This might be a reaalllly stupid question, but is there any possible way to own a pet without having it live with you?

My mom is allergic to pretty much everything with fur, and she won't let me have a smaller animal, even a fish, due to the supposed "smell." Basically, she does not want animals of any kind in our house. We've been begging her for years, but she won't give in. Twice in the past my dad brought cats home without telling my mom, but she got pissed and we had to return them within a week.

I'm a college student, but I likely won't be able to move and get my own place for at least a few more years. I can't fathom waiting any longer to have a cute little animal of my own. So, I'm wondering if there's a way I could get an animal, but lodge it somewhere else, if that makes sense. I know volunteering at the shelter is a possibility, but I really do want to get a pet of my own. Do you know of any opportunities like this? I would love a little kitten or something. Or anything, really.
