My dog has PTSD...

Ok, I don’t really know how to put this... When I was younger we used to go to my uncles place a lot, he was involved with some pretty messed up people but he was at his mates car dealership place where my dog (Lucy, F, Unsure of age but at least something over 55 or maybe even 60 idk dog years but mum said something) was trembling under a car, my uncle got her out and starting holding her as she was quivering in fear, to the point where she would literally pee herself... my uncles friend said that they found her in a newspaper advertisement and they took her, that’s when they found out she had been getting abused, she would never go near men and if a man came up to her she would run away and literally pee herself on the spot, she did that once on our new couch... but my uncle said that he will take her, long story short my mum went over to his house and Lucy came straight up to her and sat on her lap (Lucy is a boxer/staffy or something-I’m no dog expert so correct me if I’m wrong and don’t be too harsh lol) my uncle and my cousins were surprised af as if that were the first time she had ever gone up to a human like that, so long story short we took her to our house, she was fine getting into the car but getting out was a nightmare, she wouldn’t budge until she saw the cat and they instantly clicked... we have had people come over and she is getting better with people, but there is something that happened this morning that really shocked me (this is Atleast 3 or 4 years later)... I woke up to Lucy sleeping but basically shaking in fear, acting as if she was getting hurt with the sound that dogs give whenever they get injured... I quickly woke her up and she quickly got up, her breathing was really messed up, like as if her voice went really deep and she came up and lay on my arm with her back basically against my chest, she was still breathing harshly too and also groaning... I’m really scared tbh... This has never happened like this...

Vacation... Need advice

My family and I are going on a vacation fron the 2 to the 8th. I am able to feed my hamsters on the 2nd and the 8th, but not in between. Originally my friend was supposed to watch them, but she gad to get surgery and won't be able to.

What can I do in between those times? One is okay and I would trust my grandparents to take care of, but my other isn't yet and my grandparents have a tendency not to listen to instructions. My dad doesn't want anyone to be walking around the house while we are gone (we just moved here).

Any suggestions on what to do?

Safest way to pay for pets

Hey everyone. I want to buy some sugar gliders and have them shipped to me thru air. This is not thru an official website but from an ad I found. The seller seems very trustworthy but is asking me to pay in the form of an amazon gift card. I find this kinda sketchy and I was wondering if there is a safe way for both of us to get what we want. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Coffee table

So I'm going to make my own coffee table. I was inspired by the aquarium coffee tables I see online. And I was going to do a 20-ish gallon aquarium on one side and some other kind of pet on the other side. Ideally the other pet would need very similar living conditions. A 20-ish gallon tank for them is about all I could have room for and I imagine the humidity and water temperature right next to it are going to make things problematic for some animals. Can anyone think of a small pet that could fit my needs (20 gallon enclosure, humidity friendly, 75-80°F), or should I just go with a big aquarium? My other thought was a lot of plants. I am making the coffee table so I am going to put an access door to feed them, change out light bulbs, general maintenance shouldn't be painful, so not too much of a factor. Any insight is appreciated 😀

Is my cat ok to be alone for 40 hours?

I’ll be gone for 40 hours on a weekend trip, someone told me to make sure my cat has enough food and water and a clean litter. Will he be ok or should I find someone to go check on him? I’ve never had a pet before him and I’m nervous but my friend (who also has a cat) said he should be fine.

A big German Shepard bit my little chihuahua mix.

I know it is not any of the dogs fault and won’t talk about how it happened.

I am concerned for my little baby, he was badly bitten in the jaw and was bleeding a lot, he stopped bleeding by the time we got to the vet, just a drops of blood coming from his mouth. I think it got his tongue I’m not sure. They say he couldn’t close his jaw. My Ace is going to be ok right?

Baby budgies are sick - Advise for all new bird owners

Hi,

I got two baby budgies last week, they were 5 weeks old according to the breeder ( I think they are younger) I took them home and they weren't very active but I just thought they were getting used to the new environment.

This morning they were breathing heavily, so I took them to the vet. The vet said there's a 50% chance they will pass away. I still decided to leave them at the vet hospital. I have previously lost a budgie before. I don't want to go through this again.

If you are a new pet owner or are considering getting a new pet. Take them to the vet as soon as possible, if you can't afford a vet, then consider getting a pet... I should have done this from the start, taken them to vet on the same day.

I have paid $800 AUD to leave them at the vet with a 50% chance of survival...

How do I get an extremely shy dog to come up to me alone?

I’m dog-sitting for my parents (they’re going on vacation) for a few days. They got a new dog a few months ago and I only see here every now and then. Any tips for her to warm up to me so she’s not so shy the next few days?

She will take a treat when I place it on the floor and walk pretty far away. She will also eat and drink when I am far away. She will also go out back to do her business. As long as she can do these things, I’m totally fine. But I really want her to trust me.

She was abused by previous owners, so this is most likely the main reason for her being so scared/shy of new people. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Dog Griefing after a dead relative

My grandma died a week ago. 3 days ago we put her into the ground. Since that time my golden retriever, which spend the last 3 months with her and me started wanting outside to poo very very frequent. Tommorow i will probably go to the vet but i am scared. Is this kind of normal? Can it be just his way of griefing? Staying with him i am sure he did not eat something bad that could cause some stomach problems and diarrea(last 2 trips outside resukted in this)

Newborn kitten keeps meowing

I think she's about 1 week old, I already tried feeding her and making her pee/poo, nothing. I filled a hot water bottle so she can keep warm too. I don't know what reasons there could be for her to keep meowing, is she possibly sick? Any advice would be appreciated :( She's been meowing for about 20 minutes already

Her stomach is also quite full and firm, I'm worried I may have overfed her

8 month old puppy still mouthing

My 8 month old puppy is a bit cheeky but fairly well behaved (still in the process of training her). She knows all her basic commands (up, down, lay, sit, stay, wait, come etc) and when we are playing games such as fetch or tug of war she waits for my command to begin. The only problem I have with her is that she still mouths and bites! It has gotten a bit better but when she’s really excited it’s sometimes hard to stop her from jumping up and trying to grab my hands (she went from biting/mouthing any body part she could since she was 2 months old to now predominantly just mouthing/biting hands). I’ve tried everything to stop this behaviour from ignoring her to yelping like I’m in pain (which excites her more) and redirecting her biting with toys. From all the sources I’ve seen, puppies should grow out the habit by 6-7 months but now she’s 8 months old.

