I am choosing to post this here rather than a veterinary sub because I have repeatedly found that they are almost never willing to help and am tired of wasting my time. I am happy to receive anecdotal feedback from pet parents or medical advice from vets and there is no need to identify which you are if you don’t wish to.
My 16 y/o neutered male DMH/tabby developed a sudden limp on his front right leg two nights ago. There is evidence that he may have taken a spill on some stairs but we did not directly witness an incident. We brought him to an advanced emergency hospital yesterday where he is also seen by an internal medicine specialist for a few other conditions that have never affected his mobility.
The emergency doctor checked his leg, shoulders and neck and did not note anything remarkable. An X-ray was taken of his paw (although I still believe that if anything is sore, it’s his shoulder) which came back negative. He was prescribed buprenorphine 0.3mg/ml @ 0.15ml twice daily for pain. He received his first dose 9-1/2 hours ago as of this post, which seemed to help relax him, but not to the point of sedation, and allow him to rest comfortably. I carried him onto my bed and he was there and still seemingly comfortable when I woke up. He was able to walk around on the bed but seemed hesitant/unwilling to leave the bed despite there being a bench next to it to make it more like two steps than a jump. This is something he would have done without even thinking about only two days ago, with or without the bench. Upon picking him up and placing him on the floor, he quickly hobbled to the litter box which makes me believe he stayed on the bed all night.
I am basically wondering what my expectations should be at this point. Should I be bringing him back to the emergency room and insisting they do more radiology or giving him more time to try to heal?
