels the same. Her gums look the same and she isn't drooling or anything. I would take her too the vet but specifically at this moment I don't have any money. Can anybody point me in the right direction on what could be wrong? Poor thing keeps wincing and closing her eyes and keep crying. I also checked her limbs too see if she hurt herself but she didn't wince when i moved her legs. Thank you.

Need advice on raising 6 week kitten

I was given a 6 week old (estimate by vet) male kitten by a work friend because she found it, unfortunately she gave away the brother so I couldnt get both but I have never raised a kitten this young. I have 2 older female cats who are 2 and 3 as well as a dog, unfortunately the cats are still very put off by him after about 5 days, so he cant interact with them but him and the dog interact fine, I was wondering if I could have general help and a few questions answered When should I allow him to free roam the hosue?(he is already litter trained) How best to get him and the other 2 to get along? How long can I leave him in his space(with toys and food/water Best way to get him to consistently drink water

Cat crying for hours straight

About 2 weeks ago I got a new 2 year old cat. For the last 2 weeks she’s just been staying in my room and i’m slowly introducing her to my other cat. I put my other cat in my moms room a few times a day to let the new cat walk around the house. I’m having a problem where the new cat cries and cries all night. Her cry is extremely loud and I am not able to sleep. She has food and water and I get that she might be bored and underestimated but when I play with her she doesn’t seem like she wants to engage. She’s also very cuddly and gets a lot of attention from us. She’s not fixed yet and i’m planning to do that next week. I was just wondering if anyone knew why she was crying so loud constantly and if there was anyway I could help her. I’m not sure if she is just doing it because she’s still adjusting to the new house or what.

What to do if I find a cat??

I was driving home from work and as I was about to pull into my driveway I saw a cat run out in front of my car and immediately stopped because duh. I got out to see if it was friendly or had a collar, it didn't have a collar but it wasn't skittish. I keep wet food in my car for my cat when we go on road trips so naturally I gave this cat some, it ate over half a can SUPER fast (cans are 6oz). I still live with my parents so I called my dad and asked if I could take it in for the night, he said no since we have 3 cats and this new one could possibly carry diseases. I walked over to my neighbors and asked if they've seen it before, three of my neighbors have seen it regularly and it seems friendly, they also saw some kids who had caught it in a box showing it off (wtf). My dad has also said he saw the cat walking around a few days ago.

When I got back from talking to my neighbors I left another wet food can out incase it came back for more but it had left by then. When I got inside I looked online for 30 minutes to check if there's any lost cats near me but I couldn't find any cat that looked like this one. Basically I'm wondering what I should do, it could be a stray but it seems too friendly to be a stray, it could be a lost cat but I haven't heard of any lost cats near me and it could be a indoor/outdoor cat and in that case what the hell.

In the morning I'm planning on calling my local animal shelters to see if they've had any calls about a lost pet, if they haven't had any calls, I'm most likely going to bring it in to check if it's microchipped. I'm also planning on printing some fliers out to see if someone owns it.

I'm moving out in a month and if the cat is still around by then and doesn't have an owner I'm completely willing to take it in, I just want suggestions on ways to figure out the cats origin.

I need help to protect my cat

Hello.

I am in extreme need for help, but before you can help me I have to tell you a little about my current situation. I live in Brazil, in an urban area, and we are having right now an average of 2k people dying everyday from covid-19. Okay, a month ago a pregnant cat entered in my house, and after 2 weks of she staying 90% in my home while being free to roam out whenever she wanted, I've decided to adopt her (and keep her closed in my home, wich she didn't mind). We like each other a lot and I treat her very well. But today something happened.

3 stray cats stood above my ceiling and started to cry loudly. Right now it's midnight, and the trouble happened 20 minutes ago. They were super annoying and eventually woke most of my neighbours. This made me REALLY anxious, because I share the same building with 5 other families, and if the stray cats continue to do this, my neighbours may report me to the owner of the house I'm renting, and I may be forced to give my cat to someone else. I definetively don't want this to happen.

