Are there potential affectionate or laidback indoor pets suited to working a 5 day week?

Hello!

So, I've enjoyed being a pet owner all of my life though it's predominantly been cats and dogs. 2y ago I raised 4 kittens from birth alone (pregnant rescue!) along with involvement with many other cats and dogs in my life, and I enjoy nurturing and caring for animals as if they are family. I'm 21 so still have lots to learn.

I have one cat currently - I kept him from the litter of 4 and he is wonderful. Unfortunately he's very much liking the summer outdoors and is rarely in the house. He is fit and healthy, but part of me is selfish and misses having an indoor pet that takes a bit more involvement with care. I'm autistic and live alone, and while I'm relatively introverted, animals are much easier to understand and cohabit with lol - along with being a lifelong special interest. I thrive on routine so relatively high maintenance or daily cleaning would not be an issue. I found kittens very rewarding due to routine being beneficial to them, too.

I am wondering if there are many pets which would suit working (fairly reasonable) chef hours as I work far too much for a dog however would like a pet to look after, keep up with care etc. I love rats but am concerned my cat would smell and thus pester them! An affectionate pet which does not mind me being out for work is ideal, if they exist - companion animals are fine if they are happy with others of their species during the day (can afford whatever / whomever they need) and I would have the rest of the day to clean, give company, care or whatever else needed. They don't have to be stuck to my side all of the time, but they would ideally not dislike contact or handling (so no tarantulas)!

I made a decent salary, but anything that will hike my electricity bill 4x is probably less than ideal, too.

I'm not going to run out and impulsively adopt an animal immediately after this post, so don't worry about that or take it too seriously. I'm just wondering what options may be available for me to research that I'm not aware of! Thank you x
