Help...I don't know what to do with my dog 😭

I have a slightly older dog (8 years) and she will NOT stop peeing and pooping in my apartment. She was potty trained as a puppy, but this has been and off issue the past few years and I'm running out of ideas on how to get her to stop. I live in an apartment so she doesn't have her own yard, but I take her on frequent outings to potty. I've tried increasing her outings, taking her on longer walks, etc. It doesn't help. It's not an incontinence or medical issue as I've already had her checked and the vet found no issues.

I always make sure to take her out right before I go to bed and sometimes she pees, but she never wants to poop outside. But once we come in and when I fall asleep (I can be awake a few hours after taking her out, but she always waits until I'm asleep), she goes on the carpet.

She used to go in the living room so I started shutting her with me in the bedroom thinking she wouldn't go where she slept. She still does it. Tried moving her food in the room thinking she wouldn't go where she eats. Still does it.

I try crating her, but she just whines constantly without rest for hours. Which means I also don't sleep. I work and have grad classes and I can't survive on not sleeping so crating isn't working.

I've tried the enzyme sprays that are supposed to kill the smell of their urine and discourage them from going in the same spot. It doesn't help.

When she goes outside she gets praised and rewarded and when she goes inside she gets in trouble (ie told no, put her nose in it, etc).

She is also spayed.

Are there any suggestions?? I'm about to lose my mind and I can't stand the constant mess, but I'm at a total loss as what I should do.

Cat is sneezing and lethargic but today's a holiday and vets are closed; what do I do?

Basically the title. He started sneezing a few days ago and we didn't really mind, but since yesterday he has been sleeping all day. He ate and drank a bit but after a while we started syringe feeding him water just to be on the safe side. Also, he keeps sneezing still, has runny eyes, and I saw him slobbering once while he was sleepy. We decided on taking him to the Vet the next day (which is today) but turns out they're closed due to a holiday. What should we do in the meantime?

My female kitten, 4 months old, doesn‘t play as often as its male brother. When should I get worried?

The male one runs around with me and plays with quite literally anything. He‘s obsessed with fake flowers, string toys, toy mouses, ping pong balls, phones, rope, carton bags, my bed sheets... you name it.

But my female one?? She only follows him around and gets scared of the paperbags.. she does play with toy mouses, flowers and bed sheets but not as much. I noticed it when i started showing her a string toy and she showed zero interests at all. The only time she actually gets pretty active is when we‘re outside. We only let them out with the leash but she climbs really well and loves to explore our yard. Meanwhile our male one gets frightened by any strangers noise and immediately runs back into our house. Idk.. its hard to explain but to say it short shes just not as interested as the male. Ps this isn’t a sudden change she has been like this since we got them.

How do you introduce a kitten to your dogs?

I just very recently got a kitten that as given to me by a friend, she is still pretty young and I'm just worried that my dogs might...do something bad to her. I tried introducing her to the dogs while she is safe on a cage then the dogs started trying to pry open the cage and I stopped the thing immediately.

What do I do so that my dogs won't start attacking the poor kitten? Maybe I should just give it back to the owner since I'm worried she might not even last a month here in my place...

What's fun for a Rabbit?

So my sister had a rabbit for 2 years now, but lately, she has been spending less and less time with it, to the point she barely interacts with it, my mom asked me to look for someone to give the rabbit to (for free, so she can have an owner that cares for her) i like the rabbit, she is sweet, never bites and loves cuddles, but what can i do for the rabbit it would actually see as fun, i've been taking it outside on a little leash i bought, and she likes it i thought, but what are other fun activies for a rabbit that didn't have much fun last few months?

What would you do? my cat was put to sleep today... :(

My cat turned 16 years old this summer She was lively, friendly and smart. She never had any major health issues throughout her life. This past week I've notice there was some more kibble left in her bowl, and then I've noticed she wasn't drinking water at least not when I am home (I work long hours) and then changes in her gait and she would mew loudly at random times. Also a watery discharge from her eyes on Wednesday and greenish on Thursday. I took her to the ER on Friday afternoon. They examined her, did some labs. She was very dehydrated. Vet said she had kidney failure and recommended to keep her in the hospital for a few days to treat her with IV fluids. I chose to take her home instead and to bring her to our regular vet today. ER vet gave her some meds and subq fluids. Without much improvement.

Today I brought her to the regular vet, ER sent labs and exam report from yesterday. He checked on her and said that the kidney disease is more likely due to age and developed overtime unnoticed, which resulted in kidney failure. and there was not much that could be done... I could either let her go on her own in the next several days or euthanasia... I chose the latter.. I didn't want her to suffer..

Would you try and let your older pet be treated for Acute or chronic kidney failure in the hospital if there was at least 50%chance that the treatment would work?

What should I do with my dog when I go to college?

Typing this on my phone. I love my dog Toby, he is my best friend and I don’t think I could live without him in my life. I’m currently a junior in high school, the youngest of my siblings, and I’m planning on going to college after high school. My mom is buying a house out of state and planning to move after we all leave for college. My brother asked her what she would do with the dogs when she moved she said she would “Throw him away.” my mom lies a lot but she is really impulsive and you can never tell if she will actually do something or not, plus she has let my dog run away before and I was the one who had to bring him home. Anyways, I’m scared that when I go to college my mom is going to give my dog away, the college I’m planning to go to does not allow dogs and I will not be able to rent an apartment. I don’t know what to do with Toby, she might keep him but she also might give him away. Does anyone know what to do in my situation? All my friends don’t like Toby because they think he looks scary or that he would bite them. I don’t know if there is any place that would take care of your dog for a year and let you take them back. Maybe I’d take a gap year to stay with him? I might just be overthinking what she said, it could be a joke but just in case I want to be able to protect him.

Why would you trust large dog around a small child?