So what I did was to climb up in the ceiling and spook the cats away. One of them eventually came back 5 min later so I've thrown some water close to him to frighten him. I am actually very worried about all of this, because I have the habit of going to my girlfriend's house, and when I do that, I must leave my cat alone for the weekend. She does fine with it, but if those cats appear again and start to cry the whole night while I'm away, this may be the endgame. The neighbours would complain and I wouldn't be there to spook away the cats. I will probably not leave my house in this weekend, but in the next it will be my girlfriend's birthday and I just can't miss it.

My cat is pregnant, so I can't spay her yet. She is closed in my house and have no access to the outside, but yet the cats managed to smell her scent. Do I have any option to prevent this from happening again? Can I pass the weekend away without this happening?

Thank you for reading all of this, and for being prone to help.

Lika thanks you too

[EDIT: Okay, I've just checked a dictionary and now I think I can explain my issue better: My cat is pregnant but apparently also in "heat" (althought she doesn't want to mate and is very hostile to those stray cats). I believe that the stray cats are after her because they want to mate.]

Tried to play with my cat and now he's acting very strange/scared of me?

So me and my boyfriend recently rescued a five-ish? month old kitten that had been thrown out of a car near our hometown, he was in really really rough shape. He's doing great now and we were surprised at how friendly and cuddly he was, literally the best kitten ever! Not shy around ANYBODY, the whole nine yards, can't stop gawking over how lucky we got. He's dewormed, all of his problems have been fixed, he has been neutered, up to date on shots, fully vetted and the whole nine yards. We have had him for almost two months now.

Tonight he was sitting on my shelf and I was on the bed opposite the shelf. He's usually in a pretty playful mood at night and we love to play with him. However he was on the shelf staring at me so I thought it would be funny to act like a cat to play with him. I stared him in the eyes and slowly got off the bed and onto all fours while maintaining eye contact because I'm an idiot and thought I'd look like a cat playing. However he puffed up and arched his back and started making the WEIRDEST noise at me and hissing if I got too close. IMMEDIATELY when he started to do this I backed up and I was so confused! He ran into the bathroom and my boyfriend held him and he was fine with him but WOULDNT STOP STARING AT ME. And every time I got close he'd hiss and make that same really weird noise (I don't even know how to describe it- I looked up funny cats talking and yelling like humans on Youtube and it was like that- like he was saying nonononono over again? idk). So we left him in the bathroom/closet area for about ten minutes and I went back in and he puffed up again but I kept doing the slow blink at him (I think cats like that? Idk apparently I'm an idiot) and he let me pet him and he was totally fine! Rubbing into my hand and acting okay. However he's still been acting so, so weird for the past hour. Every time I approach him he puffs up and flattens his ears but lets me pet him fine! He keeps staring at me but once he jumped up on the table and head butted my face like normal like nothing was wrong! Like I said though if I approach him he acts scared, and makes the weird noises again if I get on the ground to lay next to him. But if I'm petting him he's totally fine.

Reddit, how badly did I mess up? Is he going to be scared of me forever? Is there a way to fix that, or should I just let him sleep it off?

Completely accidental dog bite

So I was kicking the ball with my dog yesterday and I followed through on one kick and my dog literally sprinted into my foot pretty hard (she got hurt too, but she's completely ok like a second later), but the collision was pretty bad on my end. It hurt a lot, but I didn't think much of it until today (roughly 24 hours later). When I started to shower, I saw that there were 2 puncture marks and big bruising around one of them and my foot was a bit swollen around impact area. The bruising I can understand since there was pretty heavy contact, but I'm mainly worried about tetanus.

It's been a bit over 10 years since I last got my tetanus shot (was due for booster last August but didn't go due to covid). My dog got her rabies vaccine last summer as well (around July), and generally isn't aggressive she's the nicest thing ever. I'll be going to the hospital tomorrow morning (36 hours after impact). Is that too late? Is getting a tetanus booster 36 hours later too late for me?

