My wife and I got a kitten a week ago from the local shelter. She was 4 weeks old and abandoned by her mother. When we first got her she was skinny, had a few scabs... But otherwise was pretty normal. She loved climbing on us and sleeping on our shoulders.
As days went on she got slower and slower. We focused on giving her more formula and wet food but she was still getting skinnier.
Finally, yesterday, she wouldn't even leave her heating pad except to drink a few sips and go to the bathroom... We went to the vet this morning at 9am and they said she was very dehydrated. They gave her a water shot and dewormer. She perked up after the water shot and it was looking good. We took her home to rest. At about noon I checked on her and she was completely lifeless. She was on her back and opening her mouth. Her head just dangled. She felt completely dead but still warm and breathing.
I didn't know what to do and my wife was freaking out. We took her to the shelter and they put her down...
After crying for hours and feeling terribly... We researched and found many cases like ours (fading kitten syndrome) where the owners simply gave the kitten sugar water and they perked back up and lived on.... I feel terrible. We didn't know that and no one told us that. I feel like we could have saved her. I feel so guilty.
I'm sorry, Daisy... I didn't know, girl.