Dogs like a great Dane, St. Bernard, English mastiff. Can weigh up to 200 pounds. Why would you trust such a massive animal around a small kid? All it takes is one swipe of a great Dane’s tail to knock over a child, they weigh a lot more than a kid. I just don’t understand why you address a 200 pound dog around a little kid. The dog is much heavier than them. And what if the dog jumped up on the child.

How do I make my cat eat less?

When I got my kitten, I always leave extra food just cause I don't want my cat to be skinny. She was born on April 1st, and is already a huge cat. I might have spoiled her too much, because she only likes certain food now, and rarely likes to eat anything beside store bought food. She is now constantly hungry, and everytime anyone walks in the kitchen she starts snuggling between your legs to feed her, even though she ate a mountain of food half an hour ago. We let her outside all the time, she runs around the neighborhood, and spends a lot of time outside and sleeps inside. How do I start to cut her food? I still want her chunky, but at this rate she will just get unhealthy. She is extremely healthy.

My kitten is grabbing and biting me softly

Why on earth is my 13 week old kitten who was shy when I got him, and is playfull sometimes is grabbing my hand and biting me gently but not aggressively. I find it funny and I know he has not intention of harming. He is layed down and was half asleep now that I think about it. Then when I was stroking him softly, he started grabbing my hand with his cute two paws and started biting and licking me gently. I know its not aggressive but its odd, he never really touched me and never ever took his claws out or bit me. If its wrong, pls tell me how I can teach him to stop it. I dont know how to teach him, I dont think he cares about what I say. I'v been with him for about 2 weeks now, if its relevant.

Cat Won't Stop Peeing on Soft Surfaces

We've had a female ragdoll cat for 5 years now, and she is an anxious, pariah type cat. Since she was young, she seems compelled to pee on soft surfaces - couches, beds, towels, etc. We've tried for years now to alleviate the situation, and we have good stretches (2-3 months), but it always comes back. What we've tried:

- Pretty much every soft surface is either behind a closed door or covered in painter's plastic.

- We've added many vertical/climbing areas for her to retreat to and feel safe.

- We've adjusted feeding schedules to reduce stress (more food, less food, more often, less often... tried them all)

- We've had her put on anti-anxiety medication.

In short, nothing seems to make it go away. If we uncover all the surfaces, it will happen with 24h almost guaranteed. Lack of opportunity seems to be the most effective tool, but it makes daily living very hard for our family (covering and uncovering couches/beds, constantly reminding the kids to cover things back up). It seems to almost be a compulsion for her, and we are at wits end.

Any thoughts?

Extremely lethargic post-catherization

Hi there,

If anyone can share some feedback,

My cat just turned four years old and had 2 obstructions unblocked (mucus plugs, struvites) at the ER 24 hours apart (I know, brutal). We opted to take him home the 2nd time, defeated that we would have to put him down after seeing him intensely suffer and wanted to spend one more night with him. The ER vet after the 2nd blocking unfairly pushed euthanasia without trying RX food on him, or giving us muscle relaxants for his spasms. We hadn't known anything about urinary blockages and were acting solely on professional advice. We spent the night reading up on reddit, the fees at that point were 3k for two catherization procedures to unblock and go. Fortunately, he came home energetic and playful, repeatedly eating and going to the litter. We asked for muscle relaxants and RX food after the second visit and he managed to finally pee that evening. Two days later we went to our own vet and had bladder checkup and x-rays done which showed no stones.

Currently, we are force feeding him (about a can of hills) and he goes to the litter peeing some marble sized urine 50% of the time. My concern is that he is EXTREMELY lethargic and weak... he will only get up to go to the litter. It has been eight days now since his last catherization and I would think that he would have a little less pain considering he is also on a lot of meds. I expected him to be a little bit more energetic as the days go by. His pee sizes have not increased, nor has his mood and energy levels. He is on gabapentin, prozasin and buprenephrine. Our vet says to take him in next week and as long as he is peeing. I am worried the 2nd time we took him back to the ER he was straining so hard it might have affected his kidneys. Is he not healing properly? What is the average period of rest post-catherization before cats return to their normal selves? If anyone can share some post procedural stories or information, please.

Thanks

How to gain my dog's trust back after someone hurt him?? Please help!!!

I have a spitz and we are really attached, were at least. I always give him baths at home because he gets nervous around new people and also because I feel its safer, but today we didn't have time and my mom wanted to send him to a petshop. I didn't like the idea but I went with her so someone would be holding the dog while she drives.

When we picked him up they had shaved him almost completely, we didn't ask for him to be shaved as from what I've searched its bad for this specific breed!! But the damage had already been done. We brought him home and he's so sad.

We tried not to stress him but he spent the whole day hiding and growling when we tried picking him up ( he loves to sleep on our laps or on the sofa while we watch tv). He seems particularly mad at me since I was the one who held him in the car on the way.

How do I gain his trust back? Please help he's my best friend :(

My cat pees in and out of the litterbox especially on my worn clothes. Might have separation anxiety. .

My cat has been having this issue since I adopted her at which she pees on my (worn clothes) whenever she gets a chance. Weirdly however she still peed and pooped in her litterbox, and she only does it on recently worn clothes. In the past I've taken her to the vet several‍ times and its not been crystals nor an infection. The vet therefore suggested it might be a behavioural issue. I suspect it might be separation anxiety. I don't know how to approach this as I am away from home everyday and don't have a fixed schedule. I want to help her so I'm open to suggestions.

five month old kittens still nursing on a female cat (that isn't their mother)?

so my family's kittens are about five months old now, they were removed from their mother around three or almost four, which isn't really early, so i'm not sure why they do it.

basically, one of them even more than the others nurse on one of our female cats that have never had kittens and have no connection to them, besides being related to their mother but i doubt they know that. they suckle on her and do everything as if she had milk, she takes care of them like a mother but she obviously doesn't have any milk, is it a problem? should i stop them whenever they get taken care of by her, or let them be?

their real mother do not like being around them anymore, she basically avoid or give them a slap if they get close, but they stayed together for a long time before

Need help for cat litter!