Are there any other techniques I could try before we get her pro training lessons? ( still figuring out how to fit our schedule with our local vets training lessons).

My 2 kittens don't get along, help.

Yesterday I picked up 2 little kittens, I've named them Mocha and Latte. Mocha is a little girl and Latte is an even tinier boy. They are both a little bit scared of me, which is to be expected with new cats. But here's the thing, they don't get along either. Latte is super sweet, he likes exploring and loves playing with his new sister. He will paw at her and bite her tail. But Mocha is having none of it. She gives Latte countless warnings and Latte will just ignore them. This causes Mocha to lash out at him, as far as even chasing him through the room. Whenever I put them in seperate rooms they will both start meowing non-stop, but I can't put them together because they will immediately start fighting again. How should I go about this?

Left is Latte, right is Mocha

Something is biting my 5-6 week old kitten?

I’ve searched all over her for fleas and haven’t found anything even using a flea comb. She’s tiny and has a lot of white on her so I really don’t think it’s fleas, but if it’s not fleas what is it?! And how do I treat it with her being so little? It’s definitely something biting her, you can tell by how she will spaz out and then bite/scratch the area. We got her from a shelter last week and they said she was 5 weeks old so she’s about 6 weeks now. I don’t mind taking her to the vet but I just had her there two days ago and told them she was itchy and they checked her and said she looked fine and was too small for flea meds anyways. The tech suggested buying flea spray and spraying it on a towel and wrapping the kitten in it with her head out for awhile but the vet didn’t think she had fleas. Could it be mites? A skin condition? Tonight is different for some reason and instead of seeing her bite/itch a spot once or twice a day it’s been constant itching and biting herself she is really miserable. She can’t go to sleep because of it. It’s 3am and I’m tempted to stick her in a sink full of water to see if I could drown whatever is on her. I have two other cats that don’t seem to have any issues but we’ve kept them pretty separate.

I'm afraid I could have saved her...

My wife and I got a kitten a week ago from the local shelter. She was 4 weeks old and abandoned by her mother. When we first got her she was skinny, had a few scabs... But otherwise was pretty normal. She loved climbing on us and sleeping on our shoulders.

As days went on she got slower and slower. We focused on giving her more formula and wet food but she was still getting skinnier.

Finally, yesterday, she wouldn't even leave her heating pad except to drink a few sips and go to the bathroom... We went to the vet this morning at 9am and they said she was very dehydrated. They gave her a water shot and dewormer. She perked up after the water shot and it was looking good. We took her home to rest. At about noon I checked on her and she was completely lifeless. She was on her back and opening her mouth. Her head just dangled. She felt completely dead but still warm and breathing.

I didn't know what to do and my wife was freaking out. We took her to the shelter and they put her down...

After crying for hours and feeling terribly... We researched and found many cases like ours (fading kitten syndrome) where the owners simply gave the kitten sugar water and they perked back up and lived on.... I feel terrible. We didn't know that and no one told us that. I feel like we could have saved her. I feel so guilty.

I'm sorry, Daisy... I didn't know, girl.

Pyometra will kill your female dog

Hello, I havent posted much on reddit. Been lurking for almost 8 years and i havent posted anything until this year. Today id like you to know about my dog KC. She died a week ago, she was about 6-7 years old.

KC was an unspayed rottweiler, german shephard, bull mastiff mix. A large but gentle giant. She often would give me heavy paws when i cried, licked my face when i was mad, and guarded us till we slept.

She died from an infection in the uterus called pyometra. It happens to female dogs who havent had their uterus removed (spaying) and as she goes through cycles without having a baby, her uterus will become scarred and harder to push out the layers that later on shed (menstruation). We didnt think she was going to die from her period. Dogs and humans are different, but seldom do you hear of women dying from it. I now know that humans can get it too, though, very rarely.

There are 3 ways they can get it: 1) shes not fixed. uterus drains when infection progresses. This is called open pyometra. Usually there is white pus coming out, very easy to catch, but still fatal if not treated in animal emergency.

2) stump pyometra Shes fixed, but the left over uterus develops and infection. Again, can be fatal. Im not sure if it shows obvious signs but its good to mention.

3) closed pyometra. My dog died from this. She was having her usual periods- messy and hard to manage. I noticed she was 1 week extended (1 month and 1-2 weeks) for her menstruation.

Closed pyometra is when there is pus collecting in the uterus, but fails to drain. It becomes so large and fragile, that it tears and causes sepsis. Sepsis has a few signs. Excessive drinking due to kidney failure, not eating, vocalization, and a plump belly ( you can see an enlarged uterus if you look carefully).

Sepsis can kill within 12-48 hours.

Because we had no money for emergency and surgery, she was as good as dead even if we found out earlier.

She started dying in her sleep, the last thing i remember her doing was barking at 6am. She died around 8am. She waited for my dad to wake up before she gave her last breathe. I never got to see her before she died.

I made a post about this because i want everyone to not overlook this possibility and to pay attention to your loved ones (being dog or human). Ive always known that life was fragile, but i was sure she was going to live another 4 years with us. I was wrong.

I accept any kind of criticism for any comments made on what im going to say next, so everyone can avoid the mistakes that ive made.

Kc was a big dog, she ate a lot, and we frequently caved in to her begging. She was 220 lbs when she died, she was fat. She didnt die from a heart attack, but im mentioning this because i didnt notice her enlarged uterus because it looked like her usual pudgeyness.

