Some help with an older dog potty training.

So I adopted a 5 year old yorkie yesterday. It may be older but there is no gray hairs. It doesn't use the bathroom outside or use a pee pad. It just pees in random spots in the kitchen. Well it used the pee pad twice in 24 hours and peed like 6 times around the kitchen in other spots..he will pee in the kitchen after going outside. The last owner (who I now think lies) said he was house broken. I work during the day that's why I got an older dog and not a puppy. I know this will take awhile for him to get adjusted and he seems nervous. Does anyone have any tips for me to try and get him used to pee pad? I'm gone like 9 hours a day 4 days a week. I am sure he can't hold it that long. I was really fooled with this it looks like. I'm trying to make it comfortable for the little guy and I don't want to scare him anymore then he already is. He will see my vet in a few days. Has anyone gone through something like this? I'm so anxious because of it.