Hi guys!

I'm looking for a new cat litter for my 1yr old ragdoll that I just got from my cousin. Many people on the internet recommended me Petkit and I saw they had this new cat litter called PURA MAX, where it self-cleans cat litter and removes odor at the same time (which seems too good to be true for a busy cat owner like me). Has anyone had experience using it? I'm so tempted to buy because I saw they have all these smart sensors that connects to your phone so you can track your cat's weight and habits, which I think is pretty helpful. Although I'm a new cat owner here in the community, I really want to make a wise investment and buy something with good quality that I can continue to use for long term. Please advice~~ :)

Found a beautiful and affectionate cat

So I've been feeding this really friendly nice cat outside my house. Super cuddly. Always super hungry.

One night I finally decided to look for missing cat posts and stuff because I just thought it's so weird he doesn't belong to anyone. I found a pic that looked exactly like him on a missing cat page on Facebook in my town. I thought it was for sure him so I brought him inside until the owner could confirm..

Well it's not her cat (hers doesn't have white spot on the belly) and I don't want to take him back outside. He doesn't seem to wanna leave either. I am thinking of getting all the necessary stuff and taking care of him until I find the owner.

I'm still doing everything I can. I have calls in to the animal shelters around here to see if anyone's missing a pet and I'm in the missing pet groups looking for his owner. But if he truly doesn't have one would it be terrible for me to adopt him? He's been at my hip since he came in, and I have been considering an adoption at the humane society for a while now. Just never thought it would be a cat.

Had to start using the muzzle

I hate it, but we had to start putting the muzzle on our doggo when we go out for walks a couple of days ago. He is miserable in it and constantly trying to get it off, but we can't get him to stop chasing after every jogger he sees. Two days ago he even started nipping at one and that's when we knew we had to go to the muzzle for now.

It's really breaking my heart walking with him the past couple of days because he clearly HATES it, but I'm not sure what else to do. Any advice until we can get him some extra training? He is turning 10 tomorrow but we've only had him for about 8 months and don't know much about how he was trained/treated by the previous owner and it doesn't seem like he's interested in listening to us/behaving for us when he doesn't want to.

We WILL be getting training eventually, but it's not financially feasible at the moment (I recently lost my job and am trying to get back on my feet.)

My dogs dealing with hotspots

My dog started dealing with itchiness and hotspots about 2 months ago. We called all the vets in our area and all of them said they weren’t taking new patients due to Covid I don’t know why but that’s just what they told me so I was just like okay I’ll try to find something I can get over the counter so We got Veterinary Formula Clinical Care hot spot and itch relief and it worked Great for him but last night he started scratching at his head and I woke up this morning he had a decent size bloody spot on his head. He scratched so much he started bleeding. Since it’s on his head I know I could probably get him a cone so he doesn’t scratch at it until it heals but I almost feel like I would be making him suffer if I didn’t get him something that would help relieve some of the itchiness. But since it’s also bleeding I don’t want to put something on it or give him something and risk the possibility of making it worse. I’ll probably call some of the vets in my area but I don’t know if I’ll get many answers from them. So what would any of you suggest I do? Does someone have any recommendations?

is mixing dried and wet cat food in the same bowl safe?

My aunt told me that cats can choke when they eat wet cat food (i.e canned chunks/morsels of chicken, fish with soup/gravy) with regular dry food.

But I have read numerous articles where people mix wet and dry food in the same bowl to encourage their cats to eat the less expensive dry food.

Is it safe to mix them?

How do i know if i cat like me and how do i strengthen the bond?

About a month ago, i was on my way home and took the sheltered route due to rain. Right under my flat (Area A) a stray cat was meowing at people walking past it. Just entertained it for awhile and it wanted to get on my lap. Sat down and it rubbed all over my pants and noticed she has a healing scratch wound on her neck. I thought i was a familiar cat from another area and carried her there but turns out it wasnt and as i left it followed me back to Area A. And as i tried to leave Area A for home, she "tried attacking" me but it felt light, like it wasnt meant to harm.

I went to look for her for the next few days and found her own turf. (Area B, she even has a box she sleep in during the day) And have been visiting regularly every week to make sure she is okay and fed while petting her a little.

Thing is, Area A and B are about 1km apart. Every time i carry her out of Area B towards A, she will hiss a little and freeze up a little as i put her down. Im guessing its another cat's turf but i dont understand how she got there.

She keep rubbing against me everytime i meet her but not sure why, she doesnt really want to get on my lap anymore. So im curious as to what were the reasons she did.

She also sometimes hurt me while im playing with her so im not sure if it was intentional or on purpose. (She does this spasm scratching thing with my hands when i rub her sides)

Besides that, her tail is short (seems like an injury) so i cant really tell her mood other than by her ears and her meows (she is very vocal). Like she tends to meow lightly when i pet her bum area while she is sitting (not loafing). So im not sure if she doesnt like it or she does.

I guess i want to get to know her better and understand if im just a nuisance or if im just the food delivery person for her. And also if there are ways to strengthen our bond if there is any.

Cat is wondering too far, and not coming home at night

I just want to start off with saying I'm a new cat owner, but my brother who I live with has had a cat for about 12 years, so he guides me with my cat ownership

My cat is about a year old, and we let him outside during the day. Usually around 10 am, and he'll come back in the middle of the day for food and water, but then he'll get back out. We feed him and our much older cat around 7pm every night, but we always put his food up because he doesn't come home usually until 10pm-12am.

