My family and boyfriend live about an hour and a half from where I go to school, and I like to be with them any time I can. My last cat was left home alone on weekends and always meowed at me for a solid 30 minutes when I returned. He sadly disappeared, and eventually I got a kitten (now over six months old). At first I left him home too, but after my parents urged me to bring him to their house, I did some research and felt I shouldn't leave him alone more than six hours. I have since been bringing him. First attempts, in carrier, he cried the whole way. Found that he's happier snuggling me, but as he gets more comfortable, he's trying to explore the dangerous region (containing break and gas pedals), and I think we both get upset when I end up shoving him in the opposite direction. He did seem to really enjoy my parents' house (6.6 times the size of my apartment), but to complicate matters, they just got a new puppy, and say my cat now hides in my room when I'm not around.
Asking for help weighing the stress of each option.
I feel like being in the car is panicky, which may be more harmful to his health? (based on the understanding that their lifespan is shorter due to faster metabolism: HR, etc.) Or perhaps he could become depressed or develop attachment issues if left alone? Any advice appreciated, particularly personal experience/ scientific research. Thank you!