She always drank a lot of water no matter what. So even if the symptom was excessive water intake, it never struck me as odd.

She puked the night before, but only once. She was as happy and energetic and showed no signs of sickness.

As many other people, menstruation can be off putting, and tends to bring out the immaturity, especially in men. I regret this one the most. When she bled, i was very repulsed, especially when she was a dog. I noticed she was a week extended, but humans do that right? Yes, but wrong. Im an immature asshole who didnt take her seriously, and i ignored her at her most needed time. Pyometra usually happens at the end of her heat. I couldnt pay attention to her, all because of blood? I will take this to my grave. Ive thought of ending it just to say sorry to her for ignoring her pain.

Guys, this can actually happen to women. Its rare but i want you to know to not be immature like i was, be it human or dog.

Take these things seriously. You never know what might take your loved one, just from 1 week of overlooking things and things change quickly.

I regret what i did. And i hope i get to see my dog one more time in heaven before i go to hell.

Dog started choking and after trying to do a doggie Heimlich maneuver is now scared of me.

Tonight Olive starting choking on a treat I gave her and then started gagging/choking and didn’t seem to be breathing. I proceeded to hit her on the back a couple times and picked up her front half and tried to do a sort of Heimlich maneuver on her. It seemed to work and she stopped choking but she now seems to be scared/nervous around me. It probably didn’t help that I was quite panicked in the situation and that probably freaked her out too. We are best friends and she sleeps in my bed with me every night. How do I help her know that I was just trying to help her and make her not scared anymore? Also what is the correct procedure for helping a choking dog?

My Pets and Thunderstorms (a quick probably pointless story I just want to share)

I just want to share this... and none of my pets are afraid of thunder. So I have a thunderstorm nearby with a LOT of lightning, and I tend to worry a bit. My cat (Pixie, a bengal) is an outdoor cat, so I was in a panic trying to get her back inside (i will not be discussing indoor/outdoor cat stuff with anyone!!) . Fortunately, when I call for her she comes almost immediately. I pick her up and bring her inside. That’s one less thing to worry about. Pixie would probably be fine anyway, but it makes me feel better when she’s inside during weather like this. Then next thing I know my whole family is outside and my younger brother is recording on the street outside... in the lightning. I get nervous but there’s nothing I can do, so I went inside. Perfect time for my dog (Jasper, a cavachon) to want to play. Bouncing on my leg trying to get his favorite toy. It was definitely enough to take my mind off everyone being outside. Eventually, while I’m playing with jasper and everyone comes inside. I bet Jasper just wanted to play, but it definitely helped calm me down a bit. I don’t know what I would do without my pets. Tonight I guess is another reminder of how much of an impact my pets have in my life

Kitten went from peeing in litter to my bed. Advice?

Hello all! So I just rescued a kitten from under a dumpster at my moms job. We have been taking care of it for four days now. The first two days, he was great at going pee in the litter box. Went all the time, even as far as when he was sleeping on my bed, he would get up to go pee in the litter box and then climb back in bed. But the past two days, he has been peeing on mine and my brothers bed. Today he has peed on it 3 times. I hate to keep him in the bathroom with the litter box and not let him out, but I just can’t have him peeing on my bed whenever he feels like it. I just need some advice for ways to get him to start using his litter box again.

Edit : he is 7-8 weeks old the vet said. we took him to the vet yesterday to get his shots and dewormed. He did test positive for feline leukemia

Dog shedding advice

One of my two dogs sheds alot (full grown siberian husky) to the point where the extention tube of my vaccuum had about a 7-8in tube of pure hair in it. She is super affectionate (which I love so much, she is a big baby) but it means her pure white fur is going on all my black/dark clothes. A pet smart near me does "deshedding", but with their past and just thinking what that would actually mean (just a deep brush? Some bs thing to keep her double coat from growing naturally? I don't know) but if anyone has tips on how to deal with double coat babies it would be appreciated

Grin Free Food

I have been reading about how grain free food is potentially harmful to dogs and trying to figure out what to do.

I adopted my dog six years ago. We think she's a Lhasa mix (~14 lb, resembled a yorkie as a pup). When I first got her, vomiting, diarrhea, and a lack of interest in food as well as significant hair loss were major problems. She also had recurring UTIs. Vet visits were constant.

Working with the vet and a lot of testing, pup cannot tolerate any poultry. By carefully removing all poultry from her diet, she went from around 5lb to 14lb (ish) and enjoys a full fluffy coat of white, gray, and champagne hair, playing with other pups, adoring her meals and (appropriate) treats, as well as lap time and snuggles. Once poultry was removed, house training was so much easier and she sleeps through the night.

She enjoys beef, pork, white fish and salmon, and lamb as proteins and none of them bother her. However, for any food to exclusively have these and no poultry - no chicken or turkey or duck, no liver or extract, etc - they all end up also being grain free. I never purposefully went grain free, it was a side effect of her intolerance.

Can anyone help?

Help: Cat jumped high while playing and hit his head on a glass table hard. Does he need a vet ASAP? Likelihood of concussion?

Hi all,

My 8 month old kitten his his head very hard. His jump was maybe 4 feet high and he fell on a glass table that’s 3 feet high. It was at full speed. He didn’t meow or make noise but just sat down and started grooming himself. His eyes followed my fingers and he played normally after his wand toy immediately after. He also ate his treats normally and quickly. When he’s not playing though he’s laying down, eyes closed/sometimes squinted. Napping probably. He’s still very alert and the slightest noise wakes him up. He’s letting me pet his head so I don’t think it’s still hurting? No blood, discharge, etc.

I’ve read about cat concussions and I’m a little concerned. Should I take him to the emergency vet today? Can I wait to take him in the AM? Am I over reacting?

Thank you

Just got a kitten for my 8 month old cat. Should I be worried?