Every other night for about 6 days, he's stayed out all night, and only come home in the afternoon. When he came back we kept him inside because we don't want him doing that or getting eaten by a coyote.

He has a collar and tag, and I've gotten a few calls from people because he's wandered a block away, or to the park close by.

It worries me a lot with him being so curious. He's going further, and staying out later and won't come home until he pleases. He has a good home, we keep him well fed, keep his litter box clean, and give him lots of love, and play time. I don't want to make him an inside cat, as that would be unfair to him, but I also don't want to be worried about him not coming home. What can I do to get him back in at a reasonable hour, and not go so far? Is there a reason he's doing this?

Really R E A L L Y unpopular opinion...

I sometimes hate the pet community so much. I hate the fact that they love to jump into conclusions, I hate how they attack someone if they do one incorrect thing. I understand you're trying to inform someone about how hard a pet is... But you really can't just gatekeep an animal. It's so annoying and shitty when someone gets so mad when you ask "hey I want a cuddly bird" and someone replies with "shut up. Birds are not cuddly. Go get a life" or "should I get a hamster, I heard they are cuddly" and some person starts attacking them for even thinking they are cuddly. Its so irritating. Yes they are living beings but some people make m i s t a k e s. You don't have to attack them for it.

How do I curb the food-motivated crying? (My cat is OBSESSED with food)

My cat meows constantly, and runs to the kitchen ahead of me whenever I even walk in the direction of the kitchen. She meows and whines (kind of like how a human would whine, which I have never in my life heard from a cat) even an hour after after she had a meal. She tries to eat my food and begs for it whenever I am eating- if I get up for one second she will start chowing down, whatever it is, so I have to be constantly vigilant. Cooking is near impossible with a cat meowing and tripping me, and jumping up onto the stove to get a taste. This cat knows how to open up tupperware containers, can open cabinets, and ate through a plastic bag the other day to get at a bagel! She is constantly on the counters sniffing around and will eat the food left in the sink drain if I forgot to take it out.

Background: My cat was a stray and I've had her for 3 months. She has warmed up really well and loves to snuggle. At our first visit the vet told me it was probably food insecurity, or maybe that she wasn't spayed yet, or maybe a parasite driving her constant hunger! Now she is spayed, is confirmed parasite-free, and has lived in my food-plentiful home for over 3 months. She has no reason to be anxious that she won't get another meal!

She gets very good (expensive!) wet food twice a day at set times, and dry food once in between. Each time she is fed an alarm goes off letting her know it's time. I feed her with a slow feeder for each meal since she has a tendency to scarf like she hasn't been fed in weeks.

I have locked my cabinets with baby locks. I ignore her flat-out when she meows but it's making it hard to sleep, get work done, or really stay sane. I interpret all her sounds as cries and complaints now and it's hard to tell which are happy and which are her despairing wanting food. Sometimes if I'm in a meeting or want some peace or a good night sleep I put her in the bathroom with her bed, toys and water. Just to stay sane. I've even tried some punishment methods, even though I know you're not supposed to- like a squirt bottle. I have tried lowering the food bowl to her when she's quiet and pulling it up when she meows, but she honestly does not put them together-- that just makes her more persistent! The last few days when I go to the kitchen and she follows me crying and swirling around my legs I don't look down and just start singing LOUD...just to see if that has some affect.

I have scoured the internet far and wide for a solution and have really tried everything. I play with her and try to tire her out each day, she has plenty of toys and a cat tree, and gets to play outside independently on a long leash.

TLDR: I have tried everything and my cat still will not stop crying for and searching for food, no matter the time of day. Please help.

How to keep cats away from our feet so we don't step on them?

My family owns a couple cats and there have been times where they've been very close to us and we almost accidentally stepped on them

For example, when we're cooking in the kitchen, the cats are often on the floor very close to our feet. Since we're concentrating on cooking, we can't always be aware of where the cats are, and we're getting worried we may eventually accidentally step on them. Or they might be staying right behind us and by our feet, and we may suddenly walk in another direction while concentrating on something else, and end up almost accidentally stepping on them

One of our family members is getting old and can't always remember to consider first where the cats are before she walks around

Anyone have any tips on how we can be more careful to not step on them?

Kittens arm limp. Pls help

We gotten a kitten two weeks ago. The past week and has been very stuffy as if it has a cold. Today it stopped putting weight on its front left paw. If we squeeze it, it won’t react, as if it has no feeling there. It was acting normally until today. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

What is happening in this tik tok?

The video is of a girl dancing and the cat attacks her when she does a split. The cat seems okay and the girl didn’t hurt her either, but I’m so confused. People keep saying that maybe the cat viewed her dancing as body language and it pissed the cat off? That the cat thought it was meant to be violent towards her/him? I was wondering if anyone knew what could be happening here. Here is the video.

How to check a cat’s pulse if he’s always purring?

My cat has been having a heart arrhythmia and murmur, and the vet gave us a medication to try on him, but I need to monitor his heart rate. I’m trying to find an artery on his left front leg like the vet said so I can see what it’s like before I give him the medication, but I can’t feel anything because he purrs as soon as I touch him because he thinks I’m petting him. It’s incredibly adorable and hard to resist but he won’t stop. Any advice on how I could be able to tell a heartbeat from movement/purring?

Why does my cat give me “love bites”?

She will be cuddling on my lap and all of a sudden she will bite my hand. Actually, she mostly bites my face and neck (which is a huge bummer when you’re allergic to cats). She never breaks the skin, but it’s still freaky. I read online that “love bites” mean she is over stimulated and to stop petting! However!! She literally bit me as I am writing this. I’m not touching her. She’s the one sitting on me, grooming herself and biting me every once and a while. So, why is this? Because if she was being playful, I feel like she wouldn’t be casually sitting her and go off and play with her sister. If she was overstimulated, I feel like she would leave? Or at least stop sitting on me. And man if she gets overstimulated by just sitting on me while I read or use my phone, then I’m not sure what to do. Anyways, what does this mean? Thanks in advance! Sincerely the girl who’s got red blotchy skin all over her neck and face because little kitty likes her random bites.

