We have quite a few cats, one outdoor. We take care of all of them and our outdoor cat has the basement for shelter/heat/cool if we're not home, though most of the time we just let him into the house. The closest thing to house trained this cat is he will scratch at the door when he needs out to use the restroom, or to roam in general.
Our neighbors have been keeping him in for days on end, the first time I got him I explained he's an outdoor cat and needs out or he will just hold in his need to use the restroom (in fact I told them not to take him inside at all), and after walking with him a bit outside it was pretty evident he really had to go. They must be feeding him some pretty good food though because he went back over there, we're on day 3 again and I anticipate their house will not be smelling the greatest when I go back over (They own no animals and thus no litter box if he even chose to use it). He will also tear up the house if he wants outside and is not let out.
Now they are an older couple so I don't want to call the police on them (it is a felony here to take a persons cat without permission), and the cat returned over there so he must not mind it that much, if he really needs to go he will. My real question is will they ruin their house over this or finally let him outside. The cat himself will likely not be hurt much if at all by this but the neighbors will. Also friends, don't risk a felony by taking someones outdoor cat, he's likely outdoor for a very good reason, there's so many at the humane society that need a home who would probably make much better indoor cats.