So my 8 month old cat is very sociable and friendly and I felt bad that I left him alone so much so I decided to get him a friend.

I kept them in separate rooms all day and the older cat was hissing but not growling and seemed more curious than anything so I thought I let them roam around freely.

Now the kitten doesnt seem scared but will be submissive if my older cat swats at him but so far that's been it. No growling or aggressive behavior. Just hissing and swatting at the kitten but it seems like he is just establishing boundries.

Should I separate them again or just let them do their thing?

Neighbor across the street leaves her dog to roam the streets from 7am-7pm every day

I’ve lived here for about a year and she is the only neighbor I haven’t met as she is always gone. She has a small (maybe 15-20lb) dog and for the last few weeks she has just let her roam the streets while she is gone. The first time I saw her out I was able to pick her up and put her back over the fence thinking a gate was open. I checked all the gates and they were closed. I just shrugged it off and went to work.

Well every day since then the poor dog hides under a car parked in the street waiting for the neighbor to get home and let her inside. The neighbor knows the dog is running free because I’ve seen her come home in the evenings and the dog runs up to her and follows her into the house. It’s a really playful dog and anytime I let my dogs out she runs over to see them.

I’m not bothered with what the dog is doing while she is gone but I’m worried about the dogs health and safety. Our street isn’t that busy but enough cars come by that there is a good chance she is going to get hit one day. Not to mention it’s been extremely hot outside and the dog has no food or water. I put out a water bowl and food dish by my garage before I leave for work so it at least has something.

I really don’t know what to do. I’m a bit hesitant to confront her as I’ve never really met her and don’t want to come off hateful asking her what the hell she is thinking. I don’t want the dog to get picked up and put in a shelter and end up being put down. I really don’t know what to do that would be in the best interest for the dog? Anyone have any ideas???

Overgrooming cat

Hi! My cat has been overgrooming for about a year. We have done blood work, xrays, a skin scrapping test, parasite treatments, two food trials; tried steroids, NSAIDs, amitriptyline, gabapentin and atopica. Only the steroids seemed to have any impact but she starts overgrooming right after she goes off them and she can’t be on them long term. My vet consulted a dermatologist and she has no other suggestions. My vet thinks it’s behavioural but I don’t see how that explains the steroids working. At this point, we can try more anxiety medication I guess but that’s all anyone’s got. Any other suggestions?

my parakeet won't trust me

i've had him from a neighbor. he's in our home for almost 2 years, but never really did anything with, since they said if he flies outside he's gonna smash into walls and die. actually, i had another, but he died recently. 1 upvote = 1 prayer... so i went to an animal store to see if i could buy 1. and then a worker who had a parakeet said we could familiarize with him (open the cage, talk with him, you know) before. so i opened the cage, tried different techniques but he's just way too scared. i put some budgie food on my hand and put my hand into the cage, but he just tries to get as far as possible. how do i fix this?

My sister started letting our adult dog use puppy pads, and now he goes on MY carpet! How do I make him stop?

He is an older dog who never goes inside the house except for some rare accidents that haven’t happened for a few years. But then my sister started letting him use puppy pads in her room, which is where she keeps him when no one is around to watch him. He started automatically going whenever someone would lock him up, so she’s basically un-housetrained him. I recently started feeling bad for him always being locked in her room, so I started letting him hang out with me all day but now, I’ll wake up to dog poop on my floor. He lets me know when he needs to pee outside, but the thing is, he seems to prefer pooping inside because he’ll still do it even if he’s had plenty of opportunities to go do it outside or even if he HAS already done it outside recently. I’ve never housetrained a dog, and I don’t know how to handle this situation where he already knows how to go outside but I need to make him stop preferring to use the house as his toilet. Any advice?

Someone's dog attacked mine while out on a walk and her pads were torn raw in the fight. She can't walk too well, what can I do?

Context: there's an abandoned house a block from where I live and it's gotten a new squatter. This one apparently fancies himself a Pit Bull breeder, but he only has a chain for one of them and the other was sitting in his yard untethered and relatively unattended while he bathed the one chained down.

I was walking my dog as normal (a 2 year old, 45 pound mutt) but I peeked out the corner and the unchained Pit broke off in a sprint and attacked my dog. He looked about 70lbs, but I was able to wrestle him off of my dog but not before her leash was severed and she ran all the way home.

The squatter apologized and gave me his leash to compensate me losing mine, but when I got home my dog ran in and left bloodprints the furniture. I examine my dog and she has a couple of scrapes on her leg and neck, but all 4 of her paws have a range of the pads torn or peeled back.

I can't afford a vet right now as I was helping my family with several other medical emergencies, and the squatter is otherwise a penniless homeless guy. I don't know what to do after treating my own dog's wounds myself, I just called 911 and they got me with Animal Control, but I still feel pretty boned here.

My dog doesn't eat enough throughout the day. How can I improve her eating habits?

So I've got a 6-year-old Maltese that's been very skinny lately. She's very docile and well-behaved, but is just really shy when it comes to eating. The only time she ever eats her food on her own is late at night when no one is looking. What can I do about this?

New cat nervous in new home, new owner nervous about cat's nervousness

Hello! I am hoping for some advice/reassurance in this situation, if you don't mind. I'm feeling totally lost and inexperienced with this.

Growing up, my family always had cats, and we always got them as kittens. I was used to them taking maybe a day or two to get used to the new house but I never thought much about the time it would take for a cat to get acclimated.

I haven't had a cat since becoming an adult, though. I've been wanting a cat for months, and only recently was I in a position to get one. I adopted a 2 year old adult cat from a local shelter who was extremely sweet and gentle when I met her, if a little bit shy. When we in the room she hid under the chair but still came out to get pets repeatedly. She nuzzles all over people's hands. I thought she seemed great.