How do you cope with waiting on illness diagnosis?

To be clear, I'm not here for anyone to diagnose my cat. I would like advice for my own mental health during this time so I can take care of my cat. I've been to the vet twice this month, and have another appointment in 2 days. She has all shots and tested negative for all the major scary diseases. The cat is not severely ill, and eats and drinks and has been given antibiotics, steroids and still just stays kinda the same. How do you stay sane while the vet figures this out? My last cat passed from cancer and while I know this one has been tested negative I still am terrified that this little 4 year old girl is going to be diagnosed with something horrible.
I have crying spells, days where I am just consumed with going through in my mind all the things that could go wrong.
Has anyone had similar times of waiting and frustrating test after test? And how did you cope? I appreciate any help. I love this cat like family and it's just slowly wearing me down.

Living in Fear for my Dog.

I live in fear for my dog that’ll she’ll run away and get hit by a car. She has escaped the house and ran across busy streets and we’ve gotten very lucky. I feel like the next time she gets out will be fatal.

How can I deal with the fact that she can easily run away and get hit by a car. I almost feel like it’s inevitable. I understand the circle of life but it’s sad that she doesn’t even know the danger of cars and how painful it can be. I do not know how to deal with this and I live in fear for her rather then just appreciate her life now. Any thoughts?

Kitten recently won’t stop bugging one of my older male cats

We got the kitten in February when he was around 4 months old. All of my older cats immediately bonded with him and they were all very close up until recently.

For the past few days the kitten won’t leave one of my older males alone. He’s always been really playful with everyone, but recently he’s mainly only been bugging him. It’s got to the point where my older cat won’t even be near him without growling and hissing. He refuses to even eat near him, when for the past three months they’ve been best buds.

Kitten isn’t neutered yet either (he will be soon) so that might also be playing a factor, although i haven’t noticed him trying to hump him or anything. If so, why would he only be going after this cat instead of my other two? And are there any other possible reasons for their sudden change in behaviour?

Cat Reacting to Vaccine?

Hi all,

My kitty received her 1 year old feline rabies vaccine today. She seemed fine afterwards. This evening, she refused to eat her food and has been mostly sleeping. She didn't come running when I took the treats out even (which is unusual for her). Should I be concerned? Is lethargy/reduced appetite a known reaction?

Is it abuse to leave a cat in a garage that has no temperature regulation for possibly hours on end?

When I am not home, my grandma goes out to the garage to smoke, and often my cat ends up in the garage and she leaves him in there. If you wait about 10 minutes, he will meow nonstop to come back in. I have told her many times she needs to let him back in, and when I am aware he is in the garage I always let him back In, but she never tells me and will ignore him for hours, despite what temperature it is outside. It gets below freezing here and last year it got over 100°f in the summer. Im often away from home for long periods of time and not able to let him in when im away, and she will fall asleep and neglect to let him in. When it comes to her dog refusing to come back in, she's all over that. Is there any way I can press charges for this?

Cats fighting over sleeping place but acting normally otherwise?

I'm not quite sure what exactly is happening...

We got our 2 (indoor) cats 13-14 years ago. They're brothers and get along pretty well. One exeption was early 2019, where we had to separate them for a few days because they couldn't stand each other.

Not sure if it's related, but I rearranged my room around 2 weeks ago. I now get much more light in my room and the cats love it. But every time one approaches the other one while they're lying in the sunlight, they get into a small 'fight' (a single slap) before going separate ways. It also seems like they're not sleeping together much lately...

2 days ago, both of them got into a big fight with lots of hissing and ripped out fur. We separated them for a short while and afterwards, they acted like before.

Yesterday was fine throughout most of the day, but in the evening they got into a big fight again and we kept them in separate rooms for a few hours. Before going to bed I checked on them and they acted normal again...

I'm somewhat at a loss right now. Both of them are currently sleeping on my bed, next to each other, like nothing happened. I'm not sure if they just went through a phase or if something is actually going on between them... Anyone maybe had something similar happening to them?

