I recently adopted a cat with a unique situation; I applied to a shelter in search of a particular cat, and while my Application was approved, the cat was already adopted but I received an email from a shelter volunteer that there was a cat in desperate need of a home and the shelter was full so they couldn’t take him in. His backstory was that he was a declawed, older male who’s owner had died, and when the cleaning crew came, they kicked him to the streets. A neighbor had let him into the garage and started feeding him. I picked him up from the neighbors bosses basement, and he was, not exactly what I expected; it turns out he’s actually a very skinny and malnourished young cat, roughly 12-15 months, intact, still with claws (I’m keeping him that way, don’t worry, but I do gotta get rid of his boys, if ya know what I mean).
The soonest vet visit is tomorrow (made the appointment Monday), and I read a vets advice that kitten food is fatty and can help a malnourished cat gain weight, but the past 2 days, he’s had a lot of diarrhea; he’s still eating (boy, is he eating)and drinking and playing normally, but his booty is a faucet. I looked at the kitten food, and it turns out it contains real milk. I know most cats are lactose intolerant, but I’ve found nothing on google regarding if kitten food can cause diarrhea. I am taking him in tomorrow, and I’ve switched him to adult food (still have a ton of kitten food, but I’ll donate that to the shelter or on FB to see if someone needs it), but he’s got me a little concerned. He also has a pretty bad uri and scabs on his ears and nose from mites (I gave him Revolution already, so it’s just the scabs left), he’s still in pretty rough shape though, but god is he cuddly and loving.
I guess what I’m asking is, other than the diarrhea, how have you dealt with a case like this? Any tips or tricks or advice to make him more comfortable while he’s healing and adjusting to a new house?
