Pretty long post so excuse me but I gotta describe everything.
He was a rescue which I've adopted around 3 years ago. He's a pretty scared dog due to his past but he's gotten over some of his fears in my house. To the point: At the very start, he was in a temporary home and he was eating dry dog food there normally. After we got him, he still was eating like he was at the start but eventually he stopped eating dry food so we started cooking chicken (and not a whole lot, I am aware dogs can't eat much grain) rice and that type of meals he was eating. Unfortunately after a few months/years due to not eating dry food, his teeth started to develop plaque and then - tartar. We went to the vet and I've been told that he's gonna have to be put asleep due the tartar being really unable to remove manually but I was also told to wait a while before bringing him to a vet to do it. I then decided it's time to switch his diet back to dry food and I started mixing it up with chicken and rice to ease his stomach and make him used to it. At first he was eating like it was the best meal ever, after a few days he was really stubborn with it.
Now - sometimes he didn't want to eat because there was a storm or heavy rain which he's afraid of so that's understandable but overall, I don't know how to make him eat it. I refuse to change it back to chicken and rice since it's not exactly the best diet plus his tartar is gonna get worse with it too.
Note: Sometimes I'd give some wet dog food (or wet cat food, he likes it too) so that it gives him more taste and it worked a bit but not always.
Note 2: I just wanted to add that he loooooves eating my cat's dry food, he could eat it at any time so idk what's his issue fully :/
I am looking for some people who maybe have dealt with similar fussy eaters.
P.S: I know him getting tartar on his teeth is my fault. I definitely should have checked his teeth regularly and fed him some dog chewies, dry snacks and safe bones. I am responsible for what happened.
