My kitten is about 6 months old, 7 months when I go on exchange to Copenhagen next month. Of course we are quite bonded to each other, sleeping together every night, playing, what you would expect. I have two options once I leave on exchange: taking her, still being uncertain about housing and knowing that she probably will not have much outdoor access (right now she’s outdoor / indoor in a quiet suburban neighbourhood, she’s spayed and has all her shots), or leave her with my mother for about 8 months (she’s known her since she was little but has never lived with her). I’m really torn - i think it would be incredibly stressful for her to travel a 13 hour flight, live in potentially a hostel for a little bit, and then an apartment without outdoor access when she’s used to being outside. At the same time, I think it’s cruel in some ways to take her away from me and I fear that she’ll be confused and sad. Plus i intend on taking her back from my mother once i’m back, which could be stressful on the other end. Also, i will be studying and probably traveling some / going out when i’m on exchange. My kitten is used to this lifestyle (don’t get me wrong - i still spend lots of time with her, but i am away some hours during the day). Contrastingly, my mother would spend more time with her. I just don’t know how reliant cats are in terms of bonding with their owner? A third potential option would be to leave her with my mother for a few months and then have my friend bring her over when he visits me later on and I have secured housing, hopefully with outdoor access.
I just don’t have much experience with cats and I want what’s best for her, regardless of whether it’s hard for me or not. Thoughts?
