Hi there.
My s/o and her small, elderly cat moved in with me my large, young dog a few days ago, and my dog is having a tough time getting used to having the cat around. I know this will take time, patience, and training, but this isn’t the first time he has lived with a cat. The first time around living my roommate’s cat didn’t go super well, but I attributed that to my inexperience as a dog owner and let’s be real my roommate’s cat was a hellhole.
Meanwhile, my partner’s cat is very sweet, low key, and keeps to herself. She is curious about my dog but we keep them separated through a gate, due to my dog’s overexcitement and the cat unfortunately was de-clawed a long time ago.
80% of the time upon seeing the cat my dog will cry / whine almost incessantly, jump on the pet gate and try to paw through in a way that makes me nervous for both pets safety. He does know basic obedience, but only responds some of the time in the presence of the cat.
I know not all dogs are able to live with cats, but I really want this to work out. Any tips or advice would be appreciated!!
