Tl:dr - could my cat be upset at my partner and therefore act out by peeing outside the box?
I have a 12 year old ginger tabby who recently started peeing outside her litter box. She will do it the one time and then the rest of the time will pee inside the litter box like normal. As soon as we clean up the pee she will pee outside again before resuming peeing as normal. My partner and I don’t know what to do and it’s become a strong point of contention between us.
We adopted a kitten about a year and a half ago and she’s playful and likes to play with my older cat…who unfortunately does not like her or her energy. I was thinking she is stressed because of her but even though the kitten has been here for over a year, the peeing problem is pretty recent. I don’t think the level of animosity she feels towards the kitten has increased. It hasn’t gotten better but I don’t think it’s gotten worse either.
I’ve taken her to the vet numerous times and she has had a history of crystals so she’s on the recommended vet diet. Her crystal count has decreased in her urine and she’s gotten shots/medication for urinary infection.
My partner recently took over litter cleaning duties (I’m pregnant and he won’t let me clean the litter at all) so I feel bad that he’s constantly cleaning her mess. Even after he’s completely changed out her litter and sprayed the tray the box is on, her first pee will always be outside the box. It’s gotten so bad that he’s always angry at her and I have started wondering if she doesn’t like my partner and that’s why she is peeing outside the box. I will ask my vet for a recommendation for a cat behaviorist but until then, if anyone has experienced anything similar I would appreciate any insight you have. I love both my partner and my cats so much and it makes me so sad to see both of them so stressed while feeling like I can’t do anything to help. Thank you for reading!
