I have been reading about how grain free food is potentially harmful to dogs and trying to figure out what to do.
I adopted my dog six years ago. We think she's a Lhasa mix (~14 lb, resembled a yorkie as a pup). When I first got her, vomiting, diarrhea, and a lack of interest in food as well as significant hair loss were major problems. She also had recurring UTIs. Vet visits were constant.
Working with the vet and a lot of testing, pup cannot tolerate any poultry. By carefully removing all poultry from her diet, she went from around 5lb to 14lb (ish) and enjoys a full fluffy coat of white, gray, and champagne hair, playing with other pups, adoring her meals and (appropriate) treats, as well as lap time and snuggles. Once poultry was removed, house training was so much easier and she sleeps through the night.
She enjoys beef, pork, white fish and salmon, and lamb as proteins and none of them bother her. However, for any food to exclusively have these and no poultry - no chicken or turkey or duck, no liver or extract, etc - they all end up also being grain free. I never purposefully went grain free, it was a side effect of her intolerance.
Can anyone help?