We took her home and tried to set her up in the bathroom to start and she immediately escaped to the closet (she darted out the second we tried to open the door.) So we set her up in the closet instead with the litter box and food and water, etc. She stayed in the corner of the closet for the first 2 days, but she would come out for pets if we came to visit her. She did use the litterbox, eat, and drink normally even from the beginning.

She improved a lot in the first week but has hit a plateau. We've had her for almost 3 weeks now, and since then, she's slowly expanded to the rest of the house, going back and forth between hiding under the sofa and under the bed. When she hears our voices, or if we coax her out, she comes out and nuzzles all over us but if anything startles her, it's back under the furniture she goes. We got her a brand new cat tree in hopes that she'll feel safer being high up but she's barely touched it. Sometimes at night she's playful and will even jump on top of the bed and lay next to me for a little bit, but again, if I shift at all she races away.

I'm starting to worry that she's going to keep being like this, and that maybe we aren't a good fit for each other. My cats growing up were always very friendly and affectionate, which is why I was immediately drawn to her, but I've never experienced such a fearful cat before. Another concern I have is that the house itself may be scaring her. We have a very calm household and we've been extremely gentle with her, but we live right next to loud traffic and they often do construction outside the other window, so it may be a bad fit in that regard too. She seems very sensitive to any noise at all.

Please let me know if you have any advice for this situation, or if you've been through something similar. The shelter gives you 2 months to ensure it's a good fit, but I really want to give her as much time as I possibly can to become comfortable. Thank you in advance.

Safe to give cat canned chicken food left out overnight?

I was taking care of my neighbors cat, but accidentally left out her canned chicken food overnight. I believe the brand was blue buffalo canned chicken food or something similar. Apart from it seeming drier/darker at the edges, nothing really happened but I wanted to make sure nothing would happen if I still gave some to her.

Is a flea infestation considered animal abuse?

Recently a friends (we'll call them Kevin) cat had 4 kittens. I'm taking one in and Kevin was able to find someone wanting to take in another. This is Kevin's friend, a girl we'll call Robin. Yesterday we were talking about the mother and the babies, talking about vet visits, things like that. We're trying to find people who are interested in taking the other 2 babies. I then think of Kevin's other 2 friends that are a couple and I know one of them absolutely LOVES cats so I suggest them. Kevin then tells me they might already have to many pets (2 dogs, a snake and a fish tank) so I say oh that sucks.

However he then lets me know that the girl Robin who is taking one of the babies is their roommate and that there house is flea infested!!! Has been since last year! Apparently when Robin moved in with them she had a rabbit, the rabbit had fleas, fleas got onto the dogs and you know what fleas do, multiple and they just never did a thing about it! Kevin says he refuses to even step foot in their place because when he does he gets eaten up and it's absolutely disgusting in there! He explains their life style (expensive) and that's probably why they don't do anything health wise for the animals other than food and simple things. It's on the dogs, in the house, everywhere. I asked did she still have the rabbit and has she even taken that to the vet, did she actually take care of it or just liked looking at it? He said he didn't know but the rabbit had died... So basically for a year (or longer) they've had fleas just raising a community, building relationships and an economy in the home.

I told Kevin he couldn't be really considering giving this girl one of the kittens. Fleas are not something to brush off the animals could get sick/be miserable etc. I told him at least make them handle their flea infestation first but he kinda shrugged me off! I figured if I ever stepped foot in their place (which Im considering) and it's still just as bad as he says could I call animal control? Or is a flea infestation causing poor health not something they look into? Maybe I'm just overstepping (if I am ya'll can let me know too) but shit like that just makes my blood boil. TAKE CARE OF YOUR ANIMALS.

Vet bill that I cannot afford right now. Options?

My gf thinks that one of our dogs may have broken her leg and the way I’ve always heard is that majority of vets expect payment in full at time of service. I saw that this type of injury is upwards of $500+ and I can’t do that right now but I don’t want her to just sit here with a busted leg :/.

Any other options I don’t know about that could help?

Feeder insect recommendations needed

I am raising two tiny toadlets and need some advice. They’re getting to a size right now where flightless fruit flies are getting a little too small for them. I give been giving them pinhead crickets and flightless fruit flies as I haven’t seen any feeders that are a good size for this transitional period. The crickets are good but they’re very difficult for me to get. I have to order them online which i don’t mind but when the first order I placed arrived the package was a little damaged and a lot of them escaped in transit. The company sent me a replacement order and because it was so hot that day almost all of them were dead on arrival.

I’m running low on crickets and was hoping to get some recommendations for other feeder insects I can order along with my next cricket order. Meal worms are too large and I don’t have time to breed a colony of anything. Are there any feeders out there that are similar in size to pinheads, or slightly larger but without a hard exoskeleton? I’m avoiding night crawlers as I’ve heard horror stories of toads getting parasites from even the highest quality ones.

Pet acting high after sniffing plumeria

My cat is about as friendly as a cactus and hates pretty much everyone, so when I brought home some plumeria flowers to make leis, I was pretty surprised when she actually came over to me and started sniffing the flowers.

She really liked those flowers. She wasn't licking or eating them, but after a few minutes, she started getting twitchy. She'd run the length of the couch or jump on and off other furniture, which she does once in a blue moon but never when there are icky people around (she really, really hates everyone). If she'd been human, I'd have said she was high as a kite. As it is...she's high as a kite.

I Googled plumeria and cats. Turns out the flowers are toxic to cats. Who knew?

What kind of threat can bird mites pose to my cat? Any way I should specifically deal with it?

Alrighty, here’s some context. A few days ago I was taking cans out behind my apartment building for recycle and I noticed a birds nest nestled up in a gutter-like thing on the building, right by one of my bedroom windows. I didn’t think much of it at the time, thought it was pretty neat to see birds return to my residence really (I believe they’re mourning doves). They’ve been around my apparent building for years and never really caused any problems. At least until now I think.