Can even the most affectionate cat breed compare to the loyalty and overt affection of a dog? Are there any other alternatives to dogs? Help my dumb ass find his dream pet

To provide some context, I am a guy in his 20s living in Ontario, Canada. My sister (who lives with me along with our parents) badly wanted to get a cat, and she was able to adopt a domestic shorthair male cat about 3 months ago.

The cat was 4 months when we got him, and is now 7 months old. He's a great little guy, next to no fuss when it comes to taking care of him, and does not react badly to traveling or new people. He's even more affectionate than the average cat - he will sleep with me, (usually) comes when called, and will occasionally "check up" on me to ask for some head pats. He is NEVER aggressive, even when I try to piss him off, LOL (Seriously, I have never heard him hiss, not even once. Except for that one time a friend's dog spooked him).

Point is, the cat is a great little fella.

However, I quickly learned that even this great little bud is not the best fit for me. I greatly prefer overt affection (lots of cuddling, petting, spending time together etc.) Unfortunately, that is too much for the cat. I often end up petting him too much, and he moves away.

I doubt that any cat breed can handle this kind of overt affection for long before they get irritated. However, I think this kind of thing is probably straight up most dog breeds' alleys. I did quite a bit of research into parrots as well, but it appears that petting them anywhere other than the head sexually arouses them, and leads to undesirable behaviors.

The most affectionate cat breed I know of are the Siamese and Maine Coon breeds. Do you guys think that these are as affectionate as dog breeds?

IMPORTANT: I will probably need to live by myself in an apartment for the next couple years, working a 9 to 5 job, so the little guy will have to handle being alone for a while most days of the week. I also like to go on road trips in a small car.

Are there any pets that you guys think will fit me? I am open to adopting too!

Just a reminder to put your pet in your will

100% you should make a guardianship plan for your pet(s) so that no matter what happens, they’ll always have a safe and loving home. Things happen. Right now, who would take in your pet if something happened to you? Where would they go?

There's free online resources like FreeWill and the like, too. If you already have a will, it isn't hard to add a little part about where or to whom your pet should go. It's just a good idea.

Diabetic cat has been on insulin for a week and still peeing outside litter box. Is this a problem or should I wait it out?

My cat was diagnosed with diabetes last week and I've been giving him 1 unit of insulin every 12 hours with his food. He has completely returned to normal in terms of his behavior and happiness, the only problem that persists is that he still continues to urinate outside of the litter box. When I picked him up from the SPCA the assistant that handed him to me told me that this behavior should stop immediately, but I've been having to clean up puddles of urine twice a day outside of the litter box. I left them a message, but they are usually pretty slow to respond so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this problem. He was checked for a UTI while he was there so that isn't it. Is this something that is going to disappear further into the treatment or should I still be concerned?

Cat won’t stop jumping on stove

I have a 4 year old cat who is very energetic and she has her own tower and PLENTY of toys. I don’t want her to jump on the stove or kitchen counter but she keeps doing it. I have tried literally everything, deterrent spray, spray bottle, just picking her off the counter, yelling “NO!”, aluminum foil, sticky tape and she’s just so disobedient and persistent. The spray bottle does get her off the stove but she just jumps on it when I’m in bed and she wants attention 🤦🏽‍♀️ please give some creative ideas on how to keep my cat away from the kitchen. I do not want her on the stove or climbing into the dishwasher and all over my dishes.

Cat owners I need your advice on something, sometimes my cat lays near my office chair and I have this fear that one day I will forget he's there and will roll back over his paws or something. Can someone think of a creative way to ensure this never happens?

99% of the time I'm aware he's there, and I've never done it, but the other day I rolled back quickly for something and realized "holy crap if he was there I would have ran him over".

Other than removing him from the room or setting up a cage, where's a creative/simple way I can ensure this doesn't happen? Can I modify my chair in any way? Is there some sort of barrier I can set up? Just trying to think out loud but can't think of a great solution.

Introducing Cats with URI

We brought home a cat last week who had a pretty severe upper respiratory infection. She has been in antibiotics for about a week and is set to finish them this Friday. The soonest I can get her into the vet is 2 weeks from then. Her condition has improved dramatically and she’s no longer sneezing or lethargic.

Can I start to introduce her to my resident cat after we finish her antibiotic course?

My kitty has a fast growing tumor. How do I know if it's really her time to go? She is supposed to be euthanized at 5 today...

I don't want to talk about what happened because I've written about it so much here... but on Friday it was discovered my kitty had a tumor in her liver. Yesterday we took her to a different vet because no one was answering about the results or to set up a biopsy at the other one... anyways, we took her to a VCA vet and they said she isn't looking good. She hasn't been eating or drinking and has been puking. The vet told us that a biopsy may not be the best thing because she most likely won't be able to survive with the anesthesia. They said that they could feel how big her mass is during the exam they did... so we decided to give her some fluids and anti-nausea medicine and to have her come home with us so that I could spend one final night with my baby, and she is to be put down at 5 PM today.

I need help... is this the right choice? She just jumped on the window to take in some sun, but it was only for a few minutes. She's now hiding under my bed again... am I doing the right thing? This was all so unexpected and we never would have guessed that her tumor was growing so fast. We did not even know she had one until Friday, even after taking her to two vets and after two panels of blood work and an x-ray and a mouth exam. The vet said her organs looked great and that he wished he had bloodwork like that. That was October 9th... I just don't understand how nothing was seen then, and how fast this horror has progressed.