Long story short, noticed cat was limping, immediate vet visit with xrays. All came back clean, so they assumed just a sprain. Gave pain meds and rest. This was three weeks ago.

Should I let my cat have the experience of pregnancy before spaying her?

I have an 8 months old female cat who recently started showing "in heat" behavior. This is her third heat. I really don't want her to get sick, and it breaks my heart to see her going through the stress of Estrous. I struggled a lot before deciding to spay her because of two reasons : 1) taking away something that is her natural birth right / 2) the responsibility of taking care of a mommy and her entire litter

But i did finally decide to spay her, because i plan to keep her for life, and I don't know if i can handle the responsibility of breeding her. So I'm saving up some money to be able to afford all the costs, but it hurts to see her so stressed, meowing and yowling so much. She assumes the mating position whenever i pet the back of head, and quietly meows to me. My roommate has an intact male cat, so during her heat, i have to keep her in my room, and it makes me feel really guilty because she likes to roam around the house as she pleases and it feels like i'm confining her, taking away her freedom. She'll climb up to the window and start meowing like crazy. I'll try to put on like nature videos on tv to distract her, play her calming music or play with her, try making her sit on heat pads but nothing seems to help. She can't focus on anything else.

So i'm thinking, would it be a bad idea to let her get pregnant once before spaying her? Would it be a good experience for her, for both of us? In my country, it isnt a problem at all to find lovely families for newborn kittens, so I can make sure that each kitty finds a lovely home and will be taken care of. But what if giving birth makes the spaying experience more traumatizing for her?

What do u guys think? Is this a good or bad idea? If there would be any health complications, or any problem whatsoever that I am unaware of, I'd love to know.

Cats have tapeworms, but my parents don’t feel like dealing with it

I have 3 cats, two male tabbies and a black female Manx. Probably 6-8 months ago we noticed small, white, moving segments in the fur around the butts of both tabbies. The vet told us they were tapeworms, and gave us some medication for them (either a pill of some liquid to put on the coat of their necks, can’t remember). However, the vet also told us we need to steam clean all our sheets, blankets, and carpets as well as any of the other things the cats might sit on, and wash out all the litter boxes to get rid of eggs. Of course, since it’s a ton of work my parents have been sort of pushing it off because we would need to split the cats up one at a time for a week in our garage. However, I was just wondering, would it really be that terrible if the blankets and bedsheets didn’t get washed, and the cats still got treated and separated? Everything online says the tapeworm eggs are usually large enough to be visible and I can’t imagine there being any around. I also think it’s a bit odd that two cats got them at the same time, when the tapeworms supposedly aren’t contagious at all. I’m just concerned that the problem could get worse over time. Any advice or past experience would be much appreciated, sorry for the disgusting post topic

Stray cat scared of everything.

Me and my girlfriend adopted a stray cat we found in a parking lot last month shes been hidden away and cold towardsever since. If we get to close to her she runs away to hide in another spot and after a month weve still made 0 progress in getting her more comfortable in our house. She spends all her days hidden away and whenever she comes out at night to eat or drink shell play with our other kitten perfeftly fine yet the moment either of us so much as breathes shes back into her hiding space. It makes us both super sad having this animal in our home that we cant form a bond with eapecially seeing how she bonded wih her brother so easily. Weve tried rescue remedy and other pheramones to help relax and calm her down but nothing has worked to ease her anxiety. At this point were desperate for any help possible.

Can I get sick from my cat sneezing on me? & help needed on treating cat with cold at home.

This may sounds like a stupid question but I’ve read some confusing answers on this and can’t seem to find a solid yes or no answer.

My cat has been sneezing and pawing her face for the past 2 days and just started coughing (hard to explain, not full on coughing with the sound but I can tell that’s what she’s trying to do by her stomach) and breathing with her mouth open (every now and then) today. She has no discharge or oozing from the eyes or nose but her eyes do look a little watery to me.