Recently my family has noticed little bugs crawling around on our arms and seen them scurrying across our phone screens. Didn’t think much of it until their appearance became constant throughout the days. I got some irritations on my arm, and first thought they were probably dust mites. The bugs are absolutely tiny. Today, I expressed my concern to my parents and found out that my brother also had seen these tiny bugs on his stuff too. After a sort of sigh of relief (because I was finally getting confirmation that I wasn’t crazy and just seeing things), my brother mentioned that when he was cleaning out his room earlier, he noticed a bunch of tiny bugs crawling through his window sill - that happened to be right next to the bird nest. So of course he tried to get rid of them and cleaned them off. I put two and two together, and after seeing another Redditor ask about a similar looking bug get told they had most likely had bird mites, I assume we do too. It makes sense and their bites and irritations are similar to what we’re experiencing.

So bird mites. Most likely. Yikes. I’m trying to see if maybe we can get confirmation on these bugs from an exterminator or anyone, and hope we can get serious help removing them.

But I also have a cat that I love dearly. I always get anxious whenever he acts different or seems to be meowing more than usual, y’know that type of thing. Last time we took him to the vet, it was for a flea problem back in either 2016/2017. I hate that we haven’t been taking him more often to make sure every thing is alright, my family seems to prefer waiting out a lot of issues he might have rather than taking him to the vet - I believe their excuse is always about it costing too much money.

I’ve been doing a lot of anxious googling about what to do with these bugs. Yeah they annoy me but I’ll work through them. I’m just worried about how they might affect my cat. He’s around 6 years old and he’s a tad overweight. If it’s necessary I’ll take him to the vet immediately, no matter the cost. He seems to be meowing differently and seems to be trying to get my attention in a more needy manner.

I saw how these bugs have irritated and caused bites and bumps on my brother’s skin, I’m worried about what they might do to my cat. I haven’t seen any on him yet but these bugs that we’ve been seeing are so so small that I would have to really inspect his fur thoroughly - which I plan on doing in the morning.

If anyone has any recommendations or ideas on what I should do I would really appreciate it. I think there are products that I could buy in stores to help repel them from my cat. I just really don’t know if this could become a really big problem for him and I want to get other’s thoughts on this because my family is really indifferent about it. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Dietery help after bladder blockage

My two tear old male kitty, Rufus had a blockage in his bladder. We rushed him to the vet, they were able to express his bladder and sent us home with medications. Today we were able to bring the vet a urine sample and he says they found red and white blood cells along with Struvite crystals.

When he called us with those results he urged us to switch cat food brands, insisting upon Royal Canin Urinary SO. We currently feed both of our cats Taste of The Wild, mostly dry food but once a week we give them wet food. We call it “Treat day.”

My question is, should I trust this recommendation? I am so skeptical of doctors and vets and the relationship they have with sales people at these large corporations that incentivize the promotion of their product.

I want to buy our cats the best food and I want them to live long lives as part of our family. Is there a trustworthy resource to turn to? A highly recommended food brand by this community? Cooking them food myself or a raw diet?

Im not sure where to turn but am worried and don’t want to be lead astray. Anything helps.

Thank you

My dog was dog-napped and I just got her back after 2 months.

2 months ago my dog Lily went missing after she had followed my other dog Tracy out of the gate. ( I would like to clarify that I am not okay with them leaving but sometimes its inevitable, especially when we have visitors who don't close the gate well.) Tracy knows her way around the neighborhood, she'll take a small walk, visiting dogs and sniffing around, sticking to the sidewalk, and I don't have to worry of her coming back pregnant because she is spayed. Lily on the other hand is less than a year old and does not know her way around.

Processing img ultefp1st6731...

So one day, 2 months ago they got out and Tracy came back alone. I went out looking Lily for the first few days but never found her. I called the pound, but they also didn't find her. The first day she went missing I would look out on the street to check if she had been run over (unsettling thought). I didn't like giving myself false hope so after a week I was convinced that she was lost and had been run over, but everyone else thought she had been taken since she was so tiny.

After 2 months didn't think much of it, I obviously missed her and it would break my heart a little each time i thought about how she must have being alone. Than my dad comes home with a little surprise. OMG it was Lily!!!!

Apparently my dad found her wondering the streets following a man on his way back from the store. When he got back home he got took my sisters car and went back so he wouldn't look like a creep. He called Lily and she came running to him *sobbing*.

Lily seems to be well fed, dirty and filled with ticks and fleas ( she had a ridiculous amount). So basically someone did take her but we took her back and are contempt with our lives. We are now in second day of getting rid of fleas and ticks. I would also like to mention that Lily is now more savage, the streets really changed her.

Is this abuse ?

My childhood friend has no regard for animal life or owning pets in general and I’m sick of seeing animals come in and out as soon as they grow up. She most recently got a german shepherd puppy and a kitten at the same time about 3 months ago. Well last week she messages that she needs help and her puppy is dying. I see and tell her its parvo and she needs to take it to a vet if she wants it to live but surprise surprise she “cant afford it” and lets it die. Well today she posted that she got two new kittens a new hair color and cut ( for someone with no money) just to replace the puppy the other kitten that isn’t so small now. This isn’t the first time and wont be the last, I’m so sick of this pattern and feel horribly for the animals she buys and doesn’t care for. Shes had over 10 cats in the past 6 years and they’ve all somehow just “gone missing” and cats that have babies and if they’re male she just lets free when they’re old enough. I even own a cat from one of her old cats litters that was a male and she wanted to get rid of. Is there anything i could do but just completely block her at this point? Absolutely disgusting and selfish.

Cat throwing up dry food after slowing down

My cat has been on the same dry food for about two months now. However, as of the past week or so she started throwing it up. The vomit contains very clear pieces of kibble. I read that she might be eating too fast so I put a few golf balls in her bowl, but she continues to throw up. There hasn't been any changes in her environment that I can think of. I’m moving from one side of the world to the other and I want to bring my pets.