Anyways, I desperately tried to contact the vet about the next steps and to set up a biopsy asap, but the whole thing was a mess... they hardly answer the phone and the receptionist was going on back and forth on who would speak with me (surgeon vs. Doctor). It was like pulling teeth to get the ultrasound results as I called the vet 60 times and emailed them over the weekend, and no response. We had so many tests done this past month and they didn't show anything aside from low platelets on October 9th, and after that visit where they gave her some injections, she perked up souch and started eating again. We took her to three vets total. There wasn't anything until that ultrasound on Friday. She hardly can look at me in the eyes... I don't want to cut her life short (she's only 5 and I've had 4 years with her), but I also don't want her to suffer...

Am I doing the right thing?

I just can't believe how fast this all has happened. This baby was never sick before aside from when I first adopted her. A URI and it was fixed with antibiotics. Now this damn tumor... how was it not detected before? I just don't get any of this. This all began with her not eating about 5 weeks ago. My little girl and I were supposed to have many years together. I feel so sad and broken in my heart. Not even two weeks ago she started eating again after some steroids and she perked up so much... she was doing her tricks for her treats and everything. Now it seems like so much of her spirit has already left her body. I just can't believe this. I am so distraught.

Transitioning an inside cat to an outside cat?

what's that black stuff in my cat's henry's pouch?

About three weeks ago, I noticed some dark speckles around the outer edge of my kitten's right ear, a lot of it concentrated in his henry's pouch (little vestigial flap on the outer ear). Being a first time pet owner, I catastrophised having figured they were ear mites & took him to the vet ASAP. When they tested the ear sample, they said it wasn't mites but it WAS a burgeoning bacterial ear infection & prescribed me some ear drops to put into his ear daily for 7-10 days.

Flash forward to today and I notice that his henry's pouch is full of black gunk Again and it may be filling up faster than it was before (granted from what I can see when he doesn't chomp at my hands when I check his inner ear canal, there doesn't seem to be that same black gunk in there). Do I take him to the vet again to have them retest his ear or just try to clean it up?

Much appreciated gang and sorry if this seems like a really dumb question!!

Wobblers Syndrome? Advice? Experience?

Just got back from the vet today. My 4 year old mutt dog (mixed breed, 73lbs) has had significant changes in the past 6 weeks. First symptom/issue was yelping when jumping onto a very high bed. She is a very high energy dog and has done a ton of hiking/running and basically has always had an offleash walk everyday. In the past 6 weeks we have gone from a yelp jumping onto a high bed (complete normal energy levels) to a dog who doesn't want to walk around the block and has very low energy. Other things that have come up include unwillingness to stretch forward and extend legs back (second stretch after dogs do that whole downward dog pose), starts shaking her head then stops or slows down, wide stance when walking slowly, and yelps if i pick up her front paws (standing on hind legs).

All blood and urine has come back clean and had a set of xrays today to check out spine/hips/knees. Hips and knees looked perfect, no issues. The vet was focusing on the lower neck vertebrae as our discussion prior to the xrays led her to believe it may be wobblers. She showed me the xray afterwards and pointed to a spot which indicated a potential mild concern which would confirm wobblers.

Has anyone experienced this with a dog? What did your situation look likely? Any vets have any opinions?

Kitty Anal Gland Help

Recently adopted an adult cat and had him moved into my apartment. He’s been showing the regular signs of stress as he adjusts (kitty cold from suppressed immune system, loss of appetite, etc). But he’s generally rapidly improving and getting more and more comfortable. However, I’ve noticed a strong odor coming off his butt. He seems to be using the litter pretty regularly, though his stools are still pretty liquid. It definitely smells and seems like an anal gland issue. There was one instance where it even secreted a bit of foul smelling fluid (ew). Is it from stress and will it pass on its own? When should I start to be concerned and is there anything I can do to help?

Any advice on missing feral cats

I have some feral cats in my back yard I’ve been taking care of (yes I got them spayed/neutered) it’s a mother and her 3 kids. One of them. Every now and then they all go out and will be either gone for the day or leisure around out in back patio. One of the cats named goose, is usually kinda like a mammas boy, he’s always close to his mom and he never strays far from the group, unlike his brother maverick who usually goes more rogue. But goose recently has been missing for 5 days now and I’ve been getting very worried cause any of the other cats I can see it happening but definitely not him.

I checked as much as I could in the woods and didn’t find him. We don’t live in an area where there’s big crazy predators, at the worst maybe foxes, or raccoons. We live in a cul de sac as well so there isn’t that much woods until you’re in someone else’s property. We did get heavy rain today yesterday and the day before

Anyone think there’s a chance he could still be okay? Only thing that worries me is that it’s not like him to be gone this long, the other cats yeah, but not him. Also I ruled out him getting hit by car just cause we definitely would’ve seen by now

Any advice on what can be done or any words or similar experiences to help encourage he’s okay would be appreciated

How do I get my cat to use the litter box?

He has already peed on my clothing during a previous night, and this morning, I awoke to a poop right next to my bee. His papers told us that he was house trained, and we're using the same litter brand as the SPCA does to try and make him comfortable. at this point, I've introduced him to the litter box a handful of times already.

Tipps for good "hide n seek" or "peek a boo" toys for cats?

I have an indoor kitten and have so much anxiety that I'm not fulfilling her desire to hunt. I have 6 different kinds of wand toys but she gets very easily bored from them. At the beginning they are super fun for her and and she really chases after them but after 2 days of playing with the new wand, they bore her and she just grooms herself while I do all kinds of movements to try to get her to play haha.

Even if I rotate the wands, she still gets bored! The only one she seems to enjoy is a wand which has a feather on a wire. I can hide the feather beween the crevice of my couch and cushions or quickly poke it under the carpet. The other wands have a strings attached and are a bit more challenging to "hide". She's only interested in a toy once she can't see it anymore.