I’ve been bringing her into the bathroom with me while I shower and started running my humidifier in my room. I’m going to get her into the vet Thursday morning - but are there any suggestions to help her feel better in the meantime? She’s still eating and drinking like normal, she just doesn’t seem as perky as usual. :(

Hi all, I am looking for advice/reassurance to help ease my tension. About a week ago I adopted a kitten (9 weeks now) and had been feeling overwhelmed of being responsible of another life in addition to working 9-5. After crying for days, I settled and felt better about my choice and felt less guilty of leaving him behind when going to work (my family members take turns spending time with him).

At first he would meow/cry every time I would leave my room and it would get louder and longer. Based on my family’s feedback, his cries have been decreasing but today he was different (at least to an over thinker like me).

Not only he would cry when I would leave, but follow me around when in the room and would cuddle and like being put to sleep like a baby. Now, I’ve noticed his mood/behaviour shifted.

Based on today’s update, he didn’t sleep much when I was gone and was eating a lot more (free feed when I’m gone compared to bringing it to him). When I came home from work, he did come to me for a bit but then left and was to himself. He also has been hiding under my desk near cables and other small spots more often compared to last week.

This has me worried and in tears. I’m not sure if he’s going through stress, mentally or physically but it’s breaking my heart to see him so.. quiet.

I would appreciate feedback on what this could possibly mean or if I’m over thinking this behaviour. I just really hope he’s happy and I would hate to see him otherwise.

Have to rehome my cat and I hate myself

I took in a cat off the streets about 2 years ago and have since developed a close bond with her. I had been planning for a few months to move to Korea after graduation for a job, and had saved up plenty of money in order to complete all the necessary steps for taking her with me. However, I took her to my family's house around Christmas time, and an hour and a half car ride traumatized her so badly she got a uti a day into the holiday and stopped eating. I took her to the vet after driving home, and the vet said she seems very nervous and recommended keeping traveling with her to a minimum in order to not stress her out so much. Now I'm feeling so much guilt right now. I don't want to make her feel like I've abandoned her and I don't even want to leave her in the U.S. because I'm so attached to her and I love her so much. On the other hand, I'm worried about dragging her all the way to Korea (14hr flight) when it's not even a permanent solution (I'm only planning on staying for a couple years before moving to a new country). I've got some people I know and trust and that she seems to get along with pretty well wanting to take her, but every time I think about giving her up, I start bawling my eyes out. I never wanted to be the person who gave up a pet because they became inconvenient, but is it selfish of me to want to keep her? I just want her to be happy and healthy and loved.

My cat is getting Pyometra surgery and I’m so worried for her.

It started as a normal vet visit only for them to tell me she was never spayed and needs pyometra surgery to remove her uterus. ( she’s a stray cat we just took in). She looks a little old maybe over 14 years and I’m so worried for her. They suggested immediate surgery as her condition can be fatal and id rather spend the money to help her than let her die. She never had a home and she came to us for one. We love her and we just want her to spend the rest of her life with us and not have to worry about shelter or food or medical help. The procedure is costly over $2000 and I’m worried about if it will be successful. What if she has complications after or what she doesn’t recover? My heart is breaking as I can’t imagine losing her, she’s a part of me.

Has anyone’s cat had this procedure done? Factor in their age, how did they respond to the surgery? Did they recover? Where their any complications?

What do/did you feed your cats to ensure a long and healthy life?

Hello everyone!

I have adopted three cats last year. They are 11 months old now. Like all of you, I want to do everything possible to ensure a long and healthy life. For those of you who have successfully achieved that, what did you feed your cats? I would love to hear your suggestions. Also, please let me know if any other choices in their lifestyle made a positive difference.

A little background on my kitties' diet: We fed them Purina Essential Care wet/dry kitten formula until now. We are transitioning them to an adult diet. The vet has recommended Purina Essential Care Adult formula. However, I am reading mixed reviews about Purina, especially it looks like most people do not like the ingredients in this formula which are full of meat by-products and grains. Some others argue that Purina runs a lot of trials to make sure that the food is safe and adequate.

