Gerbils won't chew on chewtoys

Gerbils' teeth (much like other rodents) constantly grow, and therefore they constantly feel the need to chew. My own gerbils, Pancake & Waffle, absolutely love timothy hay twists and bare paper towel roll tubes. However, I feel like those materials are a bit soft since they go through them so quickly. I got them harder toys to chew on that would hopefully last much longer and be more efficient on roughing down their teeth, but Pancake & Waffle wouldn't chew them. They're brown, organic gerbil chew toys that are pretty tough, but all the gerbils did was sniff them, take a slight nibble, then turn their noses away. They did the same thing with thin wooden sticks too! Any advice on how to encourage them to chew on the harder toys, or maybe any suggestions on different toys to get them?