Like the title says, I really would like to bring my pets so I don’t have to abandon them in a shelter but I am really anxious that they will be really scared and freaked out while on the plane. I don’t really want to use a tranquilliser as I read it can affect their breathing which I don’t like the sound of.

How do I get them on a 20+ hour flight without them being spooked by all of the loud noises and how do I get it so they are properly hydrated and fed while on the flight? I love them so much and don’t want them to be mistreated but at the same time I don’t have enough money to get a professional animal transporter.

All help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Guilt over parent's euthanization of cat.

About 13 years ago, my sister caught and brought home a semi-feral kitten to my parents house. We think he was separated from his mom too early, because he just didn't know how to cat. He never once groomed himself (we had to give him baths), he was completely anti-social to anything except the dog. He also, from day 1, peed all over the house. So this is a chronically stressed, unhappy, and weird cat.

He was neutered before he hit sexual maturation, and was peeing, not spraying. Medically, he was fine up until the last few months when he started having symptoms much like one of my IBD cats (throwing up, losing weight). If it had ended up being a chronic condition, I'm not sure my parents would've treated it.

Over the years, many things were tried to reduce his stress and alter his behavior. I don't even know that I can list them all. Nothing worked. For years, they'd been threatening to get rid of him. They tried giving him away (no takers), and called 2 no-kill shelters who didn't even bother returning the messages or e-mails. The only option was animal control, where he would have been euthanized (senior cat, litterbox issues, and not even nice). At that prospect, I said it would be kinder to take him to the vet and have him euthanized, at least spare him the trauma of a shelter.

Well, I don't know what the last straw was, but it apparently happened this week. I received a text from my dad, without warning, that he had taken the cat to our vet to be euthanized.

Since then, I have been feeling guilty (over a cat I didn't even like) to the point of making myself physically ill (did you know you can stress yourself into acid reflux?). Realistically, I know taking him wasn't an option. I have 4 cats of my own (who also hate him), 2 of which are chronically ill, and 1 is really high strung and also pees inappropriately if he gets too stressed. I guarantee if I'd brought this cat home, I'd have 5 cats peeing all over my house, everyone would be miserable, the the IBD cats may be so stressed as to worsen their condition. Which is why I think my dad didn't tell me beforehand...because I'd have taken the cat, and he didn't want that.

I feel so guilty that it came to this, but I don't know what else I could've done.

Why Some Kitty Lovers Prefer a Disposable Litter Box

It is amazing how some long time cat owners out there who actually prefer using a disposable litter box over a permanent litter box. While most of us have used the same litter box for years, they contend that the disposable variety is a much better choice.

These cat lovers believe that disposable litter boxes have been among the greatest inventions out there for cats. They feel this way because this product addresses issues that are most important to kitty parents.

One of the biggest concerns is always litter box maintenance. No one likes that grind of dealing with a stinky cat litter box. But we are seeing that using a disposable litter box pretty much changes this task considerably and reduces the aggravation.

Disposable Litter Boxes are Convenient

The primary purpose of using disposable boxes is to save the time required to change your kitty’s litter box. We know that there are probably hundreds of ways to change or clean a cat litter box, but a disposable litter box has the most simple of all of those daily cleaning methods. This is because you only have to pick up that disposable box and throw it away. This is the biggest reason that cat owners use this type of litter box.

Generally speaking, it takes around ten minutes to clean and scoop a kitty litter box. There are some cat lovers that are using litter box liners, and yet there are others who use nothing at all and actual clean their cat litter box every time. The biggest advantage of using disposable litter boxes is that the time for cleanup is reduced to less than one minute. Just pick up that disposable box, throw it away and replace the box with another one.

Odor Control

One of the most annoying litter box problems that cat owners face is trying to control the ugly odors that come from kitty’s daily business. Although that are countless products out there that promise wonderful results in controlling that odor, many of them fall way short of actually doing that. This is simple because litter box odors are very hard to control. Disposable litter boxes are the easiest and most effective way to achieve odor control.

There are some disposable units that are made from biodegradable paper while some are constructed from plastic. The big advantage of using biodegradable boxes is that they tend to work along with litter to help in controlling odors. Biodegradable boxes are basically made from recycled papers which are very porous and can actually act as an effective air flow filter. Plastic boxes cannot do this. The overall objective of this air filter system is keeping the litter as dry as possible. Odor is best reduced when litter is kept dry.

Sanitation

The biggest health concern regarding litter box upkeep is toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis happens to be a bacterium that every cat carries naturally, but it is not harmful to them. It can be a hazard to humans as it is transmitted through cat feces. The immune systems of pregnant women and young children can be compromised by this bacterium making them vulnerable to other complications. Using a disposable litter box will considerably reduce this hazard as they restrict our contact with kitty feces.

Choosing a Suitable Disposal Litter Box

Believe it or not, there are several kinds of disposal boxes to choose from these days. Deciding which one to use can be overwhelming. Listed below are some things to keep in mind as they you decide which one to go with.

One good thing about choosing a litter box that is disposal, if you don’t like your first choice, you can try another one when you run out of litter boxes.

Material and construction: The biggest issue with material is making sure that it is 100% biodegradable. Some it will be disposable, it must be safe to throw away. The majority of these litter boxes is made out of either recycled material or cardboard.

Liner or No Liner: Will you be using a liner with your box or not? If you are opting for no liner, then you need to ensure that it’s durable and leak proof.

Open or Closed Box: Does your kitty like open or enclosed litter boxes? It is always be to use the type that you kitty loves. Obviously, this will make them feel more at home and ensure that they will actually use the box.

Lifespan: This is a very important choice for your home’s cleanliness. This disposable litter boxes typically have a lifespan of 1-4 weeks. If use a scoop, it will extend this time span.

Size: You should decide upfront if you require a large or smaller sized litter box. If you are choosing a litter box that is enclosed, ensure that your kitty has plenty of room to move around and dig the litter easily and comfortably.