Currently, we are feeding them Tiki Cats After Dark shredded chicken and quail egg, chicken and duck, and Feline Natural chicken and venison wet food. Have you tried these brands? How do these compare to Purina Essential Care?

Thank you in advance!

Feeling guilty about returning kitten soon

A few days ago my father brought home a 6 week old kitten. My younger sibling had been asking for one for a long time so he just got it. Ok. Nice, a kitten, what could go wrong.

First off, my younger sibling is not responsible at all, he clearly can not take care of it and only wants it just to play with. When he’s not playing with it he either locks it in one of the rooms or its cage.

So I decided to take responsibility which wasn’t a problem at first, I play with it, I clean its litterbox, I give it food, I let it sleep on my lap (since its the only place it really goes to sleep).

Sorry for making this long. The ISSUE: 1. I never wanted a pet in the first place, but I’m forcing myself to love it because I feel bad that it was separated from its 2 brothers. 2. My mom doesn’t want it 3. No one else can take care of it 4. It needs affection and bonding 24/7 and me being the only person who could do that, I really cant be committed to raising a kitten.

TL;DR: My father got a 6-week old kitten for my younger sibling who only wants it just to play with. I never wanted a pet but, I force myself to take care of it since no one else will, my mom does not want it nor do I. So now I feel guilty for being attached to it since were most likely going to return it soon due to the fact my younger sibling can not take care of it and nobody else asked for it.

Custom cat paw print jewelry

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone has done something like this before. My girlfriend has this awesome cat that she absolutely adores. I love the little guy. For her birthday I wanted to get her a custom made piece of jewelry like a ring or necklace with the cats paw print on it. I tired looking it up online but didn't really find any decent website for it. If anyone has any recommendations I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

Flea and Tick / Heartworm - New Kitten

I just got a kitten a week ago and was looking for some recommendations on flea and tick and heartworm products. The cat will be indoors at all times, and will be the only pet in the foreseeable future. Any help would be appreciated!

Am I doing introduction right so far or did I already mess up?

I currently just got a cat of my own, Camilla! My roommate also has a cat named Trigger, and I'm working on trying to introduce them correctly.

Camilla is laid back, gentle, loving, and sweet. The best I can describe her is literally a queen (thus why we kept the name Camilla). She's recently spayed and had kittens around 10 weeks ago, all of which were adopted before I adopted her. Trigger is a very curious, playful, energetic, and sweet cat. He's fully neutered and is overall a wonderful cat as well.

What I have going on right now is that we have Camilla's home base set up in our bedroom. She has an elevated food bowl, water fountain, litter, cat tree, and cat bed. When we took her home yesterday night, she hunkered under our bed for about 30 minutes but then was out all the time. She's very friendly and loves pets and declared her own spot on our bed where she normally hangs out now. She's always around me unless she decides she wants to chill somewhere else for a bit, but then comes and visits me after awhile.

Between how comfortable she is right away, how chill she is with everything, and the fact that she seems like she wants out, we decided to lock Trigger in his owner's room while he's home and in the room so she can explore on her own while supervised. This is where I'm unsure if I made a mistake.

She sniffed the door Trigger was behind and started hissing, just once, until I lead her away from the door. There was no noise Trigger was making that we could hear, but she obviously knew something was behind the door that she didn't like, most likely by smelling him.

I'm not sure if we did this all too soon or if I messed up and they will have a harder time getting used to each other. When I've open my bedroom door, Trigger is almost always outside and I believe they have seen each other at least once. While I was in the bathroom I heard a hiss, which I believe was Camilla sending Trigger right outside the door. I had to move Camilla to a 2nd room while the door to our bedroom was being worked on, and at that time Trigger was checking out our room and getting a whiff of her, which I thought was completely fine.

As I'm typing this, she seems to want to go out again. Am I doing this wrong?

