My cat is suddenly extremely reclusive, grooming herself aggressively, and breathing rapidly. I need help determining whether there is a non-medical explanation for this before I take her to an emergency vet hospital

My cat is usually very social and vocal. Today, when I came home, she darted out of my room into the living room (which is uncharacteristic but not concerning). After she ran out into the living room I couldn’t find her at all. I put out some of her favorite food and she came out from where she was hiding in the closet. Usually when she eats she purrs the entire time. This time she ate like she was desperate. Immediately after she finished eating she slunk back into her closet hiding place with her tail super low and won’t come out. She’s been grooming herself really aggressively and shes breathing pretty rapidly. She lets me pet her and will sniff my fingers but nothing else. I havent seen her like this since we first brought her home from the shelter as a kitten, but even when she was at her most skittish she would always come out for cuddles once I started petting her.

A few things that might be causing this:

  1. The most concerning. My apartment has been having a roach problem and I know my roommates sprayed the living room a few days ago. Could it be that she ingested some after she darted out? She was in the living room for less than 3 minutes because thats when I started looking for her. She also is still eating and no sign of vomiting or diarrhea.

  2. I have an unfinished puzzle on my desk. Could it be that she tried to eat one of the pieces and its lodged in her windpipe? I read that could be a cause of rapid breathing.

  3. Our roommate got a new kitten a few months ago. I know theyre not supposed to play before the kitten gets her shots but the kitten got out one day and ran into my room and they started playing. Her eyes are a little watery. Could it be that she caught something from the kitten and its only now exhibiting symptoms? She also keeps twitching her ears. Im wondering if she has ear mites but she wont let me go anywhere near her ears.

  4. Shes about to turn a year old, so I had to change her food from kitten food to adult food and also decrease the portions. I don’t think its an issue with switching the type of food because she is picky and if she doesnt like something she wont eat it. And she has no problem eating this. Is it a problem with the portion size? Did i decrease her portion size too suddenly and is she just hungry? Its been almost a week since I started this new diet though. Would it take this long for her to react to it?

I really want some input on whether it could just be that shes hungry or if this sounds like normal cat behavior and exaggerating symptoms because I’m a helicopter mom. My partner also says that her behavior is concerning though, and shes less paranoid and protective than me.

I absolutely will take her to the vet if this behavior lasts but I want to rule out non medical reasons for the behavior before I do because all vets are closed right now except the 24 hr emergency animal hospitals, which are significantly more expensive.

Please help :(
