I don’t find a lot of discussion of pet tube on reddit, with the exception of a few threads about Taylor Nicole dean On hobby drama. For reference, I’ve worked around animals my whole life- I’ve been in barns, worked on farm sanctuaries, and worked/volunteered in several animal shelters and rescues and one vet clinic. I don’t take care of animals for a living but I take the lives of animals very seriously and work very hard to respect and care properly for them. I have 3 mammals, 1 dog and 2 rabbits, which I research quite extensively and spend a lot of my time with. I also have a fish tank.
I’ve been watching pet YouTube channels for a year or two now and I’m finding that the majority of the larger channels are extremely problematic. These channels tend to have one person taking care of 20-100+ animals on their own. As their channels grow, the numbers of pets they have gets higher and it’s assumed that this happens so they can create more interesting content. A lot of these youtubers are relying mostly on Adsense revenue to cover the costs of their animals.
Every time these creators get a new pet, it seems like the quality of their care diminishes. For example, in earlier videos they may have appeared extremely knowledgeable about the diets for their animals, but over time the diets become inadequate (not the right kind of food, too much/little food, etc.). Rehoming animals also starts occurring (while still accumulating new pets) or frequent pet deaths. I feel like this was first noticeable with Taylor Nicole Dean and Happy Tails, but over time I’ve noticed a pattern in other channels as well, including King of DIY, solid gold aquatics, Emma Lynne Sampson, AfroHerpKeeper, and many others. At this point, the content isn’t even interesting anymore and people stop eventually stop watching, meaning that this person now has little resources to pay for their hoard of animals. A lot of these channels have a huge amount of reptiles, many of which have 30+ year lifespans.
I’m definitely not lumping all of these creators together- there’s many who keep a manageable number of pets or are involved in animal rescue where they can properly maintain large amounts of pets for the best interest of the animals, but I’m still saddened by this recent trend and how much influence they can have on their viewers.