So if any of you have a similar cat and advise on good cat toys I would be very happy to hear about it! I also tried "da bird" but again she's only interested in it if I quickly kick it under the couch so she can no longer actively seee it. I love my kitten (Her name is Pike from critical role!) so much and I want her to have an engaging play session.

Will my dog and 2 cats be fine after my other dog died?

My dog, Rufus passed away yesterday due to issues with his kidneys and lungs. I was wondering if my dog and 2 cats would be mentally affected by this.

[Cat] Small apartment with no outside space

We are looking to get a cat but our apartment is only 530sqft/50sqm in size with no access to outside.

I wonder if any one has any experience with an apartment of a similar size and if their cat is coping without a large amount of space and no ability to go outside?

I am thinking it’s probably not worth it and might be slightly cruel, but I would love to see if people know otherwise.

Thanks

How many pets do you all have?

I just read that the average household only has 1.5 pets and that seems like such a low number! I’ve got two dogs and two cats, what do you all have?

Help with Stray Kitten

The night before I kept hearing meowing and discovered a kitten underneath my porch. It won't come to me but I left it some food. The next day it poked its head out but I couldn't get it to come to me. By the time night came, it came up onto the porch and got close but it still wouldn't come to me. It's meowed non stop. I bought a live trap and baited it and we finally caught it. I took it inside and let it out where it ran behind the couch, and it kept meowing all night. This morning when I got the kids up for school, the cat was meowing even louder and it did pop out somewhat and I did get close enough to actually reach out and pet it this time and then I picked it up. I was petting it for about a minute and it did actually purr but it got away from me again. Now it's behind the couch again continuing to meow. I know I should take it to a vet but it's very hard to get a hold of the kitten. It looks healthy and uninjured but I don't understand why it won't stop meowing. I'm also uncertain of its age but I looked at a picture guide online and it would at least be 5 weeks or older I would think.

I also have a mini rat terrier that I had to put in the back bedroom all night because her high pitched yipping will scare the kitten, but I can't keep her in there forever. I have to let her out but I'm afraid the kitten will get lost or stuck behind the couch in fear! I'm trying to get her to drink water but it's difficult.

Girlfriends cat is terrorizing my life

About half a year ago, I moved to my girlfriends house to live with her and her two (lovely) cats. In the beginning, there was no issue. I remember cat A once peed on my clothes who were laying around in the bedroom. I googled for this behavior and this could be "normal" because she sees me as an intruder.
Ok, accidents can happen, and months moved by, but the pee problem became worse and worse. At this point, we are forced to close every door (bedroom, bathroom, office room) or she pees on things laying around. I constantly have to check there are no objects laying on the floor or she pees on them.
Her favorite pee items are: bed mattress, clothes, sofa, blankets, jackets, laptop, backpacks etc.

I suspect it's always cat A who does the peeing. At one point, my girlfriends was out of town and she peed on me while I was sleeping. Not directly but with her shaking out, I felt some liquid on my face. We always discover the peeing when cat B is around us while cat A is nowhere to be seen.

We have a lot of arguments and discussions about it. I blamed my girlfriend for not cleaning the litter boxes in time. When looking up the problem, this was mentioned often. We can rule this out because last time she peed on something while having a freshly cleaned litter box. We have 4 litter boxes for two cats. (two are outside on the terrace where they can walk)

I think the problem became worse after cat A became sterilized but I'm not sure. Recently, we had her blood checked by the vet. We got the results and all looked good. My girlfriend was advised to buy some stress reliver thing you have to plug in the electrical circuit. (which I think is nonsense and only cost money, but ok).

Here we are now, having her checked with the vet but he doesn't see a problem. But the problem is still there, I just discovered two other objects she peed on and I can't take it anymore. I do love both cats but one is really terrorizing our life and it puts a lot of stress on our relationship. If it was up to me, I would do cat A away, but this is no option for my girlfriend. It would be heartbreaking for me aswel, but something has to change, because this is not live able.

Why Human Food Should Be Given In Moderation To Dogs

A lot of pet owners practice handing over food scraps to their dogs. Although this is not a suggested practice, doing it in moderation will not disrupt your dog’s diet and continue maintaining his nutritional balance. Learn more about this article at the given link.

Dog harness vs. collar: which is better?

Hi everyone. I have a small yorkie around 10 lbs and I’m wondering if I should continue using a dog harness or transition to a collar for him? Is it harmful to him if I just use a collar for his walks? I recently got him a collar to put a tag on it in case he gets lost, but I tried walking him on it once and he walks so much better with it (rarely any tugging). With his harness, however, he always tugs on the leash on his walks. We’ve been to three different classes (and completed them) to fix this but it’s never gotten any better.

A very long move out of state, need advice on stressed-out cat.

Hi, I’d like to put a quick Mentions of Abuse TW at the top bc it applies to the circumstance (at my expense, not hers thankfully).

TL/DR: Had a bumpy transition moving that left my 11 y/o cat very stressed before we even did the big move, and now I havent slept in days because she meows like crazy at 4am, and she’s refusing to eat her wet food which contains her medication.

Two and a half weeks ago I moved out of my abusive household while the abuser wasnt home, and got my cat out safely and with no hassle. But, she and my abusers cat had also been left alone all week, so she was already a little out of sorts when I came to get her.

I had to stay at a safe house for a week and a half after moving out fully, but my hosts were allergic to cats so mine had to stay holed up without me for a week and a half at my dads. She’s never been on a long car ride, dad’s was an hour and a half drive. My dads cat and mine have history of disliking each other, so we had to lock my cat in his bedroom and set up her food and litter there. The two never came across e/o, but he’d sniff around the door and meow at her.

