cat is acting really erratic suddenly?

Hi,

I have a 15 year old indoor cat that I've raised since his birth. He loves me a lot and follows me everywhere, he's my best friend. He sleeps on my stomach every night and is very comfortable with me. I have 3 nieces and 2 nephews, and my cat does not like them, but usually he just sits in the basement until they leave and he'll be back to normal.

Today when they came over, he not only hid in the basement but hid in a box for several hours on end. I left him alone, occasionally checking up on him to see if he was ok (his food + water bowls and litter box are in the basement, so I wasn't really worried about that.) After my sisters and their kids had left, I went to pick him up to bring him to my room and he was meowing like crazy, which is super weird for him because he's always been a quiet cat. He usually only meows to greet you, but aside from that, he's very quiet.

He was running around my room hiding in my closet, or in the corners of my room, or jumping on the windowsill and hiding behind the curtain. I tried playing with and and petting him and while he wasn't resisting the cuddles or pets, he was meowing in an agitated way.

He's calmed down a little bit, but he's still just sitting in the corner of the room. I put a treat in front of him and he's not taking it. This is really weird and abnormal behaviour. He's generally a very healthy and active cat for his age, no health problems, has a very young soul. Is this something that happens with age? Should I be worried/When should I start worrying?

Thanks in advance