If you would like to know what I'm planning on next: Scent swapping with a sock, having Camilla hang out where Trigger usually is, making them eat next to each other with a physical barrier between them (I was thinking a baby gate, but maybe a door first?), and then playtime together. All of this over the course of days/weeks.

Should my boyfriend and I spring for pet insurance?

Me and my boyfriend are adopting a wonderful little Schnauzer mix. He has dog experience but that means he had a bunch of outside dogs growing up in Puerto Rico so their care wasn't as structured as we plan to do here. We can afford a decent plan with nationwide that he can get through his job, but we know the dog has allergy issues. Any insight? We're wondering if we're just going to end up paying for nothing since that won't likely be covered.

My family wants the dog, but I don’t. What do I do?

So, back in October of 2020, my family dog of 12 years passed away. Cut to April 2021, and I’ve gotten quite used to not having a dog and actually prefer it.

After my dog passed, I realized I was not a caregiver. When he was alive, I normally pushed any feeding/walking etc. responsibilities to the rest of the family. I came to realize yes I love dogs, but caring for one is not for me.

So it’s today. My dad went to the rescue shelter to look at dogs. He absolutely adores dogs, so of course he would go looking for one. He calls my brother up, and tells us about a dog he’s found. My dad then asks the family over the phone if we want her. She’s a four week German Shepard mixed with something, a bit skinny due to her being a rescue, but fed properly should gain weight. My brother and mom say yes, no hesitance. Me, I think about it for a second.

Within five seconds, I am going over the fact that I am a terrible caregiver. But my family sounds so excited, so I say yes. I think, well, once she gets here, certainly I will be more open to having her around.

God was I wrong. She came into the house and I felt sick to my stomach with regret. I locked myself in my room and had an anxiety attack because of how guilty I felt. I knew then and there that there was no way I could care for this dog.

Now I don’t know what to do. My family seems to really like her. I want to stay locked in my room away from her. Do I let the rest of the family take care of her and ignore her existence for the rest of my days, or do I beg my father to take her back to the shelter? I’m completely stuck. Not to mention either way I would feel like a terrible person.

My male cat had to have surgery to remove crystals from his bladder. We bought litter that changes color to show abnormalities, and for 3 days it has been showing high alkalinity for him. Any idea how long we have to correct this? Weeks? Months? Any general tips or food suggestions?

As the title said, he had a blockage that was basically life threatening, so they had to catheter him and perform surgery to remove it. The vet said it could easily be a recurring problem without surgery, but we want to make sure to try the best food option we can ASAP to see if can reverse it. The problem is I have absolutely no idea how long these take to form. About 3 days ago his litter starting changing color showing a higher alkalinity, which means he is at risk of the crystals forming again. I just want to gauge how long we have to address this, because I don't want him to be in any pain. Now that it has happened we will know right away if he starts peeing outside the litter box and licking himself more often, but I just want to have a general idea of how long it could be before that happens again, should this alkalinity issue not be able to be fixed by food alone. Does anyone have any idea?

We put him on a mid priced urinary diet food, but clearly that is not doing enough. We want to just go to the most high quality stuff we can to hopefully stop this from happening again, so if anyone has any tips for that as well, or what has worked for you, please suggest.

Thanks!

Kitten Eye Infection

Hi guys so one of my kittens are 6 and half weeks old for a couple days only one of her eyes has been producing mucus and she’s been squinting from that eye. I cleaned it up last night with lukewarm water and a soft cloth but today it’s a little bit more close up. I don’t have access to a vet but I wanted to know if I could do anything from home? Also her eyes have fully opened so it can’t be because they’re still closed. Please help me out!

Oncologist recommendations for Delaware/Eastern PA area?

My 11yo feline has been diagnosed with Mammary Cancer, and I'm trying to find the most trustworthy vet to take them to. I'm leaving their life in the care of someone. I want to be sure it's someone who unnecessarily inflates costs, or misdiagnoses pets out of carelessness. Due to bad reviews online(and fake positive ones), as well as personal experiences, I have a LOT of trust issues with finding one.