Illusion : Freedom of Animals

Hello reddit, i'm new, and as i faced to some questions, they made to to ask this:

most people who have pets, believe that we have to respect animals, they are free, they have rights and sth like that. but the problem is why they do not consider that many of them GO AND BUY PETS, like a Slave. they BUY ANIMALS and say we are helping them and making respects. they buy their child and separate them from their family. this is a paradox. how these people can be animal supporter ?

Fleas..?

We've got a bad flea infestation, and we need recommendations.

I've been using a lemon, vineger, and water spray, I've also tried sprinkling everything (pets included) with salt, vaccuming daily after putting baking soda on the floor first

I'm thinking about getting an electronic flea comb but I'm not sure..? We have 8 cats and 2 dogs and cannot afford the super expensive treatments, so I've been trying to find cheap and safe alternatives

We do have advantage flea spray for cats, but I'm a little nervous to use it. Seeing as it's an insecticide and you have to leave it on for 30 mins, I'm afraid of the cats liking it off and getting sick

I am planning on calling my vet when they open to see if they have any recommendations Thanks in advance!!

2 yr old dog extra jumpy & mouthy when off leash in fenced yard

So our beagle/lab mix is a pretty doofy 2 year old. Scared of things like brushes and boxes. He has always been mouthy but we mostly broke the habit when we’re inside the house (he occasionally gets over excited and tries to nip) when we’re outside if I’m not playing with him with the flirt pole he is crazed. Literally gets this crazed look in his eye and will start jumping on you and biting your hand or arm (or ass if you turn your back to him). It doesn’t seem like an aggression thing, just this overdrive play mode but it makes it so we can’t go out back with him and certainly don’t let the kids out there with him.

My husband and I typical work opposite schedules do he is home alone a very short period of time so he’s often in and out tearing it up in the backyard.

Any thoughts on how best to break the habit without becoming a pin cushion from teeth and nails? The tricks we used inside (giving a toy, turning our backs, etc) don’t seem to work outside.

My indoor cat ran away and I'm stressing out!

Hello Reddit, this is my first time posting but it's really urgent. This morning my indoor cat slipped past me and went outside running (he is a 3 year old male and he is neutered). I went after him to see where he is heading and he hid behind a big garage door that is sadly locked (he got in around 8 am now it's 2pm). I put some just under the door to see if he we will get out but I didn't even hear a sound from there. Talked to the guy that can unlock the garage but he will be in town at about 5pm. Do you think that I should be concerned about his safety,I've been in panic mode since he went out and I'm still looking everywhere for him even tho I saw him get under the door and didn't see him get out.

Dealing with excessive barking

I recently adopted a 4 year old Yorkie Mix, she is really energetic and loves to be pet by anyone nearby.

But she goes nuts when it comes to certain people (or maybe certain conditions).

I mean like I can be walking her, and she will pull the leash towards one person, while other times she will immediately start barking and pulling at another. And when I say barking I mean she acts like an attack dog, people steer clear of her thinking she will bite them even though if I was to stop and they would reach out their hand she would want to be pet.

she tugs on her leash when barking to the point that she chokes herself (it's not a choker collar).

And whether she barked or not, once the person is out of sight, she will continue to look and want to go in that direction, with her ears and tail perked up. When she does this shes too preoccupied to go to the bathroom (even if she was about to) and wont go for a few minutes.

This makes walks really annoying as sometimes I have to go out really far away from people just to make her go to the bathroom before I leave for work.

In the apartment it's the same thing. If she hears a noise or sees someone through the window, she starts barking and doing things she knows she shouldn't be, like jumping on the coffee table.(If I say 'off' she will get off but continues to bark)

If I let someone in my apartment, regardless if it's the first time or not she will immediately want to be pet.

Pretty much unless I directly walk at a person with the intention to stop and talk with them, she goes crazy.

I bought one of those correction collars, which beeps and vibrates when she barks, but she doesn't even get fazed by it, shes so preoccupied barking.

Going for a ride is the same thing, she will excitedly run back and forth between the windows in the rear seat of the car, but as soon as we stop at a red light and she realizes there are people inside other cars, she begins to bark.

I tried wearing her down by playing with her to the point she didn't want to play anymore, but she got her second wind as soon as there was reason to bark.

She doesn't respond well to treats, she wont eat them out of my hand, only if I drop them into her bowl and walk away and sit down.

Lastly, to some extent she does believe I am the 'Alpha' even though she doesn't really listen to me when she's in barking mode. As an example once I get up and start walking towards her clearly upset she's barking, She will run up to my feet and lay down on her back with her tail between her legs.

I'm not sure how to deal with her barking at this point, any advice would be appreciated.

I think my cat gets horny when people pet her, it’s bizarre, I don’t know why she does this.

So, a year ago I found this stray and immediately took her in. When she got used to being in the house, she wanted to cuddle more. She’d nead the blankets, and I noticed she would look like she was humping them sometimes.

Now and then she gets really riled up and verbal, will meow at me a LOT. Follow me around a lot. This isn’t out of her personality to do this, but now and then she’ll do this shifty motion with her legs, and it looks like she’s jumping the air. Doesn’t matter if she’s on her tummy or on her side.

Tonight I was petting her. And she likes to grab my hands and pull them in to snuggle them to her face. She did this, but was doing her weird air humping. And her cat clit was popin out.

(I put a blanket on her so she could get cozy with that and chill out.)

As far as I know, she’s a female. It looks like she has a little cat vagina, unless she somehow has both. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cat push it’s clit out. Although I know cats who are in heat can.

She hasn’t had kittens while living with me. I’ve been meaning to take her to get microchiped, so I’ll have them double check her sex while there. I’m assuming she’s fixed, but then again, she was a stray, so who knows.

I know animals do weird things, as well. My childhood female dog used to hump chairs like she was a male. And she was fixed! It was hilarious.