The move was Saturday AM, drive was long, about two hours or so. I was the first one in at least so I left her alone in the smallest BR while the movers brought everything in, and then set up her bedroom a few hours later once I had all my furniture set up so she could have my room. Her food and litter are both in here, not incredibly ideal but I have nowhere else to put it.

Roommates moved in Sunday night, and people have been constantly in and out setting them up. I introduced her to both, shes very friendly so she didnt have much trouble there, and shes curious enough that when I leave the door open for her, shell take walks around the apartment to inspect everything.

Shes been doing normal stress behaviors I’d expect, growling, staying in my room, hiding under the dresser, etc. She used the litterbox fine first day, and I’ve seen her eat and drink, but moreso in small amounts.

The biggest issues are that she’s woken me up every night at 4am meowing over and over, and when I’ve gotten up to see whats wrong she stops, but then starts again the second I go back to sleep. I’m typing this after one of those moments, and now that im awake shes laying on the bed and sleeping fine.

The other is that she’s taking all day to eat her wet food, which I use to give her two daily doses of her meds which are life saving for her. I’m really worried about keeping her meds consistent, usually she goes CRAZY for wet food but since the move shes been really cautious, peering around corners after she sniffs it, and a lot of time ultimately leaving the food and going back to bed. It seems like she’s eating it all mainly after midnight, my guess is because thats when the apartment is completely quiet.

I havent called a vet yet because theres so many in the area I need to figure out which one I’m transferring her to, but would this be something worth calling a vet about? Or should I just keep trying to leave her food out for her? She finally ate most of hers from yesterday now that its 5am, but I need her to have two doses of meds a day and I have no other way she’ll take the meds.

With the meowing as well, does anyone know ways I can calm her down easy? I feel terrible that she gets so upset at night, and I also havent been able to sleep in 5 days because of it. I’m also having trouble figuring out whats the exact thing triggering her, is she lonely because I’m sleeping? Does she miss my abusers cat? (They werent bonded, but they did at least groom e/o pretty often).

Thanks for reading and please lmk if you have any advice.

how do I cope with the loss of a pet

I recently got a pet gecko for my birthday, and only around a week and a half later, while cleaning out its cage, one of the decorations fell on its side and he died shortly after, although i didnt get time to even get a connection with him, I still feel alot of grief and guilt over what happened, we we're able to get a new one but i still feel extremely guilty and just sad, i know im going to be much more careful, with the decorations, with this new one but i still have that feel of "what if i accidentally do it again", how can I cope with these feelings?

Jealous dog. Is there anything I can do?

So my dog has been the center of my world for a long time. A few months ago I started seeing a woman seriously for the first time in a while. Lately she's been staying over at my place quite a bit. Bodie is a 10 year old 90 lb mixed breed with a surprising amount of energy and he really gets along great with her. But every time we touch or make contact or cuddle he'll bark or try to get attention anyway he can. He doesn't show any signs of aggression, but I don't want to unknowingly encourage or promote the behavior.

My reaction has been mostly to ignore him and he usually will calm down after about a half hour or so, but sometimes I don't want to go through that and will put him in another room. Am I doing the right thing? Is there anything else I can do to help him not be so needy? Should I be worried that he'll get aggressive?

If anyone has any experience or knowledge I would really appreciate any input. I just really want this to get better not worse over time.

Help! Resident cat acting depressed after bringing girl kitten home. Need ADVICE :(

So...we have had our cat, for almost two years now. He is a year and a half, and we have been thinking for the last year that he has been displaying signs of loneliness/boredom : tearing up the carpet, being extra vocal, following us around, biting, eating excessively, etc.

My fiancé and I are gone during the day, and we have always felt that it would be good for him to have a companion. So we finally made the spontaneous decision and brought home a girl kitten on Saturday. I feel incredibly stupid, but I feel the introductory process was a bit rushed. My fiancé really wanted them to meet, so after her being home for the entire day, at night time they were able to see each other face to face after both smelling each others scents through the door, on our hands, etc.

My resident cat is having an extremely hard time adjusting. He seems like he just wanted to play with her, smell her...but she is hissing at him /batting and running from him. He isn't violent whatsoever but we can tell he's feeling extremely depressed that she is being this way. All of a sudden our "young" boy full of happiness, playfulness and purring/love/head butts is being silent, reserved, not purring, and acting simply depressed. He's barely eaten, now that he is aware of her presence even when we separate them, and she's in the bathroom and he's in the main part of the living room, he's just not being himself.

I have been having a really hard time with this myself. I feel like we made a huge mistake and judged the situation entirely wrong. What if he actually prefers being an only child? We have been making it a point to give him extra love and attention but he's still acting like he is being replaced and its breaking my heart.

I'm praying that its not because the situation was 'rushed' and that this has now caused irreversible damage. I would be so thankful to hear if anyone else has gone through this...and if this is just a normal part of the adjustment period. I know some cats are fine being alone, but I really felt like I was reading his cues right and that he has been lonely. I feel like it shows in his encounters with the kitten, he wanted to just sniff her and play, and he is SO gentle around her, but she won't have any of it and hisses and he then turns his head/stares at a wall/doesn't act himself...doesn't accept love from myself or fiancé and won't eat.

I feel so devastated. I just want to know that this is normal and that a companion will do him good in the long run. If they're not going to be best friends so be it, I just thought he needed a friend to keep him company when we are gone for long periods of time. Now, I just miss the old him and worry that if we keep her he will completely loose himself and never be the same again. It has been 48 hours as of this point.

Also, she is unspayed but he is neutered. Our breeder said it shouldn't matter on her personality that she is unspayed around him, but it has us wondering if this is contributing to her protectiveness/cattiness. She will be spayed in a month, she was just too small when we got her to be spayed and is still not quite at the recommended threshold weight to be spayed.

Please please help with any insight, I am feeling so heartbroken :(
